[Q] New to Rooting, read guides, still need help :( - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hello all.
I have an original MyTouch 3G with NO headphone jack. I just got it off eBay and it is running 2.2, with an update notification to update to 2.2.1 which i HAVE NOT yet done.
I have read through multiple rooting guides for this phone, but as someone who has never used those programs and never rooted it is still confusing.
This is what my fastboot screen says:
Sapphire PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT - 1.33.0013 (SAPP30000)
CPLD-10
RADIO- 2.22.27.08
Main thing I want to do is root the phone so I can set the CPU to underclock for battery savings and overclock when in use to the highest stable speed (high 500's?). The phone can't run a game to save it's life right now on stock 2.2 (OTA T-Mobile).
Questions:
1.) Do I need to flash a new ROM to Overclock?
2.) If I do, how does CM 6.1 Stable work for this phone? One big guide says to use 5.08 but I wanted a froyo build (or ideally GB, but I doubt that exists for this phone).
3.) I have yet to understand what a kernel is, which one I would want, and at what point in the process you actually do anything with the kernel file.
Consideration: The phone I received was already activated I guess, considering the first thing I needed to do what put it my SIM and log into google. I was able to do this over WIFI, ***I do NOT have a data plan, nor will I buy one*** Please keep that in mind when responding.
Please help out a new guy. I would love to understand these things so I can someday pay it forward and help someone new like I once was.

Questions: and answers
1.) Do I need to flash a new ROM to Overclock?
not necessarily but yes you do so u can chage your kernal to over clock
2.) If I do, how does CM 6.1 Stable work for this phone? One big guide says to use 5.08 but I wanted a froyo build (or ideally GB, but I doubt that exists for this phone).
its very great im using cm6.1 now
3.) I have yet to understand what a kernel is, which one I would want, and at what point in the process you actually do anything with the kernel file.
it's the lowest level of software before hardware. It's the portion of the OS that handles drivers and hardware control and access for the rest of the OS.

I got him taken care of last week, but thanks for the input, but you don't need a new ROM to overclock, just a new kernel.

OK so I've been doing my research and figured out what I wanted to flash my Magic with. Before I get into that though, for reference - here is my version info:

Now, I am planning to use the following recovery:
[Recovery] [32A & 32B] [08-Dec-2009] RA-sapphire-v1.5.1
And flash the following rom:
[ROM][32A][Nov07] MyHero 2.0.5 with Official SenceUI on HTC Kernel 2.6.27
As far as I can tell I won't need to install a different SPL?
These are the steps I am planning to take:
Backup all my apps and APN details
Use fastboot to boot the recovery rom
Make a backup of my current rom
Wipe data
Copy new rom to SD and flash it
This list seems almost too simple though, I feel like I am forgetting something.. can anyone with more experience than me (I am a complete rookie) please check this and let me know if I'm missing something?
Also, any hints and/or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Come on... anyone?
Of the 78 views is there really no one with any input? Really I'm just looking for some simple feedback.. if all I said seems correct to you, please let me know. I am holding off flashing my phone for the first time to be sure that I got all the details right.
Thanks so much for who ever takes their time to respond.
Looks OK for me.
The only thing i can't remember when a exactly i copied the update.zip file.
For the rest, it's ok. No need the SPL. I've got the same rom.
You can go for it, the procedure you describe is OK. Too simple? Sure it is but who said it wasn't?
My only advice would be to prefer Magic GyD over MyHero but it's a matter of taste, I guess (also Redglasses seems to have left the building while GyD is still active... we can therefore still get answers to our questions and even bugfixes if needed)
Happy flashing and as said before there's no real need to change your SPL yet, both mentioned ROMs will flash and work fine using this one.
Thanks for your replies guys, I flashed it yesterday and everything worked fine
swissp, any convincing reasons to switch to "GyD" ? I assume it also runs Android 1.5?
Yes, all fully working SenseUI ROMs run on 1.5
I have no really convincing reason to tell you to switch but I'm using Magic GyD because I feel, after trying MyHero, CaSense and GyD, that it's the "closest to bugfree" custom SenseUI ROM available for 32A. The devs will probably stop there because 2.0 is coming and these ROMs will keep their pros and cons. It's unlikely that MyHero 2.xx will ever get its Market bug fixed, for example. Case also said he will probably not develop his ROM further.
I really hope they can get the camera working with 2.0 soon because that's the only reason I'm staying away from it at the moment.
I gotta say, I've been using MyHero for a full day now and I haven't run into a single bug yet. I do have to terminate all background apps once I start to run +/- 5 or more but that's not a big deal imo.
My only complaint is that it isn't runnin on 1.6

