Hi
I just found a piece of software that claims to backup WM5 contacts it is 'ns contacts backup' from http://www.nyxbull.net/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownloaddetails&lid=10
Anyway, I have had to install .NET Compact Framework v2.0, another 'Microsoft Bloater' that forced me to remove programs from memory to install it as it wanted nearly 6MB of main memory.
Anyway I have it installed now, do I need to keep it on my Hard Drive? This lousy piece of software installs just "one 5MB CAB file", yet it takes 91.0MB of Hard Drive space, and demands over 130MB to install itself, all for a 5MB CAB file.
Does anyone know which CAB it actually installs, I could not make out the full name on my Phone during install?
I was just wondering, after Hard Reset can .NET Compact Framework v2.0, be reinstalled by a local CAB file on the storage card, rather than using this bloated installer again?
Thanks

It's Micro$oft - what did you expect?
Sorry I can't answer you question regarding cab name since I am avoiding .NET CF like fire.
I am sure though that if you find the cab you can use it to install after hard reset.
Try this:
Start the installer, while ActiveSync asks you if to install to default location go to ActiveSync folder on your PC (probably in program files) and look for a cab (any cab) it should be there, or at least an *.ini file that contains the path to it (maybe the cab is in temp folder).
As for backing up contacts, there is a simple and painless way that doesn't require any installation.
In the built in file explorer select "show all files" option. Then in the root of the device you will see a file named 'pim.vol'. Just copy that to your SD.
Also I read that the new version of .NET CF 2.1 lets you install most of it on SD to save memory, but like I said I didn't try it and I don't recommend it either.

Thanks for that, the contacts were the only thing stopping me Hard Resetting and reinstalling. I have spent the past few weeks installing and uninstalling trying different software and settings to get the phone the way I want it. Now I have everything, I can reset and install everything fresh, that should then be my phone finished, until something else catches my eye.
Sorry forgot to say, so what is the purpose of Outlook with relation to this phone?
As I said, it does not pick up the phone as a device or drive, and activesync says it cannot be used for backing up contacts, so what purpose does it serve?
Seems pointless to me, would have been better if Microsoft built in some proper contact management software, after all this device was designed for business use.

The fact that ActiveSync synchronizes contacts between the device and OutLook means that your contacts ARE backed up. Well that may be how they (M$) see it any way.

But I am not getting anything in Outlook. It is just sitting there doing nothing, when I look down the device list my phone is not there, so how do I use it?
Thanks
Hi again
I have been doing some more digging and I have found that the CAB required is 'NETCFv2.wm.armv4i.cab', this CAB is 2.13 MB (2,240,512 bytes), so Microsoft requires over 130 MB to install itself, and hogs 91.0 MB (95,473,664 bytes) of Hard Drive space for a 2.13 MB CAB.
I found this info on http://blogs.msdn.com/netcfteam/archive/2005/10/11/479793.aspx
To save everyone the trouble I had, I tried uploading the CAB but for some reason it is not being accepted on this post, all I am getting is sending request to forum, nothing is happening. If it is wanted I will try again later.

I thought so. I had over 80MB left on my storage card, I selected storage card, but it kept giving me an error message saying I did not have enough main storage. I had to remove programs to install it, all I wanted to do was backup my contacts. Thanks to flaming Microsoft again, we get a business phone where you can not manage contacts. Microsoft the company that can never get anything right and makes Bill Gates the richest man in history, you couldn't make up such a story, could you?

