I call this a new recommendation because I haven't seen before. It comes from an HTC service representative, and aside from factory resetting the phone and looking at app size/cache sizes (not app data) for various apps via Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All (menu, sort by size), I was still "normal." The largest app on my phone was the FiOS app at 14.6MB. After that, everything was smaller. I had 451MB remaining in my application storage, 5+ GB internal free, 11+ (of 16GB) free on my SD card, and ~90MB available in cache space. In essence he told me that the low space error message was generic in nature and could be indicative of an app running out of "space" instead of my phone running low on space.
The recommendation the HTC support person gave me to try today was clearing my browser cookie data, cache, and history. The reason we went to this step was because I had noticed and mentioned to him that, with only one window open, the browser was using ~50MB resident. This was an observation I made after looking at the Internet app resource usage numbers via the System Panel app. The odd thing is that this memory usage didn't show up in in the Settings menu. Clearing the caches is done from the settings menu of the Internet app (from within the browser app, tap the 'menu' button on your phone and then scroll down to "Privacy Settings"). Now my Internet app uses ~14MB with one window open. After doing this step, and without a restart, my issue with the low space error went away (hooray!). It's a basic recommendation I know but in the searching about this error I have not read it before and actually read the HTC was denying the issue existed. I should note that we talked about the mail app, however there was noting too out of whack as System Panel showed it as using 12MB and it had no cache I could clear.
Another recommendation I received was managing the number of messages in each of my threads in the default messaging app. Essentially the more messages I have the greater the possibility that I run into an issue of a generic message sending failure. I asked a second representative about the thread limiting feature (under settings of the messaging app) and the fact that I had backed up and restored my text messages before, and now they were not being properly managed (i.e. I had 152 messages in a thread when I was telling my phone to keep 130). The second representative was the one who was conducting my customer satisfaction survey at the end of the call. He put me on hold for (at most) two minutes and then came back with an Incredible and told me that the feature is designed to keep the last 100 messages on my phone should a cell provider decide to clear text messages from their server. He also advised me to keep an eye on Dialer Storage, and that if it gets above 15-20 MB I should clear the data. He warned me of the importance of this app as it stores some of my email account info (if I remember correctly) and text message cache, so clearing that app does not come lightly. As I stand right now my Dialer Storage is ~7.14 (with 6.84 in data) when viewed in Settings menu. Though my Messages app says it only has 824kb or data and 2.2MB of total space in the Settings menu, it stands at ~18.5MB in the System Panel app.
I've noticed that after getting one of my threads down to 100 messages (my new limit) it's now staying at that limit at least for the one thread I tried it on. So maybe the thread limiting feature does work. I hope this info helps someone else with this problem and does not have cache issues that show up readily when looking at apps in the Settings menu.
P.S. I also asked the first representative about Push Messages in the messaging app. I was told it has to do with supplemental data that can come along with email accounts that use the POP and IMAP mail types. He also told me that it's possible that some carrier messages can end up there as well.

Hey guys, stumbled across this forum while searching for help with another issue and it's been a great help so far.
Anyway, have a new problem with the phone. I have (or atleast had) a fair amount of messages from various people. On my birthday of all days (I guess I was getting larger than average amount of messages?), the phone decided to display some error message which I didn't see and then deleted all of my messages, so people have messaged me for my bday and I have no idea what they have said, haha, but thats a seperate problem.
Went into the settings and the phone has checked 'delete old messages' again even though I made sure this was off when I first got the phone.
I changed it back and checked again... the phone has checked the box again. No matter what I do it keeps checking the box.
Any ideas?
I have that bug too. I do not know how to solve it. In order not to del my old messages, I just increase the text message limit (from 200 to 1000).
I have the exact same problem. Very annoying. I've lost a fair amount messages due to this too. Now I've increased the text message limit from 200 to 500 and I backup all my SMSes to my gmail account using "SMS Backup" every night. Seems to be the only way to preserve old messages at the moment.

