Hi I am currently running debian on my phone using the method outlines here
http://www.myhangoutonline.com/2009/11/22/install-linux-on-your-g1/
Ive gotta say it quite slow and the method of installation is strange.
Here is a video of someone dual booting NATIVE debian on a G1. Read descrip in video for more info.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tX1BOGl8Fnw
I would really want an option where you boot into recovery (Holding Home) and there is a menu where you can choose to boot into a normal recovery (Amon_Ra's) and the other options would let you choose between what OS you want to boot into like Gnome,OpenMoko,Debian. A normal boot would take you back to android.
Speeking of OpenMoko
there is a tut here
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/OpenMoko_on_HTC-Dream
and i was wonderin weather anyone had tried this because it seems very interesting and would make it possible to bood gnome, debian etc
any opinions are highly appreciated
let me know what you think.
i dunno if im allowed to but bump
donut = 1.6 right?
yes

Hi!
I've got OpenMoko dual-booting natively on my G1.
When I first looked into the problem, I saw that:
1) OpenMoko option involved boot flashing that would disable booting into Android.
2) Debian option had no ready-to-use rootfs. You had to bring on the usbnet and install debian packages through netinstall. But Debian was able to dual boot, thanks to FukTheRegister's excellent recovery image.
I surely needed something in the middle
I had contacted the OpenMoko port developer, leviathan (a nice guy btw). He's doing some great job of hacking the forked Android kernel to work on HTC Dream together with some other guys. He told me that he was continuing his work on OpenMoko for HTC Dream and that made me want to try it instead of Debian. By the way, FukTheRegister's Debian and Ubuntu ports are based on leviathan's OpenMoko kernel.
What I did to install and dual-boot OpenMoko was:
1) I partitioned my microSD card into three partitions: FAT, ext3, ext3
2) I extracted the OpenMoko rootfs to the third partition (ext3)
3) I made myself a recovery image that would consist of the most recent OpenMoko kernel from gitorious AND FukTheRegister's ramdisk (I just glued them together and threw away some modules to make it fit into 5Mb - maximum for recovery partition images)
4) I copied the recent kernel modules to /lib/modules/ on the 3rd partition of the sd card
5) I copied my recovery image to the sd card and flashed it with flash_image recovery /sdcard/openmoko-recovery-partition3.img right on the phone (under root).
After that I was able to boot OpenMoko with holding HOME + END during the bootup or Android (holding nothing).
See http://vaskas.ru/om-g1/ for all the relevant files.
If you want to try it yourself:
- repeat stage 1) after me
- take the openmoko-rootfs-20091128.tar.gz and repeat stage 2) after me
- copy the openmoko-modules-20100128.tar.gz to /lib/modules/ on the 3rd partition and extract it there
- take the openmoko-recovery-partition3.img and repeat stage 5) after me
P.S. I am not 100% sure that it's going to work for you, because I experimented a lot. It's pretty likely to work though.
hi again vaskas!
thx for work. Tried your setup, it worked for me.
Now it would be nice to have a recovery with an option to boot the second ext3.
Openmoko on Dream ----> nice!
Seems to get a usb connection:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Usb_networking
Is a ssh/dropbear server already running on boot?
vaskas thx so much for the huge leap forward ecept im a little confused. so when i hold home + power using ur method it will boot into openmoko, butif i boot normally it wouild go into android, but what if i wanted to boot into normal recovery like amon_ra's?
if i boot into android normally and then run quickboot app and select recovery will it boot opoenmoko or amon_ra's recovery. also with your method does keeping apps on the first ext3 still work? while the second ext3 is for openmoko?
also when making second ext3 partition what size should i make it?
p.s this is sooooooo sick with open moko the possibilities are endless aswell as for people who prefer they can turn openmoko into debian and some time in the future android
so future = openmoko installed instead of android and then being able to boot debian/android or stay in openmoko environment.
also if it's not to much trouble vaskas can u please make a vid and put on you tube or here thx in advance andthx for ur hard work

No, normal recovery won't be there, since my image replaces it. As far as I know, it's the only way to dual-boot now. If you wish to use your normal recovery image (amon_ra's or cyanogen's), just flash it with flash_image recovery my.img. When you're done with it, flash it back to openmoko's.

