All, I couldn't find this amongst recent posts: Though we all know that 4G allows us to talk and browse at the same time (ala Att's iPhone), I was surprised that this works even with a very poor signal. I tried tonight inside my house (don't get me started on why 4G works well outside the house but not inside). Speed test was @ .55 mbs, yet I was still able. I'm pretty sure most of you already knew this, but I hope that someone finds this info. useful. Just be sure to watch the battery!
Yeah, basically, as long as you have a usable connection, you can do it. It may be slower and it may eat your battery faster if the signal is weak, but in terms of whether or not you can talk and browse at the same time, you either are connected or you aren't.

Yea even on the phone the internet will be fast. This is because T-Mobile and AT&T use the 3G network for both voice and data simultaneously, as for Sprint's 4G (WiMax) is more like WiFi, it isn't used for voice so its purpose is strictly to provide some very fast mobile internet
If you're in your house though, it's probably faster to just use WiFi, which will let you talk and surf as well.

Actually I do use wifi at home due to the speed. Hopefully, this would be of use elsewhere for people like myself who don't want to disconnect to take a phone call.
sorry for the double post
There's a way to talk and have Internet access...over CDMA.
Gingerbread's SIP ability + GVCallback + Sipgate One + Google Voice.
Surprisingly, the call quality for me is better than regular calls, and if my cell signal is weak, I can just go into Airplane Mode and turn on WiFi. Ta-da!

Its retarded isn't it? Thanks for the info though.
The 2.5GHz band that's used for WiMAX is absolutely terrible for building penetration. At least you get a good signal outside. At my house, it's a weak signal in the wintertime that fades completely during the summer thanks to ... leaves on the trees!
Yeah I found this out when I was down in Cali downloading a rom from my phone on 4g. The wifey called at it continued to download when I was talking.

This is generally not true. On GSM 3G devices, typically voice will use the normal GSM 2G voice channel and the 3G side will be data only when using both at the same time. They're completely different radios, just like CDMA and 4G on our devices.

Ok I use have a Wing and ive never gotten a data plan because of the price. I finaly broke down and got a G1 cause there was more power under the hood plus anyone could develop on it being open. Well i got a deal on one and the price was decent so I got a data plan bundled with my original plan. Ive never used a data connection before so when I got home I started playing with it. I wasnt all that impresed with the connection speeds, Its almost like its on a crappy dial-up connection. The Youtube app is pretty much useless unless your on wifi it only plays about 2sec's before it buffers for a minute and then plays another 2sec's. Now is this normal? Is this what 3g really is? Am I missing a bigger picture here?. Heres some of the things i have done to try and get some sort of improvement.
Screwed around with APN's.
Tryed it in diffrent areas around the state.
Flashed it with 1.5 which i do believe came with a new radio.
Any input would be greatly appreciated, Im not putting down the phone as a matter of fact i love it, Im just not too fond of this connection technology.
I was dealing with some of the same issues.I installed Adrenaline and my connection seems way better
How is the coverage in you area? I've never had any problems with my 3G on my G1, always between 2 and 3 MBit connection...... Are you sure your carrier supports UMTS/HSDPA? Without those 3G is worth nothing..... Also make sure you are stationary when testing speeds.
Coverage is great ive never lost a 3g connection its just slow as hell and almost is useless to me, My carrier is T-mobile and wether or not it is supported i dont have a clue as to find out if it is.
well my test speed stationary was 38.6 Kbit\s with full bars, Doesnt even come close to your speeds. Any other Ideas?
When you're using your mobile network, does the 3G symbol show in the notification bar? Or does it say E? If it says E and you're getting those speeds then those are about right for the EDGE network. However, if you're connected with the 3G symbol next to the link, then those speeds are too slow. If it says E, make sure you don't have 2G network only checked under settings>wireless>mobile network. If that's not checked, then its likely you just don't have 3G in your area.
nope the notification is always 3G
Meh my edge is 10kb download, I would kill for 3g...
It takes miniutes to load pages and seconds to load google.

It's not the connection technology - it's either a problem with your phone, or just that your carriers network isn't very good and/or doesn't have the necessary backbone to cope with the amount of traffic generated by its subscribers. Given that T-Mobiles 3G network in the US isn't exactly pervasive, I'd hedge my bets that it is a network issue.
Here in the UK, I live in a very rural area, and I get 2.4mbps on my G1 via T-Mobile UK. Can't really tell the difference between being on WiFi and 3G given the actual processing speed of the device.
Of course, we're very lucky here in the sense that we are a small country (thing of Georgia and Florida combined) with a high population density. This means it is comparatively simple to get blanket 3G coverage (say 95% ish at least in terms of population).
Regards,
Dave
I never really said it was the connection technology, Its just that my first impression with 3g has been unfavorable, Damn I just sold my wing and i didnt even think of trying out the 3G on it to see if anything was better. Ohh and sadly when i do get edge Its great and alot more faster which is odd to say but to face the facts i can watch youtube videos with edge with no problem. Ill probley reflash it with official 1.5 and if i get the same results then is there a way to dumb down the browser to make it almost txt based without any image and uneeded script loading to atleast make browsing the web alittle more likeable.

