wildfire compass problem - Wildfire General

because i cant root my wildfire (yet, even im not a fan of rooting) im still trying to fix my compass.
the problem started a few days ago when my compass for no apparent reason at all started pointing to left (west) and it points there no mater how i rotate the phone. and when i rotate it to 180 degrees from the direction its pointing it just goes wild.
the problem seems to be in the system calibration of the magnetometer. the magnetometer chip is ak8973 (i even found a datasheet for that chip) and system has a calibration (or something) data in a few files in the /data/misc/ and they are called..
rild_nitz_short_name_20404
rild_nitz_long_name_20404
AK8973Prms.txt.tmp
AK8973Prms.txt
but because i dont have root access i cant even confirm that they are there. can someone confirm that with a rooted wildfire please? .
now, the problem wouldn be that annoying if i could calibrate it once for all, but every single time i open some app that uses compass i need to calibrate it (like gps essentials).. and even if calibrate it it forgets that calibration the moment the screen goes off.
but even worse problem is google maps what dosent have any calibration, so i need to swing it all around a minute or so until it starts to work.. and again, when screen goes if it looses itself.
something like this..
youtube.com/watch?v=AqOmnI8A9Zg
i tried to get into safe mode (htc sent me the procedure) but i get into it for like 30 seconds, and then the phone reboots itself and gets into normal mode, so i cant confirm that its a system error. can someone help me whit this too?
im searching for a solution for days now, but without any luck.
did someone fixed this problem without rooting it (or factory reset because im in a lot of work these days so i dont have time to set up the whole phone and all app settings.. or is there a way to save all app settings and just put them back in?)

THE PROBLEM IS FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!
tomorow ill login to this forum with my real nickname, not this temporary one (i see that this comunity is great!! ) and then ill write a tortorial how to fix compass problem on non rooted htc wildfire with stock android 2.2.1 .
i see that adb isnt so complicated when you know what your doing, and its easy to learn .

excuse me, and could you please post a so wanted tutorial here.

Walking dead.... I can't be the only one

Ok I'm using newest energy cht rom radio 2.12.50 and shubcraft froyo android build with 384 zimage....
Heres the problem that I have had all week my phone works fine when I am stationary minimal screen freezes great speed but when I get up and walk with my phone and try to use it the screen freezes almost every time then the entire phone freezes. I have also noticed this on elevator and when I step out of my car.. this is weird and I know it can't be just me as its been going on for a week now.
So to sum it up stationary best phone ever...walking phone dead and I wanna slam it on the ground.

try the desire v5's zimage, no freeze at all
Im having same issues, with all the version i have tried, including V5 aparently this screen freezing is a known issue and makes the use of Android in our HD2 very very frustrating.
ive upgraded my SD to a class 6 and still suffering from it
Im wondering if there is a program that causes it or its just the OS...
in any case We have to be patient ,im sure pretty soon the amazing developers will come with a solution.
might be a screen rotation issue
Just came back from street, again same issue.
I thought it may be the network connection that was affecting the phone, so i switched to Airplane mode and turn off automatic updates, still this didnt help...
so im beginning to think this is related to yes, either the screen rotation (maybe as we walk it does affect the sensor )or gps..

I've just learned to deal. Its better than SoD's or being in Winmo and having to pull the battery out.
I actually noticed it today as I went from a dark room to a very well lit room so Im with u guys it seems its either rotation issue or light sensor issue andvi have no doubt in my mind the devs will have it fixed in no time just didn't see it mentioned anywhere else so figured it was worth a mention. Thanks all I'm so glad I'm not alone on this one.

