Has anyone of you owners of DHD able to get the gps lock just incase you don't have internet connection for A-GPS to work. I had an iPhone 4 who will lock to GPS in few seconds even without a sim card and on dhd its impossible or will take very long to lock location without AGPS . IT'S THIS a problem or I am doing something wrong

I was recently out of my own country and data roaming was set to off. I never realised it at the time but everytime I tried to use GPS (Copilot Live) it took literally 20 mins to get a lock, apart from once and then I had access to wifi. Sounds like this was the problem

i usually get the lock well under a minute without any DATA connection like edge or wifi when i'm outdoors,
indoors it needs good 4-5 mins to get a lock.
Strange because iPhone 4 locks in minimum 7 seconds even without a simcard . That's means that DHD is using a cheap GPS receiver which will become unusable without data connection.

There is something called "Hotfix".
If you have previously locked on a GPS signal, it will be faster to lock for the 2nd time.
BUT, if you started from a "coldfix" (means if you try to lock for the first time or quite some time after the 1st lock or far away from the location of your first lock), it could take minutes to lock.
However, I have to admit that DHD tends to have a slower lock...
Correct me if I'm wrong.
A-GPS dosent need a web connection, it uses the internet once a week to download the latest sat data to make gps lock quicker..... you can use apps like gps toolbox to download the latest A-GPS data.

Doesn't the DHD download the A-GPS data automatically in the background?

No you need an app to download the data, maybe some apps can be set to auto download the data though
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Then what app is the best? It only needs to be able to download the A-GPS data, nothing else.

Search for gps toolbox in the market, there is a free and paid version, both let you download the latest sat data

I checked while reading this topic and my DHD got a lock within one minute of GPS (satellite only) being turned on. I had the phone in airplane mode before I turned it on so it was in effect a cold lock. I'm indoor at night so there's no direct line of sight either. Quite fast in my opinion.
I get gps lock within 3 to 10 secs with or without wifi, data. I have installed open gps tracker and first I ran it for 30 mins.
I don't know if that app is helping in gps lock.

IPhone 4 locks in 7 seconds without a sim. You will never be able to geotag your photos in any android phone cause most of them have cheap and lousy GPS which relies on AGPS data for lock. Geotag will work best on iPhone if you give AGPS option to iPhone it works instantly

I mean you didnt even know what A-GPS was you thought it required a constant gprs connection while navigating lol

Yes it does require a constant gprs connections you fool. Google yourself for details or create a post for replies

AGPS is only used to locate the sats, you fool lol it downloads a file with the latest sat positions, so you device knows where to look speeding up sat lock lol no wonder you love the iphone, you have about as much processing power as one

Hi,
On my tab, the gps lock in Google maps or any other maps seems kinda slow when compared to that of my HD2 running WM6.5...also, it seems to lose the gps connection quite often when driving around and then takes a lot of time to lock back in.
Anyone else noticed this? And any way of improving the gps lock? A nudge in the right direction would be really helpful.
Thanks

I thought my DroidX was slow. It now seems fast compared to the tab.
Sent from Samsung Galaxy Tab
My hd2 is faster then my tab too but my tab is fast enough and dont loose signal
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I did a direct comparison of the Tab versus my Nexus 1, without fail the N1 would find more satellites, and find them faster, than the Tab does. Seems odd as I would've thought the Tab would have a larger antenna for such things.
Data on / wifi on? A-GPS and GPS or just GPS.
Makes a big difference on mine for sat-fix time.
I find the lock on my Tab QUITE fast... usually within 10 seconds. I even get locks inside my home sometimes (allbeit weak)
When Im using it as a gps unit in my car it more or less locks on by the time the route is finished calculating in Navigator.
Mine takes its time to get the satellites but once is done it works like a charm. Unlike my galaxy s wich get the satellites very fast but looses signal very often and has no precision at all.