Theoretically, EDGE maxes out at 192kbps and "standard" UMTS 3G at 384kbps. With HSDPA, the theoretical maximum is 7.2mbps, but most carriers don't support speeds such as this yet (T-Mobile UK supposedly at 4.5mbps).
So, if you are getting better performance over EDGE than you are over 3G, and assuming that T-Mobile uses the same backhaul network for both 3G and EDGE traffic, it seems more likely to me that you may have a problem device. I'd suggest a trip to a T-Mobile retail location may help, since they should be able to compare your experience with other devices.
Regards,
Dave
Well ill check out some nearby stores and see if they have working display models to try it out and cross refrence them to see if they compare the same. To get alittle off topic here so far i have had one problem with the device I played Retro defense from the market (Game BTW) and i played it for 2 hours straight. After 2 hours of gameplay that phone was hotter than hell which was kinda scarey and It just shut off blinking red on the notification LED so i figured the phone can actually overheat. I can reproduce this over and over only with that game. So if that hasnt happend to anyone then its a possibility that your assumption might be right that my device might have a defect. But its kind of a big crossover between overheating and connection difficulty.
T-Mobile in my area is shown as the best they have on their coverage map, but my calls always get dropped
I'm still under my 30 days and I want them to somehow boost up my reception because I seriously want to keep the HD2.
It might just be me, but when I turn off my 3G signal, my 2G coverage is almost perfect, but I still get occasional dropped calls. Is it just me?
And also, do any of those signal booster stickers work? Should I try foil?
I am open to all comment and suggestions..thanks
i usually leave my phone on GSM (2g) through the band properties because it saves battery, and yes i do get more bars. in some locations my 3g or H connection is just as strong.
Not sure about boosters, i heard that the antenna is located at the base of the phone though.
stickers are a scam.
I can't believe those stickers are still available.
Dropped Calls are almost inevitable with today's technology.
2G and 3G coverage are different. if you have trouble with 3G at your location, simply turn it off in order to ensure a stronger connection and more stability during phone calls.

Tmobile is still rolling out it's 3g coverage, so it makes sense that their 3g is not nearly as available as 2g.
Furthermore, Tmobile's 2G frequencies are lower than 3G so they penetrate better.

Call them and tell them your problem. T-Mobile's help desk has always been amazing for me and perhaps they know something that you don't.
If all else fails, you can use the call to drop your contract without penalties. I'd much rather have an older phone that works than a new one that doesn't!

That's just the basic physics of RF signals...the lower the frequency, the higher the penetration capability (as a general rule of thumb). Same generally holds true for sound frequencies as well.
I don't get dropped calls at all on T-Mobile here in NY (AT&T is a different story).
However, especially indoros, 2G signal is generally stronger than 3G.

Just to give you some very simple insight (you can always google it if you'd like detail explanation; it's actually quite simple, I just don't want to have to type all of it). In simplest terms, Tmobile 3g runs on 1700 and 2100 which is much higher then its 2g which runs on 850. Lower frequencies don't go as far, but have better penetration.
If you'd like another way to think about it, think of when you hear someone playing music from a good stereo system in a building. You'll likely only be able to hear/feel the bass because it's able to penetrate the walls and you won't hear the the actual lyrics/treble because that's higher frequencies.
Hope this helps
T-Mobile 2G runs on PCS, always has and always will.
The reason for 3G not being as strong can be a number of things, the reception on the HD2 really doesn't seem to be good and the 3G network buildout is incomplete at the moment as mentioned before in this thread.

I've only dropped calls when in my poor reception apartment. It seems to be worse at keeping a signal than my HTC Dream.
However it still bugs me that the HD2 doesn't scan or update quick enough when I exit the metro. It might say I have full 3g, but it won't let me call for a few minutes. Sometimes it will decide to disconnect from the signal and reconnect even when I haven't moved to a weaker area and it's still full 3g bars. I'm also in NYC/Manhattan.
update
The data services with this phone are also going under maintenance soon, basically the software of the phone has a defect within the radio, HTC is releasing an update on May 17th to help fix this, you might see some luck having a better connection this way, but everyone is right about the different types of signals, the fact lies that there are 2 towers for each spot, the 2G network is more established where the 3G towers might not have as good of a penetration because they use a higher frequency.
Confirmation
My apartment has terrible reception. My signal will go out for about 5 mins then come back with only 1-2 bars. I turned off 3G and now my 2G signal remains around 1-3 bars with no blackouts so far (3 days).
Its just a minor hassle to remember to switch back to 3G when I go out.

