Hey guys, ive had my tab since release now and its going great, problem is my girl friend is wanting to get one now "sigh" but she dosn't really need all the bells and whistles that the tab has.
I did a quick google and everything else out there seems to be rubbish :/, maybe im just biased because of the tab.
Can anyone recommend a good alternative under $300?
it needs:
7inch-10inch
definitely wifi (3G aswell would be nice)
powerful enough to browse the web/read pdfs/ebooks/ play simple games like angry birds, maybe the game loft golf game)
Thats about it really, any help would be great thanks!
You probably want a Nook Color from the US.

Dave

Maybe there u find what u are looking http://www.dynamism.com/c/top-notebooks/top-tablets
Well, I think that actually very very little comes close to what the TAB offers.
7 Inch is definitely a really nice size, but all the other 7 inchers have 800x480 displays, which is no good. Well no good for reading comics or watching HD movies..
Unfortuneately, the rest really don't cut the mustard. Not yet anyway.. But I suppose if I had to get one, it might be new 7 Inch Dell but I've heard the screen is super rubbish.. blahhh! Come on DELL!
Hmmm...
Brand new from Amazom £399 - not bad.

Except for the Nook Color, which has a 1024x600 IPS display!
True, you have to hack it to get a the complete Android experience, but at U$D 249, it's a pretty good buy.
Even though I've got a Tab, I'm considering buying a Nook Color to hack around with.

I don't have mine yet but I love the fact that it fits in my pocket and not my iPad.
I agree. Ability to have 2 free hands is a god send.
Movies look awesome man. I've been playing games as well and I love it. On the cons side, I don't like that the browser takes you to the mobile version of the websites.
There is so much to like. Everything feels a lot more natural. Typing, browsing navigation. Yum

I would have to say portability is the best quality. The biggest con for me is I can do everything on my EVO that the Tab can do. Im going to fully use my 29days to figure out if I want it or not.
7" is a great form factor for a tablet (sorry Steve). Soon there will be more competition in this field, but the build quality, large battery and full-featureness of the Samsung Galaxy Tab will be hard to match. I can see a few ways to improve the Tab: display with better viewing angles, refersh rate and lower power consumption, dual core Tegra 2 processor (although the software would need to take advantage of it), better camera, built-in software (driver and app) for FM radio chipset, worldwide integrated DMB TV tuner (currently only in some parts of the world), HDMI stand included with tablet (currently an expensive accessory), standard mini USB plug, . . . But otherwise the Tab is a pretty great device as it is now

The phone
Everything really. It really is 'one device does all'
When I'm on support duty, I need to lug around a netboot 'just in case' as well as my phone of course. Now can do it all from one device.
7" IS perfect. For me. (LCD Density app on the market helps get that little extra wiggle room, well recommended).
GF has an iPad that she enjoys, but she's getting frustrated by it's lack of flash more and more. Whilst she just uses it for email/browsing Perez whilst watching telly, it's been great. When she needs to do a bit of research, it's limitations are becoming clear. I've not had that issue. I've been able todo everything I need from it. (vnc'ing back to my linux box to handle work stuff, I have no problems with).
Also been able to setup my Everquest account to be able to be logged in and checked. Using vnc->Flash. It's slow, but it works. When I've tried todo that on the iPad, I've run into that whole 'no, you're not allowed todo that'. With the Tab (well, Android in general really), it's kinda the Unix philosophy, lots of little tools/apps that you can string together to let you work the way YOU want to.
Cons
hmm... Still annoyed that voice isn't as standard on the US models. That's just... well, stupid. Having to flash the euro rom works around it, but it's annoying to lose 3G for that. Unless it gets resolved properly soon (stock rom, and some app/mobile.bin that lets me use the mostly standard rom and get 3G AND get updates easily), I might look into the Skype/Google Voice solution that others have mentioned.
Wouldn't mind an earpiece so those rare moments I don't have the bluetooth headset, I can hold it up, and not mind looking silly. Maybe. Not sure. I'd like to have at least had the option.
The thing I really I love about my Tab is that it has turned my HTC Desire into just a phone, and my PC into something I just use during the day for work.
The Tab is now my primary method for internet and multimedia consumption when I'm not at my desk working.
Regards,
Dave

The fact that it's small and I can stop downloading apps on my g1 that dosen't do well with many apps lol. Also I like that its not extremely light and dosen't feel too fragile.

Oh, and things I like about it...
What isn't to like? (Obviously trying to ignore US carriers' decisions to remove voice calling capability -- as that is a monster FAIL.)
This is one sweet piece of hardware. Actually, strike that. That doesn't do it justice.
This is... ahem... the coolest piece of gadgetry I have ever owned to-date. (Again, obviously trying to ignore the no-voice-calling horse**** -- and no, I can't leave that caveat off.)