I haven't tried quickboot yet.
Yes, Apps2SD still works perfectly with the first of ext3 partitions. I suggest that you make the second one at least 700Mb in size. I've got 500Mb taken by OpenMoko, for instance.

Well, you shouldn't really thank me since I only built a recovery image It's the kernel and ramdisk hackers who rock.
I'll make a vid when I have some free time, but I really suggest that you try it yourself

FukTheRegister's ramdisk has such an option. I can try to make such a recovery if you need it.
Yes, dropbear is started automatically.
I'd love to see a solid and stable distro that would provide all the things that Android doesn't have, with:
- A compact desktop environment, supposedly e17 or LXDE
- Midori or Google Chrome
- Pidgin
- Sylpheed or Claws for GPG-secured e-mail
- MPlayer or VLC
- FBReader
- evince
- AbiWord
- Gnumeric
- Conky
- Gpodder for podcasts
- Some music player like Sonata
- Cron, sshd, gcc, scripting languages like Python and Ruby
- Zhone for making calls, texting, storing the address book
See, I'm not advocating touch-oriented software. I think we still need touch-capable apps for calling, texting and the address book. The others can be easily manipulated with the trackball and keyboard on G1.
That's what we should aim for IMHO: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Image:Debian_lxde_zhone.png
OpenMoko project has all this stuff. And that's really awesome. The question is if such an OS should be based on Angstrom (like OpenMoko SHR) or Debian (see http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Debian). My preference is Debian since I'm a long-time Debian/Ubuntu user.
i prefer debian too and i will try this when i get home
i'm sorry for my really dumb question.
but how can i copy something from windows (7) to a ext2 partition?
and if you are creating those partitions, do both ext2 have to be primary or
one primary and one secondary?
thx in advance

They both have to be primary. I also recommend you to upgrade them to ext3 which is more stable thanks to journaling.
As far as I know, it's not possible to write to extX partitions from Windows. You can copy the files you need to the FAT partition and move them within the phone using Astro or other file manager.
You can mount the second ext3 partition from Terminal Emulator in Android like this:
$ su
# cd /sdcard
# mkdir SD2
# mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /sdcard/SD2
Then it will be accessible from Astro in /sdcard/SD2.
i followed all the steps correctly but it just gets stuch at boot screen if i try to boot into recovery
any advice
maybe this has something to do with the fact that i have ebi1 phone?
pls help i really want this
EDIT:
wow im dumb i figured it out if u look at my sig ull see the way my partitions are setup
i followed all ur steps except each time i changed instructions from p3 to p4 becasue i also have a linux swap so when i installed this recovery it tried to boot from part3 which is my swap and obviously didn;t work
so vaskas can u please for everyone who has a linux swap release another recovery except that boots from part4?
Have also a swap as the fourth partition.. That doesn't matter, I think. Its only important, that the second ext3 is the third partition.
Heres my partition table:
fdisk -l /dev/mmcblk0
Code:
Disk /dev/mmcblk0: 1977 MB, 1977614336 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 240 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000ac1bc

Do you mean you're stuck into the "G1" screen? If so, it's a recovery/kernel problem, not really connected with partitioning and stuff. I'm not sure if this openmoko kernel supports EBI1/32A, may be it's the problem
Well I have a dream which is 32b but with ebi1 radio I think this is the problem because amon_ra has a special recovery just for rogers dreams meaning something is different between them
If u could compare amon's rogers to normal recovery and find the differences could u chabge yours to make the latest part 4 file ebi1 compatible?