Are you all using jm6 or jma sine you started to have slow GPS lock time?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
mine locks with 10 satellites in less than 15 secs inside house. JM6
@vs2 - tried with both gps and data on...
@clubtech - am in India and the latest firmware update released for my region is JK3 (which I updated yesterday)...does that make a difference?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
@spirit - I get a lock of 4-7 satelites outside in non-obstructed space at Max...that too drops down quickly to 3/4...

Anyone else use this, I find that after about 20 minutes of driving it looses signal..
If I reboot the phone it'll find signal again..
Yeah, experiment same matter here. Pretty annoying that is.

No, I regularly use the navigation and have driven for 45+ minnutes without losing signal
Seems to be working ok now since using the newer hd4 betas..

Ok, this was weird ...
SGS does not need A-GPS to work its an add on for areas where the sky/GPS signal may not be in full view .Therefore better GPS unit than IPhone where wek signal exists .

samsung will lock without agps but it will take minutes to lock on. i need the gps to work likes it used to work on iphone 4.. maximum 8 seconds to lock even without a sim card which gives triangular location

Use agps then? That's how your iPhone gets such a quick lock, and galaxy s ii gets one in similar time with agps activated.

Hey guys. Really really love my new n7 its amazing.
Of course the moment I got it home I rooted it and installed a few roms! You just have to!
I'm currently on paranoid android 2.23 with no kernel change.
My issue is this: my GPS won't lock at all! Google maps with GPS enabled without wifi always returns location unavailable.
I'm almost 100% sure the nexus has GPS so what's the problem?
Anyone having this issue or any solutions?

I can second that, it runs perfectly. Try a clean install.
Try GPS Status from the market and go to tools and erase the location assistant data then download assistance. Also GPS Status also shows you if you are picking up satellites and just not getting a lock. If you get even one lock just be patient and you will get the other ones you need eventually.
Your first lock in awhile is going to take longer because the GPS logic assumes you have changed locations and does a cold start up.
Give it some help and go outside with at least a decent look at the sky keep it in one place.
I haven't had top do this in a long time but sometimes if I had toggled GPS from on to off I wouldn't get a lock but rebooting with GPS toggled on would fix it.
And a few times reflashing the same kernel would fix a flakey GPS

GPS status is pretty good app! Thank you for suggesting it.
GPS status showed 9 sat and 9 locks, but maps didn't work still.
I then did the reset and download and now maps locks me and shows location.
Thank you!
This might be a little off topic but what exactly does the assistant data do?

I'm not getting great gps accuracy with this phone. Usually between 16-30 feet. My other devices are accurate up to 3 feet. I'm wondering what everyone else is getting with this phone. Using GPS status from the play store.
I just tested. I'm getting 10-12 feet.

I noticed that when I am using a map program like Waze or google Maps, the gps signal gets lost more often than when I had the Note 3.

That's GPS Test /GPS Test +(paid). Great app.
I've noticed this as well when playing the game ingress. I wonder if it's due to the steel frame? My Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S5 was spot on.
Hmm.
Never thought about that.
My GPS does seem to perform better now that I have FireKat ROM on my phone.
Re tested.
Rooted running Firekat ROM and using some tweaks from the lag thread. GPS assist is running in the background.

I too tested it on FireKat and got the same results. 10 ft. Makes me think it can be enhanced by a software update. Maybe in a future patch.

Depends on your location and how many satellites are in sight but ~3 meters/~9 feet is about as good as it's going to get with just GPS. Maybe if phone locks into some Glonass satellites it could do a bit better.

I made a change on the WiFi settings and my GPS signal improved. I put a check on "Always Allow Scanning." Because I remembered that I had taken it off to try another app and that was around the time that GPS stopped working correctly.
go to Settings>Wi-Fi>Advanced>Always Allow Scanning; Put a check on this option.
Google maps says GPS signal lost a lot with the note 4... doesn't seem very good at getting a location.
Definitely love the phone. Came from the s4. My first note. Thought I was the only one that noticed crappy GPS signal

I checked the scanning off because when driving using the maps WiFi spots pop up and I can't see where I'm going. LoL
To all those who saying they don't have issues with the GPS they probably don't use it enough to see that.
