Mac rooting - EVO Shift 4G General

Should the guide for mac permroot&recovery pretty much follow the same steps? I had no issues getting root on my fascinate and evo on my mac I'd just rather not take the risk bricking this phone. Thanks!

it's plenty easy if you install the SDK properly and follow the adb commands.

Should be pretty much the same steps just using terminal instead of cmd

[Q] I Have S-OFF, but root won't stick

I attempted to perform a perm root + S-OFF via BlackPrince' video.
Everything seemed to work like a charm. The only thing I did different was type 'sync' twice at the end of the terminal process. Didn't really think that would hurt.
Downloaded Rom Manager and attempted to flash ClockworkMod, but it gave me errors, said something about su not being found in the right place.
typed su into my phone terminal and got the 'access denied', which leads me of course to believe that my root isn't permanent.
I would love to use both the CM and Sense ROMs, but not sure if that's smart seeing as how the root isn't permanent.
One thing different from BPs video
I have searched all over these intraweb and found a bunch of topics with no definite solution for the G2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Use the gfree method from the wiki.

This. If you follow the instructions, it's almost fool proof.
Wiki says if you have S-OFF (I've checked and I still do): "Then you can use the psneuter procedure to get temp root at 1.72, and then follow that up with the usual methods to get permanent root from there."
I can get the # on the PC, but how do I then 'lock it in'? - I've spent a fair while looking round, but can't seem to find out.
I assumed I could go to the terminal emulator, but it was $.
[EDIT] Found it:

Thanks for the replies, people. I will definitely use the gfree method when I get home. Two questions though:
Is there a way I can run both sets of commands in terminal?
Can I still perm root while running CM6?

[Q] Nexus 4 CF-auto root issue(s)

Hello Everyone,
Just got my Nexus 4 the other day and have loved every minute spent with it. I'm trying to root it using the apparently fool-proof cf-auto root, but --despite apparent success-- have been having issues installing the fastboot drivers. Despite downloading and installing the appropriate drivers with the Nexus 4 toolkit, following all the instructions, troubleshooting a bit (switching from MTP to TPT USB mode to get those drivers as advised at the end of the toolkit instructions), I have had no luck at all with cf-auto root. The first step, where I think it says it will unlock the bootloader before the root, I get "The system cannot find the path specified." The phone is recognized and drivers have been automatically obtained from the internet exactly when they were supposed to be, according to the step by step instructions in the toolkit and the cf-auto root guide.
I really can't wait to get this thing rooted. Anyone have any idea as to what I can do? Also, what exactly do I need to uninstall/reset so that I can start the process from scratch in case that's necessary? Thanks so much everyone. Can't wait to have some actually fun questions to ask...

[Q] ADB Root without Root

According to this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45897011#post45897011
you can get ADB root without rooting your phone first. I want to install the modded wifi tethering app on my VZW G2 but don't want to root it if I don't have to (mainly just because of time constraints). I have searched how to do this, but all the instructions I find say you need to be rooted to use ADB Insecure/root. If it is possible to just get ADB root without rooting your phone, can someone point to detailed instructions?
Yes, look for the root thread and use the side load adb option. Next, buy that dev a beer.

[Q] [solved] superuser "permission denied"

I have carefully followed the instructions in the gfree method guide followed from the "Ultimate s=off" guide. I managed to install Visionary and to push the necessary files via ADB. Unfortunately I seem to get no results from running Visionary nor SuperUser. I wind up stuck at the step after "Run visionary to gain temp root". After running Visionary ( it says "attempting to root" and screen goes blank ) I try the next step and code "su" into the terminal and get "Permission Denied" error. I have been at this for two days and have searched like crazy for a solution before posting. FastBoot is turned off. USB Debugging is On. USB is unplugged for Visionary step. I did the downgrade step already, it is running 2.2.1 - Thank you for the help.
EDIT: Well my head hurts but I solved this problem. I uninstalled Android Terminal Emulator and installed JS Terminal instead. Now it gives me super user access # when I type "su"
EDIT 2: I now think that it might have more to do with just re installing apps in general after downgrading. Also, even after getting S=Off via gfree, I still had to run VISIONary "gain temporary root" in order to get superuser again so that I could install CWM and continue on. Speaking of VISIONary, only version 11 seemed to work! Thank you to all the helpful posters and whoever worked on the wiki! I am now running Dark Unicorn 2.5 and really enjoying the improvement over the older OS!

Did you downgrade to 2.2 first? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I did the downgrade. I also made sure my firewall is off in Windows when copying the files to the phone. I have tried different versions of the Visionary app. I have also tried different versions of SuperUser apps, although I know those are not a part of the basic guide. Basically I have been running in a circle making sure I have followed every step exactly in the gfree guide, but winding up with the Permission Denied result instead of SuperUser access

Possible to root when on 7.1.2?

I was updating my phone to try and match a tutorial, got up to the May security update (n2g47O) and found out the tutorial was for windows. I'm running Linux currently, so I can't use the fancy root toolkit.
Are there any decent tutorials that list which files to grab and where to grab them, as well as the step-by-step? I really like this phone, but I'd like to have more freedom with it. At the same time, I'm afraid of following ancient tutorials and bricking my phone. I have -some- experience with softmodding via hacking handhelds, but this is the first time I've messed around with a phone.
Thanks in advance for your help. I saw the suggested threads, but none of them seemed to directly answer my question.

I was reading through the guide, I just wasn't sure if it was compatible with 7.1.2's May build, or if I should update to the newest build, or what. It didn't look like it had been updated in a while.
If all I really have to do is follow the guide step by step, sorry for being dumb n wasting time.

You will be fine with the guide doesn't matter which firmware your flashing. He actually States the steps that won't apply to you being in newer Android version, and ones that do apply being on 7.1.2.

Thanks, but I don't think the steps are accurate for Linux. I tried the fastboot flashing unlock in Linux' terminal and it just lists a series of commands.

Try following one of the many guides for Linux on YouTube if you can't understand the guide completely. I sometimes struggle with worded guides so a video will probably help you out.

I'll scrounge around and see if I can find better guides. So far, I haven't uncovered one for Linux in 7.1.2. I'm hesitant to follow one for 7.0 because I have experience modding gaming consoles and if the version numbers don't match, bad things can go down.
I'm not familiar with doing phone stuff from Linux but if you know how to flash factory images them just grab the one that matches the tutorial and revert. Once you are rooted and where your want to be then upgrade through TWRP.

I knew I picked the perfect username. Downgrade->root->upgrade should have been my first thought.
Thank you, I'll give it a looksee!

Version of OS is irrelevant.
You need to fully set up the phone and enable developer options.
You then need fastboot and ADB for the OS you are using. (I use a Mac).
You will want to install TWRP and Magisk. Magisk will provide the root functionality and completely hide it so even AndroidPay will work.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
Good luck
I have found in my installation of Fedora linux that once the phone is in bootloader mode, you need to use
sudo ./fastboot flashing oem unlock
then to flash images
sudo ./fastboot flash boot boot.img
etc.