Heh agreed
Apple appeals to less intelligent people that thinks its fashion.
Imo the 10" tabs like ipad are to big and heavy to function well in the hands. It tire out my hands and you have to hold it in one hand to reach everything on the screen.
Its to big to have it with you all time and dont fit in the pocket. I can just take with me the laptop instead in the nice little bag.
I have the tab with me all the time. I dont have a phone with me anymore. It has perfect size and isnt to heavy. The screen resulotion does surfing better then on a phone and the 7" makes it easyer to see whats on it.
The sgt works well for chatting, atleast i can type fast as hell on it now. Almost the same as a regular keyboard.
Pretty entertaining games. Getting a little sick of Angry Birds now but there lots of fun game with pretty sweet 3D graphics.
Surfing works good altho the browser that came with the tab is a little stuttery. I use Opera most of the time now wich is super smooth for me and when i need flash to work or something isnt working correct in Opera i use Dolphin HD.
The screen is pretty good and watchin movies, reading books and magazines works great.
It feels realy good and sturdy even with the plastic back.
The battery seems to have no problem keeping up a whole day. I have bluetooth on the whole time, msn up and chatting alot, playing and surfing alot. Sitting next to my machine on my work and passing time with my little cute tab. And mine is going to get better because its still new. On my phone the battery time got a whole lot better after a while.
Hmm... what more, what more... Its just a sweet and imo perfect device.
The best is the screen of course. I love, love the big screen. At my office there are some hardcore iPad lovers and some Galaxy fans. And I have the biggest Galaxy screen!
I really like the brightness of the colors as well, everything looks so fresh and new. I get a lot of compliments from people around me, everybody wants to hold it. For me the 7inch was the deciding factor, 10inch is way too big for me, with my woman hands (at 1.60 m I don't have large hands). Working with the keyboard at landscape I can type really fast with just two fingers.
Considering I used to own WM devices before, I have to say I really, really like the Android platform. So I am not sure, that is the main reason but everything works really fast and downloads are easy.
I keep telling everybody that the Tab is a woman device, I can hold it in one hand, wonderful.
I think I haven't been this excited about a device for a long, long time.
It's 7" and fits right in one hand, the screen looks great, 2 cameras, I can type pretty fast with 2 fingers now, or swype. I do a lot of my writing on it while watching movie. And I can use it as a phone if I so desire.
Plus it's the best tablet that I can stick into my pocket and be on the go. Now I got to figure out whether I go for the T-Mobile or Verizon version first.
@dukins
Same here, I don't have the Tab, & just sold my Evo, but it's like...... 7" isn't that much for something that is just a bigger Evo LOL, would really prefer 10"
But since I'm going to WP7, I may get one eventually, if not an Archos & flash it to get the official market. Who knows, maybe I'll end up with an iPad, I really don't know. 7" just doesn't do it for me since every smartphone with a touch screen I've owned has been 3.7" to 4.3"
& it's like, now they are already talking about their new Galaxy Tab. I think I'll wait for the thinner, faster version then.
Camera zoom would be nice too. I mean I can live without 720p recording.. I guess that's what smartphones are for instead of smarttabs?
should i buy a vega because i have always fancied it but never put down the cash.
So what is it like to use?
Does the tegra 2 really preform in games?
and what are the chances of getting honeycomb when it source code is released because i see u have cm7 allready which is promising and honeycomb would make it a definate yes!!
cheers, Adam
For the price the advent vega is great. The tegra chipset is more than powerful enough to handle everyday activities, nice and smooth. Game performance is good, but with future updates i think it will be even quicker. Honeycomb will come to are device, i have no doubt on that. Its just will it be official or a custom rom from one of are (or other great mobile site) Great dev's
I have had mine since Christmas, and i have no regrets.
Hard to say if YOU should buy it...
I have no regrets but I can see myself going for a higher res tablet once those come out (the currently announced honeycomb tablets).
The screen is the only real disadvantage of this tablet, regarding viewing angles and perhaps resolution. (About android, android 2.2 is ok for tablets... not the best but works just fine. Really hope honeycomb will become available though.)
But for regular browsing, watching videos, listening to some music, checking some email, playing the occasional game (I'm not a gamer though) it's just fine and imo certainly worth the money.
Lo there,
the vega is a nice "cheap" piece of kit.
Do not expect to have an ipad like experience though, and out the box its a bit poo.
You definitly have to be prepared to have a fiddle to get the best out of it.
Rgds

cheers guys
i have heard it is a bit ram out of the box but i dont mind custom romming it it would be the second thing i do after turn it on!
I do really hope it can get honeycomb because that would make it a real i pad competitor for £250
It does seem well suited to honeycomb since it has no physical buttons, tegera 2, and a ten inch display which is what the xoom and galay pad are. but alot more moneys!
Do not underestimate the effect of the screen. You use a tablet interacting through an user interface with a screen. The UI here is Android, which is top... but the screen is bottom. Seriously. I would have shelled out 60 euro extra for a better screen.

really? what else is their out their for that price and whats so bad about it the viewing angles?
The bad viewing angles make tasks like reading or watching videos while lying on bed a more straining task than it ought to. Plus, they strain the eyes more than better screens. That said, no tablet offers what the AV gives for its value, especially for mod-savvy use like the folks here or in MoDaCo.
Cheers thats what seems to be the general consensus. I cant justify the big price tags my self and i think i could live with pore viewing angles.
Plus im hopeful for honecome for this which shouldnt be too hard to build from source code since it has no cellular capabilities or gps which will mean their are less things to fix. WiFi would probably be an issue but fixable and personally i dont care about bluetooth.
if it gets this it will realy add value because the only niggles seem to be the screen and software!
well I have the galaxy tab...but miss the large screen of the ipad..(gave to son for xmas)....so I ordered a vega and it arrives wed morning..so will see if it does me...obviously will have to mod it..will just try the add on first...market etc...then try it out for a week and if happy enough will sell the galaxy tab..