when in windows mobile make sure to disable all battery and back light settings and in android change blacklight settings and sleep setting to stay on
I am having the same issue - using ChuckyDroidROM + shubCRAFT CM6RC2, basically when I start moving or even moving the phone the touch screen becomes very unresponsive and sometimes even the hardware buttons don't function properly. At first I thought it was just my device until I saw this post...
Think its a bug with manusfreedoms 384mb ram enabled Zimage dident get this problem using past images.
sure it will be sorted next image release.
I thought i was alone in this case too !
We are not a lot with that screen touch lag, so maybe we did something wrong. Here is what i found so far :
-Changing build don't rix the problem
-tried another radio, another rom...nothing.
I tested 27/07 03/08 cotulla zimage, now manufeeedom 382mo zimage-nopc, the problem is still here.
changed from a class 2 to a class 4 and seems to be worse. (!)
You are right, it seems to be worse when i am moving from one room to another so maybe it is gsensor related.
Right now it is hard for me to type that text,
Don't know what to do... buy a class 10 sdcard ?
I just got my HD2 today and got android set up. I'm noticing the same thing as everyone else with the unresponsive touchscreen. It happens every time I tilt the phone to try to change the screen rotation. Usually hitting the hardware button allows it to respond once again, but it happens quite often.
hey hey hey first and formost i see u guys all hav the same issuse what i dont see is ur device info along with the rom, radio, android verison, and the location ur android is stored ... i have the lates verison of droid v5 also energy with cookie full and my radio is 2.8 i believe android is on the sd card and running smooth ... now that the intro is out of the way hav u guys read what was needed , reason askin i found the thread where the question and answer is... and yes u guys are the only ones... now please do a search go up to the first thread of android on hd2, and good day to u all
Wingtytn, can you be more precise in your answer ? I am a quite long user in Xda, always try to help when i know and i never ask a question wich have been answered somewhere. I don't think i have the noob profile you seems to write. If you think about formatting sdcard, of course i did. I have a 2.08 radio, latest shubcraft build with manufreedom 382mo zimage. My rom was changed to a light android dedicated one, the latest chuckydroid rom. Just don't know what else to do and waste a lot of time trying to fix that from myself.

The TS issue is kernel related, that's why using an older kernel say the no speedy one should fix it. This is also the reason why this issue is being seen over multiple builds.

Thanks a lot shu8i, i will try an older zimage than the 27/07's cotulla.
Edit : Mmh exact same problem with the 23/07 zimage Cotulla_zImage_CABDET_NOSPEEDDY. That is weird.
I will order a clas 10 sdcard and see what happen...
Try the game ”Runners”. It uses both the camera and the g-sensor and freezes mad anytime, anywhere. Huge affirmation to the idea it's a bug of the g-sensor's or otherwize the screen's drivers.
DuperMan
Me too with screen freezes, i had tried all builds and same result. I think this is a problem with SD access because i noticed more freezes as more apps opened in backgroud.
Try to calibrate the g sensor
Found something ...
try disabling auto-rotation feature (settings -> display)
It works perfectly for me now.
Can you confirm that works for you too?
Did you dind a way to calibrate g-sensor on froyo?
Why the auto-rotation feature hangs so much for us?

magnetometer problem

Hello,
I have a problem with magnetometer / compass on my wildwire (htc fw rom 1.37.xxx)
I have installed "Bussola" from Market (or any other compass, the problem is the same...).
Using it, I noticed it doesn't work correctly and then it says there is an "incorrect magnetic field".
If I recalibrate it (moving wildfire to design an "8" ) , it then works but only if the screen is on.
If I press on power button to go to stand-by, when I unlock the phone there is the same problem and I have to recalibrate it; I didn't notice this problem when I buyed my Wildfire, It worked ...
Is it a possible problem of the new Htc rom? or is it an hardware problem? (I think no, as it shouldn't work anymore...)
Can you help me? is there any file on filesystem to wipe?
thank you.
anyone can test it?
Hi, Don't expect too much from me but I'm using wildfire and I'm used to "GPS Status" which test GPS, Magnetic field and the compass. I haven't experienced any problem with that.
I hope it's not hardware problem for your handset.
SOLVED!!
I have removed
/data/misc/ak8973prms.txt
Wildfire recreated it, and now works!
I can't try girello71's suggestion, as I've not rooted my wildfire yet (someone please tell me if I'm wrong on that !). But here is some more information that might be useful:
- my problems began (I think) when I installed "Satellite AR" and recalibrated using it. Prior to that, Google Sky Maps etc all worked very well. After the Satellite AR recalibration, Google Sky Maps and other similar things (e.g. compass apps) did not sense the phone attitude properly. Teeter was fine though. This confirms that it is a magnetometer rather than accelerometer problem ?
- despite being broken, all apps seem to respond temporarily to a recalibration, using the "waving around in a figure of 8" approach (this seesm to recalibrate in all the apps I've tried, despite them not documenting it - perhaps it is an OS thing). This allows, for example, Google Sky Maps to work in automatic mode, and compass apps to work, UNTIL you switch apps or sleep. Then you'll have to repeat the process.
Hope this helps.

