i'm pretty fed up of outlook and how it screws with my contacts *i recently updated, and it removed all the titles from the names which is VERY annoying.* not to mention when i add contacts to my phone, it does NOT add them to outlook (maybe i'm just stupid but when i tried to set it to phone, it DELETED all my contacts sans a few) are there any alternative programs that are a bit easier and funner to use?

in one word: no.
Outlook is the easiest way AND the most perfected.
There are a few other possibilities to avoid outlook but in my opinion a pda without outlook is useless.
If you encountered problem it might be
-correct active sync version ?
corresponding to that : correct outlook version ?
-correct settings in active sync ?
If you fail to syncronize with ac....dont even try other solutions.
i'm using activesync 4.5 and the outlook version 2002, i copy contacts and settings from outlook just fine, with the exception of it screwing with the titles and names a bit, it's the other way around that's giving me a headache.
what do you recommend the optimal settings be so that if something is new on my computer, it transfers to my phone, and if something is new on my phone, it transfers to teh computer
(also anyway to stop it from seperating the names and removing titles?)

So i only have a german verison of ac i don't know the english name for the settings.
But you have to tell ac to sync in both ways and give the mobile thing the priority.
Then your problem should be solved.
did that, and once more it deleted all the contacts on my phone except for like 3-4 .... either this install is screwy or something is going wrong, or i'm just an idiot.

i used to, and i ended up with half a dozen duplicate contact and calendar entries for each one!!! i tried settings, etc, finally said to hell with it and set the phone to not sync with outlook. i feel your pain.

I had similar frustration. I eventually set up my 8125 to its own email address, and turned off the sync-ing of contacts. I have two separate contact lists now, but I'm not losing contacts from my phone all the time, either.
I do not have problems with duplicated events, but I publish my Outlook calendar to the phone, not the other way around.
I never schedule from my 8125. I always tell people to send it to my email, so I can control it from my PC. I only use the handheld on meeting-heavy days, and then I'm only checking email, and not accepting meetings.

Well, there is an alternative. I run linux so AS isn't even an option for me. I have been using FinchSync since I got the phone and it has worked great. I can even sync anywhere I have a network connection without being at home.
FinchSync uses an http connection to sync contacts with Mozilla's Thunderbird email and address client as well as your datebook with Mozilla's Sunbird calendar. So far it has worked great. One hint though, take the time to read the install and configuration instructions on their website!

I absolutely hate Activesync. I update my phone contacts and appointments via my Tilt, and then hook it up to my computer only to find that Activesync is deleting them on my phone and restoring the older files on my two PC's. I think, "oh, well I must have the sync settings set improperly," so I check them on my PC and my Tilt... it turns out that it only goes one way: from the PC to the mobile device. (Please correct me if I'm missing something.) You can just disable the sync settings, but then what's the point of having the program installed?
Personally, I have few complaints about Outlook.
I haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to be giving PDASync a try. They seem to advertise all of the features I'm looking for, although it does carry a hefty price tag of $50.

I'm still not 100% sold on PDASync. It seems to lack the ability to sync internet browser favorites/bookmarks and custom file folders. The quest continues.

i must use lapsync because i don't want all 1500 outlook contacts into my phone, so i filter them by category and only sync a certain category.
i dont sync bookmarks, but i know you can use AS to sync ONLY bookmarks. to sync custom files and folders, try mobsync - its free.
I Tried Laplink today, This needs ActiveSync to function properlyu (did not see my device attached). I am lucky I had trial software instead of paying $ 50
I've noticed that not has much been said on the Hero's exchange support in any of the reviews or user reports so I thought I'd let people know what it's like as, for me, this is a must have feature. I should say that I have not had an android phone before and so I have had no experience with Nitrodesk's exchange solution so I can't compare.
Well, I entered my exchange details during initial set-up and after my first attempt was unsuccessful (SSL needed and is off by default) it than worked. Asked me if I wanted to sync Mail, Calender and Contacts all of which I selected. After the rest of the setup had finished the phone told me I had a new e-mail arrive so I could tell it was working straight away.
Mail is fantastic. Downloads everything fine, has at least as many options as WM for choosing which messages to download. E-mails look great on the display and html e-mails show up fine.
Contacts are great, they all appear straight away in the people and the phone application. All the Facebook and Flikr integration works perfectly. Only niggle is that you can't group contacts by company which is something I used to do on WM.
Calender seems to work fine. Appointments showed up ok, including appointments sent by e-mail.
All in all, the exchange sync is way better than expected and in some ways better than WM. The integration seems very deep and integral to the OS rather than a bolt on feature.