Hey guys. Does anyone have experience with Sprint 4G right now? Speeds? Reliability? I love the EVO and want to know what 4G might be like using this device.
Don't expect much off the bat, to be honest. 2-10mbps, spotty service, etc. It's like 3G was when that was rolled out, it's going to take time to iron things out.
It probably depends on where you live. In Corpus Christi, I can great speeds, up to 20 mbs, in certain parts of town and less than 1 in others.
I have an Intel WiMAX card in my notebook and an Overdrive device. I always get considerably better speeds using my WiMAX card than I do the Overdrive. The WiMAX connects using Clear's service, but it is the same service that Sprint's Overdrive connects to.

How is the latency? Is it good for gaming or better for just browsing?
I used Clears WiMax service at home for a couple weeks. The speeds were so so but latency was so horrible that I could not use it for voip or xbox live at all. The best part of it was at midnight or so every night (when I get home from work and need it the most) the service would go down for maintenance for 1-3 hours.
p.s. WiMax is not 4G

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G
Wimax as it stands now is not "4G" in the certification sense. Then again, neither is LTE. The 4G certification stands at 100mbps, Wimax2 and LTE Advanced will have the 4G certs. LTE and Wimax are technically called 3.9G, as the basis of the tech will lead into 4g.
That being said, Verizon and AT&T aren't going to say anything, because they're doing the same damn thing.

i am in Ft Worth texas.. it has had 4G/wimax (whatever) as one of the test cities. I got the overdrive device 3 weeks ago.
I live in the suburbs and work near downtown.
at both locations I only get 20% signal strength. And the speed is about double what I get on 3G. well the 3G signal strength was also about 20-30% too!!!
sometimes, i can get 40% and see the speed hit 1.2-1.5mbs. but that is for a very short time, maybe a min or two. 95% of the time i am 20%.. and sometime i loose all signal!!! I have tried to download larger files 100mb or higher, but it fails because, before I can finish the download it will loose signal and I have to start over. So i have no faith in the stability of this tech, at this time. It is good for casual internet stuff, but for work, large files, time sensitive issues, I would not bet on it. They need more towers!!!!!!
4g is great u just have to be withone one mile of a 4g enabled tower in order to get real 4g service

It seems pretty good. My step son has his Xbox360 connected and plays Call of Duty all the time. He says there is no lag at all. He was getting lag when connected to our Road Runner account.
It does make a difference on where you are and where you place the modem. He puts the modem in the window.

I'm sorry, what's so funny with that statement? I find it hard to believe that the latency is lower with a 4g connection, but I donno... I guess I just don't get it.
Long time AT&T customer probably switching to Sprint, been eyeing the Epic..
If I get a voice call, is it possible (if I'm using a BT headset or speakerphone) to fire up a web browser on it and use that while I'm in-call? To look things up, or whatever?
If it can't do that, are there any other Sprint phones that can (EVO, for example?)
Thanks!
if i remember right, you can use data and voice only when you are connected onto 4G and WIFI, but not 3G. i have not tested this out yet to confirm but i remember reading that somewhere if i read it right. i also came from att (iphone) and being able to use data (3G) and voice at the same time was a major plus. ill have to try it out though later on my epic.
Yes u can use data while on a call only if you are on WiFi or 4g. Tested and verified.

Some might say it is a "limitation", however is it the reason why cdma networks do not suffer from dropped calls like gsm networks do.
For more information, you can check out this rather lengthy post about why cdma is better than gsm.

is my phone defect? why would internet get stuck loading?
4G is still a new system. It's buggy and the signal is awkward. You're fine in one spot but move two steps to the left and you won't have it anymore. Just gotta hope that where you're standing has reception.
I don't actually understand how you get internet at all if it's not wireless. I suppose I could wikipedia that.
anyway, can I go down to 3G or 2G if I am not getting internet on 4G?
Yea, just turn off the 4g option. You'll go to 3g.
I bet it's verzion the most, "Verizon Wireless has the nation’s fastest, most reliable 4G network". It's starting too make me a bit mad, but any way I hope turning the 4g off works for you.
I have been geting the same crap so yea.
not Verizon it's Rogers. I live in Canada currently.
Hi
Is it clear
Rogers will not work everywhere in canada. It has verrrry low coverage.
Sorry
Verizon customer with 4G issues
I am almost always in 4G areas with Verizon, Fayetteville and Charlotte, NC, and Charleston, SC. The speeds are generally pretty good (varies between 14 Mbps to 6, starting to trend lower more consistently with more customers hopping on). I will generally lose signal on the lower floor of any multi-story building. But there seem to be noticeable outages, both from my phone (Samsung Droid Charge) and from the network.
I can generally tell which one it is by restarting my phone, so that may be a good way to diagnose whether the outages you're experiencing are hardware or network based. I can vouch for the fact that 4G coverage in Fayetteville has almost daily down times that vary from about 5-10 minutes.
Wow I thought 4G freezing was just a SideKick 4G problem.
My fix is to just turn mobile data off then back on.
