Hello,
I installed Android on my HD2, worked perfectly for 2 weeks. But my microSD was only 2GB, so I buyed a new one.
Kingston class 4 8gb microSD. Putted everything just on the new SD card, didn't changed anything! Formatted it also to FAT32.
Now the problem is that Android is VERY slow with getting out of standby, takes sometimes 10 seconds. I get a black screen for 10 seconds and then Android comes up.
Also starting up Android takes ages and it sometimes just freezes or gives a blue screen.
Has this something to do with Android or is the microSD card broken in a way? I can still move/delete files on the microSD card.
Anyone got at solution?
Thanks
Did you try a different build? Perhaps try Mdeejay rEVOlution build, fastest build i've used so far, very very fast, smooth and stable. Also try updating your radio.
I bet there are several utilities to test the read and write speeds on your microSD card. You'll need a cardreader in your pc to do that, trying it through WM6 won't work because the USB will be the one controlling the max speeds.
I hope this helps a lot of people struggling with the speed of android running off SD.
My suggestion is that the card size, and not just the card speed plays an important part in the speed at which android runs...
My Evidence. I first installed various builds on a variety of Sandisk 2GB and 4GB Class 2 cards. They all ran super fast... I mean no lag at all, ever. It might as well have been a Desire HD. Being that i wanted more space I used my 16GB Sandisk Class 2 that I have been using for WM, reformatted it and installed android. It was cripplingly slow. Unusable in fact. (i tried reformat/reinstall a couple of times before giving up). I then invested in a Class 4 16GB and installed the same build. Not surprisingly this was faster, usable but still not as fast as it was on the 4GB Class 2. I am going to go back the the 4GB card unfortunately until NAND arrives.

Thanks for the reply!
First i'm going to test the Mdeejay rEVOlution build, hopefully it will run smooth and fast. If not, i'm gonna send back my 8GB card and get a new 4GB class 4 card.
At the moment I'm running Froyostone 3.2, works now perfectly with the 2GB microSDcard.
I will post the results.

I totally agree with this, although I cannot figure out why.
I tested with two almost identical cards, both Samsung class 4, one 2Gb, one 8Gb, formatted FAT32 64k clusters via the same memory card reader/pc. The 2Gb one whizzed along with the build I'm running now, the 8Gb one occassionally stuttered and stalled. Seems odd to me, unless fragmentation comes into play maybe?
The only reason I have stuck with the 8Gb is for my music. Oh how I'd love to stick with my 2Gb card for the speed and have a second SD slot for my music.
This is an observation across several different builds with Hastrain 8.5.x and MDJ 7-8 kernels:
ScanDisk Class 2 MicroSD -- runs smooth without any problems
Any Class 10 MicroSD that i have tried -- frequent wake from sleep screen delays and occaionals BSoD
I have tried MDG Revolution 1.7, CoreDroid, Topia Series with Hastrain 8.5.x and MDJ 7-8 kernels.
The problem with Class 10 microSD cards is consistent and dissapears instantly after switching back to a Class 2 microSD.
I am not sure why, perhapps it has something to do with power consumption.
It would be great is Hastrain or MDJ could look into this problem.
Any feedback would be appreciated!
Thanks
That's not your card. That happens to all class cards on all builds. Some people say its fixed but that is straight BS. Like you, I wish it was fixed once and for all.
Maybe your class 10 card is error. Use flash card software to test it (in reading/writing testing).
I think i have found the problem. When i come back
From standby the wlan stopped and then comes back.
I tested it i deactivated wlan and test it no freezes when
Wlan is activated it freezes.
Is the class 10 also a sandisk card?

I have one Kingmax class 10 16G and one Toshiba class 2 16G. I got the same problem only when using the class 10 ,especially on the phone call page.

I have the same problem like you. Everytime I tried to use my wintec calss 10 sd card for the android, the system will lag and have BSoD. When it wake up from sleep mode, it is very laggy. So I think the HD2 Android does not support using the Calss 10 Card.
PS. I tried the class 10 in window Vista but it doesn't have any problem. Therefore, I am sure it's not the card problem.
Perform a full disk check and also a benchmark.
Compare it to your Class 2 card.
Then proceed to copy 2 gig of data to it. If it is class 10 it should sustain 10MB/sec for the entire copy. If not you may see 10 at the start but then it slowly gets slower. Also the card will get very hot.
Its starting to get very difficult to get genuine cards. I have a number of Class 10's. One from ebay and another 2 from local stores. All are fakes.
I have a class 4 which is the best I have got so far. Can copy GB's to it and it stays constant for the whole copy. Others start of good but 1/2 way the card is really hot and only getting 50kb/sec
In my experience, only 3 card brands work, sandisk, samsung and toshiba. Kingmax, wintec and patriot didn't. I guess the class didn't matter.