All was fine for me, but as soon as I've allowed it to connect my contacts to FB contacts, sync fails for conacts with a 'client/server conversion error' message.
I'm using exchange 2003, mail and calendar are syncing fine, and I too would love tasks to be added, along with a fix for contacts and I'm a happy hero user

I just use exchange so can't comment on outlook sync. Facebook linking worked fine for me but I also have exchange 2007 so can only assume it's a problem there. Not sure if the exchange functionality is all implemented by HTC or whether they've used part of Nitrodesk's Touchdown but I saw on the Nitrodesk website that they don't support exchange 2003 yet.

The only app is HTC sync which is included along with the hero's manual on the sd card supplied with your phonbe, word of warning i just installed htc sync on my vista pc and it caused windows explorer to continuously crash until i uninstalled it, not impressed
Tried to install the app ealier, drivers failed and the app wont work (win 7 32 bit)
Going to try the long way round for now - sync outlook contacts to my google account and keep the google contacts synced to my phone - would I end up with a duplicate of everyone then though?

I, like you (not I like you!), have synced up this way. I too cannot get HTC sync to work. I am sure Orange have bundled the wrong version.
So, I export Outlook to a file, then import contact file to google cal, then sync gcalendar to hero. Job done.
No duplicates, google calendar seems intelligent enough to recognise the dups

Thinking about an Adriod as my next phone, since I think WM is really falling behind everyone else! I use it mostly for work so a couple of questions if you don't mind....
No tasks syncing so far?
How does the calander work, are the views easy to see, day and week stuff?
Meeting requests work?
Can you flag email messages? This is a must for me and I hate that WM 6.5 can't even do it!
How do you find the keyboard replying to emails?
Can you open Word, Excel, PDF files?

It will only sync my main inbox, not any of the subfolders I have, and will only sync via mobile network - fails on wifi ? ?
Then again can't get ANY web stuff on wifi ? ?
Word and excel fully creatable and editable with Docs to Go, and Open Office I think does let you read different docs though not sure which. Best PDF Reader seems to be RepliGo Reader which is good for books as well.
I'm only just getting to grips with Google Calendar but seems to have a great deal of flexibility for appts and stuff.
Widgets really just getting going, so I'm not sure of all those available...

I have reiceved my G2 touch and havn't been able to setup exchange sync over the air. It goes past first option i.e. to show me what i want to synch mail, contacts, calendar and than when I click on finish setup it fails with message unable to create account try later! Any idea what is going wrong. How can I fix it?

Anyone have any experience with exchange sync where the server requires you to set a password/pincode for the phone?
Heard some people saying that this was not supported by the Hero. A pity if true, as I need this to work in order to be able to use the Hero as a work phone (in other words, if I am to buy a Hero).
The out of the box exchange support is really very good. It just needs the ability to authenticate via password or client certificate.
I much prefer it to WM, but only because its completely finger friendly.
Yes you can flag emails, and they show up under the flagged emails tab at the bottom.
I really really hope the update within 10 days or September will affect this thing? Need to be able to sync more than one folder at the time.

works for me on vista 64 with orange branded HTC Touch. I believe there is an update on the HTC website, not sure if that enables win7 support
I certainly didn't notice explorer crashing after I installed it, chances are it's another explorer extension interfering (either a media codec that is failing at showing thumbnails, or a right-click extension or similar)
Hi all, my first question here. I've been all over the net to find a solution, and I did all the searching here aswell. No go.
I've been using ZYB to sync my contacts from an SE K600i, a Nokia 6230i and a Nokia 5500. It has been the most hasslefree solution to sync phones IMO.
Now I've tried it with my HTC TD2, and it synced perfectly with the little app provided...until I discovered...
Many numbers on the ZYB list are categorized as "Preferred, Voice" instead of "Mobile" or other useful category. The TD2 does not recognize this category and the number is not added to the contact. I have a gzillion contacts, and I'm looking for a way to correct this automatically.
I've thought of resyncing it with the Nokia, and then with my installed Nokia suite, doing some overall changes on the PC, and then transfering the list back, syncing with zyb, syncing again with TD2...but it's a long shot. I'm not even sure it can be done like that.
Any ideas to do this smoothly? Edit the zyb cab maybe?
As far as I know, Zyb and WM isn't a 100% compatible match...
Microsoft have made MyPhone for WM devices, and it works beautifully!
You could maybe sync your contacts via Outlook or something like that first, from the Nokia to your new TD2.
Then install MyPhone, and make a new sync there...
I think you need some 3rd party software to get ZYB to work as intended with WM, but then again - I am not sure about this since it's ages since I used ZYB myself...
Here's that I wanted to do:

2/ NOT using any online service (no Gmail, no google, no exchange)
3/ NOT using csv (I wanted to keep contact pictures...)
4/ Keeping a backup of my contact (but not in outlook, you'll understand why later)
5/ Synching my agenda with Outlook 2010.
In some other words, exactly what you can do with sense build + HTC Sync
My setup:
Win 7 x64
Outlook 2010 x32
DAMO 8.0.2 IF6
Lotus 8 Server (on a server... not on my laptop of course)
How to proceed on your comp:
a/ Install HTC Sync or Android SDK to get the driver for the phone's USB.
If you find it, you can also install the driver directly (open the HTCSync package and get the driver)
b/ Install my Phone Explorer (other equivalent soft exist but this one was good for me and free)
How to proceed on your phone (you need a google account empty/fresh)
I/ install android (or reset to factory setting or other...)
II/ with nothing in the phone (if you have somethingit may be send to google later) log to your google account
III/ go in parameter account&sync
IV/ untick all the sync for agenda and contact (you can leave Gmail exxcept if you want to sync your mails also)
V/ install MyPhoneExplorer on your phone (market ok, you have an account)
Voila!!!! connect to your computer, sync with MyPhoneExplorer.
Don't forget to configure the sync. I sync my contact with MPE only and my agenda with Outlook.
I do like this as I manage my agenda with outlook (accept company Lotus meetings) but just need to keep a backup of my personal contact. My company has an LDAP I can access from the phone (via iNotes Ulite).
I know it seems easy (limit stupid) but I assure you that I spent time to find it and I never find this info anywhere. Some know, I'm sure, but noone post it.
You can adapt this to your personal needs. It's a good way to keep company/professional info on your phone without sending it to the Americans (kidding but a company will never allow you to send confidential info at Google).
Hope this will help some of you. If my explanations are not clear just post your questions.
Mistake 1
If you didn't create the google account, it will not initialize the contact and agenda on the phone.
You can launch the sync (it will report no error), but you will not see anything on your phone.
Agenda: empty, if you relaunch the sync, it will resynch... with same result.
Contact: on the phone but anyway not visible in "Contact".
You will see the contact name in the "calls log" only, maybe in the sms (don't remember).

Just subscribed to this thread; as a HD2 owner who plans to get a newer device in the future (better if a phone-capable tablet - Tab 2?), but still wants to keep this phone as long as possible, I was looking at Android as a future day-by-day OS, since I'm still on a WM 6.5.5 custom rom.
Other than several objections to Android generally speaking, which I will not be discussing in this post anyway, there is one which, in my opinion, is the main, killer reason why I absolutely do not want to use Android: I don't want my own personal data to be managed in anyway by google.
I didn't know MyPhoneExplorer was able to actually sync via USB the PIM data with several desktop apps, most notably Thunderbird (both contacts and agenda), I only tested Android on SD for a very short matter of time and never delved into it very much, was just astonished at the massive volume of free games in the market
Anyway, MyPhoneExplorer needs wine to run under Ubuntu (will sync to thunderbird work in that case?), and anyway, to get 100% of your PIM data from WM to Android the most conservative way still seems to be to pass through a GMail account, while I would like my phone to have no relationship with google, like, at all, excluding the market, for which it is apparently necessary.
I must say that thanks to your guide I am one step closer to seeing android as a day by day OS, yet there are these few details missing:
1) fully syncing under linux without passing through google (apparently solved: http://www.fjsoft.at/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5835 )
2) moving the whole of your data from WM to Android (maybe syncing to outlook from WM in windows, then into android via myphoneexplorer... but I don't use outlook anyway and I wouldn't like to have to )
Regarding question 1... I can't help you cause I need Outlook to connect to Lotus Notes server... I have many apps I need for my job and I'm not sure yet to have it under Linux (at least I'm sure DAMO doesn't exist for Linux... so it's finish for me).
But I can help on point 2
It could be boring but it works well.
Go on the "sprite backup" website.
They offer for free:
Sprite migrate which give the ability to transfer ALL your PIM data from WM to Android.
BUT it doesn't work with AOSP (or at least I can't make it work).
So ou have first to load a Sense build or Android NOT AOSP.
When you have your data in Android, you can either use my post to offline sync with Outlook or MPE.
Then you load the AOSP build and sync again.
Alternative solution, when your data are in Android, use another app to backup every thing (an app compatible with AOPS), load your AOSP build and restore.
If you don't use an AOSP build... it's straight and easy.
If my answer is not clear, just ask for clarification.
PS: I think spritebackup is not compatible with AOSP because I use HyperDroidGBXv4.0 so I assume it will be the same will all AOSP. I never tested with other AOSP build, maybe it's specific to the one I have.
If you use a sense build, HTCSense manage the sync with Outlook in native. No need to apply my post, no need to create or log a google account. It's the easiest way... but it take much more space inyour NAND (400Mo vs 120Mo). Then you don't have a lot of free space on an European HD2 (the 512 one).