Frankly speaking, I don't think I'm going to have much time for this Since my radio is different, I won't be able to test it properly too.
Actually, I hope that more people join the thread so that we'll be able to solve much more problems together. I wonder where the guys from "Installing Debian on G1" are gone, I saw 2-3 people really interested in native Linux there.
Can you still rename the thread? If so, what do you think about appending something like " - Native OpenMoko and Debian" to it?
EDIT: compared Amon_Ra's recoveries in hex editor, they seem quite different
I just followed this article to run ubuntu on my nexus s with CM7 running on it.
but each time I typing "bootubuntu"
I got this error:
mount: mounting /dev/loop1 on /data/local/ubuntu failed: Invalid argument
This error should happen when executing this line in bootubuntu:
mount -t ext2 /dev/block/loop1 /data/local/ubuntu
Any ideas ?
Are you sure that the kernel you are using supports the ext2 filesystem and loopback device?
Last lines of "dmesg" command might be helpful (if it exists).
how-to-install-ubuntu-on-your-android
This is the article I followed.
I'm not sure whether CM7 support ext2 and loop device, but I see somewhere people said they run ubuntu on CM7 successfully, that's why I post this thread and hope someone can confirm it and show me the steps.
Or let me know your experience on how to run Ubuntu on nexus s.
I like the busybox way to run ubuntu, means if I run a native ubuntu, I can't use my phone feature anymore.
If you read this: http://androlinux.com/android-ubuntu-development/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-android/
Just a few lines into the text there is this paragraph:
For example, G2 Phone and Nexus One both come with loop device support so there’s no need for us to compile a new kernel for it but for others, you may have to.

I don't know whether the cm7 kernel kernel supports loop either, but there are many kernels floating around this forum. Maybe one of them does.
Thanks man.
Finally I figure this out. When I got this phone, the seller had already pre-installed a rooted CM7 and busybox. That may cause the problem.
After I re-install the busybox with the latest version, it works.
So CM7 and Nexus S are good to run Ubuntu.
Thanks for taking your time once again.
(I wasn't really sure if this might fit into "Development", so I put it here, maybe a mod will move it, if it's a dev topic )
Anyways, here we go, I DUALBOOTED two different, independant ROMs on the S2

First off:
This is only a little experiment I did like "c'mon, has to be possible" - this is NOT (at least yet) tweaked for usability and anything the like, just a humble experiment.
That said, don't flame me if things are rather complexicated to do this ATM.
Maybe I'll come up with a more userfriendly way of setting this up, maybe someone else does, maybe no one does.
Also now that I found a base on what to do, there might be different ways (more easy ones maybe) to set this up, I'll keep toying around with it.
But let's cut to the chase, shall we
So, how was this set up? I'll give a brief rundown of what I did:
I edited a few .rc files in the initramfs of the kernel to make it actually perform a full boot when recovery mode was triggered and to fire up recovery mode when in battery-charging mode.
I also edited a few mounts in the boot .rc for the 2nd OS (in "recovery" mode) to use different partitions for /system and /data, so that we'd end up with really independant installs.
What partitions did I missuse for that:
partition 12 (mostly unused, only when installing a stock ROM AFAIK) for /system - that's a neat choice IMO as p12 is 512MB in size, just as p9 where /system usually sits on
partition 7 (which is usually /cache) for /data
gives us only 100MB of user data space, but for now that's OK, as said, it's only an experiment on how such a thing could be done.
with the original partition for /cache "gone", I mounted a tmpfs for it.
So the OS still has a usable /cache
Then I set up the two OSes:
(dualboot kernel not yet flashed)
Launchprep part 1:
I made a CWM backup of my normal installation I was running (stock XXKG6 at the time).
I installed DevNull-Test AOSP as to it's instructions
Some su'ed voodoo via a terminal while having the 2nd OS (the DevNull AOSP one, in this case) installed - best done in recovery mode via ADB:
rm -Rf /cache/*
cp -Rp /data/* /cache/
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p9 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p12 bs=4096
That did "set up" the 2nd OS to where it's supposed to go.
Launchprep part 2:
Then, "advanced restore" of the backup made a few minutes earlier:
- boot
- system
- data
Reboot
At this point OS #1 is running again and OS #2 is sitting in hiding, prepared to roll - so, let's roll:
Flashed the modified "dualboot kernel" (via an App or Odin or magic, doesn't matter).
---> DONE <---
reached the point to where everything works as shown in the video.
As said above already, yes it needs some manual work to set it up, yes there's a lot of things that might not work, yes there are other/better ways to set it up.
It's only a humble experiment - lot's of space for improvement.
Maybe you like it - for those who do, I wanted to share this
Attached to this post you find the modified kernel I used, it's based on my v1.20 custom kernel (see sig) but with the above mentioned changes.
I've seen the video m8, this is totally different approach, ur giving this device a new dimension. love u "in a straight way" hahaa
there currently an app called Bootmanager which also handle up to quadruple booting. But sadly currently only support HTC phones.

well, one can hope!
Thanks OP this is an awesome concept! Very happy to see you posted it with a video! and nice boot animation!

