God bless clockwork - Droid X General

more than once I have messed up my phone and after a little work,( am old and remembering what i did the last time is some times difficult) but it has bailed my ass out again. Thanks Clockwork recovery.

I haven't had to restore a backup yet (knock on wood), but I know it's there if I need it. Kousch did a great job simplifying the process.

[Q] help installing nandroid

I have searched around on here and other forums as well as watched a few youtube videos about nandroid but have failed to find what i really need to know. I am apparently missing the one little piece to get me started here. From what i can tell Nandroid should be in my clockwork recovery, but it is not. So how do I get that in the clockwork menu so i can use it?
I am running the Syndicate ROM with Xtreme Kernel. I have downloaded nandroid files to my PC but thats as far as I have gotten.
Any help without getting verbally abused would be much appreciated. THANKS!
Ok so first of all when you go into recovery is it green? If it Is you have clockwork but if its blue you have stock recovery. If it is clocwork then just go to backup/restore and backup your current system its tht easy ad no other things installed other than clockworkmod.

yes i do have clockwork. So thats it? I was expecting something to say nandroid IN the menu. Wow sometimes things truly are TOO easy LOL.
thanks a lot
No problem man. Some things are that easy and it can save your ass to if you **** up your phone somehow.

Correct me if I am wrong.......

Had my X for a week now. It is rooted and running DarkSlideBlur 4.2, I have several other ROM's I am wanting to try out......
If I understand what I have been reading right, I can use Nandroid Backups to return to ROM's I like, or is it better to reflash them?
Trying to avoid the whole setup process....
Thanks in advance
Mace
A nandroid would be the route to go. It restores your phone to the exact state it was when you backed it up. Every call text message everything will be as it was.
Nandroid all the way. Works every time

As already stated, a nandroid is a best bet. Just keep in mind if you do any updates (OTA) and the radio gets updated (i.e. 2.3.15 to 2.3.340) an old nandroid will brick your phone due to an older bootloader
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Thanks guys! I thought that was the case, as I have been all over these forums "researching" for a couple months before I got the X!
Now off to research "Radio"?? (thats a new one to me)
But what if you mount your system and get stuck in the bootup. i cant even get to the recovery. i dont know what to do.
Nandroid always has your back. Something gets screwed and you are stuck in a boot loop, plug in the usb or charger, pull the battery, put it in and boot up. That will hijack back into Clockwork.
Always Wipe Data/Factory Reset, Wipe Cache/Advanced/Wipe Dalvik before you flash a new ROM and you "almost" always avoid a boot loop.

that is clockwork recovery, the stock recovery is accessed with a combination of hard keys which i am not sure which they are off the top of my head. in that you can wipe, but unfortunately no nandroid restore.
I tried every rom out there. The fastest most stable best battery life is stock. Deodexed stock. You can theme and font.

The hard keys are volume down and camera button if you wanted to know
Thats to get to the bootloader. Recovery is home and power and hold on until it comes up. To get into safe mode you hold power and the menu button

Need Help

I tried installing a new ROM and kernal on my continuum using the CWM and now when I start up my phone the whole screen is just a bunch of random colors I did a backup and restore and now its starts up in the discolored screen then a voice says restore and the phone restarts PLEASE HELP
which rom and kernel?
rom dl17 clean
kernel pbJ
I think I forgot to reboot and installed them both before rebooting i can still get into cvm and tried my restore but still have same issue except now it just constantly has a womans voice saying restore and the phone restarts
You need to install another kernel.... Install Adryn's kernel through cwm... You can easily find it in development... You flashed a voodoo kernel without knowing what you were getting your self into and how to fix it if it went wrong, *tisk tisk*
If you need more help, just ask

ok i figured out how to get this kernel installed but now it just sits at the SAMSUNG white startup screen what do I do now?
ok now I tried this
If that doesn't work, which is probably won't, then reflash the stock recovery, then try the cwm v4 adryn recovery, then try the stock kernel, and then the system image, all in Odin... In that order
and its starts up like it used to and gets stuck at the Verizon Wireless screen?
You can do your backup now...

