Developer Only Posts - Vibrant General

Would it be possible to make it so that we can switch to a "OP posts only" mode that allows us to read only what the original poster has posted? For example if say eugene373 posted something but the thread is contaminated with a hundred pages of comments, we could switch to this mode and only see what eugene has commented to see what he has to say about his post. I think this would be really useful in some cases

I concur

Well then, it seems that you totally discount the ability of anybody other than the OP helping people or answering questions. Either that or you expect that every OP is awesome at keeping the OP up to date and answering everyones question, even if someone else answered it.
Since both of these things are rarely if ever true, your suggestion would simply not work out very well.
If you MUST have this feature, nobody need code in a new mode for you. Simply:
Open the thread
Click Search this thread
Click advanced search
Search for only posts by the name of the OP

Good Idea
I like this idea.

Dont get me wrong I use the posts of other members to get my questions answered most of the time, but sometimes I just want to see what the OP has to say.
But thanks ill start searching threads

I am pretty sure the method I posted will give you exactly what you wanted, but as a added tip; I like to copy the username of the OP so I can simply paste it. That way I don't have to remember spelling, capitalization, etc.

Because this is a development thread. Where people develope programs and provide assistance on them. Its not the yellow pages. No one here works for you. We are not your secrateries. New threads like this clog up the forum and make it difficult for those of us who use search. Take some time to read the forum rules.
Here is the hint. Top of this page to the right is a "Search" button. Its just below your name. Use it to search the contents of your original subject line of this thread. If you can copy/paste the http address of your search result to prove to me you did your due dilegents, but still cant find your answer, I will help you learn how to use search properly so you don't continue to post new threads. But at this point I don't think you have used more than 2 minutes of your time searching on your own.

Wow, never before have I seen such "jerk" behavior at xda deverlopers. I know the person should have searched and I'm not discounting that fact, but there is NO reason to jump down someone's throat with that tone. Sorry, I'm a Japanese and I ever saw how much loathing and hatred went into your post. Next time, please do more courteous behavior... if not, I hate to think of how people will treat you.

The reason people tell you to search is because this site, like any other activity has rules. One of them is to READ and SEARCH to find the answers yourself before you post a question that has been answered in numerous other locations. While some people may be overly aggressive in their suggestion that you use the search function, it does not make their point any less valid. There are a lot of people on this site, and all of them are volunteers. Nobody gets paid to be here. When you decide that you're gonna clutter the forum with threads and posts that have already been answered very thoroughly in easily searchable locations then it just makes it more difficult for people who actually do know how to use the site properly to find anything. So in the future, if you have an interesting idea (which you did) then do some looking to see if maybe somebody else had that same idea and post your thoughts there. That way everyone who is interested in that idea can go to one place to follow any development that happens there. Otherwise you are basically saying to all the people who put a lot of time in here, that you think your time is more valuable than their's. Which puts us in this perpetual cycle of people who don't know anything complaining because the people who do know the answers want them to learn how to find the answers rather than just giving them the answer.

Search the entire forum. In fact google the interenet for the question I posted in that thread. It is no where to be found. And it was a development idea posted in a development thread after all that searching had been done. Your not comparing apples to apples. In fact there is no comparable comparison.
Anybody got an answer to that thread let me know b/c it still hasn't been solved!!!! LMFAO!!

Just agree that new threads are reserved for new ideas and program that have not been done before. And that we should discourage all the lame threading.

I was less of a dip**** and it continued to happen. At least this is getting some attention that may make a noticable difference of noob's continuing down the same old path of ask questions first, search as a last result.
It would be great if the Moderators would put a sticky at the bottom of the sticky posts for this forum titled "How to Use Search before you post a New Thread" since noob's aren't even taking the time to read the forum rules. While their at it make the title of the sticky thread alway stay BOLD even if no new posts are made in it.

There is nothing wrong with being helpful. But it is how you help. When you help in this kind of a situation it only confirms in a persons mind that all they need to do is ask!! And on this forum that wrong. Here the forum rules cleary state to search first. They are outlined in great detail. So giving answers on redunt threads started like these only goes to encourage that kind of behaviour. Did you think that if goofeyass had the cab then he must have gotten it somewhere as well?? Then this guy can search and locate it.