I think there is no other method to remove this file... other than a factory reset!
ps: you can try with Android SDK and using this: "adb shell rm /data/misc/ak8973prms.txt" but I don't know if it works without a rooted phone

GPS fix CM7 DHD

After endless searching for the gps solution i've found a solution.
I've tested it and can confirm it works.
All credits go to the developer of faster fix (Bernard Bekker)
So here are the steps:
1. Download the CM7 rom ( I'm currently running the built #15 nightly)
link:http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=ace
2. After installing the rom and gapps set it up as you normally would.
3. Download Fast Reboot from the market (and install it).
4. After installing the Fast Reboot, download Faster Fix from the market (and install it).
5. Now turn off the gps (not in the notification bar, but in settings).
menu/settings/location
6. Run Fast Reboot
7. Run Faster Fix, and select your country and hit Go
A pop up should say: for example "Done set to:nl.pool.ntp.org" as I live in the Netherlands.
8. Turn on your GPS and reboot.
Now when you use the Google Navigation you should have a fast and steady fix for your GPS.
This won't work if you turn off GPS and on again.
In this case you have to reboot your phone!!! Remember to turn on the GPS bevore you reboot your phone!
It is not nessesery to repeat steps 1 to 7, just 8.
Just tried this and got instant GPS lock when I walked outside of my office. THanks for posting this.
Seems to work. Thanks for the information.

Maybe I am doing something wrong but I just followed these instructions and when I rebooted the phone froze on the splash screen. Had to recover and flash my nand. Have you heard of this problem?
No, i never had this problem, mostly if you make a lot of changes, reboot in to recovery and flash a .zip and than reboot, you might end up with a bootloop in the splash screen.

Just to inform you guys, if you are using a gel case on your Desire HD, it's going to have a noticeable impact on the GPS lock time, from two minutes down to only several seconds.
I have confirmed this with my Case-Mate Gelli, and there is also a video by someone else on YouTube showing this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUyhxm2NtDU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Faster Fix will still help with the lock time in both cases, so thanks to the original poster.
Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I have an HTC Desire CDMA from USCC with CM7 RC4 running.
?permanent fix
It worked but is it a permanent fix or every time you want to you GPS do u have to turn it on then reboot to get it working again? Thanks
Evo4g / Sprint, worked pefect (saved me from a lot of reflashing)!
Tnx
I still find the GPS to be very poor on my DHD. updated the radio, applied this fix and it still takes a long time to lock, even when outside. Its almost as if agps isn't working at all.
Just a thing to test
Menu>settings>applications>development
Make sure "Allow mock locations" isn't checked
I suffered with terrible GPS reception for weeks until I noticed this was checked. Now I get on average 3-7 yards accuracy, fixing in about 3 seconds
Also didnt work for me. Have flashed a few different Radios and ROM's, does anyone know a highly recommended Radio for CM7 and gps? (preferably on UK Orange if that matters / makes a difference to gps).

have you updated the RIL that applys to your radio?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1040986
also have you installed gps status from the market?
go into tools and reset the data
both those worked for me
Worked well for me! Got an instant lock in my house after doing it. Used to take about 2 minutes outside. Cheers
Hello!
What is in the gapps file and how do you install them?
Is it possible to use them with another rom or is they locket to CM7HD?
For the moment I am on RCmixHD.
Regards
So we can use RIL on CM7?? Wasn't there some problems??