Why are my posts being sent twice?
I only submit once.
Little explanation about ActiveSync and Outlook:
Your device doesn't appear anywhere as a separate ... anything.
You get a folder in file explorer that lets you browse the device, but that's it.
As for Outlook, everything that is in there and you choose to sync is copied to the Outlook on the phone and viceversa.
You can choose to sync contacts, appointments, mail, notes and tasks. You can choose how far back the device will save mails and appointments to save space. You can also sync directly with an exchange server if you got one.
So just to be clear, you sync the stuff you got, there is no separation.
I have read all of the Wiki's and quite a few other postings and will try my first flash when i get home. Does anyone have any advice for me before i try anything? I just got the Wing and it is my 1st PDA and I am very excited to start customizing it but i dont want to trash or as i've heard "brick" the thing so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
flashing a new ROM is actually wwwwaaay easier then the threads teaching you make it seems.
advice is... flash to a custom ROM.
decide what you want your phone to be able to do. compare the different ROMs before you flash. collect and organize cabs etc for the programs you will want to install after flashing. then go for it!!
Thanks for the response. How do io even start to flash do i need special sodtware on my PC. and what is SPL? i read i need 4.0 or higher or i will brick my phone. when i say i am a newb i mean complete newb. i dont even know where to start to install the files or anything.
to check your SPL, perform a soft reset while pressing the camera button. You should see a three colored screen with the words IPL and SPL and whatever. If SPL is over 4, then you can use USPL (temporary unlock) or HardSPL (permanent unlock). Note that in this case unlock means the removal of a block that forbids the flashing of custom roms. This is called a CID unlock.
SPL = Secondary Program Loader
similar to the BIOS in a pc..tells the device to load windows, etc
Hard-SPL = is a "permanent" change/upgrade..in this our case it changes your SPL to "yang4.7" or something like that
Herald-USPL = temporary upgrade to HTC Herald SPL 5+
thanks MV3 for the deffinitions and explanation it really helped alot. where can i find some .cab files at.
not like i wanted.
well things did not go like i wanted because i couldn't even backup my damn contacts because the stupid activesync wont back them up. getting tired so i will try this again tomorrow.
download and install HTC Backup
or PIM Backup..cuz they are freeware hehe
connect to your usb and transfer/install on your device. then you can run the program and backup or restore your contacts, messages, notes, calendar, etc.
if you have a data / internet package..you should be able to download through your phone....if that's not working.. you can download it to your computer..then email it to yourself... but really, via usb is much faster/easier.
cool can i active sync the files i need with this software to or no. and how exactly do i active sync a .cab or flash or anything for that matter.
well... synchronizing with active sync kinda sucks... and is rather annoying
it just synchronizes windows outlook, outlook/ms contacts, and other ms stuff.
if the file is a pc installation/setup file.. you need to connect your phone via usb.. then run the file on your computer and it installs it to your phone... your phone will ask where you want to install it.
if it's a .cab file, transfer it to your phone... then search for where you put it and run the .cab file.
to transfer files between your pc and your phone... on your pc's activesync... click "Explore"... or just open my computer/windows explorer.. and open Mobile Device..or whatever your computer named it.
to flash.. the instructions are usually on that ROM's page..
ok i got it. so i dont necessarily need to install it to a specific folder, just somewhere i will remember.
correct

FYI: There is a way around this. When you execute the .exe file it does establish a .cab file in the folder on your PC for ActiveSync to use to install it on your Phone. So, what I have done in the past is go to the folder on my PC, find the .cab file and then transfer that .cab file to my SD Card and then install the .cab file on your phone. Search for where you put it on your Phone SD card and run the .cab file. It does work as I have done it many times. Then continue as stated below.
ok I will try it that way too thanks guys for all your advice. all I,ve done so far is a game and some themes.but I want to get my wing running faster so what should I install. and how can I run a app and still listen to wmedia at the same time?

To make it faster, you have to kill a lot of the junk that's in it from starting up, or you can use any third party ROM.
Hello fellow newbie..
Beleive me i feel u and all these questions ur asking, i was in the same boat and for the most part still am about certain things...i to wanted my device (wing) to run faster and EVERYONE advised me to flash a 3rd party rom (ttran biggy 3.0 is awesome) heres the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365607
not only is it fast and slick lookin but it gets rid of all that 'stuff' u dont need and frees up ALOT of memeory so u can still add stuff (cabs/programs) u want...he even provides instructions and 'how-tos' on the thread just follow exactly using USPL instructions when flashing...if u are in need of cabs go to the 'Herald' section or click here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=348) its the same device and concepts as the Wing, ull find everythin u need here

There are many people who cannot connect with ActiveSync. I had trouble with it for months. So, that is another way of installing an application without using ActiveSync. This is also used as you said, to save the Cab file on your SD card.
Thanks Ivan i have read your "how to flash" thead alot of your other postings bro so i know you have this thing down pack and appreciate the advice.
Thank you too timace any dod and dont's advice you have feel free to Pm me or post it. I just dont want to brick my phone.