@Curious George: Every single post I have seen of yours in the past few days seems to be *****ing about new threads etc. Why? It's been going on for ages and it's not going to stop, especially with such a crude attitude to it, so why bother annoying people? It might increase your post count but it's incredibly annoying for everyone!
Let the mods do their job.
GEORGE! A great way to control a forum is to let the moderators do they job. If disagreed the topic would be locked, or better: deleted. The forum rules clearly state: Only post here if you are a developer/resource etc... If you go hard into the rules then you just broke them as well. Until a moderator speaks we should be nice. I'm sure you are nice as well but you just dont sound like that. A good community way of saying what you just did is:
"Here is your file. Next time, please take the time to search thus NOT spamming the forum with useless threads."
And see: now even I broke the forum rule ;P
Part from this: The forum search function here sux bigtime and its a bottleneck to this great place. Atleast, I think we both can agree to that.
Moderators: Shall you just lock this nonsense?
some people take the internet too serious
Here is some screens of the plugin in action.
please follow the rules or the thread will be moderated

HTC Home and PocketCM

hello,
how would I go about setting up HTC Home to shortcut to PocketCM for SMS instead of the default wm6.1 SMS app?
I have dcd 2.3.2 installed. I still like the HTC Home plugin and it works very well for my needs, however it is a pain in the arse that the shortcut "notification" points to my old app. Not sure if I am explaining this correctly. On the HTC Home plugin, there is the Email notification, the SMS notification and the Missed Calls notification right under the clock. The middle "number" points to the SMS app, I want to change this to point to PocketCM. And yes I have the option unchecked in pocketcm to "use old application for sms".
Thanks.

If I did that, then every time you need something you didn't want to spend more than a few moments looking for you would just simply start a new thread and ask a question. It would be your trained response. Thats not acceptable here. The answer is on this site. It may or may not be the one you want but I am not willing to give it to you. You must search for it. I know it exists because I searched for it.
Thanks

Try checking the links next time; even though the results don't specifically say "PocketCM SMS" or whatever in them, they are related. I searched "HTC HOME SMS" and the 3rd, 4th, and 5th results are all the same request that you have, except with different programs.
No harm done, though, now you know.

OK Curious G... now that you've gone against your own statements by perpetuating an extraneous thread. Yes I did just perouse some of your previous posts and I may add that early on you did have a few less than stellar posts of your own. Dont forget that we were all once noobs and needed a little guidance. If everyone that achieved Sr.Member status stopped answering arsenine questions then there would be no new development and we'd all still be using locked phones with only the junk the carriers put on them.
In any case getting back on toppic.
I do believe that the question was asked, if the SMS button on HTC Home could be redirected to use another application.
The short answer is NO it can not. It is hard coded into the signed DLL file. There is a thread where someone was attemting to HEX edit the DLL file to redirect the functions. They had minor success but nothing that would enable what you and many other are looking for. The other problem was that since the app is signed, altering it would break the signing and result in the app not functioning.
This concludes our special report.
We now return you to the previously scheduled flaming.

I told him in the second post that the answer may or may not be to his liking. I already new the answer was no. I didn't want him to have that answer here becuase he would and will just continue to post questions as he sees fit instead of being conditioned into deep searching first.
Ah.. I see. It was learned behavior. As a noob you were repeatedly instructed to search for your own answers and as such you propogate the cycle by disceminating the same attitudes toward other noobs.
I also see you contradict yourself within the same sentence by stating that you care nothing of the status indicators yet call out that I am still just a noob. While yes my post count is extreemly low and my join date is October of last year. I have in fact been coming to these forums for quite a long time and on average spend hours a day reading the posts. On average I rarely post and typically find my own answers. So while in title I am still classified as a noob I would in fact be nothing close to noobish.
With respect to "it is about the expectation of people to be their personal answering service in a hacking and development forum."
Definitions of forum:
a public meeting or assembly for open discussion
a public facility to meet for open discussion
I do believe that by expecting people to come here and answer their own questions that would completely undermine the definition of forum. As such this would mean that the devs should not share the information that they have gained and tell everyone to go find the answers themselves.
Some forum that would be. Post after post of go search for the answer.. Oh wait. No one ever shared the answer therfore there is nothing to search for.
Finally. If you already knew the answer, then would it have just not been simpler to post NO IT CAN NOT and have been done with this?
As for
"I didn't want him to have that answer here becuase he would and will just continue to post questions as he sees fit instead of being conditioned into deep searching first. "
I guess I missed the part in the forum agreement, when I signed up, that stated any question can be asked yet Curious Gerorge reserves the right to determine if you deserve the answer.
Although I do percieve that you either personally know goon55 or you are clairvoyant as you know that he will continue to ask for answers to questions instead of searching for them on his own. If the clairvoyancy is accurate then please do share what the lottery numbers will be this week.

