So, I just text from t-mo telling me that they're new network had made my phone faster, but so far I haven't noticed a difference. Anyone else get a text out notice some speed increases?

Download the SpeedTest.net app, do a couple tests and post your speeds here. I work for Tmo and we have HSPA+ at the call center (very congested cell site), and I have gotten up to almost 5Mbps download speeds there. On regular 3G I get only like 1Mbps max.
1.46/d & 1.29/u best out of three, with full signal and 3G. I ran it earlier, right after I got the text, and it wasn't nearly that fast-
Stupid question- will the data indicator say something other than 3G when on an hspa+ network?

"H" if you're on the new radio
Ok, so the 'H' just means hspa. I think whether or not it says 'H' or '3G' depends on the rom you happen to be using.

Yes, you are correct. I figure that T-Mobile made the hspa icon 3g was so that people didn't get confused between gprs, edge, and 3g. Some roms will have editted the icon so that it will show an h. It's something along those line.

Where are these networks located? I barely get 3G as is, phone constantly changing from G to E and really pissing me off.
The new radio alone will not make it show the H. I didn't get the H until I flashed CM6, now I always see it. I don't have HSPA+ around my home, but at the Tmo call center, I have seen up to 4Mbps download, and it's pretty congested there.

But yeah can't wait to have it around my house, as my Verizon DSL sucks and I'd love to have a nice backup connection.

I work and live about 10 & 20 miles north of boston, respectively. The fastest speed I've seen was 2.4mbps, and I've only seen that once. Usually I get around .5/1.2mbps with full signal.

I'm in medford and don't get anything as good as this
Hello,
I was wondering if there was anyway to strictly run off of 3G? I was using cm6.1 rc 2 for a bit but noticed it switches constantly between H and 3G.. and in return rapes my battery. While rooted with setcpu profiles I get 5-7 hours more battery life while running on only edge. Anyone have any ideas?

Switching from edge to 3G is a lot different from switching from 3G to HSPA+ which uses the same technology. Cyanogen just made the signal icon more accurate, because the stock rom doesnt differentiate between HSPA (3G) and HSPA+. ANybody with a standard 3G phone will tell you that running solely on 2G will save you a ton of battery. The difference from 3G to 3.5G (HSPA+), however, is negligable.
Either use 2G or use HSPA... i agree cyanogen should have an option to stop differentiating 3G fro 4G since it can be distracting.... and ignorance is bliss afterall.

so wait im running cynogen mod RC 2 will it give me a 3G icon instead of a H cuz i always get confused whether im on 3g or HSPA+(3.5g)
You can do this actually... search for the thread about editing the radio settings in system/build.prop

And there is really no battery damage from 3g to hspa switching. U could just enable 2g only in settings.

Thanks.

H=hspa, meaning tmobiles version of 4g. Actually its more like 3.75g
How TO enable 3G no htc DESIRE HD. I am not getting any options in settings to enable 3G . Even in network mode i get gsm and wcdma. Pls help

WCDMA is 3G en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W-CDMA_(UMTS) read the first line
Are you sure about this
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
Yes I'm sure. What else than 3G would it be as GSM (2G) is already separated there in the options? The DHD isn't a 4G phone so it can't be that.
In what way do you need to enable 3G ie how did you come to that conclusion that it's not on?
In that case that I misunderstood you and you mean how to enable mobile network then go to Settings -> Wireless & networks and tick the Mobile network box. In order for this to work you have to have the correct APN settings from your network provider.
I turned it on but the problem is sometimes I get H written on data indicator sometimes I get 3G written

Don't worry, H and 3g are really the same thing. Don't believe me? Do a line speed test
My Xperia x10 behaves the same way! By after testing the dl speed i quickly realized they where the same. My maximum speed is 689 kb/s. On 3g and H, on g its 3-6 kb/s

That isn't exactly right as there is WCDMA (UMTS basically the most used), HSPA (HSDPA, HSUPA) and various others as FOMA, CDMA and sometimes even EDGE is considered 3G. They all vary in terms of speed and they mostly overlap in cities. So the reason for your test results might be that you have a limited speed from your operator, low signal on a faster network etc.
Someone with more knowledge on the exact htc symbols can explain in to which categories the 3g and H represent. The H symbol means that you are on one of the fastest networks and the next would be 4G but the device doesn't support it.
I think the H shows that the phone is using HSPA connection (currently the fastest 3G standard I think) and 3G and so on when the connection is slower.
Confused

You can have 3 different indicators for mobile internet (apart from WIFI) on your Desire HD.
G is very slow, but it's what you get when you have the Network Mode set to GSM only.
H is the fastest you can get when you have Network Mode set to WCDMA Only or WCDMA/GSM.
Whenever you have Network Mode set to WCDMA Only or WCDMA/GSM and it shows 3G, this means H is not available but you are using 3G connection. The speed of your connection is obviously between G and H.
Basically G<3G<H

You obviously have 3G enabled, the H just stands for fast 3G connection.
G<E<3G<H

UMTS/WCDMA is the 3G standard whereas GSM is a 2g standard.
While in a 2G network your phone may show E or G which stand for EDGE and GPRS respectively.
In a 3G network you may get H or 3G which is HSPA(high speed packet access) and 3Generation respectively.
As mentioned earlier by others the speed in increasing order is-
G<E<3G<H.
I hope that makes it clear.
Hello,
is there a way to turn on 3G but with disabled HSPA/HSDPA (3.5G). I only want 3G.
I know 3G is not as fast as HSPA/HSDPA.
For Galaxy S it works like this:

Thanks
You could try playing around with the service menu.