Helpful fella, that guy.
Hey guys, so I flashed the novoodoo kernel last night and when I rebooted it put me into a boot loop, I tried to restore my back-up and it said it failed to unmount /system I did a factory reset and it took care of the loop and my phone is fine now with novoodoo installed but I can't find out why I can't restore my back-ups... and I'm using the yellow clockwork for back-up and restore
Honestly i've been doing a crap ton of research on all this since I got my phone back in January and I really feel like I'm missing something small and obvious

Before i yell at you, let me make sure....
Are you using the Yellow CWM or the Blue CWM?
Just yellow... it's the only one I've used
Sent from my Continuum Transfunctioner
Ah, alright... well, yellow isn't that good at restoring... try blue! Lol
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA Premium App
xP of course! Shame on me for not doing a backup in both blue and yellow... but after the factory reset my sns feeds on the ticker actually worked for once... for like ten minutes...

Lol, I know what you mean brother man I would stop messing with it though, because we are getting the 2.2 update soon xD which should hopefully fix it!

Not sure where to post!!

Weird thing happened this morn.
Downloaded renamed to pc49img.zip(not yours Yoda) and flashed a splash to my phone, now when phone rebooted I got a strange txt box saying something not matching blah blah need to wipe data blah blah? With only 1 option to press I'm feeling lucky so I pressed it. Phone kind of started to load but everything started to force close. Wow. Reboot same again!! So did full wipe everything except sdcard. Nandroid restored and ok again now!!! Q1. So what happened?
Q2. I have custom mtd and I totally forgot to do the bravo loading sequences as supposedly required BUT I have my mtd loaded as normal.why did this work?
Q3. Is my wilderbeast haunted lol.?
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Q1-? ?????
Q2- your nandroid backup will preserve the file size, but a full wipe and flash a new rom they should reset.
Q3- yes you're phone is possessed by an evil spirit named Andy roid and its trying to take over the world, flash it quick!
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium
Lol @ scratch. I'm giving it exorcism tonight.
Edit: seems its worse than I thought!! This must be a womanized haunting and be Andy's wife..... Emma roid. Just lost all xda apps data for no reason. WTF is going on.

[Q]Clockwork mod autostartup?

This is wierd, not sure if this is common. I have CLockworkMod Touch flashed. Whenever I turn the phone completely off, CWMtouch boots up when I plug a charger in, whether it be USB or AC. Is it supposed to do this?

I heard it was a bug, but I had it installed on my spare phone which has a broken power button, thus making it a useful bug. So useful in fact, I asked madmaxx82 to try and mimic the bug on 4ext & I was amazed when he did it! madmaxx82 & 4ext is the superior recovery! If you aren't using it, I would hope you'd consider 4ext, I've tried both and had errors with cwm, & haven't ever had errors with 4ext.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium
Thanks for the reply! I would flash 4ext, but some of my most recent backups with CWM as I am trying out more roms. I'll change to it sooner or later.
EDIT:
I thought about it, and said fk it. I just flashed 4ext on my phone and my wifes phone as well lol. Really nice. Haven't used it since my G1/Dream days.
I know this for sure, I just recently met madmaxx82, which is to say I had a very small issue, which turned out to be my fault (no surprise there), but he bent over backwards to help me. I really like him, & I love 4ext. I think you will be happy with your choice. And I think u can still use your backups with 4ext, but I'm not 100% sure. Just in case Id make a current one. Also, I don't know if its wise or not, but I don't save nandroid backups beyond my current Rom. In other words, I'm running Leedroid right now, I have only that backup. I usually make a fresh one every couple days.

CWM backups are compatible with 4EXT. In fact, 4EXT backs up ROMs into the CWM folder!

I thought I had a glitch or bug on my sd card, because u r right, my backups go to "clockworkmod" folder. I've known that for several weeks, I just forgot. Also,If anyone has a broke power button, and can't power up their phone, and don't have a pc to reboot it, I have a 4ext recovery img you can flash, so that you plug in ye phone and it automatically boots into recovery.
Sent from my HTC GLACIER using xda premium
@invasion2 - Thanks, thats good to know its compatible both ways.
@jjbadd385 - that img you speak of, is that an back up image or a 4ext mod?
It's a 4ext mod, I flashed it over the most current version of 4ext & it didn't change the build number.

Thank you. This is a relief. I have bugging out since yesterday trying to figure out WTF. I thought for certain my Inspire 4G had some kind of hardware glitch. The battery life was miserable. I unrooted and flashed the stock RUU to see if I could fix it. Until this afternoon my battery life still sucked. Now it is starting to show some signs of returning to normal. The upside to this experience is that I am being sent a free battery despite being out of warranty and not eligible for an upgrade. AND I can root again