ATM I basically only sync WM6.5 only with my Windows 7 machine, yet after a mobile OS switch I'd very much like to have also my ubuntu laptop synced, and that's why I delved into the linux issue.
I reckon AOSP means Android Open Source Project, yet I'm not sure what distinguishes AOSP from NOT AOSP... could you please elaborate on that? Maybe all the releases which don't come from a certain carrier are AOSP? I suppose most if not all the android NANDs for HD2 are AOSP.
Yet, going sense just for the sake of importing data and then flashing a non-sense (pun not intended) ROM may go fine as well... even if officially sprite migrate if out of beta test, and not available, but I suppose I can easily find it "elsewhere"!! (even if it seems to migrate everything BUT calendar....)
You got me... I don't know so much Android yet.
So to be clear. I used MDJ and especially Gauner's build (good one) and on them spritebackup was working.
Then I went for HyperDroidGBXv5.0 which is the best for me (I mean for what I need from Android)... only issue... spritebackup was not working. So I imagined (maybe a not good shortcut) that it will not work on AOSP. It's written on the first post that all soft are not compatible with xxx (realize now it's maybe gingerbread instead of AOSP). Check Pongster thread, first page.
I didn't notice spritemigrate was not available anymore as I done this just once when I removed WM.
I also never noticed it can't transfer the agenda as I never backup it. If you do so, you will have all your meeting duplicate on the Lotus Server.
In fact, Outlook is my source for agenda (HD2 is just a display unit); HD2 is the source for my contact, I just keep a backup "in case".
You have to adapt all my findings to what you really need to do. But I think it's possible (maybe it required few steps as you can see).
It worth the effort when you have more than 400 contacts!!!
I don't know why I do this but I keep all sms, call logs and of course contacts from the first day of my phone.

I do keep all that data too, mainly just to stress out my phone into being a small database
Anyway, regarding sprite products: migrate is off the hook for now, no working products for the time being as this is out of the beta testing period, and there is no official version out.
I've read somewhere (looked like a legit howto website) that you could backup PIM data with WM sprite backup, and restore it inside Android with Android Sprite backup, but it appears that information was bogus, as sprite backup in android doesn't even recognize backup files made from WM, the extension is also different, and changing the extension doesn't solve it.
So the only viable option appears to be the installation of outlook to which you have to move all the data (contacts and agenda are ok, but will outlook save sms and call logs too? don't think so), and then import that data into android with MPE. I probably will have to "borrow" outlook somewhere
I'll check if I still have the beta.

For sync of sms I know that I can sync my SMS with outlook under Android (MyPhoneExplorer). Careful I just see that I can configure it but I never used it (will try next week and post the result here).
I remember a soft "Jeyo something" which gave me the ability to sync SMS with outlook on WM.
It was not so stable as it sometime crashed outlook. This was due to compatibility issue with DAMO and this was much more important for me. Google it as there is different version of Jeyo, one of it is for the sync WM/Outlook (you can sync but also send&receive SMS from Outlook... except the problem with DAMO very nice tool).
The Migrate tool can actually be still downloaded off the market, as there's a BETA2 around, it's just that the program refuses to work as it's expired.
I didn't try the old method of scamming the software telling it I live in the past (like in the old PC days), but the fact that the beta is the only functioning tool, and it's expired leaving no other options is sad enough to have deprived me of the interest in using it
When I sort out the reason for which android seems to vaporize the battery as soon as I start the superram build, then I may get hold of outlook to do the sync job together with MPE... thanks for the help until now

It's always on the first page of the NAND forum as so many people posts comments. I read it for a long time now and it has very small issues for everyone.
You just need to check if you like it or not. It required CWM... but if you manage to sync with outlook, you'll have no problem to use CWM
For the migration tool, didn't know it will expired. Lucky I move to Andoid long time ago.