almost every thread i've clicked on in the past few weeks has a response from Curious George saying "try the search button". did you get all 350 posts by repeating this same response to every thread you've chimed in on? its really annoying. almost annoying as it is for you to see these "reposts". so just calm down dude. its not that big of a deal

Actually, they are are to make an honest attempt at answering their own questions. That is done by searching. In this Forum the developers post programs and support is provided by both they and other members who may be able to lend a helping hand on that topic in that thread. Others may lend a suggestion towards a development idea but only after it has been researched to confirm they are not double posting. As for the dictionary definition you have quoted; well, for here, your just plain wrong. Probably has to do with that fact that you are noob and haven't read the forum rules yourself. This forum has a clear policy stating a member of any calibur should detail search before they post.

I guess I missed the part in the forum agreement, when I signed up, that stated any question can be asked yet Curious Gerorge reserves the right to determine if you deserve the answer..

Yes, you did!
Although I do percieve that you either personally know goon55 or you are clairvoyant as you know that he will continue to ask for answers to questions instead of searching for them on his own. If the clairvoyancy is accurate then please do share what the lottery numbers will be this week..

It's a gift. I would share it with you but I believe you spend too much time trying to come up with big words to impress yourself. And your lucky numbers are 35, 4, 17, 12, 61. But play them at your own risk!!
In closing knowldege is for sharing so goon55 now that I've shared my knowledge with you pay it forward, learn what you can, and help out some other noob in the future.

Yes, pay it forward by directing people to post were they should and answer their question there. As to eliminate the excessive amount of repeat threading that occurs in this forum of this site.
Here is an attempt at my ability to impress myself with big words, HeyCrop, Your feable attempt to participate in any intelligent coversation only goes to exagerate your already pathetic lack of mental ability.

almost every thread i've clicked on in the past few weeks has a response from Curious George saying "try the search button". did you get all 350 posts by repeating this same response to every thread you've chimed in on? its really annoying. almost annoying as it is for you to see these "reposts". so just calm down dude. its not that big of a deal

Try to search first but if you don't find the answer feel free to ask. I will help if I can!

None of the above. I'm an Integration Engineer for one of the leading global companies in component and systems manufacturing and distribution. My primary task is to write assembly/configuration documentation for hardware, software and various OS's for our production lines.
I basically get handed a pile of components with details on how a particular customer needs the system to function etc. I then build, configure and document it so that it can be reproduced hundreds or thousands of times without error.

Everybody knows this already. Don't read. It wont help anyone.

There were always a few occasions when I was playing with my vibrant and noticed my brightness would increase randomly. I just figured out after some investigation, that if you slide your finger ALONG the status bar, so left to right either way, it will adjust the screen brightness. Just a tip in case anyone wasn't aware. It's really not an obvious feature to discover so I figured it might help people.
Ha, what a strange feature.
Nice find!

wow, nice response. all he was telling you that there is a link to all kinds of good and useful tips like that...
hmm, cant figure out why developers leave xda
Wasn't asking for more tips. Wasn't asking if there was a two line blurb saying this already. Posted to help out people that didn't pick up on this. I've seen a lot of complaints of brightness not being in the notification bar toggle. Compared to all the other things that are repeated over and over I don't see it necessary to tell me what's for "my own good". If you already knew, hit back and move on. If my thread was entitled "I want to learn new tricks and tips" it'd be appropriate. Besides from this one "tip" everything else in the sticky is stuff I was already aware of.

Dude, just don't title this "does everybody know...". Anyone who knows how to use this forum knows your useless trivia. You successfully informed 2 noobs about a known feature that's been threaded a dozen times already. Congrats.

