Just as we lay to rest the ghost of a phantom Tegra 2 chip inside the LG Revolution, here comes the specter of another unconfirmed appearance for NVIDIA's dual-core application processor, this time inside Samsung's Galaxy S II. If you'll recall, we were initially informed by Samsung's PR crew that their new Android flagship would run on NVIDIA's hardware, however a subsequent correction informed us that the processor inside would in fact be Samsung's own Exynos. Now, it turns out, both might be true. AnandTech have come across some benchmark results showing a GT-i9103 with Tegra 2 listed as its grunt provider, while Pocket-lint and others have noted that Samsung's own spec sheet for the Galaxy S II states that the dual-core Exynos "may not be applicable in some regions." The likeliest scenario here is that Samsung hasn't yet reached sufficient volumes with its own processor production and will rely on NVIDIA's Tegra 2 for handsets outside its critical markets -- much in the same vein as it replaced Super AMOLED with Super Clear LCD screens in Russia and some other territories. Don't fret too much, though, performance disparities between the two aren't likely to be overly significant.

How annoying will it be to develop custom roms for the upcoming Galaxy S II.
All I want is a non-keyboard rocking 4g LTE/WIMAX Galaxy S2 Variant for Sprint, it's either that or I buy the Galaxy S II and stay with the expensive deathstar (ATT)!

there has been conflicting reports
but my understanding is that is doesn't have a tegra 2
but has a dual core version of samsungs own hummingbird.
Well the hummingbird processors aren't bad...I said I wouldnt b buying another sammy phone but if the phone ends up looking like the "leaked" photo then I will have to buy it...super amoled 4.3 inch screen eill b yummy

i really hope this turns out to be false! it will mess the updates and custom roms
If its true, which one would be better ?
for sure samsung will use tegra 2 in i9103 for some countries
from everything ive seen tegra2 is better.. sigh i want tegra2 with samoled+ screen, tegra2 has better graphics and better java and flash rendering.. which honestly is all that matters, since nothing is delayed on the galaxy s1 right now except the internet..
I did read a post (I think it was on engadget) that said, the Samsung galaxy s 2s that have a tegra 2 CPU will also have a LCD screen and not a amoled.

Anandtech did some benchmark testing in Barcelona.
http://www.anandtech.com/Show/Index...i-preliminary-performance-mali400-benchmarked
But the SW used at that conference (and maybe the HW since the phone gets very hot according to Anandtech) is probably not finished.
And benchmarks can be unreliable.
Unoptimised drivers is what it falls down to. Tegra has been around for longer, so it most likely has been optimised better.
Just need to wait and see.
Yeah, and samsung is well known for developping great drivers and software, which is updated regularly, just like the SGS had great performances out of the box thanx to the clever use of RFS
I do agree that it's to soon to know exactly how it will perform, but I wouldn't count too much on samsung improving performances :-/

That actually depends. There is a get it now button on games that have been released. The preview games don't have that. Also some games aren't available in all regions. An example on which it worked was dungeon defenders.
First I was like yay because Tegra 2 is awesome, but then I began thinking and yeah this is going to be a damn mess.
We could get the forum split up in GT-I9100 (Exynos version) and GT-I9103 (Tegra 2 version) and the damage could decrease, but it will still split up the Galaxy S II community on here and it depends what version the ROM makers are going to buy, unless there is no difference between the GT-I9100 and the GT-I9103 except for that it has a different SoC I don't see the big problem
I wonder whether the shortage of Exynos chips could be due to Apple's A5. At this point nobody knows what the A5 is, however the A4 was Sammy's Hummingbird so the A5 could just be the Exynos...
Guess we'll find out on the 11th.

Its been rumored that the galaxy s2 will ship with two different SOCs. The new dual core Hummingbird SOC by samsung and the tegra 2. They say they the model you get will depend on what market you are in.
Any idea wich will launch in the usa? And how will this effect the hacking? Different exploits for different models?

Well, it is the Exynos processor not a hummingbird (hummingbird is the processor of the original galaxy s), it is not yet known which will launch where and how it will effect hacking. We will have to wait for that.