Hi and thank you very much for your share and the very useful information.
I am currently using a HD2 (OS: 5.2.21913, ROM: 3.14.707.3 & Radio: 2.15.50.14) and have always wanted to switch over to running Android on this wonderful piece of hardware.
I have experimented running the SuperRAM FroYo Version 1.5 by darkstone1337
and must say that the performance was really, really fast and impressive.
However, one major consideration that is holding me back from switching over to Andorid is the potential lost of infromation in my Contacts (600+) and Appointments. These are currently sync to Outlook 2003 and like you, I prefer to manage these directly on my computer and not through a third party like Google.
Hence, I would like to find out from you:
1. Did you have any problem syncing your Contacts and Appointments on Outlook 2010 to your HD2 running the Andorid OS?
2. Did you encounter any loss with the Contact details like single contact with multiple addresses and contact numbers?
3. Did you also managed to transfer all of your SMS from Windows Mobile to Android? If so, what software did you use?

You mention getting the usb driver off the htc sync exe package... did you manage it, and so you can attach the driver in here?
Otherwise, as I'm downloading the almost 70MB (ach) package off htc website, I will try and get the driver off that instead. I do not plan to install that monster on my pc anyway
EDIT: I suppose there is no point in uploading ~15mb worth of stuff to megaupload, the setup exe uncompresses the BMP usb driver and HTC Driver setup in temp folders, but those files are still other installers. I didn't go as far as to exact the driver inf's, so well, good grief, just download and install htc sync

As explained i only sync my agenda with outlook. I use the phone just to display meetings. Contact are sync with mpe just as backup. I will provide more explanations from my laptop

Managed to copy over agenda and contacts by "borrowing" outlook 2007, sncing to it with WM, then syncing from it to android with MPE. Outlook would crash the first time whenever it was called by MPE, but after a reboot it just worked, even if very slowly.
After that, I suppose you can ditch Outlook since you can have agenda and contacts sync through MPE with thunderbird (with lightning addon).
Anyway, I need to thank the OP "negatively": thanks to him explaining how to copy over PIM data without google poking its nose in it, I could focus on actually testing android instead of being distracted by the PIM transfer dilemma.
Doing this, I realized a shocking thruth:
Android is all fun and games, until you actually need to work with your phone.
Even PocketPC2002's excel was better than any spreadsheet app you find in the market, handbase for android is crippled to the point that any other free database in the market is equal in functionalities, and still useless for me.
And after that, I didn't go on checking alternatives to other applications I use on WM to manage my job
On the other side, when you need to do flashy things with your phone, like browsing imdb or keeping a workout/calory burning schedule, or manage your own virtual cafeteria, well android is good
It works for me, too.

So do not test WM7!!!! It's worst
The problem is that you're not the targeted customer anymore
In the past, "profesional" bought handheld devices. There were not fun but all the sync, office app... were mandatory. Now, these devices are for normal end users. At least with android you can still have a "sort of" profesional use even if it's more job than with WM6.
That's life... but for "profesional geeks" it's hard days

I've sync'ed my email contacts but the phone contacts not sure about.

If it were me i would sync all my contacts in to outlook, setup a live or gmail account and import them all from outlook, either by using the outlook connector or by exporting them all to a CVS or something, live and gmail provide a way of importing these files , when you setup WP7 you just sync the live/gmail account and bobs your uncle
as for SMS, i think your out of luck im afraid, if you want to back them up and still have access to them i would suggest using Microsoft My Phone, that will allow you to transfer all your SMSs to an online backup utility, you can then just connect to it on your phone to look at them, but there is no way of transfering them to your phone....at the moment anyway
you'd think Ms would make it easy for users to upgrade from wm6.5 to 7!

i cant find it now but on one of the many MS blogs out there i read that the My Phone team are making a new version with WP7 in mind, dont know if its true, and i cant find the link, i stumbled on it a while back by mistake, but anyhow, it stands to reason that they will have something like that at some point, perhaps they are waiting for Mango which already has several large changes over NoDo, who knows! just need to wait and see
yeah there were a few rumurs a while back

but nothing recently. only things im missing is the call recording feature and MyPhone, but at the moment i'm having to get live without each.
I hope Mango has Myphone, it was one of the best services (if not THE best service) that MS had for WM.