I've done that now too (up to 5000 as thats the limit), so hopefully it should be ok now, but I'd still like to know how to turn this auto delete function off if possible. I bought this phone because I was sick of how controlling the iPhone was, don't really want another phone that does what it wants, haha.
Up until today it used to just ask me if I want to delete older messages everytime I went into messages, but now its just decided it's going to do it.
Temp. Fix-ish.
I don't want to bump an old thread and I don't know if this has been solved yet but when I discovered this I did some tinkering and discovered it appears to be triggered by backing out of the messaging service using the back key. The trick is to use the home key to take you back to the home screen. This will allow you to always have "Delete old messages" unticked.
Until a fix is out I hope this helps.
I had this issue before!
Surprisingly, it went away after flashing to another firmware (which turned out not liking) and then flashing back to my old firmware via Kies.
If you're unwilling to go that route, then I suggest using a different messaging app such as Handcent SMS or something like it and bypass the default messaging app all together. It doesn't look as nice as the default messaging app IMHO but it does not have all the quirks the former gives (like changing 3-SMS long messages to an MMS automatically...irritating!)
I heard Froyo will be fixing the annoyance I just mentioned. Maybe once the official Froyo from Samsung comes out all these small annoyances would go away.
That 3-long SMS to MMS is annoying because I get unlimited SMS but it charges me the standard rate for MMS so it's stupid.
I never really reach the 5000 limit and I'm happy using the home key method as it is but good options otherwise.
As found on Android Cental for those that are curious.
Here is the changelog for EB01:

Can anyone confirm that the 160+ character text messages to non Verizon users now works?
Yes it does for me at least
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
did the calendar colors actually change. i cant place what is different. its a trivial change but i was curious. also hoping they would jazz it up more
the best calendar change is that the google calendar is set to default instead of the local phone one.
nice 7 and 17 are what I was looking forward to getting fixed.
Someone please help! Having read the very little amount of content I can find so far, I am extremely concerned that somehow some or all of my text messages are being relayed to an email account via the Service (SmsRelayService) that is running under the app Exchange Services.
I don't seem to be able to find anything conclusive, but what I have found is that it is likely to be relaying text messages to an Exchange Account?
I can stop the Service and it stays 'stopped' until a text message is received and it starts running again.
Now have a Note 4, having upgraded because my last handset appeared to have been tampered with and was also behaving in this manner, as well as my Google Location History recording me in places that I never was. On that handset there were even more questionable apps running, one of which appeared to be some form of spyware when searched in Google!
Is there any way that you can dig deep into the operating system of the device and see what is going on?
Is there any way of identifying is my suspicions and those of others that I have seen post similar stories are correct?
One of the reasons I started to question it initially and then look into it was because I was receiving overly descriptive and some unnecessary text messages from someone and at the same time, another device nearby was demonstrating email notification sounds!
Not only that, but certain things that I had not discussed with certain people, but had discussed over text with others (in no way related or connected) were being brought up!
Help please.... is SmsRelayService under the app Exchange Services something to be worried about?????
I was also shocked by the lack of information on this "SmsRelayService" There are tunz of questions out there about it.
After much research and messing with my phone I feel the service is stock BUT can be hijacked by some unknown application to send all texts to a 3rd party. My x was getting my text messages somehow. In her email account i found she had set up a service on her own phone first to test and she would receive every text on the phone and also location. I assume she set it up on her own phone first to figure it out then she put it on my phone. I have a rooted phone with a custom rom. strangely the SmsRelayService had permission for EVERYTHING on my phone. From sms to photos and every single admin right possible. I doubt this is normal for that service. my custom Rom has a "App ops" menu that shows what the service has used or not. In my case it looks like she was only accessing my sms messages. Killing the service did not help as when a new text came in it started back up and accessed the new messages. Once i removed all the permissions for "SmsRelayService" in the "App ops" menu i no longer had the problem of the service accessing the texts. Without this menu option i don’t know how i would have stopped it. I'd assume there is an app or process killer out there that would have been able to shut it down but it'd take someone else with a normal rom to let us know.
in my case I’m lucky it was only sms's. It looks as though whatever she put on my phone was only getting sms's. the app having access to all rights on the phone a better or more in depth spy app/program could have accessed much more. Only spying my sms activity i did not notice ANY extra battery drain. Also this app is known with Microsoft exchange and that messes up a lot of the research. I have never setup any other account but a gmail account so without a link there i don’t know why else it'd been activated in the first place if not for a spy app. I'll try and post back in a few weeks after i'v been able to see if she suddenly doesn’t have information that she shouldn’t know.
Sorry folks I have to vent a little bit here. I have never been so unhappy with a phone. Especially considering the price tag on this thing.
I bought this in september 2016 did not buy device insurance because I had an otter box defender case waiting for the phone as soon as I got it. Despite the heavy duty case, a 3 foot fall from my pocket left me with a shattered screen, 1 month into ownership.
Let that go.....
Now I have been dealing with a phone that does not send text messages in a timely manner. Text messages and group text messages lag in "pending status" for minutes to hours or never deliver to the recipient(s).Text messaging in general is a very laggy experience which makes no sense considering how powerful this thing is suppose to be.
I have done all of the following which only offer temporary relief for delayed messaging. I have to do these things regularly just get messages out of "pending" status.
1) Wipe partition cache. I wipe this regularly to but still after a few hours the messages start slowing down and do not send.
2) settings > applications > messages ( version 4.0.65 ) > storage "clear data" & "clear cache"
3) ##72786#
4) rebooting phone
5) Go to the sprint app > connectivity > diagnostics > update PLR.
6) Tried different messaging apps
**NOTE: I have not done a factory reset. Also I do not delete text messages because I need them for my job.
**NOTE: I do not have a problem with receiving text messages.
**NOTE: This happens everywhere even places where I have full LTE coverage.
Phone Specs:
Galaxy S7 Edge for Sprint
Android Version 7.0
Kernel Version 3.18.31 - 10318620
Software Version G935PVPS4BQC1
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this phone not designed to store large amounts of text message data? Could this be affecting messages from being sent.
I honestly am at wits end on this. Nothing seems to work but I cannot lose all my text messages with a factory reset.
Thank you for any suggestions
Never had that issue but could be from broken screen (digitizer outer front glass) could be an issue you won't know until u do a factory reset and as far as text goes you can back them up with Galaxy App like you do with Google for contacts just go to accounts and choose Samsung Account u must be signed in and back it up/ Sync then do Factory reset and then restore u should have options to restore pics, contacts, text mess, etc good luck

