hero + ubuntu...do they play well?

so last night my pc crashed and i thought i lost everything, i was able to recover my windows 7 install, thank god. anyways if i couldn't of i was going to install the new ubuntu that just came out. my question is:
is there htc sync for linux?
will ubuntu detect the hero on usb mode?
i assume there is a android sdk & guide to setup on ubuntu?
do you find building roms & developing for the hero easier on linux?

Ubuntu is amazing. The newest version was released yesterday, 10.04 -- and it's great! I've dual booted (Windows 7 and Ubuntu) for some time now and realistically once you try Linux, you'll most likely use it as your main OS.
Developing, theming, syncing, and anything you can do in Windows with the HERO can be done in Linux (Ubuntu) -- I know, because I do it!
You should definitely give Ubuntu a try, at least try a Live CD, you won't be disappointed.

Or, if you use VMWare, I have a Virtual Machine already compiled and running Ubuntu (not the newset) but it should be setup already.
Edit....Actually, that may have been before I had to reinstall windows. Anyways, I'll check and see what I still have lol.

Ubuntu is definitely the way to go. I'd never go back. Everything works for me.

I use Ubuntu exclusively now. Wont go back to Winblows. Also, you can use Wubi installer if you dont want to remove your Windows install. Wubi will install Ubuntu beside Windows and give you the option to dual boot...

yea, I'm a wubi convert. If linux played better with my laptop, I'd go all the way, if ya know what I mean... lol
anyways, two problems I have (although will be trying 10.04 later this weekend to see if they're fixed) was plugging in headphones not automatically turning off speakers (could turn down speaker volume manually though) and finding a decent visualization program for listening to music at work (I use whitecap on windows right now). Minor annoyances, but hey.

im gonna set up a wubi install tonight, i still love windows 7 too much but after last night im compelled to format but it takes too damn long.

I wonder if with Wubi if you can install the newest Ubuntu or if you are tied down to specific versions?

wubi will come on all ubuntu versions. it's included in the iso you download.

1. No HTC Sync for Linux
2. Ubuntu will detect the Hero (the 1.5-based Roms had an additional benefit...when you mount the SD card, you would also be able to directly modify the ext partition if you were using Apps2SD...market apps such as splitter will perform the same function in any Rom).
3. There is an Android SDK for Linux and several guides that will tell you how to set it up on Ubuntu.
4. Development, I think, is easier since both run the Linux OS.

Wait...there's an HTC Sync for Linux (not that it really matters, since I can care less...but if so, I may have stuck my foot in my mouth again. Can't get this taste of Tinactin out of my mouth.)

Ad hoc networking is spotty in Ubuntu...at least 9.04 and 9.10. Until i install the 10.04 final I cant say if it still sucks. They changed a bunch of stuff regarding networking support, so It might be fixed now.Takes a lot of extra work to get wireless tethering to work.
My bluetooth hardware in my computers wont see the phone and it connects but never pairs. Android has always had lackluster bluetooth support anyways. That might be my hardware in my systems though.
Im ok with wired tethering though anyway so I havent made a lot of effort on that front. Thats my only major gripe.
Almost every little quirky thing can be fixed if you do come across problems, but these problems are fewer and fewer since 8.04 .
Ubuntu forums are amazingly helpful (if you follow the rules and dont ask stupid ass questions)

i do have an ubuntu netbook i have used twice due to my wife is a thief! thats why so excited to try this. beats buying another laptop.

i am running crunchbang 9.04 (great for older machines and underpowered netbooks) which is a very sleek, very fast distro based off of ubunutu 9.04 and wifi tethering works perfectly without any fussing with it.
for a distro, ubuntu is a great starting point but personally it is too bloated and feels too much like windows.
btw- crunchbang 10 alpha release is very solid (especially for an alpha build) and works very well on netbooks. the support community for it is fantastic (which is very important for me- read: i am not a dev). check out distrowatch.