Yeah, that's the thing.... that app is HTC only.... but we have Samsung S-II and want dualboot as well.
I'm already brainstorming on how to enhance the actual usability of this, i.e. flashing a 2nd OS directely to it's place instead of first installing it to the main system partition. But there is problems when /data is not mounted to the original partition, at least stock doesn't like it on initial boot.... well, well....
That is great. Going to use this for sure. This should be in development for sure.
Congratulations already.

but i want to ask one thing
SD card needed for this or not ?
That would be really cool (and definitely should goes to original development). Does it work with CM7/MIUI + custom rom?

No, so far this completely works with all internal storage.
But I have a few ideas I have yet to try to get mounted from other places - like images in /sdcard for example (I *so* hope that'll work.... )

exactly what i was hoping for.
great job - pls continue your work
Hi i tried this with instanity rom last night. When I use the three buttons to boot it just sits there not booting. My guess is the kernel is not compatible. Unless I made a mistake somewhere.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Hm, yah, might be that the kernel isn't fully compatible with that ROM, what kernel does the ROM usually use?
Did you boot it up fully at least once before copying /data to /cache ?
Yes I did fully boot up. But his kernel didn't have advanced activated in recovery so I flashed your kernel and moved the cache okay. But it said /data not found when I ran the 2nd command line.
I will flash aosp later. I like that rom.
I am not sure what kernel nitr8 uses. I think it is his own, Insane.tar would you like it to see if they can work together.

Hm, yeah, that sounds like something didn't work.... make sure you run those commands as root, i.e. "su" as very first command (I'll add that to the first post).
Give me a direct link to the ROM and I'll try it.
Make take a few days though as I'm away from my computer a lot because of work the next two days, but I'll try once time permits.
Well yeah, and this still is in highly experimental stage, if I (or someone else) should ever get this to more stable and reliable state, I'll make an easy to use installer/setup tool
But I got a few other ideas on setting it up I have to try first....