[HTC Magic 32A] Different rooting methods are NOT working

Background
I bought my HTC Magic in Singapore (through SingTel) about 6 months ago. About a month ago I used the HTC software ROM update to update my HTC Android 1.5 to HTC Sense UI 1.5 (NB: the android firmware version remained the same but I am now using HTCs Sense UI).
I finally decided to root yesterday and since then the problems have begun!
Just so things were "clean" I restored my phone to factory settings. However, I cannot figure out how to go back to the stock 1.5 (ie. the one that DOES NOT use Sense UI). So, now I am on a basic (without any modifications) version of Sense UI.
One-Click Method
I then tried this to root my phone with the 1-click method
When I click on “Backup recovery image” I got the “Failed” message. So, I clicked on the hidden asterix and tried to flash the image but I got the same message again. Essentially, this did not work for me. I posted on the comment thread (just yesterday) but have not gotten a response on it yet.
Method on XDA Forum
Then I looked around and found this more "complicated" method and found an HTC Sapphire Hacking wiki post which seemed easy enough to follow.
I generally use linux but just to be sure I followed the guide to the letter I booted up XP.
Everything worked fine until I got to this command: C:\AndroidSDK> fastboot boot recovery-rom.img
I got the following error message: fastboot failed, remote: not allow
Solutions?
I have looked all over this forum and a few others and have found this can be because of the "perfected SPL", however, as far as I know my SPL is 1.76.0007 and NOT the 1.33 "problem" SPLs.
I have NO idea what I should do now. I really want to root my phone but I am completely stuck as the simple method does not work, nor does the "complex" method
Any help on this matter would be very much appreciated
HTC Magic 32A
The same issues with me, i am currently stuck with the Sense UI with no way to root my magic and i have tried everything possible.
If you find a solution please do let me know
Is yours singtel? I think the updated Sense UI rom may have blocked it. I can't find a way of getting back to the stock rom.
I am not sure if it is singtel, but when I first got it before installing the sense rom, the boot screen says AirTel. I am not sure if this is the same but that's what I see.
There is nothing wrong with the Sense UI rom but I just need to have root.
Anyway I will keep looking for solution because I am sure that one of these developers will eventually find a way to root but till then I might just get the nexus one. From what am hearing and reading the phone is pretty simple to unlock and root.
Don't really want to buy a new phone just to root!
Airtel may be from India
Yeh, I think it is from there because I few forums I have visited mentioned India.
Well am not only getting the nexus one for the root capabilities, is just that the performance of the phone is amazing and I am a loyal fan/customer to HTC and Android and I cant wait to have one of that bad boy for myself.
perfected spl me thinks
Do you think? But, I thought it was only certain 1.33 builds?
Can no-one help with rooting my phone?
I have the weekend and I'd be willing to try something complicated.
Actually Singtel has given 12gb free data per month which means that wifi tethering is a really reasonable option and I want to set this up. Hence, I would really like the ability to root my phone.
There's (as for now) no way to root that SPL.
yeah same here,im also from singapore and having problems rooting.
could one of you technology gurus help us out?
seems like a waste if we cant root this phone =(
Wouldn't say it's a waste haha. But, I would like to use 1.6 (and then later 2.1) and also perhaps use tethering and other cool features!