Its device-dependent.
My old HD2 had loads of lag when "waking up" but since I broke it and got a new one, I have had almost no wake-up lag. The longest I ever have to wait for the screen to come on is 2-3 seconds, and usually its less.
Perhaps different microSD cards exacerbate the problem, but the underlying problem is in your HD2 itself. I use a Class 6 card myself.
Been using a class 10 card ever since I got my HD2 in the summer. Works fine here..
It's a Kingston class 10 SD, dunno if that helps

I have 3 sdcards
Sandisk 8GB Class 6 (write ca. 7mb/s) freezing
Sandisk 8GB Class 4 (write ca. 5mb/s) freezing
Sandisk 8GB Class 2 (write ca. 2.5mb/s) testing know !!! I give in few hours feedback.
I also experience slow wake ups with both of my class 6 cards as compared to my class 2 16 gig. On my class 2, wake up is instant. On my class 6 cards (4gig and 8gig), wake time is approximately 3 to 5 seconds. I really wish someone could figure this out because of the difference in file transfer speeds; my class 2 is almost unbearable.
It would be interesting if you could all try using this build over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870518
Darkstone's build puts everything into RAM so that your SD card shouldn't matter. Why don't you report back and tell us if that fixes your crashing/sleep problems?

I think the key factor is to stay with quality name brand cards. My class 2 is Sandisk and my class 6 4/8gig are off brand. I'm going to try different format settings and see what I can come up with. I post back if I find anything significant.

I think you are all forgetting my post.
The SAME sd card can be fast in one HD2 and crap in another HD2.
hi
probably your sd card is abnormal cause some of the kingston and other cards are made with errors,i had a similar sd card from kingston i dont know whatever i did with it formatted it multiple times it never booted an
android build,i booted in ubuntu and used disk utility it had a lot of errors then googled and came to find out that there were batches of kingston cards with similar errors coz 1 tech support guy in an fabrication organisation found it it and they sent all the batch of their cards to kingston for replacement which kingston did,i am using the card in garmin gps as storage i think these error cards see the batch number and see other original cards they are slightly different with their numbers as well as letters you can google it and find it out.thats why be careful from where you buy it.
try using disk utility in ubuntu you may find out what is wrong with it call the company and try to replace it
Fake cards
What I was alluding to in my previous post was all the name brand cards are suffering have fakes. Right down to holograms etc on the boxes.
Even retailers are getting caught out as the shipments are getting hijacked on the way and good cards are being swapped for fakes.
Very simply you can take a class 2 card and change the clock to run at high speed. Runs great for the few first seconds however quickly overheats and starts to fail with write errors etc.
I have "Genuine" Sandisk and Kingston cards here. Both bench great but when copying a large amount of data to it it gets hotter and hotter. Eventually crawling at ridiculous speeds. Keep pushing it and I start getting write errors.
Finally picked up a genuine Kingston. Only a class 4 but after 4GB sustained writes it is still only warm and pushing 4.1mb/sec.
Compared to my Sandisk (With hologram) Class 8 which can only do 200kb/sec after 1GB of data. Eventually will fail before 2gb ram.

Ok i have tested the Class 2 card. It freezes too.
I find the freezing comes after ~10min. Before 10min.
Is nothing from this cards freez the lockscreen.
I think wlan is major problem. With wlan off is nothing freezing,
Mobile data i have not tested.
wlan = wifi ?
As some people reported this sd card will cause multiple lags and slow down market place and app installing, others are saying its working fine for them.
Does someone know about a workaround?
Well I have a Kingstone 16GB card and I can confirm I am experiencing some lags while browsing & listening to music, i'm unsure of the installing speed issue since everyone on WP7 experience slow sync and slow deployment of XAP files, but it is terribly slow.
thinking on getting a new one just for WP7...
just test it without sd card for some time, its such a big difference
the question is if it can be fixed in some way or if its necessary to buy a completly new sd card
i've spent last two nights with installing wp7 on my kingston 8gb class 4 and my sandisk 2gb (hd2-bulk) over and over... my result: the 8gb kingston card is so much slower... not to speak about the annoying lags in marketplaas as described above and the multiple reboots on startup (up to 8 times till it boots all the way through to homescreen!) now i'm forced to stay on 2gb until a solution is found, or someone will sponsor a compatible 8gb card (or larger) to me