There was a discussion about Tegra and Exynos versions.
I remember that Tegra goes to south America and USA and that's all.
Is that Tegra2 + SLCD even confirmed by anyone yet? I haven't seen anything but rumors.
All rumors, nothing that has been remotely confirmed by Samsung. Just a few benchmark sites posting the possibility of a Tegra 2 version.
At least thats what I have seen so far.
Tegra 2 + SLCD = Russia and Middle East.
not confirmed .. but like the old galaxy s i9000
when it came with slcd and another processor it was for ME and Russia
I think sammy would want their SOC in the "premier" markets. And maybe use tegra as a way to fill in the gaps in countries that are maybe less inclined to buy a super high end smart phone
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I have never seen proof anywhere that the Tegra 2 version will come with SC-LCD.
Has anyone else?
i think this time around, samsung is going to keep the screen on both the versions as Super AMOLED Plus, and only change the SOC where necessary.
Its probably not relevant to you guys but apparently the combination of Tegra/SAMOLED+ is coming to Hong Kong.

anyway glad its coming with SAMOLED+ cuz thats what makes SGSII stand out.
how can samsung still call a version with slcd and tegra 2 samsung galaxy s 2. its highly likely that handset with slcd will be considerably thicker and will be less efficient in consuming battery. there may be tegra2 with samoled plus but i highly doubt slcd version will come out. may be tegra 2 with amoled or superamoled ?????

No SAmoled and SAmoled+ at the same time! Samsung is replacing SA with SA+. SA is basically not produced. It is old technology, makes no sense for them to use factory capacities for SA when they can use them for SA+.
And Samsung Galaxy S II is a series or family of devices, just like the original Galaxy S was. You had various screen and processor technologies in the original SGS, as well as various screen sizes!
How you distinguish these - by model number.
SA+ with Exynos is model GT-i9100 (followed by letters of the target market)
hope this helps.

I have post this before that the rumor about the SLCD is over hype and not correct, why people still mention it, and yes, there is tegra 2 version but it come with super amoled plus...
There are Galaxy S II variants for International market. I9101 is NFC-enabled while I9103 is Tegra 2-based. So, which one will get the most of the development here? It's soooo important for me. I see that Galaxy SL has very little attention from devs. So, I don't want to be on a loser's side. Or is it not gonna be like Galaxy S/SL?
I think active contributors are also early users, the i9100 should be a good base. Anyway, the nfc ver. is very similar. The tegra based will be less followed I think.

I think that developers will focus more on the I9100 as its the first version to get release in the UK. the NFC version shouldn't be that much of a difference the tegra 2 will get less attention.

Technically NFC is only difference between I9100 and I9101, so same development can be applied.. for Tegra 2 version, all CPU development will be bit different.. Gamer lovers will like tigra 2(though I9100 is better for all non-Tegra games).. most Devs are into Roms, themes, root, overclock.. so for me I9100 is safe bet

The I9103 with its Tegra 2 chip should run existing software that is tailored for Tegra 2. Since there is huge backing behind Tegra 2, the I9103 is not really getting less attention.
since many "tegra" games already run on the i9100, and that the exynos is so much faster, tegra is like, bleh.

errr, nope, Gameloft has never done any "Tegra 2 only" games that I'm aware of, so all their games will probably be updated to support Exynos eventually.
I think "many" referred to the games which are supposed to run only on Tegra 2 devices like Samurai Revenge 2 HD, Pinball HD, or Guerilla Bob THD, but which work perfectly on Exynos once you use the appropriate drivers, proving that the "Tegra 2 optimised" is just marketting and a software lock.
Just wanted to make that clear, but actually I agree that most games will probably be optimised for Tegra 2 since it will be the most common platform. (Also Xperia play seems to have lots of games designed for it... I guess it's good news for those who are stuck on single core/Adreno 205 phones...)
I9101 is going to be powered by TI OMAP 4430 after all (source: GSMArena).

We in Croatia are getting the Tegra version and it does indeed have a Super Amoled+ diplay. Still it's only clocked at 1.0 Ghz compared to the 1.2 Ghz of the Exynos
I think its way too early to suggest any particular variant will get more dev, i have to say though that I don't think we know which chipset the NFC version will have though either.
It will ultimately depend on which phones hits the devs hands and that will probably be determined by region and quantity rather that who got which first first and what chipset it is running.
We are just going to have to see, but also hope that some of the dev is interchangeable between handsets with a few minor tweaks.

@ghost77, sorry
first, waiting for S I909 the dual on CDMA-GSM galaxy, but since theres no information about the exact time, i went to I9100, magnificent masterpiece by samsung
GSM arena has some info on what might be N2.
And I just bought a S3 due to the rumors.
5.5" screen
Also rumored is an 8MP camera with improved sensor, as well as 1.5 GB of RAM, along with a new Exynos 5250 chipset, featuring a dual-core ARM-15 processor. 4G connectivity will allegedly come standard for all international units.
---
I think that the N2 atleast should have a quadcore at 1.6Ghz, 2GB of RAM...
But, let's see what hapends, I have ordered the S3 (With a Beats Pro headset ) and if the N2 kicks ass...I might sell the S3 again for the N2...