HI, I have just got the HD2 and have been on the HTC website and found a variety of updates for my phone. I follow these instructions:-
"This update for HTC HD2 allows for contacts stored on your SIM card to be properly displayed on your phone along with Phone and Exchange Server contacts.
Installation Instructions:
Note: This update is only for ROM versions less than or equal to 1.59.XXX.X.
Follow the instructions below to download and install the Update on your device:
Make sure you have Microsoft ActiveSync® installed on your Windows XP PC or Windows Mobile Device Center on your Windows Vista® PC. You can find Microsoft ActiveSync from this link or Windows Mobile Device Center from this link.
Connect and synchronize your device with your PC via Microsoft ActiveSync® or Windows Mobile Device Center using the USB cable.
To download the Update, first select the check box below. Next, select the Update and the desired FTP site then click Download.
To install the Update, tap the RUU.exe file on your PC and follow the on-screen instructions.
DOWNLOAD: To download this software, please follow the steps below:
1. Please select the file most suitable for your device:
--Please Select-- Update for HTC HD2 SIM Contacts
2. Please select a location closest to you:
--Please Select-- Europe 1 Europe 2 US Asia 1 Asia 2 "
I save the file to my PC, but when I try to run the file I get an error message saying that the .exe is not a valid Win32 application. Can anyone help? I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
Also, if I'm in the UK should I be selecting Europe 1 or Europe 2?
Finally, if I want to install .cab files to my phone where do I store the files and how do I open them?
Cheers
I can't say why the hotfix isn't working. You just run it from the PC and it works. Try downloading it again, in case it got corrupted during download.
As for cab files, I personally keep all my cab files so I can install them again after the next ROM update. I've got an "installers" folder on my storage card, with subfolders for different installer types (games, utils, htc fixes etc.) and I put them in there. You just run them directly on the phone by clicking them.
A word of advice - unless you REALLY want something installed on your phone, install it to the storage card. These babies run out of device space very quickly once you start installing stuff, and there's things out there that you don't have a choice about.
I only install things to the phone if the phone would function differently without it. eg. Theme modifications and essential utilities etc..
Hope you get the hotfix working. Most hotfixes run on the phone, so you won't normally have this issue. Oh yes, you should be selecting Europe for download location if you're in the UK. As far as I'm aware though, that's just the server location, so you pick the closest one. It won't affect what you download. That's determined by what region the site recognises you as.
Good luck
I've tried downloading it again but get the same error message. Should I be transfering the .exe file to the phone, and open it from the phone, or save it to the PC and open it on the PC? IF I should open it on the phone, where do I find the file once I've transfered it?
All the recent hotfixes, apart from the SIM contacts one, are local files that have to be run on the device.
Copy the file to the device then locate it using a file explorer. Simply press the file name with your finger to run it.

Once I've installed the hotfixes can I delete the .exe files from my phone?
You can, but they are relatively small so would you gain much?
Store them on the Storage Card (you can run then from there as well) so if you ever have to do a factory reset, you'll still have the update files to apply.