At least the 2GB sandisk works for you, i got 2 of them and none are even recognized
Well I have 2 more cards
one is a generic 4GB i tested WP7 with which was great! but I didn't cofirm if the slowdowns occur after installing apps and adding music, I only synced about 10 songs before deciding to install WP7 on my kingston one, so I can't confirm that it was better, it just didn't lag, I can't know if the lag is an issue after loading things onto the SD card.
The one SD card I have is another Kingston 8 GB, same model like my 16GB, so it would be stupid to even try it since i've got everything configured for now on my 16GB.
I'm thinking about getting a Sandisk 16GB but i'm afraid i'll just throw money and this issues will appear again because they are size related...
The thing is, Does everyone experince slow downs when listenning to music? (which is the main thing I do with my phone) or that WP7 doesn't load apps sometimes? or when sometimes you swype left for the list and the icons of the applications that are insatlled on the SD card are still loading (grey image with a star).
Facebook is slow.
Because if this is the base performance for everyone i'll just stay with my Kingston.
It just seems that everything that's related to the SD card is working on and off.
The Kingston 4GB class 4 I have is very laggy, big difference with it out. I bought one of those SD cards that where approved as WP7 compatible by Sandisk.
My HD2 is in repair at the moment getting a new digitizer so I can't test it until it comes back.

im experiencing the same, but as i said its probably related to the kingston sd card, its not the base performance
everything works awesomely fast without the sd card inserted...
Deploying applications takes ages, music in Zune stutters, games lag... It's clearly the bad performance of our Kingston...
I have 4 MicroSD :
sandisk 2gig class4
Sandisk 2gig class2
Kingston 4gig class2
Kingston 4gig class6
Sandisk 2gig class2 is the best.Class4 drain more battery and is more lag.
I have 2 MicroSD
kingston 16Go Class 2
kingston 8Go Class 4
16 c2 is perfect
8 c4 is lag and slowdown
Inersting but it seems all the laggy SD's are class 4, while class 2 works good, mine is a class 4 as well.
I have 2 MicroSD
Samsung 8GB Class 2 ( lag and slowdown )
Nokia 4GB Class 6 ( really fast and good battery )
I have a 16Gb Kingston class 4 and magldr doesn't even recognize it let alone wm7 I think its down to that, like the battery issues most are having, in time these will be fixed
I confirm, don't use Kingston class4 (I'll try to get a refund from amazon :/)
No problem with my sandisk class2
same here, 8GB class 4 Kingston doesn't even boot anything :-(
Yea I have a Kingston class 4 16gb that magldr doesn't even read, I have just put a post in the HD2 general about it asking about it

um yes, thanks but no thanks. I have a compatible sd card. if it isn't i wouldnt be able to use wp7.
my card works and has always worked. even with android i had no problem.
So you're telling me you have super fast flick-ing action? I highly doubt it.
Anyone else with a better suggestion?
Yeah, I have one - change your SD card.
I have great scrolling, no lag at all. The SD card makes a huge difference. When I was using a class 4 kingston, wp7 was laggy and didn't run that well... it still ran and used the card, though. But now using a class 2 sandisk, wp7 runs as smooth as butter... no lag and battery life is much improved. What kind of card do you have? Cards with good random access speed is what you want for wp7... usually lower class cards have better random access speed than higher class cards. Class 2 sandisk seem to work consistently well, but I guess some people have had issues. But even cards that are same class and same brand, but have different manufacturing numbers or serial numbers will be very different performance wise.
i have a sandisk 8GB class 4. it has never had any problem.
are you guys telling me that by downgrading to a class 2, i may have a faster WP7 OS?
that is ridiculous!
can anyone confirm this?
I'm still using Class 4
I will backup my data and test this tomorrow.