But, yeah, this is fairly well-known. I still use auto-brightness instead, though, cuz I'm lazy like that.

good hell is it that time of the month again?
IF you/other people would read the stickies, or use the search function you/other people would have found what you were looking for. not to mention he responded with a link to the sticky that has loads of other very useful information that you may be trying to figure out, and that when you do figure out you will post a new thread for something that has already been covered in another thread that isn't that hard to find because it is stickied....

So it wastes time because my title is bad, yet you took more time from your life to post that? 2 people is still 2 people. I get more pleasure from people like you that think you're defending....I'm sorry what exactly are you defending right now? Anyone who knows how to use the forum can figure this out, yes. However anyone who has a life and doesn't read every word of every thread can find this easier. It's a feature that will be used daily. This thread will eventually go to the bottom just like all the other old thread. RELAX.

Look I found this feature on my own, accidentally, and shared it. I wasn't going to search the entire forum to see if it had been mentioned before I shared. Idiot.
Don't worry. I edited the title since everyone knows everything. Go rag on the consistent threads of people asking where to find froyo roms, lag problems, and people starting threads wondering whats wrong with their gps.

You're right. And the word "douchbagery" is definitely one of those common terms found in the word choice of an adult.
Why can't we play nice?
your new title brings even more attention to this thread, I clicked because I was curious wtf was going on in here...
so now are you not only wasting everyones times with a feature that everyone knows, but now you're also wasting my time by giving your thread a confusing title.
I hope you burn in hell.

Haha. Hey it says don't read now! Damn I can't do anything right hahaha.

Make a dev tread clearer..

Hi, I'm trying something done for the topicstarters in a dev tread. Please read and tell me your thought.
streamnlnl said:
Question,
Is it possible for a topic starter in a dev tread to clean his own tread in the futere?
Mayby it's a idea to ad that option if a topic starter asked that.
And that they can only clean his/her tread?
I think it make yours and theirs live a lot relaxer.
You don't need to watch every tread. And the dev can keep his tread cleen without spamming and the same question over en over again.
Sorry for my typo.....

Do you really think this is a good idea. Members get into fights, even topic starters. This could easily be misused, and I'm certain it will lead to more aggravation than it will solve.

Yes, I really think this is a good idea.
You can make rules before you ad the option. Like new members.
The dev need (for example) a least 100 post* before they can ask you for the option. Then you can screen the past of that person . And if they misbehaving. Then we (the not dev people) have many options to contact you. And after you warning a dev. The next time he goose across the line, he lost that option for good ...
But this is just my opinion. And again, I thinks this good really worked.
Thanks for answer me.

No, rules are fine as is. And this is in the wrong section
Yeah I think this is a good idea
I think the idea is good in theory, however I don't see it being as good in practice. First, the devs rarely post anyway. I don't think they also want the responsibility of cleaning their own threads. To be honest, it is usually not the devs complaining about off topic. It's the senior members who have self assigned themselves forum police. I can definitely see something like this getting out of hand or misused.
I think the 10 posts minimum to post in the dev threads is both part of the problem and solution. Now we have noobs posting new threads wherever they can just so they can get a question answered or get their post count up. The problem is that they didn't LEARN anything by that rule. At the end of 10 forced posts they are still wanting an answer to their dev questions, so they post it in a dev thread anyway.
With xRecovery and the increasing ease of modifying your phone, more and more less experienced people are hacking their phones. Those people are inevitably going to have more questions, and the current "devs only" approach leaves them no option but to post in the devs thread.
I think the recent trend of linking a discussion thread to the dev thread is a more feasible and fair way to go. It would be better if somehow xda could link the discussion thread, rather than having a link hidden amongst the posts.
JMHO
Something such like this isn't possible, only if you would create in the Admin Control Panel a special usergroup to move devs to it. Just to much work for such a little thing.
this is not a good idea
and this would be apparent if people have been here for a length of time
im gonna give a scenario here
ok developers can mod their own threads. what if that same dev then does something bad and underhanded, and then a member in the threads knows and posts it in the thread (this has actually happened before). the dev then goes and deleted all traces of this from the thread so the moderators never know of the developers wrongdoing
in a perfect world this maybe a good idea
however at the minute no. this would allow a developers too many tools to cover up any moment of ill judgement
Not a good ideal for me. I'm sorry