If you want a different rom, dont follow the last 2 links, and find whatever you want to flash, after the first 2 links you will have a non-perfected spl and be able to flash whatever your heart desires.
There are easier ways to do this if you are not running windows 7. Apparently theres a way using htc sync, but i cant get it working, even with all of the fixes that people have claimed work for them

Im sort of new to android and dont really know much about these things but I want to upgrade my phone from crappy 1.5 to like Eclair or Sense UI or anything other than 1.5 (I hate it)

Yes, you can root your phone. Try to include detailed information about your phone so people can give you specific information regarding your phone and even give you some links.
For example, use a signature such as:
Sapphire HTC Magic 32A
RADIO-3.22.20.17
ROM-CyanogenMod 4.2.13
RECOVERY-Amon RA v1.5.2H
THEME-n/a
LOCK SCREEN-default
SD CARD-8GB 512mb:EXT3 / 32mb LinuxSwap / Remainder Fat32
Okay thnx, so can u tell me any roms for the htc magic that are safe
All are safe. How exactly did you brick you're Dream...?
I flashed a htc hero rom and then i couldnt turn it on anymore or go to recovery, but I have another question do I need a special SPL to be able to flash roms or is any fine
Sense Ui for Rogers Magic
Hello Everyone,
Well since you want to know when your Magic will get the sense ui or hasn't gotten it yet is that they still are working on it. Check this link out: http://simflecks.com/?tag=rogers
The post is quite recent and even right now they still are going to release it. Things got delayed to the device problem of 911 not working with gps feature on.
Hmm.. this topic somehow doesn't seem to belong in the "Themes & Wallpapers" forum.
Better go to the General forum, or if you want support for a specific upgrade/rom you can go here and post in the desired update/rom thread.
Now, since you posted your question: if you want SenseUI running on 2.1 you'll have to wait a bit because the source or rom image is not available yet. There are some experimental roms available, but I doubt they are for everyday use (some things are still not working). You can however run vanilla 1.6 if you want a higher and stable Android version, but it won't come with SenseUI. Vanilla Eclair is also an option, but currently not as stable as 1.6 (same reason, no 2.1 source/rom image/drivers made available yet), but they are getting there.
u can have a sense ui running on 1.5, if you are only concerned with how it looks. Just flash the cursorsence rom, if u have 32a phone. ensure u dont have a perfect spl. If you did the rogers dream->magic switch, likely you have a 32a phone with 1.33.0010 perfect spl. you must get rid of this first.

Agreed. Moved to General.

Rom question.

Hey there. I've ordered an htc magic, and since it has a 288mb memory, i suppose it's the 32A version (we'll see when it gets here though).
I basically want to turn my magic into the HTC Hero (well the UI at least..) I've spent most of my day today reading about how to flash roms, which ones offer this or that, what the problems are and so on. After about 10 hours of reading, i came across this:
htc.com/hk-en/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=765&news_id=355
on the HTC webpage (EDIT: please add "w w w." in front of the text as the forum won't let me insert a link)
And my first question is... What's the difference between that official rom and, say, the CursorSense32A-1.2.6.1 ROM - which i take is the most popular around here.
Just use Cursor's ROM. You won't regret it.
I'm sure it must be better. I just wanted to know basic differences...
Is CursorSense using Android 2.1 or the normal 1.5?
Cursor is using the 1.5 with SenseUI interface. If you really want the 2.1 i would recommend you check Super-Hero from ahmgsk also with SenseUI.
2.1 is most likely unstable. It's ok but I personally prefer stability. Just grab cursorsense and you basically have yourself the hero, but be careful flashing radio and spl.