You might... it really depends on the sd card. Sandisk class 2 cards made at one time can be very different than sandisk class 2 cards made 6 months later. Same with class 4 or with any sd card out there. When it comes to the random access speed, it can vary greatly... manufacturers don't test this speed and don't aim to make consistent scores of that. But usually the tricks that manufacturers do to get better sequential write scores on their chips end up hurting the random access speeds. That's why more class 2 cards are compatible and work better with wp7 than class 4, 6 and 10 cards. And if you are having lag, then that means you can definitely do better, because I have no lag at all at this point... maybe every once in a while I'll get a little lag here or there, but overall, it's VERY smooth. I haven't installed my apps yet... only like 10 or so apps from the market, and only copied one music album over so far, so maybe I'll get more lag when more is installed... not sure. I have 21gb partitioned over for wp7 on my sandisk class 2 32gb card. When I was using a kingston class 4, I definitely had a lot of lags and I hadn't even installed anything at that point. But I have heard that sandisk class 4 works good, too, but, like I said, when and what factory the chips were produced in can make a big difference with the random access speed which is what wp7 needs to be smooth.

Lag ???? WP7 is smooth as butter, this is why I'm still using WP7 over LAGGY Android.
ps: I'm using Sandisk 2gig class 2
It's all to do with your micro SD card, my old Samsung 8gb card, ran ok, but would somtimes lag, not load marketplace, things would crash and the occassional autoreboot as well, so I ordered one of the Microsoft recommended sandisk 8 GB ultra microsd cards, not a single lag, no crashes, things run so smooth and fast its really quiet amazing. How ever many times and different ways you format your card if its not the right one it will never run wp7 smoothly

You should take the class 2 sandisk back and order a class 2 sandisk from somewhere else... most class 2 sandisks work great with wp7. But like I said in several other posts, just because the brand and class are the same, doesn't mean the card will perform the same. They don't test the random access speed on cards so it's not consistent on cards, and it's random access speed that matters with wp7. I was just testing my cards today... I have one class 2 16gb sandisk with great random access speed and works great in wp7, and I have another class 2 sandisk that has bad random access speed and makes wp7 laggy. The read and write speeds were the same on the cards, though. My class 2 32gb sandisk has good random access speed, and my class 4 32gb sandisk I just got yesterday has even better, but my old class 4 sandisk 4gb card has terrible random access speed. My class 4 32gb kingston and my class 6 8gb kingston both have terrible random access speed as well.
Cards of same class from same manufacturer can have different chips made in different factories depending on when and where they were made. Also, a lot of the time, the chips the they make to have higher sequential read and write speeds will have worse random access speeds, so you will probably have better luck running wp7 with a class 2 than with a class 6 or 10. Microsoft reported this from their testing of memory cards for wp7. This doesn't necessarily mean a class 4 or 6 card won't work just as good or better than some class 2 cards, and it doesn't necessarily mean a class 2 card will work well. The problem is that the random access speed is not rated for cards so it's not kept consistent on cards. But at this time, it seems the class 2 sandisk seem to have the most consistent high random access speeds, but again, doesn't mean all of them will. Like I said, I have a class 2 16gb sandisk that doesn't work well (which is the one I bought retail), but the class 2 16gb sandisk that came with my phone works very well. Also, I just got a new class 4 sandisk 32gb card which I haven't tried for wp7 yet, but from benchmarking the card, it looks like it will work very well. I'm gonna test it with wp7 tonight.
So Ive been using the 16gb Class 2 sd card that came with my HD2 for WP7 and I havent really had any problems with it. Occasionally it reboots for no reason, but aside from that, its perfect. However, my friend just gave me his 4gb Class 4 card. Should I keep using the 16gb or reset my phone with the faster 4gb?
simple test, all sd cards work differently
my Nokia 4GB Class 6 is better than may Sandisk 16GB Class 2
Xbox Live Installation: ( only the installation without download )
Nokia 4GB Class 6: 1:23 minutes
Sandisk 16GB Class 2: 9:41 minutes

Class 2 cards usually work better for wp7. Actually class means nothing when it comes to wp7... you want good random access speed for wp7 to run smooth. Many times, the tricks that manufacturers do to their cards to get higher sequential write speeds will actually reduce the random access speed. They don't keep the random access speed consistent on any of their cards as that speed isn't rated, so even cards of the same brand and class can differ greatly from batch to batch. A card made one day may run wp7 well while the same card made a month later may not. So far it seems class 2 sandisk are the most consistent in keeping good random access speed, so if you are going for a card for wp7, go for class 2 sandisk with model numbers ending in A11M. If you already have a card that works well, no reason to switch unless you want to change the size, because there's no way to guarantee a card will work well until it's tested.