Unrevoked doesn't see aria - Ubuntu 10.04

Hi there,
It's probably something simple, but most things are easy when you know how!
Unrevoked does not see my Aria.
Running Unrevoked 3.32 under Ubuntu 10.04.
The USB debugging is ON in the phone.
I have tried to run reflash from the terminal using 'sudo reflash' but it will not run that way, doesn't even start.
Any ideas?
(the last time I was here, I was getting the windows 6 hack for my Audiovox Starcom 6700! I still have it by the way and it still works as a pocket PC just fine.)

I upgraded the rom to 1.25.502.12 tonight, hope that didn't kill this method.

Either run the program with root permissions, or add appropriate udev rules to the file /etc/rules.d/51-android.rules. Instructions are available at the Android Developers website.
So, I probably would have figured it all out anyhow...
Maybe this will help someone else.

[Q] Droid X on Mac Gingerbread Help

Ok so I have a Droid X with the OTA gingerbread installed. I want to get back and root. Is there some sort of guide for MAC in order to do this? I'm pretty noobish. I rooted my eris and just got my droid X today so hoping I can do this tonight. I don't want to have to install windows or linux or anything on my mac.

As a Mac user, I strongly recommend VirtualBox (or the virtualization software of your choosing) and an Ubuntu install. Then use sbf_flash. Works like a charm. Faster than RSDLite in Windwos and more reliable IMHO. You might be able to get sbf_flash to work with a Linux VM, but it wasn't worth the effort for me since I already had an Ubuntu VM.

As a total noob lets say. Could you give me a step by step so I don't mess this up? Also could I use a bootable linux usb drive?

I used VirtualBox and Ubuntu. I suppose you can use a bootable Linux USB drive it you'd like, but I find it easier just to have VirtualBox installed. I've got a couple of different OS images that I use sporadically.
Step 1: Install VirtualBox
Step 2: Install Ubuntu in Virtualbox

Gingerbread doesn't have a root currently. Only real option to root the OTA is SBF to 2.2, then root that using something such as z4root (which is simply a .apk you save and install on your phone then click the "root" button in the application). Then install the team black hat version of gingerbread

If you don't have a lot to lose as tthough you just got your phone, you can boot into recovery and wipe your phone to factory settings. That's the least complex way to do it. And none of this requires any specific computer operating system.

Really? This will work? I can just restore back to factory settings, re fill out my google account, then go from there?
Why don't people do this then, doesn't the SBF and rooting and all that stuff wipe your phone anyways?

Odd, never had a problem here. What's the error? Alternatives are Parellels and VMware. You can always succumb to the pressure of Windows and use Boot Camp if you don't like the idea of using a VM. Personally, I don't like the idea of Boot Camp, but to each their own.

Ok. I thought it would factory reset to 2.2 if that was the state he purchased the phone in.
In any case. After you get it to 2.2, root it using a one-click root such as z4root then install the TBH/p3 Gingerbread.

Factory reset is the same as wiping data in cwm

All very amusing considering there's no reason to load a linux vm; sbf_flash will run on a mac.

If SOMEONE could give me step by step instructions on how to do this sbf flash on my mac then (OR UBUNTU) then that would be helpful. Everything is vague and I'm not going to try and figure this out on my own then brick my new droid x.

As a Mac Genius ;-) I recommend just using the Mac without any emulator. sbf_flash works flawlessly running in native Mac, Just follow the instructions for Linux by making the script executable and then running with sudo command.

Let's see ...
go find an sbf file; these aren't normally distributed to customers, you may have to search.
download sbf_flash
open a terminal and navigate to the directory where you've downloaded the above two files.
run "chmod +x sbf_flash" to set the program as executable
run "./sbf_flash filename.sbf" using the correct filename to start the reflash process.
connect the phone and perform whatever steps are required to boot the phone into the bootloader. (usually powering on while holding a key combo)
I'll leave it to someone else to spell out each one of those steps in agonizing detail. It's the exact same regardless of linux or mac.
Worst case is your battery dies in the middle of reflashing, and you're forced to buy an external charger to recharge the battery so you can restart the reflash.