This is the complete rom. Only 47mb. I thought you would like the whole rom

May be someday WINDOWS Mo 7 and Android on our sweet beast
Hi
I tried again with Aosp Dev-null. I still get this error "cp: can't stat '/data/*': No such file or directory "
after running this command line " cp -Rp /data/* /cache/ "
Any Ideas ?
It still doesn't boot if I press 3 button it brings up the boot logo and then black screens until it boots to the 1st partition.
Thanks for the link, will download and try as soon as time permits.
Also, try this command sequence, I got an idea what the issue maybe might be, give it a shot:
Code:
su
rm -Rf /cache/*
busybox cp -Rp /data/* /cache/
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p9 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p12 bs=4096
(use "busybox cp" instead of plain "cp", maybe it helps)
And some update on my ongoing thoughts for those interested:
- got an idea on how to make a more easy to use App for prepping and setting up the dualboot environment
- managed to do a neat thing I didn't really think it would work: issued a "mount" command and the OS thought it was mounting a partition of the internal flash (/dev/block/mmcblk0p12 in this test, but was testing for later on actually doing it with p9 - you might see where I'm headed here ) but instead of the partition it actually mounted from an .img file! (loopback)
i.e. "mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /somedir" actually mounted "/somepath/someimage.img" to "/somedir" instead of the partition from /dev/block/... (you just gotta love Linux and it's flexible way of handling things....)
NOW, imagine /dev/block/mmcblk0p9 (the partition carrying the system) and p10 (data) being (kinda) transparently mounted from an IMAGE FILE
I "only" have to find a way to sneak this in before init starts mounting stuff.
If there's a way to do THAT.... unlimited multiboot from OS images, anyone?
(so far this is kinda dreaming, but would be cool to get it working )
Hey Everyone, Good News- I finally figured out how to get XFCE on webtop, and take off Awn Dock. (Er, disable it.) I realize that its been done before and that there is a guide, but the guide I found ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054213 ) seems to be kind of outdated, and a little unclear. So this is an attempt to help people take their webtop to a whole new level.
To be clear, this is all the work of others, I take no credit, I urge you to hit the thanks button on all the threads I link to. These guys work their butts off. This is simply a guide making it dead simple to do something I know a lot of people want, but isnt exactly super clear. Lets begin.
Remember, guys, it helps if your Rom actually has Webtop. No CM7, no MIUI, No AOSP. Some of the Blur Roms also don't have webtop, but that can be solved by flashing it through these links:
For 2.3.4 Roms http://www.multiupload.com/H4UW3JTL22
For 2.3.5 Roms http://www.multiupload.com/R39VKRPJU5
For 2.3.6 Roms http://www.multiupload.com/3PD53CQRZA
(These are all Fruit Cakes, found here. Go give Sam some love, hit the Thanks button.)
Step 0
Do a Nandroid Backup. Please.
STEP 1
Ok, so first off, youre going to need to run webtop2sd, which can be found here. Run that, follow instructions, and try not to destroy your SD card. (Not that I did. Not that I destroyed 3 of them. No way.) That should take a bit, so be patient. Remember to say thanks to Sogarth, the Webtop Champion.
STEP 2
After that's over and done with, go ahead and start up Webtop, either through a Lapdock or Webtop Hack, it doesn't really matter. I will say that this is kinda pointless to do if you don't have a lapdock, but whatever!
After webtop is started, start the Webtop Configorator (Has the same icon as the Webtop2sd apk). Its going to pop up with some questions, click yes on both of them. Don't panic when it seems like the program freezes, its not frozen, it just takes an unsettlingly long time. Thatll finish up, then will present you with a menu, offering to install LXTerminal, and Synaptic Package Manager. Install both of them, by clicking install. When they finish, close the configorator. Now, this part is weird, open the configorator back up, and make sure that both programs are really installed, by clicking install again, just for good measure. For some reason, Synaptic would say it installed, then not really be installed. So yeah, up to you.
STEP 3
Alright, almost done, but then, not really. As of now, you have all the tools to get XFCE (Or whatever environment you choose, I recommend XFCE4). But right now, dependencies and packages are really really effed up, and its borderline impossible to install anything fun.
So to fix this, go to this thread here. This is a guide to for fixing apt-get dependencies. Show some love to Arvati, hit the thanks button, the guide is really simple, easy to do, and the installer is fully automatic. I recommend following his guide, then coming back here for the rest.
Helpful hint, to save you some thread searching, in the installer, type Yes on all the questions.
STEP 4
Home Stretch! At this point, you're ready to run Synaptic. In LXTerminal, type
Code:
gksu synaptic
We're going to install a couple things here. Well, actually a lot of things, but we're only going to click two things, and the rest will fetch themselves. In the search bar, type in xfce4 (or whatever desktop environment you like). It should be the top of the list, named "xfce4". Click the white box, and hit Mark for Installation. Click Yeah, you want to install the other stuff that comes with it.
After that, search for gedit. (For non linux familiar people, gedit is the linux equivalent of notepad. Its also got some color coding, so you could compare it to Notepad++.) Mark that for installation too, and you're set. Click apply at the top, and wait for that to install.
STEP 5
This final portion follows this guide. Go show your thanks to YellowGTO.
Once that finishes, go back into LXTerminal. Type in
Code:
cd /osh/usr/local/bin/
And after that, type
Code:
sudo gedit start-oshwt-2.sh
Gedit is going to open. Scroll down to where it has some lines that say
Code:
sfalv -i "awm-autostart"
sfalv -i "webtop-wallpaper"
These have to do with the current Window manager. We're not deleting them or removing them, just making them not start when Webtop does.
Put hashes (#) in front of them, so they now look like
Code:
#sfalv -i "awm-autostart"
#sfalv -i "webtop-wallpaper"
After that, add a line at the bottom of the chunk that says
Code:
sfalv -i "startxfce4"
Save and exit.
STEP 6
Go back into LXTerminal and type in
Code:
Startx

And you're done. This has essentially turned your phone and lapdock into an extremely handy netbook. You can install programs through Synaptic or apt-get. From here, you can play around. I recommend doing another Nandroid backup so that you don't accidentally restore to the one without your fancy new webtop.
Thanks a lot man.
Is it the same for lxde? I would like to try both on webtop.

