Hello fellow xda members! I think many of you know about T-Mobile's data throttling and what a nuance it may be. I would like to hear your thoughts on this and even possible solutions to this. Thanks!

I thought this was only an issue if you went over the 5GB monthly cap?
That is true. I seem to go over that limit every other month. I'm currently throttled and I have dial up speeds

In that case there really isn't much you can do because they are limiting it on their end. It's kind of like a cable provider capping out your cable connection.
Only suggestion we can give is to try to use WiFi more often and disable your Data Connection whenever your not really using it. If you have an email account setup to auto download then that may be why your going over the cap so quickly.

So there were rumors about the hotspot feature becoming a service... Mine was working at first but for the past couple of weeks I couldn't get it to work. Any info would be greatly appreciated...
Mine still works just fine

Did you exceed your data limit? You could be getting throttled.
I have used 7g data only because my home internet and cable had been down. Had to steam the Jazz games! Although online it says my speeds will be reduced they have not

wifi hotspot?
this is still free? I heard they were charging for it. What about usb tether?
Yes still free I have not seen any charges on my account

Any one know any way of forcing a phone to go on extended network? Anything I can change in the service menu or anything?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Isn't that the same as roaming? And may I ask why?
Yes. And because I'm in the military and the tech school I'm at everyone is on the same tower so my 3g download speed is 12-16kb/s
The upload is like 1mbps. It sucks. when my phone goes into extended network I get almost 1mbps download.

We've had this question before and I don't think we ever found a way...
Hi all
I plan to buy a kindle fire, but I don't have wifi at home, so my question is can I connect the kindle fire to my phone portable hot spot?
Thank you
Ps my phone is not rooted
Yes you can. There's built in hotspot on your MT4G. It's in settings.

Keep in mind that tethering does count against your total data usage. So if you go over you will be stuck at EDGE speeds on the fire and on the phone.
And if you are unrooted using the stock ROM T-Mobile might packet sniff to see what browser you are using and if they know it's not one the MT4G uses they can block tethering remotely.
I can play on 360 online on my phone. I know for sure you can do that im to cheap to get home internet

I'm assuming you either have 5gb or unlimited data per month... How much data do you notice being used after you play online??

T-Mobile doesn't have truly unlimited data. they throttle after certain points.
Yea I'm well aware of that I wasn't sure of his carrier tho. I was just wondering how much data is typically used after using wifi tether on a xbox360

it takes about 3 weeks to hit the 5gb limit so im stuck playing live with my samsung epic 4g touch lol but my mytouch works better then my friends internet no glitches when im playin mw3
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
cant you share your computers internet connection with your mytouch in internet-pass through (can be toggled when connecting via usb to computer) . i believe you just need to install the drivers that come on the usb. after you put the phone on internet pass-through i think you can enable a hotspot , pretty muching turning your phone into a router.
i have never tryed this yet , due to my usb port going bad , it has physical damage and can only charge now , so sorry that i cannot verify if this works

Got a text message that I have been blocked from using wifi tether. On a fully unlimited plan with t-mobile. I realize that normally you have to pay for wifi tether, but I am on CM10.1 so I didn't think they would be able to tell? I had Verizon in the past with wifi tether on my Galaxy Nexus and used it a lot without a problem. Is t-mobile more strict or what?

I've tethered plenty of times on Tmobile with no issues, don't even bother to change the useragent on my browser when I do. Sounds like you've been doing it either very frequently or using excessive bandwidth and they caught on to you. Knowing it's a service they charge extra for you coulda been more careful .

Oh yeah they can tell. I got a push text (not a normal one) on my cm10.1 yelling at me about tethering, only after 30 seconds of viewing a webpage. I was able to use my hidemyass vpn and not a peep.

According to Data Usage in Settings (I assume it is all reported under Tethering and portable hot spot? Or does it also report as browser?):
This month: 140MB
Last month: 334MB

I'm wondering with the 500mb of tethering included with unlimited if they are going to be doing good less random checks. Have you thought about switching to or making sure your on the new plan?

Use a vpn tmobile packet sniffs your browsers user agent so say chrome for Windows pops up on their tower that's how they find out

Change your browser's "User Agent" (addon/plugin) to android or some other mobile device. That way, Tmo will think you're using data on your mobile and you won't get flagged for hotspot tethering.

Thanks guys, I've installed an add on to Chrome on my desktop and changed by user agent to Chrome/Nexus 4. Tested it out on a wired connection and most web sites seem to be going to the mobile version, so I think it is working.
However, it looks like as I was experimenting trying to get around the block, they have completely disabled tether all together. Got another text that said wifi tether was been blocked. I can connect, but before I was at least getting a t-moble splash page. Now I get no internet connection at all. Hopefully they re-enable in a few days or by next billing cycle.
Are you using an app to tether or built in method

Does anyone know if Koush's tether app gets around this?
And what about using a VPN, is that a solid solution?

It should be or it could be my luck, my idea is. If tmobile can't see your packets then they can't tell what you're doing

So just today I made the switch to at&t from sprint. Very happy so far, minus what I had to put down (let's not go there)
But I got the 1gb plan and was wondering what everyone else has. cause I'm on the edge of deciding wheth 1gb was enough. I guess it depends on usage of course. But while I was on sprint I usually barely go over 1.2 gb.
I guess I just have to be extra careful. Do you guys have any thoughts or tips?

2gb just to be safe...
I am grandfathered into the unlimited plan...
It depends on your usage. My MIL had the 200MB plan and never had a problem.
My advice: Don't stream... anything. Use wifi as much as possible. Set your data usage alert so you know your usage before you go over.
I would say it depends on your previous phone. I just switched to AT&T to get my S4 as well (and regrettably but knowingly lost my unlimited plan) With my last device a Verizon HTC Incredible 2 (a 3g device on an unusualy slow Verizon connection), I would average 1.5GB a month 3-4. If I had to be away from WiFi.
I noticed with the GS4 being much faster and the faster LTE speeds, I can browse and pull data faster. If it weren't for my WiFi connections I'd be over 4GB already and I've had my S4 for 2 weeks now. I am sharing 4GB between 2 lines.
So I would definitly think about your previous phone and wireless speed in comparison to your S4.

I also kicked up juice defender for when my phone is off. Hopefully if it getd to close I'll be able to bump it up to the 3gb plan

I wouldn't use JD might use background data no? I stopped using JD or task killers long ago they make things worse. Like said above use WiFi as much as possible and set your mobile data reminder under data usage to like 800mb it will then warn you. Also pretty sure you can set a. Actual data limit in there too...

I have 2GB and never really even come close to 1GB. Only time I've gone over 1GB is if I watch netflix on data. Otherwise I do web browsing and listen to pandora a lot.

I know I own the app but stopped using it because it is worse for battery and data consumption vs being diligent and manually changing things. Or using NFC tags to turn things on/off

I have unlimited and usually use ~2 - 2.5 GB a month (I stream Plex and Music often). Some months have gotten over ~5GB... but as suggested use Wifi if your concern about data and do not stream.
