So I did the RUU flash for 2nd time so I could update with the MR, and this time I skipped the google sync options at startup.
And let me tell ya, that alone has made my phone 10x faster!!! WTF!?!?! most noticeable when dialing, but the keyborad rotates faster, the browser loads pages faster, etc...
I am thinking its mainly because of the large number of contacts, since I use the gmail app not the phone's. So my new goal is to limit the amount of stuff that gets stuffed into the phone by google. I haven't decided how I am going to do it but I dont need all 500 contacts in my phone thats for sure.
Try it out for yourself.
Go in to your gmail contacts and create a group only for the people you want to actually have on your phone. I have over 1000 in gmail but only about 50 in my phone. I created a group called "people i talked to" and assigned those people to that group.
Then on your phone go in to People and scroll over to groups and only pick the "people i talk to" group and uncheck anything else. Done.
Nice. I will be doing that.

um...There isn't a checkbox in the people group page for me, just a name of the group and a "group" icon next to it. Also, I still have 328 contacts listed, even after making the group. I'm going to just go to the "view" options in menu and turn off google contacts altogether. Any other suggestions, or am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks!

I did it off the top of my head. My phone is in the middle of flashing right now. Heh. Let me double check for you once it flashes and boots up. I'll edit this post.

He meant go into your contacts on the Gmail web site. There should already be a group called My Contacts. Move the contacts you actually talk to into that group.
Then, on your phone, go to People, then go to the Groups tab. Hit Menu and then Sync Groups. Uncheck all of them except My Contacts.
Done.

Yup. Thanks jonnythan. I guess that's where the confusion was. You first create the group and assign the contacts on gmail's website. And then on your phone you enable that group and disable the other groups in People < Groups (tab) < Menu (button) < Sync Groups
I don't even have a single google contact and only use my exchange contacts. Phone is still slow w/o a custom rom...
Sounds to me like you've loaded the new firmware. A lot of people are claiming these are benefits of the firmware. Faster page loads, faster keyboard flip etc....
I don't use google contacts either, but i've never had a problem with slownes..

I finally got this figured out, but there's one step to add to your process in order to get it to work. I originally had 328 contacts (i never use gmail contacts anyway :/)
Even after choosing sync groups and choosing the "people I talk to" group which had 65 contacts, going back to the main people app and going to Menu --> View I still saw Google(328) and it was checked. To finish it, I unchecked google, chose ok, and then all contacts were removed. I went back in by Menu --> View and checked it again. Now it says Google (65.)
Thanks everyone! Good tip anyway, I was getting pissed at all of those extra email contacts I don't use.

Yup lol. Once you add it on the site you won't see it until it syncs on your phone.
Come on guys, we live in the "NOW" age. Patience is a lost virtue.
j/k, I'm actually really patient, I think it's just because it's friday. That, or I'm just in a good mood to make excuses
thanks
thanks guys this really helped out alot
I'm able to join the Facebook contacts with my Google contacts, but no matter what I do, it always seems to change my contact's name to display what they have on their Facebook. For example, my mom and dad both have Facebook accounts, and after joining thier profiles, it doesn't show them as "Mom" and "Dad", but as their names. It's kind of annoying, because now whenever I try to find them, I have to look under their names. Has anybody else figured out a way around this?
how to solve this pproblem??

There's no way around this. Two things however. You can put your parents in your favorites list... so you'll have quick access to them. Second, if you start typing Mom or Dad in Contacts, it will still bring up your parents... the Facebook info doesn't overwrite "Mom" and "Dad"... just changes how they appear in Contacts.