That was my main concern about the cursorsense and that's why i was looking for the official HTC Sense UI update. I still don't know what their difference is and what more does cursorsense offer.
I am a computer engineer, so it SHOULDN'T be that big of a deal to flash some firmware on a cell phone, i just have a lot of reading to do, which is not all in one place in a form of a tutorial or something.
If anyone has some useful links to provide, you'd save my day. Thanks a mil once again.
give us the fastboot details on your phone and I'm sure someone (including myself) can help you in the process. Just follow instructions and you should be fine but we'll guide if necessary. Lastly, is that 32A the one with the headphone jack? (If it is, I can't help you too much lol, I can point you places but that's it)

Not to be rude but this link was on the CursorSense thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=605239
Just follow it step by step. It doesn't take a Computer Engineer to figure it out, by the way it's written and explained.
Also, the official update flashes your radio to the 6.35 radio, so I'll say it again, just go with cursor's ROM you won't regret it.
It's fast, it has no carrier branding, it's fast, it's stable and did I mention it's fast?
I advice you against using an official rom. specially if you want to make modifications/root/hack your phone. those official roms usually fix bugs that are needed for hacky things to be done, such as gaining root.
My phone has not arrived yet so i cannot provide any more information as of now.

Okay so here is a biggie that i need help for.
I am looking into buying a used HTC Magic (32A) that is in mint condition. The seller told me, after i asked him if i can use an unofficial rom on his, that he has flashed an official rom on it and is unsure if i will be able to flash modified ROMs.
He shall provide me the SPL and Radio versions tomorrow, as well as the ROM version he is using.
What do you think i should do? In case the SPL is perfected (which i suppose is what devbro meant) is there any way to revert back to an engineering SPL and Radio (i am looking into using Cursor's ROM).
Thanks guys. And i shall be providing the Info as soon as i get it so you can help me decide.
It's called a 'perfect' SPL for a reason. Just get the Radio and SPL and post it up, we'll be able to tell at that point if it is flashable.
So here are the information guys. Please let me know if the phone is flashable:

Nope, that indeed is the perfect spl. It has not been successfully flashed yet.
So what would you do? Get another phone with a non perfected SPL, or get that one in hope that someone will find a workaround and maybe a wait for an official 2.1 eclair android update for htc magic (although i doubt it tbh).
how bad is the official htc sense ui compared to cursorsense's?
Myself, I bought a 2nd Magic, so I have 2 rootable phones.
As for the comparison between official HTC releases and Cursor....I have no idea as I've only used cooked ROM's. Both of my phones came pre-rooted, so I never had the pleasure of a stock ROM. LoL
The official 2.1 should be here in the next few months (as late as June), if you can wait, else you will need to drop the $529US+++ on a Nexus 1.
I wish i had the money for a nexus.. but i don't.
This guy is selling his HTC magic for quite cheap (200 dollars) that is seriously in mint condition (but unflashable) and i was very interested. What i really want is a phone that will be able to get the 2.1 android. HTC might not release it officially for the magic, that's what concerns me, and i was thinking if they don't i would be able to flash it myself via a custom rom.
Well then definately wait until you find one with a flashable HBOOT.
With so many people buying N1's there will be Magic's up for sale. I paid $200CND for my 2nd magic, from a local guy who bought a N1. My first magic I traded my HTC Dream for, not sure what the girl was thinking, but she didn't want the Magic and I was more then happy to trade. LoL
Well i am also thinking of getting the hero and get it over with. the hero will deffo get the 2.1 eclair.. What do you think?
I've never even seen a Hero, let alone used one.

Is flashing a custom rom a good deal ?

Hey there,
im pretty happy with my phone, but sometime i feel like its some kinda bad to get apps for evey setting that htc did not provide in 2.2 (2.2.1 not available to me yet). Although i think enough "****" is running systemwise that noone needs.
So flashing to a custom rom seems to be an pretty easy thing if you
do it carefully and check all potential failure actions.
Will custom roms make the phone faster ?
To all that flashed yet: Do you regret it or is it like the best thing you can do ?
Do i lose any important functions of my phone ? Are the roms stable and working good actually ?
Thanks !