Yes, im theory it should work, just type startlxde instead of startxfce. Post results on performance and usability, id like to know if theres anything that works better than xfce for this.
are your tzdata or samba-common packages broken by any chance?
I had both broken doing the standard wedtop2sd install method (stock ROM), was able to work around tzdata but not samba-common

Ahh I have no idea, it should've been fixed in the dependency fix script. When do you encounter this error?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397583
tzdata would give an error when trying to install most packages from synaptic (openoffice.org is one I'm pretty sure), and samba-common throws an error when trying to install it, if you are trying to install a package to access file shares for example. But you can just try to install samba-common itself and it still doesn't install correctly.
Gnome also works!
After many hours of trial and error while following many of the tutorials, I managed to make gnome work to my liking on my webtop. I can even change themes as you can see on the screen captures.
I followed this tutorial made by aaron.a
I renamed the default gtk-2.0 Webtop theme to gtk-2.0-bak which is located on /osh/usr/share/themes/webtop-theme
I then edited the start-oshwt-1.sh file as follows:
# start OSHWT 1 scripts
update-font.sh
sfalv -w "webdaemon -d -n"
gnome-settings-daemon
# sfalv -i "xscreensaver"
sfalv -i "aiw -d"
sfalv -i "docking_manager"
fcitx
I edited the start-oshwt-2.sh file as follows:
# start OSHWT 2 scripts
# sfalv -i "awn-autostart"
# sfalv -i "webtop-panel"
# sfalv -i "webtop-wallpaper"
sfalv -i "gnome-panel"
sfalv -i "evbridge"
sfalv -i "window_switcher"
sr-test avahi_start &
What's the difference between
sfalv -i "startxfce4"
and
sfalv -i "xfce4-session"
I've been using the latter, but the former makes more sense to me. Though I've not been into doing this for very long.

You're right! wrong thread for this kind of question, I just noticed differences. I'll let you know if I discover the difference.

Is it normal for webtop to be finicky? I experience sometimes that webtop loses the top panel or doesn't wake up properly or just become unstable. Does anyone else experience? I mean, it usually works but sometimes, like one in ten times, webtop is wonky and I have to restart my phone.

Yes, I it's normal.... Just like your desktop pc or laptop, sometimes we need to start fresh with a reboot.

Hey thanks for saying, I wasnt aware it was case sensitive. I guess thats why it was being finicky for me. Webtop as a whole is pretty awkward, Ive just been plugging jokersax's ICS into the lapdock and that works fine. But whatever works, you know?

How do you like jokersax's build with the lapdock? I've been holding out on it since I've bought the MM dock and the Lapdock.
Help.... I'm running DarkSide and the 2.3.6 Webtop. I can't run Webtop2sd 2.0.1 - thea pp throws a "process net.toreishi.webtop2sd has stopped unexpectedly" when I try to open it. Any ideas? I haven't been able to find anything!

I guess just try clearing your cache and dalvik, maybe fix permissions. I may have gone so far as to flash a fruitcake with webtop, but Im not certain. Id read all up on the webtop2sd thread.

Thanks, you rock. Problem solved!
I don't own the phone yet, but been looking around at rooting this phone and seeing what I could get out of it if I did when it turns up. Nothing has really interested me to root the phone. I would of rooted it for CM7 or MUIU roms but as I am getting the Laptop Dock with the phone I wouldn't be able to use the webtop as both of these roms don't have that feature.
When I was looking into the Webtop I came across this post about installing ubuntu apps onto webtop. This did get me interested. Looking into it this seem like it only works with a very dated version of Ubuntu (jaunty) because this was the last version that had armhf support.
As Ubuntu 12.04 was just released I decided to see if this version has got a armhf repo that could be used, and indeed it has.
Code:
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ precise main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ precise-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ precise-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ precise-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ precise-proposed main restricted universe multiverse
The really cool thing about this repo is it has apps like XBMC that should just work with the device.
And then it hit me. This must be the repo that the Ubuntu for Android that Canonical was showing off a few Months ago must be using.
http://youtu.be/N6eEDZva1W8
So I decided to have a dig around the repo when I came across this: abootimg.
Android devices use a special partition format to boot any
operating system on the devices. These boot-images contain
a kernel image, a ramdisk, optionally a 2nd stage boot loader
and the commandline passed to the kernel when booting.
The original mkbootimg from Android can only create these images
where abootimg can also extract and modify them.
Handling android boot images is necessary when bringing other
operating systems to android devices.