I have about 800 text conversations spanning 2 years. Do you think this could be affecting the phones ability to send the message?
Text messaging speed is highly network dependent not device. On top of that no carrier promises instant text message delivery, but most promise delivery within 24 hours. When im at home which is a relatively rural area it tends to send texts 2x-3x faster than in the city. And even then sometimes it takes 15+ min for it to actually be delivered.
And before you say it no it has absolutely nothing to do with your device because an old device worked better. Because it's dependent upon your network conditions now not back in the past with an old device with old Network conditions

Though if you think it may be the phone a factory data reset may be the only option because sometimes during an update settings may fail to correctly update and a fdr is the only way to correctly fix it without rooting and much much effort
Recently I stopped using the default andriod messenger and been using facebook messenger instead. Seem to be an improvement however I do notice that when friends try to send a picture in a group message they never download.
My suspicion is that the size of your sms data has overrun some assumption in the sms client code. To check this, install Signal. (Signal does not use the default SMS data storage.) Do not import you existing messages to Signal or set Signal as your default messaging program (yet). Open Signal, select a contact and send a SMS. (Note that you can send insecure even to another Signal user by holding the send button down.) If Signal is consistently fast, the volume of old messages may be the issue.
SERIOUSLY Everbody - Use Signal and set the password in Signal, especially if your messages would be valuable to someone else. Google Signal if you have any doubts...
If Signal works better, I would backup the device and then import the messages to Signal. I strongly syspect Signal will handle things just fine assuming that my suspicion about the cause of your problem is correct.
Once the import is done, check your send and recieve performance, if you like it, use Signal as your default messaging client and be done.
If Signal chokes on or after the import, report it to the developer (via email link in play store). Then look at doing an xml export of you messages for use with an xml viewer app. You could even import that xml into a google sheets document if you do not care about google + world + dog (NSA already has 'em) reading those messages...
All this assumes that you are not out of space on the partition that holds the data of course.
I'm trying to figure out if there is anything besides the normal intelligent control/optimize/don't optimize that could be affecting an app working in the background?
I use Google Messages on both my phone and PC (messages.google.com) to keep from having to pick up my phone a billion times a day. I had very few issues with my phone showing as "Connected" in the web app with my OP7P, but within a minute or two of locking my screen on the OP8P, the web app shows "connecting" and won't typical work again until I wake up my phone and open Messages (waking the phone alone isn't enough).
Messages is set to "Don't Optimize" in the app settings, just like it was on my OP7P. Is the 8P more aggressive about letting apps stay awake?
**EDIT**
Google Messages is the number one app under "detailed usage" at 11% for the day, so it's definitely not for lack of running. Maybe it it's just an issue with the app on this phone.
I'm using mine now, Mac though, but it works from home too.
Haven't changed any settings for battery optimization.
Forget computer on messages for web.
On phone, force close, clear data, uninstall app.
Reboot.
Reinstall app, reconnect to g messages via QR
Also im using the app not the web version, seems to work better.