This thread clearly says in the OP "not for CM." I don't know anything about RIL so maybe it will work, I just don't want to see someone have issues.

GPS problem solved!

GPS problem solved!
Have had huge problems with my GPS and sought advice both here and other forums.
EVERYTHING has been tried, all possible combinations of room's, radios, and ril'files, fasterfix, gps status, fastreboot, delete cache Dalvik etc. I can not count all the times I've gone out on the porch and pointed my HD to the sky with new hope but no result. The best I have achieved is fix during the 5-10 minutes with an accuracy of about 140m .....
Then I found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qm_z65LA8k
Thank you knglaser
It seems that the GPS antenna sits in the flash cover!
I tried to press the flashcover and it worked just like an on and off switch for the GPS, satelites just fell in and in a matter of seconds I had the fix of 10 satellites This with an accuracy of 5-6m.
Picked out the blitz cover and "adjusted" the contacts between the cover and the phone and put it back in place, it took about 2 minutes.
After this operation GPS works perfectly
I am now happy since this has been incredibly annoying, I use GPS to both training and in the car and have not been to happy to send the phone back to repair since this usally takes long time.
Hope this can help others who are struggling with the same problem?
Thank you for this. At first i dismissed this as my gps problems only started immediately after the ota gb upgrade installed - it was then taking over 4 minutes to get a fix. However in desperation i took phone out of case - simply pressed the cover in the place shown in video (didn't even have to remove) and hey presto now get fix in seconds. Put phone back in case and all is still well.
Simple but yet very effective - thank you.
Not sure why the upgrade should have triggered this problem though?
Rob

Sadly, pushing the cover down is not working for me. Thanks for the video though. I will have to get some tools and pop the cover off to see if it looks like my contacts are no good as well.
apparently i solved my gps problem but not like above. i tried but didnt worked. So i install the new version of gps test, go to settings and then i push clear AGPS from top.then update agps.restart application and seems to work now. I will see. Pls tell me if you try like me and what is your experience
update: unfortunately the problem come back again...
Any more who has tried if this helps? I'm about to tonight
Try this file, it work perfectly on my device,
also i have attached a restore, in case you dont like the fix.
EDIT: Flash in Recovery
Thanks! what does the patch do?

Quick question re Accelerometer

Good day XDA. I just noticed that my N7 is having problems with its accelerometer. I was playing temple run and mutant road kill and the characters always veer to the right.
Question is: is this a software or a hardware issue?
also, is there a fix/app if this is indeed a software issue?
thanks
well, i know that there is apps for calibrate the accelerometer, i can´t remember now the name, sorry, but i´m sure that you can find it on the market o google.
Anyways, did you try in diferents places? i mean, maybe the surface where you try wasn´t flat...
thanks for the reply man.. anyway, i already found a way to fix it and it's been holding up.

well first you have to confirm that you indeed have the gyro/accelerometer problem. you guys could download an app for that (i used Android Sensor Box). once that is confirmed, download the app "GPS Status". Run it and go to tools, then calibrate pitch and roll and just follow the instructions. I suggest you guys do this while your device is lying flat on a surface.
after trying this fix, i uninstalled GPS Status, rebooted my device and it held up. played temple run and the character started right smack in the middle lol. also tried checking the sensors using Android Sensor Box and it was calibrated. i just reinstalled GPS Sensor just in case i might need it down the road but im hoping this fix will be permanent. if it isnt, im pretty sure that this is a software problem and an update could give a permanent solution.
let me know if you guys get the same result i had with this.
Thanks

This didn't do the thIng for me neither
But I did the job like this.
Open an app that uses the compass. You can use GPS Status, Android Sensor Box or whatever app you like that uses a compass.
twist/turn your device 3 times around each of all the three axes
FINISH
Even after a reboot it works great.
But if you flash a new rom this fix will be broken