So this is a pretty good tell tell sign that this is indeed the Ubuntu for Android that Canonical has been demoing.
As I have said I don't own the device yet but if someone wants to check this out to see if this is indeed the Ubuntu for Android repo that would be awesome.
looks like I can't post links.
Code:
deb ports.ubuntu.com/ precise main restricted universe multiverse
deb ports.ubuntu.com/ precise-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb ports.ubuntu.com/ precise-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb ports.ubuntu.com/ precise-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb ports.ubuntu.com/ precise-proposed main restricted universe multiverse
That is the repo but the http part is missing before ports
This sucks I can't post links. I would of had links to the repos and links to videos and to the XBMC app. I get why XDA does this but I really want to edit the OP so its got all the info.
Anyway I thought someone would of said something by now about this. This would work almost the same way as the [MOD] Full Linux (Debian) inside WebTop does but instead of using the Debian repos it would be using Ubuntu 12.04
I get the phone in a few days and it would be cool if someone could test this out. I am going to try it the second I get the phone but would be nice for someone to confirm what I suspect.
The only concern is whether you can get it to become functional without breaking Moto's modded dependencies that are stuck on Jaunty. I think a number of people have been trying to update to the newest Chrome etc and each time when getting the new repos they've killed their webtops.
I for one would love to get a newer version of Ubuntu running on this baby but information and tutorials don't seem to be forthcoming from the experts here. This might be due to the non-existence of such information, lack of time, or competitiveness. But I would love to see this if you can get it to work.
P.S. I think its really cool that you may have stumbled on the Ubuntu Unity for android on there though!!
It sure be cool to browse contacts and access system settings via unity

If CWM can backup and restore Webtop I will have a look into getting Unity working on the phone.
In Synaptic you can freeze/lock packages, so all I would need to do is workout the list of packages that needs to be locked and not updated.
Once I have worked that out I can make a update script to install unity and lock the packages that need locking.
I will get the phone in about a week and will probably take about 3 days to get unity working.
I will let you lot know how it goes.
I am even thinking about trying razor-qt on it. This should work really well on the phone as the DE was made to run on devices like phones.
It looks like Webtop uses GTK and doesn't use any QT packages. So installing QT apps shouldn't break any dependencies.
There are a lot of QT apps now that will install and won't break anything.
Music Players: spotify-qt and Clemetine
Video Players: VLC
These are just to name a few. If you google QT apps there is a site that list all the avable QT apps that will work with Webtop and won't conflict with any of the GTK apps and dependencies it uses.
Looking forward to it. Good luck.