How do I navigate to the folder in terminal?

cd is the change directory command in unix/terminal. I say put everything you need on the desktop that way its easy to navigate to it. If you google the DoRoot sequence you can follow those steps to navigate to your file, something like cd yourmacusername/desktop/filename if i remember correctly and then execute the file.

Good to know. I already had an Ubuntu VM configured so I never bothered trying sbf_flash in OS X. Thanks for the tip.

Rooting via Parallels on Mac?

Has anyone been able to successfully root their Nexus 7 on a Mac using Parallels? Or VM Ware? Both rooting methods in the development section are Windows only, so a little cautious about trying it on a virtual machine. Any help would be appreciated.

Agreed, forget VM solutions on OS X.
Install the Mac sdk, open up Terminal and have a play with adb and fastboot, plenty of guides around for the details

I tried using one click root (written for windows), with XP on my iMac via VMWare. It did not work. The problem relates to tablet could not reconnect in time to virtual machine in between reboots.
I ended up going to a Windows laptop, and it worked.

if you're comfortable with adb & fastboot, can search and read, you dont need one clicks or windows.....

I use Parallels on my Mac ALL the time and have never had an issue. In fact, if you have multiple devices and worry about conflicting drivers simply copying the VM and having one for each device is the way to go. Do it all the time and I have MANY devices from different manufactures.
Edit.... BTW ... I used parallels to s-off an HTC Rezound which had many steps where the device would reboot. Re-connecting to the VM was never an issue for me.

I rooted LGL21 using Parallels on Macbook(OS X)
I'm using Parallels 9 on Macbook(OS X) and ther is Windows7 Pro.
I made trial and error using Android SDK and LG's ADB, and the beginning did not reach well.
Windows was not able to find LGL21.
but I changed USBcable 1m to 10cm
But Windows came to be able to find LGL21 when I changed a USBcable 1m to 10cm.
I thought the cause to be a ADB driver, but might be a problem of the hardware.
When you change hardware and try it, how about?
However, I'd changed both the hardware and the ADB at the same time, and the connection of the USB port changed ! I confirm an exact cause from now on !

Nexus 7 - how to on linux

Hello All,
I've read that linux does not open up the file system of nexus 7 when connected? Is that right? if yes, how can one transfer files to nexus 7?
Am waiting on my device which should arrive in few days. I really dont want to go some where else to copy my files or use apps to transfer files over the air. My phone is android and linux shows me the sd card folder right away after plugging in...
Also, can you guys please point me towards howto on rooting my device while on linux? I have seen wndows has one click method which is pretty awesome. I realize we might not have one click methods in linux, am willing to do it the hardway too..just need some direction.
Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks for taking your time.

I have no problems loading the file system on my Arch System. However, I personally rooted using Windows and the One-Click. Since all it does is use adb to push files onto the system, it is 100% possible to root and unlock using Linux. Just make sure you have the Android SDK installed. Follow this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1741395 for the acutal rooting

Thanks for taking you time out. When you say you had no problem on arch, are you saying the file explorer just showed the nexus files? were you able to just copy and paste stuff into nexus?

By "showing Nexus files" do you mean the SD card? Linux supports PTP / MTP so this won't be a problem. You won't be able to directly view any other files without some other server installed on the Nexus, such as NFS or CIFS. As already stated, if you install the Android SDK, you will be able to root the device using adb / fastboot shell commands.

I think it depends on which distribution you are using. Ubuntu doesn't have mtp support by default.

Easy to get it though.

Yes, i am able to mount my internal storage in Arch if that's what you are asking. As stated before, you must have MTD support in your distro. Since Mint is based on Ubuntu, you may have to do some work. Sorry, not really sure how in Ubuntu.