Good thinking
At the risk of seeming like a complete idiot, I wonder if I could pick your brains for some help.
I joined your forums when I bought my HTC HD2 a few weeks ago, (I had been a Nokia man for the last 20 years) and have spent the time perusing your excellent forums for information whilst learning the telephone out of the box, and now I have decided to expand my knowledge a little and start installing some simple .cab files.
I have tripped at the first hurdle!
I thought I'd start with something simple like the 'torch'
I created a folder on my computer specifically for downloaded cab files, and created the same on my HD2, downloaded the RAR file, unzipped it to my computer folder, then grabbed it and set it into the folder on the phone.
All good.
Now, when I use 'file explorer' to find the file, I can open it ok and when I click 'setup', the screen goes white with nothing but a small black box in the bottom right corner with what looks like a usb outline and an arrow above it.
If i click that, it looks like it's trying to take me to a website!
Now bejayus and begorrah, I'm not a stupid person, but I am an old dog trying to learn new tricks, so if anyone can help in laymans 'idiot proof' terms what I am doing wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.
Fantastic forum by the way, even though most of the information passes clean over the top of my head!
Well just so any other noob is/was in the same predicament as myself, the answer as expected was very simple.
DO NOT unzip the RAR file containing the .cab file on your computer when you download it and then send the unzipped folder to your phone.
Go to the location to where Firefox (or whoever) downloaded it on your computer, then copy and paste the intact RAR zip file direct to your phone and open it there.
I knew the answer would be simple, but thankfully the kind people in another forum pointed me in the right direction.
I know it's blatantly obvious to many members here, in fact, you probably laughed at such a stupid question in the first place...... but please keep in mind that not all of us are computer geeks.
I'm a hairy arsed construction worker myself, and merely trying to keep up with modern technology.
And I do love trying!
Hi,
My worst fears are realised on Monday. I receive a replacement handset as mine is faulty. Problem is my life is on my existing device. Sad but true!
Is there any sw available that will do a complete backup of the device including registry and so on? The bulk of my files are on SD so it is not too bad. I just want to be sure I don't miss anything.
Cheers.
I use Sprite Backup
http://www.spritesoftware.com/
Before I go and buy it does this also do the registry and phone settings etc?
Don't know about Sprite but SPB Backup will do what you want.

Thanks guys. Went for SPB as it was the cheaper option.
I assume all you need to do to restore is run the exe from your PC with the device connected to the PC with active sync?

Not quite. Once you have backed up your device I guess you will have to transfer that, and any other important data, to your PC.
The SPB Backup file is a self extracting one. All you need to do when you get your new device back is transfer the backup file onto your SD card, find it using Explorer, tap on it, tick whatever options you want installed and away you go.
WB
PS Make 2 copies of this backup file on different locations, perhaps one onto your PC, the other onto a memory stick, to ensure that you don't lose or damage the only copy you may have!
Thanks again. Running it the logs says the file is too big for a self extracting file. It then creates both a backup file and a restore file.
Would you happen to know what the difference is here? Do I need to run them both or will the exe source the restore file? Both the files are exe.
Hmmm, not come across that message in all the years I have been using SPB Backup.
What I would do is run the backup session again on the device while paying attention to the size of file it is about to create (work through the screens slowly and you will see what I am talking about).
Once the backup is finished see see if the file is roughly the same size as what it said it was just before the backup began. If it is then you are probably ok and you can use that backup file as a restore file when needed.
Hope this helps.

OK so there is a folder [ SELMA ] In my storage card , and when I want to delete it it says access denied and stuff.
I think it's a virus , or something and after connecting my moms phone [ HD ] she now also has this SELMA thing ..
Please give me a way to delete it.
do you mean after connecting your moms phone to your pc?
if so then id definitely be very worried.
whats in the folder?
I'm not sure , if it was there before or after I connected it to my laptop , but since I have it to on my HD2 , probably from my laptop , but when I search for the file on my laptop I can't find it.
And when I connect the phone to my laptop top and open my storage card , it doesn't show there :/
Once when I opened it it had 2 files , one something with Bajrami , I think.
Apparently Selma Bajrami is a singer.
Please help
Edit : Now when I open SELMA FILE it has nothing in it.
Wht don't you try to format your card?
lol Oo
copy ur files from sd card to ur pc.. then format the sd card and copy back
i think that should kill the folder ^.^
Haha , I don't know why I didn't think about that.
Thanks
Ok so a couple of days ago I formatted the storage card.
And ofcourse it got deleted.
But then after a while another folder comes up named SETISE
Again can't delete it , ignored it , then another file comes up called STOJAN in it an .exe file I think named KRISTAL deleted it then it came back again :/
When I open my storage card in reso explorer or the laptop , these files don't show up.
Can someone please help me.

I would say get a better virus scanner, that is typical of a virus, I would say your laptop is infested ...
if you don't want to buy a new AV goto someplace like http://www.avast.com they have a free one ...

Problem is , that virus may stop any new AV proggies from installing and working correctly ...