I dont think n2 will have quad core and 2gb ram,
first, if n2 use top spec, what is the selling point for s3/4?
Second, now quad core is base on a9, the mentioned dual core is base on a15

if it goes with quad cpu like s3, then resolution will be the same, if resolution will be same, no point to make bigger screen.
So in my theory:
if goes with 5250 eynos, resolution and screen will be bigger
if with quad cpu, resolution and screen will be same
haha, I was right with my comic strip day before yesterday at the Note 2 rumormil thread.

GSMArena used the same source as the other guy who posted this in the general forum.
It's bogus.
Go read it. It's completely ridiculous.
This is how rumors get started.
A blogspam site ("ubuntulife") posted poorly written speculation a few days ago. I believe mobilesyrup picked it up and now gsmarena.
This is basically the equivalent of the blind leading the blind. Except in this case they're stupid. But maybe also blind, too.
This is also why "blogs" and "bloggers" aren't respected. They don't follow the tenets of journalism, aren't double checking their facts and sources, aren't expected to have any sort of journalistic integrity, have no accountability, don't follow style guides, don't have knowledge of the law regarding what/when/how they can write certain things and never had to attend school and/or receive certification to blog.
I expect this bogus "story" to fully make the rounds of the Internet.

Not necessarily. It depends on what their competitor's offerings are at the time. Samsung may be forced to move in the dual core A15 2.0ghz by end of the year depending on what HTC, Apple, Motorola shove into their devices.
When you think about it it makes sense to have two flagship models from a business point of view then they can almost always claim that they have the best hardware
And with that logic we can't make any prediction about n2 hardware until we see what competitors markets as an s3 killer
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I think the S3 and Note 2 will tackle 2 different markets - the more tech guys/teenagers and especially people who already have an S2 will opt for the most popular phone by following the market trend, which is the S3. While business users/people who take notes regularly & those who prefer larger screen, will opt for the Note2. If you look at all the Android phones that are released recently or will be released, there is not 1 single phone that is appealing except the S3. It's a win/win situation for Samsung and the company seems to be on a winning stride with its flagship phones.
My guess is Note2 will be sharing the same hardware (SoC) as the SGS3, like they did with the SGS2 and Note1, i would be happy with it, but if i may choose i rather have the dualcore A15.
Only time will tell...

I still can't believe that all flagship phones will be running FHD in 2013. I wonder how much battery can be saved using a HD display instead of a FHD display, rest all factors being equal?
I have a feeling that the benefits of going to FHD are merely from marketing perspective at this time. More resources used for GPU and display. "Diminishing marginal utility" applies here?
I just didn't expect it so soon. As long as battery life remains great, give me a 4K screen. I will never complain.

Not very impressive?Compared against what?Alienware laptops? My S3 is overclocked to 1.7GHz on the CPU side and 600MHz on the GPU side and still gets "only" up to around 18500 in Antutu.Even the Snapdragon 600 hovers around the 22500 mark. What did you expect?I'd like it better too,but hold on
Anyway, using a PowerVR GPU gets me excited. No more half-arsed ported games and hopefully better performance than the Mali ones. The MP-400 was lovely on the S2 but it's too 2011 and ARM's T-6xx series has yet to prove it's worth something, while PowerVRs are tried and true(Although I have to admit I'll miss the MP-400's monstrous fill rate and I'll hate depending too much on resolution again).I only hope that the Exynos Octa indeed performs considerably better than the Snapdragon 600.Not because the 600 isn't good, but if they are so close in performance, the S800 will obliterate everything and even the Tegra 4 will best the Exynos.I can stand having a less powerful SoC than Qualcomm's(After all the S4 pro blew the Exynos 4412 last year) but not NVidia.I just hate these guys and they deserved being at the bottom of the performance charts.
Anyway, sure thing is that by summer 2013 the S3 will look mid-end and the S2 will look like a toy.I can't wait to get the S4 and get it to run at 2GHz.Yes,I'm crazy.