Having been running Custom Roms since I had my HTC Magic, I would heartly recommend them to most users, It's all about what you want from your phone though. If you are unhappy with all the bloatware installed and dislike sense it's an ideal way to streamline functionality, your DHD will, in most cases , run smoother than stock and should have at least comparable battery life. Currently I am running CM7 which gives me a stable gingerbread based rom, with a decent custom rom there should be no loss of functionality (even the FM radio works these days).
Custom ROMs are by and large an excellent way to keep your phone up to date whilst taking advantage of new features.
There is a risk of introducing new issues, but the support you get is a million times better than you'd get from the manufacturer, and new updates are usually a couple of times a week rather than a couple of times a year.
The main risk, I find (at least from my Windows Mobile days) is that some ROM developers tend to let things run away from them a bit and end up sandwiching so many new features and launchers and eye candy etc that it ends up slowing the phone down more than the stock ROM did.
So far I've not seen anything like that on recent Android devices, but with older handsets like the Hero there are some custom ROMs that are noticably slower than stock.
As long as you realise that there is a performance limit on your handset that will eventually be breached, then you will have a happy experience with custom ROMs.
Sounds promising. Really.
Im just irritated with the instructions.
My Desire HD is yet rooted.
But there is nothing about S-OFF or Radio OFF mentioned.
I remember most instructions with S-OFF and then Rom Manager or something.
But in this case - Whats the "Wipe" ? Normally means all stuff gets removed ?
Im missing detailled information, especially how installing the rom (via app ?)
and which version i need of my desire hd and more :/
Is this the safest way to flash it ?
And waht the hell means "vendor = ace" ?
Which vendor i "got" ? Im irritated or maybe i translate things bad from eng into ger
ps: guess i got it. htc ace was/is the codename for the desire hd device.