Just getting the info together for when I start messing around with webtop. Also some people may find the info handy for them to have ago.
Qt-apps
http://qt-apps.org/index.php?xsortmode=high
Razor-Qt
http://www.webupd8.org/2011/12/razor-qt-new-lightweight-desktop.html
Locking Packages
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PinningHowto
Precise armhf Repo
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/armhf/
XBMC Armhf Package
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/quantal/armhf/xbmc
Spotify Qt (they probably don't have a Armhf version so this more and likely won't work)
Code:
# 1. Add this line to your list of repositories by
# editing your /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free
# 2. If you want to verify the downloaded packages,
# you will need to add our public key
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 4E9CFF4E
# 3. Run apt-get update
sudo apt-get update
# 4. Install spotify!
sudo apt-get install spotify-client
Clementine Armhf
http://packages.debian.org/en/sid/armhf/clementine/download
Run:
Code:
sudo apt-get install gdebi gdebi-core
This will install a program that will let you install .deb files by double clicking on them.
The apps that will work on Webtop that won't mess it up are for Armhf and use Qt (not kde-Qt). So just google for that and you should find loads of programs you will be able to run.
If its not a Qt app look at what it depends on.
Using chromium-browser as an example you can see it depends on a lot of packages that has a good chance of breaking the system. This is because its a GTK app. If it was a Qt app it wouldn't depending on as many system files/libs.
Hi, I have been working on such a port for more than a week now.
And I have thrashed the webtop countless times.
I have modified ubuntu.sh so that it loopmounts /osh from an image from the sd card; then it runs the image's original ubuntu.sh. In this way I am not limited to the 800MB size of the original /osh and I can test/swap different images quickly.
I have made a test environment using QEMU (emulating Cortex A9 and Versatile Express board) and I borrowed a recent kernel and initrd from a Linaro image.
I've been testing various distros: Archlinux for Raspberry Pi, Raspbian (which I modded into a full ARMv7a Wheezy by changing the repos), Linaro 12.04 (heavy and slow IMHO), the original Jaunty 9.04 for armel. The last one just to allow me to check the differences with the Moto's distro, file by file.
My QEMU setup is also able to boot GenTop2 and even the original webtop. But I have also an alternative setup using proot and qemu in user mode which e.g. allows me to run ARM-compiled commands directly inside a loopmounted webtop image.
In GenTop2 and in my Wheezy attempts I've also tried using a more recent, ARMHF compiled Tegra Xorg, see
http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2854 but the only thing I got from it is to display a hardware cursor on the phone - my lapdock would stay blank no matter how I play with xorg.conf.
Although in fairness I'm not a dev and still have a lot to learn. I'm just a very stubborn person. And I'm close to giving up.
My second best option so far is to run GenTop2 from a partition on my external SD. Amazing work that GenTop2 is although I'm not a fan of Gentoo - because heavy compiling and too many small writes (at "emerge sync" time) inevitably shorten the life of the phone and SD card IMHO.
Here a link for you to start (in case you don't have it already):
Analysis of webtop - https://sites.google.com/site/androidnothize/nebtop/webtop
For emulating ARM v7a with QEMU - https://wiki.linaro.org/PeterMaydell/QemuVersatileExpress
Also to boot the original webtop in QEMU, the key is to take that extra getty from /etc/event.d/console out of the way (just delete the file), then change the password for root and adas (so you can get in) - the latter task can be performed e.g. using my qemu user mode way.
good luck and good night
I don't know if this is relevant but, here is a version of Ubuntu natty "webtop construction kit": http://mafipulation.org/blagoblig/linux/atrix/index.html#webtop-kit
I have managed to run it on Blurred and CM7 roms (manually). I had to heavily edit xorg.conf to make it display on my external monitor, but there were issues with the mouse and keyboard (the movements were mirroring on the phone as well), text-antialiasing, etc.
Also, apt-get seems to be a little broken, as I have only managed to successfully install lxde but not xfce, and many other packages.
Will this help?

Oh yes it helps indeed.
The piece of information I was missing about the broken glibc is fundamental, and probably explain why some of my Debian Wheezy attempts were crashing the phone so badly that I needed to remove the battery before restart.
I'm going to put my hands on this yes yes.
I'll look into xorg.conf and apt-get problems, maybe I get some idea.
Thanks!
G
Bionic port
I am very interested in the progress of this thread, as the addition of the newer version should allow XBMC, which would the the killer app for me that would allow me to completely replace my netbook with my phone.
But, I have a Bionic which uses the TI OMAP4 SoC.
If you work this out, I guess it should port, as long as the OMAP4 driver is in an accessible repository and xorg.conf is modified appropriately?
There is already an ARM/OMAP4 image here:
xxxxx]https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/OmapDesktopInstallxxxxx
(remove the xxs as I still can't post links either)
seems like somehow integrating the webtop binaries into that image and using the abootimg to create it on the phone would be a possible approach?
I have some Linux skills, but I am not a dev, so this may be terribly naive!
This is all very interesting. I cant wait until this gets running on our phones. This webtop environment is a pretty special thing that moto has going on here, but I wonder, can the webtop or something of a similar nature be done on other phones? I image it could very well be, other phones certainly have the power and space requirements. I would be willing to pay quite a bit to get this running on my galaxy s2.
It would be awesome to have FULL Ubuntu 12 on our webtop !
Well, actual webtop is cool but the interface is worse than Unity.
Not sure if any of you developers that have been trying to get Precise to work by messing with the XORG but I think KHOL tried but was unsuccessful and instead decided to boot it after getting into webtop...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370176
Maybe that might be of some help?
I would love to know if anyone has gotten any where with this looks very promising I wish I could help but know very little about programming althought im trying to learn.