I wonder how Samsung or any other OEM can make something inpressive at all. I had a Xperia Z for the weekend and my S3 doen't feel at all too old.
FHD is nice because it is the industry standard (PC Monitors, TVs ,..) but from my normal reading distance I don't see a difference worth spending money for.
Current high end 3D games run on both phones fine, but they do so on a S2 also....
If Samsung would have put 2GB into the I9300, I guess I skipped the upgrade this year.
Looks like SGS4 won't have premium materials, but plastic again:
http://www.sammobile.com/2013/03/04/eldar-murtazin-galaxy-s-iv-is-built-from-plastic/
HTC One: aluminium
Xperia Z: glass
Nexus 4: glass
iPhone 5: aluminium
So SGS4 will be the only flagship made with plastic?

Dont know if its true.. but that no5 surprising... I dont mind plastic at all..its light, makes it removable, and dissipates heat better.. no fuss about loosing paint like in alluminium and smudges like in glass ( the nexus n4 s4 chip is said to tgrottle at stock to save the glass).. performance and funtion above looks always..
I only wish they bring out a better design and look or I might get something else..

So does the Enoxsys Octo core cream the Snapdragon 600 found in the HTC One?
And is the S4 being announced and released on the same day?

What's the problem with polymer casing? I think it's a good marketing decision.
First of all, I'm not planing to keep the phone for 20 years.
Second, it makes the phone lighter.
Third, makes the phone cheaper.
Fourth, I prefer to pay for better techology then fancy casing.
Fifth, they all need case protector anyway.

Actually I believe the first phone wich got those features is the S3 on the leaked 4.2.1 rom. The only thing is even if they are activated, they don't work. I believe they need fixing and the rom was a test one or something. So yeah, it's not gonna be something S4 exclusive, we are going to recieve those too . Till now, all Galaxy S series demonstrated that they are BEASTS and very difficult to let behind, they all get features official or non-official.
Look back at the support the S1 recieves and you'll be amazed
Hello everyone, first of all, I am galaxy S4 user, I have both octa core and snapdragon. I am pretty sad about the poor battery life of Exynos S4(I play a lot of game) and the lack of custom developpement in the i9500 section.
I am pretty happy with the i9505 even if it "lacks" performance(Although it is already a beast with snapdragon 600) compared to the octa core and the future "Snapdragon 800" which will be rumoured to be integrated in the Galaxy Note 3.
I don't care if this device has 1 inch larger screen or something else. All I need in a phone is the absolute performance and the perfect fluidity when using. And the Note 3 seems to offer this performance with the Snapdragon 800. Playing games on the big screen fast device will be really cool, so is the SPen.
The only problem is that I am not someone patient. I have to wait 4 or 5 month until the Note 3 being released. So does this device really provide enough performance that I should wait for it?
(if it uses the octa core, I am sure to not buy it). Thank you for your advice.
Once it releases someone might be able to answer your question. Right now no one knows what the spec will be so no one can answer the question.

If you are impatient then you have not seen me yet. I used all the galaxy s and note series and I got them as soon as it reached my country. If I look back I can say that I have spent so much money on this. Ever since I got note 2, I am very much pleased with its performance, almost 0% issues. When S4 released, I was going for it, then saw that it has so many bugs right now, I stopped. Stopping wasn't an easy decision but I know it will be worth. If you just look at the rumored specs, it all suggests that its going to be a very powerful phone. The latest rumors suggest that it will not have an octa-core so I suggest you to hold your horse and expect an A+ device for note 3.

Really, how do you expect ANYONE to be able to answer that, when the device isn't released, or even had the final spec officially confirmed? You have an S4; keep it until the Note 3 comes out, then decide what you want to do.
Its Note3

Do you have a Samsung source on this?
Way too much rumor spreading around this concept pic.

The S4 is better because right now the S4 exists and the Note 3 is just rumors
If Note 3 has Snapdragon S800, definitely buy it
Get a Note 2. It is an S4 with a 5.6 inch screen.
The Note 3 is to the S4 as the Note 2 is to the S3, it's bound to have better features/ specs, plus the pen

not really.
1. Note 2 hardware is just worse than S4. I would never buy note 2 which is much bigger, slightly slower than the galaxy S4
2. 720p resolution on a 5,6 inch screen against 1080p on a 5 inch? I prefer the second one.

Then why even ask the bloody question in the first place?
Note 3 . Or maybe note 2 . I can never use smaller phones now .

Having seen both side by side, the difference is negligible for all practical purposes. I wouldn't swap one for the other just on that factor of screen resolution alone.

Nor the so called speed difference. On paper the s4 is faster yet in real life it's impossible to notice any difference in speed whatsoever. Both phones are lightning fast. What you can notice is that the Note 2 has an s-pen and a bigger screen.

Might as well buy the Note V! Now THAT one is powerful!
I already got two of them!