In my experience, the easiest way to get ENG S-OFF and Radio S-OFF would be to use jkoljo's excelent tools for S-OFF and Radio S-OFF. Here's a guide to flashing a new radio after you have done Radio S-OFF.
In the Radio S-OFF topic, there's also a small guide for flashing a new rom. If you need a more detailed one, you can find one here.
The next step is to find the rom that suits you the most, for example Android Revolution HD or LeeDroid. Download the ROM you like the most, then follow the aforementioned guide to flash it.
When you go from one rom to another, it's always reccomended to do a full wipe (unless it's just a rom update, then you don't always have to do it). In this case, it means that all your data and settings will be lost, except for the stuff you have on your SD card. You can use your Google-account to back up your apps and contacts and stuff, so do that if you feel you need it.
Hope this helps.
Other handy tools for data backup before migrating to a new rom are MyBackup Pro and of course, Titanium Backup.
Don't forget that contacts, market apps, and wi-fi passwords are synced to your google account by default, so no need for huge app backup files unless you have several apks from other sources..
The guides about S-OFF and Radio flashing posted above are detailed and relatively easy for anyone willing to experiment.
Just make sure that you check the instructions carefully, and double-check whatever you type in adb. The few minutes of making sure you're following instructions to the letter can save you hours of un-needed trouble and aggravation..
Also take note, different custom ROMs often recommend specific radios for maximum compatibility. This can make a significant difference in battery and wireless performance, specially with power hungry devices such as ours.
And above all, try different roms, see what you like best. Running the bleeding edge in Android can be as fun as it can be frustrating, so try to find the best suit for your phone and you, and enjoy it
So alright - I think i got it:
1. Root Device (Visionary)
2. Radio S-Off (Tool)
3. Radio Off (Tool)
4. Download a Radio.img (How can i find out which works best with the crom i want ?)
5. Use radio tool and reboot
6. Find a suitable custom rom
7. install and voila - there we go
Some questions that came up:
- Whats the "best" radio out there ? Is this as important as picking a good C-Rom ?
- HTC Sync preinstalls only means that i got it on my PC already, right ?
- And can all of those steps (except root) kill my device (=brick) or am i safe at the moment when Radio S-OFF and Eng S-OFF worked properly ?
- Nowhere is something about the VERSION i need ? So will a Desire HD 2.1, 2.2, 2.2.1 and 2.3 work with all the STEPS ?
Which custom rom is the best for me ? How can i compare all roms out ?
I only heard bout Android Rev HD, LeedDroid and CYMOD.
I want speed and i want a nice User Interface (but i guess i can reach that with ADW.Launcher.EX or Launch-Pro no matter how the Rom looks ?)
Thanks guys for all the answers already !
Would be so thankful if you can finish this with me.
PS: If i "brick" my device is there 100% no chance to unbrick it ?
Was possible with psp 2000 e.g. after some months. think so with desire hd too ?
1. In most cases, the developer of any given rom will reccomend a spesific radio to use with his/hers rom (like with LeeDroid or ARHD). Usually I'd just go for that radio, but as with so many other things in life, your mileage with a spesific radio may vary. While one user might report good signal strength and battery with one radio, another user might say the complete opposite. Anyway, stick to the radio reccomended by the ROM developer. I think that's the safest to do.
2. I've not even used HTC Sync since I bought my Desire HD, and I don't see the need to use it.
3. You're never 100% safe, but in my experience, once you're past the ENG/Radio S-OFF and your new radio is flashed, it's usually smooth sailing from there. But always remember that **** can happen, and you might be unlucky, so if you're unsure of something, read up on the subject as many times as you need for you to feel comfortable doing it.
4. As for what rom is best, that's really up to you I think. I've stuck to ARHD, and I find it fantastic, but you might like LeeDroid or CM7 better. Just look at screen shots, and try to figure out which one is most suited for you. And as you said, with AWD or LauncherPro, and the right wallpaper, any ROM can look beautiful
5. If your device is bricked, I don't know of any method of getting it back to life. All I can think of is send it to HTC, claim that it's dead, and hope for the best.
I flashed my first ROM yesterday just (leedroid 2.2.2). I havent really had much of a chance to explore the real benefits of it, but im already delighted that i did it. Just by being able to add custom themes, fonts and skins to get the phone looking much brighter and colourful. Also nice playing with overclocking the processor.
Took a bit of work to downgrade the software to get root, then a few problems getting s-off etc, but in the end it was all a good learning experience. Certainly dont regret doing it, just sort of regret that i put it off for so long. Looking forward to much playing about with different ROMS and customising them.
Just make sure you read the threads on here about rooting very carefully. And also read very carefull the instructions that come with each ROM. Leedroid recommended a radio that works best with his ROM, so i flashed that. Dont know if others do the same as i havent got round to trying any others yet.
Am i right that only with Radio S-OFF i will be also able to install custom roms,
but NO new radio versions ? Is the problem the compability (with croms) or is there any other reason for new radios than better connection/battery ?
Which users are fine with only Radio S-OFF ?
As i can read, RSPOFF is safer than ENGSOFF.
Also: the question about the VERSION is really making me moving.
Hope someone can explain me, why nowhere is mentioned something about it.
I remember 2.2.1 cant be rooted and 2.3 - so is this the explaination
(cause you cant go over step 1) ? or whats the point ?

1. Root Device (Visionary)
2. Radio S-Off (Tool)
3. Radio Off (Tool)
4. Download a Radio.img (How can i find out which works best with the crom i want ?)
5. Use radio tool and reboot
6. Find a suitable custom rom
7. install and voila - there we go

Once you've done Radio S-OFF (not sure what your step 3 is - seems the same as 2) then I'd recommend installing ROM Manager from the Market and ensuring you have either ClockWorkMod 2.5.1.3 (up to Android 2.2) or 3.0.0.6 (android 2.3) installed. This then allows you do do all your Nandroid backups and System wipes that you will need to before you flash a new ROM.
- Whats the "best" radio out there ? Is this as important as picking a good C-Rom ?

As said, there is technically no "Best" radio - but the dev of a ROM will recommend a decent compatible ROM. You are welcome to try others but you may notice weaker signal or degraded battery life.
- HTC Sync preinstalls only means that i got it on my PC already, right ?

It's useful for getting the right drivers on your computer - but probably not much else!
- And can all of those steps (except root) kill my device (=brick) or am i safe at the moment when Radio S-OFF and Eng S-OFF worked properly ?

Not "Safe" but at least much more likely to be able to recover. You can still permanently damage it - but doing so would be pretty hard work!