Agreed. I'm sure at some point they'll build in an option to allow you to pick which name is dominant.
Hi All,
My desire is set to use only gmail contacts list in PEOPLE (checked and doubledhecked, facebook is NOT ticked)
However, when i click the phone button to make a call the list that appears behind the 0-9 keys contains my facebook contacts as well as my gmail contacts.
I've looked far and wide to be able to disable the facebook contacts with number to display behind the 0-9 keys but without success..
Bear in mind I still want to sync facebook notifications, just NOT contact list.
Could you please guide me the right way on this?
TL;DR Facebook contacts behind 0-9 keys, I only want PEOPLE in that list.
Thanks
EDIT: SOLVED, removed the FriendStream widget.
no solution at this time that i know of other than to NOT sync them in the first place, but as that is not what you want, there is no solution for your case.
the view option in people only hides them in people, not anywhere else.
Now yes, this is a damn stupid state of affairs, but it's what we're currently stuck with.
Or I don't know how to use it properly. I go into my contact list and hit the groups tab. I create a new group and hit save. It doesn't show up. I then try to create it again and it says it already exists, but still doesn't show up.
Even the default groups that show up (google and something else) I can't figure out how to add someone to that group. Does anyone know how to get this function to work properly?
I haven't got it to work either.
Bump
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
To add member on the default group, all your contacts must be stored in the phone memory. If its not there, then you need to export your contacts first then import them back but make sure you import them to the phone memory.
But be aware that you will have multiple entries on your phone book especially when it was originally synced to gmail.
It's a vexing issue and a bit complex to fix manually. But...there's an app for that..
search the Market for "Groupy"
I have to say that sucks. when an android with google doesnt grap your contacts the way you have them on your google account.. that just sucks.
this is the first time I have ever complained about this phone. or maybe its samsung that I should be complaining about. but one of the reasons I started using android was the easy way to manage contact information. that is just something that should not be messed with.
k.. done *****in
What I found after doing a factory reset was that *if* you manually made a few contacts on the phone and placed them in categories and *then* sync'd google contacts they would import correctly.
But still it's an annoyance easily fixed by "Groupy" in about a minute.

Absolutely! The Contacts app that Samsung installed in place of the regular Android Contacts app totally hoses the Google-based contacts. I am swamped by unwanted download of a "contact" item for anyone who ever mailed my GMail address, and Google contact groups are not supported. The stock Android Contacts app handled this gracefully, allowing configuration of which groups of Google contacts get downloaded and synced. But Samsung tried to de-Google Contacts, and screwed everything up.
Is there any hope of reinstalling or renabling the original Android Contacts app instead (hopefully without rooting the phone)? Perhaps a third-party solution?
Try third-party app called Contacts Evolved
I have been exploring third-party contact apps in Market.
At first blush, the free app called Contacts Evolved seems to help here. It does segregate the contacts downloaded from Google according to the Google/GMail groups (including starred contacts) into handy tabs. The spurious contacts such as those who just happened to send you mail will still be there, but if you keep your real Google contacts organized into groups, the groups will be respected and displayed separately in the app.
I don't know of any way to disable or uninstall the brain-dead Samsung Contacts app, which I believe handles the syncing. But AFAIK, I never have to use it and can use Contacts Evolved instead.
EDIT: On the downside, Contacts Evolved seems a little buggy. There are force-close issues.
I have all my contacts on google and they sync with my i9000 including the pictures and numbers and everything else. My contacts are organized in groups in google. The problem is: These group names do not show up on the phone.
I think I found out why: Because of Samsung's faulty implementation of the contacts app.
Check it like this:
Create a new group called 'test' in GMail and put a new contact in it. Wait for the sync. Now the contact quite surely _is_ on the phone.
Now try to create a group on the phone with the name 'test'.
==> Not possible, error says "Group name already in use".
The other way round does not work either. If you create a group on the phone, it's not synced to GMail, because the grouping function seems limited to the phone.
I found out that, using other Android phones, you can select "sync groups" in your google sync preferences. This is just not implemented on the i9000.
I'm really wondering why on earth Samsung did this.
Any ideas how this could be solved?
I tried aContacts, but it's more a workaround than a solution.
Can we replace the Samsung contacts app with the stock Android one?
This seems to be a Samsung related issue according to other threats on the website. Indeed very anoying. I'm hoping on a fix from Samsung here very soon as well!
syncing groups?!
Mine doesn't offer that option. The gmail contact shows up in my contacts, but there is no group information attached. SUCK