Generally the steps are the same throughout...though you'd be hard-pressed to find a DHD ROM on 2.1!

Read their respective threads and see what you like and don't like. That's what everyone else does. No ROM is "better" than the other.

Depends how badly bricked it is! (see above)
To add the misstying under 2. or 3.
I meant:
2. Radio S-oFF
3. ENG S-Off.
What is ENG S-OFF in some easy words doing other than Radio ?
As i understood - without ENG S-oFF i cant install custom radio images, right ?
Means: New Roms, but maybe not the best compatible radios ?
Also: When installed Clockwork i can backup everything ?
Means a NANDROID backup i guess ?
I thought when i want to get back, i just need this Ruu Rom and
Set all Tools to S-ON ? So this Nandroid backup, whats that ? "Ruu" is the original rom and the "nandroid backup" is the system-backup/firmware/original radio.img?
Im just ab it irritated with all the words like rom, radio, firmware :/
Im so thankful for all the answers yet.
Never expected such useful answers, most forums full of guys that link
to other threads and do not really care. so until now - great work !

ENG S-OFF will allow you to flash rom's, Radio s-OFF will allow you to flash radio's as well (ENG S-off fools h-boot into believing it has radio s-off)
Radio S-OFF will not be reverted by flashing a new h-boot unlike ENG S-OFF.
Different rom's suit different people, seen as you are going to loose all your data falshing a custom rom, i would recommend flashing a couple and having a play around (leedroid and Coredroid etc have sense if that rock's your boat, Cyanogenmod is closer to vanilla android) as everyone has a different preference.
The Versioning of ROM's is a bit of a grey area all ROM's are based on an android release 2.1, 2.2.1, or even 2.3 etc but many have features ported to them from other release i.e stuff from 2.3 or even 2.4 may be present in a 2.1 based ROM so look for a rom with the features you desire rather than relying on the base. But some ROM's require different instructions for flashing i.e Gingerbread ROM's require clockwork recovery version 3.x this is due to different file systems used, to be safe make sure to read the first couple of entries in the ROM thread in the development section before flashing as it will list any special requirements or steps that need taking prior to flashing.

Maybe im just reading it wrong, but do you mean that Radio S-OFF has all the features that ENG S-OFF brings PLUS the radio flash option ?
Then why all the instructions say, i need both (ENG and Radio) ?
Generelly, you recommend only ENG S-OFF or will the most good Custom Roms not work that good with the original radio version from htc ?
And Gingerbread Roms need Clockwork 3.X - But Clockwork 3.X needs Desire HD with 2.3, as i got told above.
And i cant upgrad to this by using HTC Updater. I guess, i have to manually upgrade my original Firmware then, right ?
Complete guide in my sig (check out the dev forums, lots of them out there)
Radio s-off and eng s-off are 2 different things and you need both if you want to be able to flash a rom.
And yes, I love my custom rom more than I will ever love stock. Why? because it looks like the stock one but it's lightning fast and drains less battery. Oh, and I have better reception

Gingerbread roms need 3.X, but you don't need Gingerbread to install it. I have CWM 3.0.0.6 but am on a FroYo ROM. All down to my own personal choice!
Also, yes. a Nandroid backup is an exact copy of your ROM (not your radio). So all apps, settings etc will be exactly the same when you restore it. You can't do this without a clockworkmod recovery.
ROM Manager interfaces with CWM and allows you better management of your backups and also gives you an easy way to upgrade your recovery without having to mess around in a terminal emulator or command window.
The relationship between Kernel, Radio (Baseband) and a custom ROM? So in theory, can you mix and match different version and combination, but there seems to be proven combination that works better, is that correct?
Base on what I am reading, they are can contribute to a faster, more stable, and a more battery efficient phone system.

Nice Guide. Has everything i need.
Why i need both ?
In case i dont need/want a new radio version and ONLY a new crom,
i dont need the Radio S-OFF. Cause you say i need both ? Why ?
Maybe gimme a short answer to that.
Will be thankful !