Gotta say, ive had no issues with viewing angles at all in real world use.
Its definatly not great, especially when comared to an ipad, but i use m vega to read books, graphic novels, watch videos etc and unless youre a quality nut, the vega is perfectly useable, for the price.
I think of the vega as more of a kit or scratchbuilt pad rather than a finely honed apple product so i put up with its shortcomings.
Rgds

The viewing angles are a bit dodgy but bareablyr, tbh I Havnt touched ny vega for over 2 months, I just don't really have a use for it right now, but as soon as honeycomb offically/gets ported onto the vega I'm going to start from scratch on this beast, start bringing it to work, etc...
Right now its just not 100% for me, something is missing, I don't know what apart from honeycombskis.
By the way, in no way do I regret buying it though, under the bareable screen is a beast begging to be unleashed, just a matter of time...PLUS the support for the product from officials is outatanding, I have seen the best customer support and its still going...they actually listen to their customers which is a good strategy!

I agree with the customer service statement - just have a look over at MoDaCo!
Also, I can't wait for honeycomb too. It'll be great. If you want a preview just search for the sdk on google, bing etc.
I'm currently owning a Nook Color. I wanted it for reading books, reading pdfs (I can't find a lagfree Android pdf Reader!), browsing web and playing around.
I'm not happy with it. I'm from Germany, I payed about 300€ all in all for it with taxes and shipping costs.
I simply miss that I can't get any accessoires for it, that I don't have mobile Internet and the touchscreen makes problems.
I don't have a cellphone currently, I'm thinking about getting a case that let's me use my iPod as cellphone. But somehow I'd rather have a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, because I don't like it to have a device that wasn't ment to be an tablet and really is not a good tablet and together with the case for the iPod (70€) the SGT isn't a lot more expensive.
I think that I would still get about 200-250€ for my NC. I saw the Samsung Galaxy Tab for 350-400€on ebay.de.
What do you Samsung Galaxy Tab owners think, should I sell my NC to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab or should I stick with it?
PS: can one actually connect the tab to a TV with a video cable?
Well, I think you will get a lot more with the Galaxy Tab.
Overall I find it very usable and I enjoy it. Files in PDF can be read using Adobe reader and many others. I got Documents to Go and it gives me ability to read and edit MS format documents as well.
The Tab has everything that regular laptop has, plus GPS, compass, and cellular phone. You can get maps and navigation any time your need. GPS works better than on any phone because of the better antenna. Signal to noise ratio is more than 10 times higher. It should be noted that it supports Wifi at 5GHz in addition to 2.4GHz.
You can also make and receive phone calls while listening music through Bluetooth.
Overall Nook has a small fraction of the Tab's functionality.
Connecting the Tab to TV requires HDMI multimedia dock and HDMI cable with a small form factor connector on the dock side. You can also use Wifi streaming.
I would definitely vote for the Tab.
I'm in the DC area, i'm selling my galaxy tab for $350
Hi Diemex,
I use my galaxy tab in exactly the way you describe, I'm a postgrad student so I read ALOT of pdf files on my tab using Repligo to add comments to them and dropbox to sync with my desktop. I use Miren browser for 90% of my home web browsing and pulse reader for getting the news at Uni.
The tab is really stable on the modaco rom, but development isn't as fast as the NC, sometimes I wish there was more development, then I remind myself that functionality wise the tab has all the bases covered. When better kit comes along that the devs favour I will upgrade once the price falls. Until then the tab ticks all the boxes for me.
Edit: I'm waiting for an RCA cable to.arrive so that I can plug it into a T.V. via a scart adaptor.
The Tab is a good step up from the NC.
The rca cables are cool and allow me to stream movies and play games via the tab.

To respond to thre OP--the size and hardware are its best attributes.
The software is a total nightmare. It is slow, no updates in sight, missed key presses ... I am annoyed. I am not even trying to do anything complicated with it! No rooting, no cooked roms, just stock device.
It's like they are pushing crap and once they sell the stock they move on to other versions.
Save your money. Samsung built this thing well but it is half-baked and the developent on it has just fizzled out on this site. I have very limited skills or I would be porting and helping.
Oh, the Nook Color thing. KEEP IT. It is much better quality and the development for it is still rockin. Hello, it has a Honeycomb port. The Tab is nowhere near that and again, devs have moved on it seems.

Great a Honeycomb port, have you ever tried that port out? It's completely useless. I've been changing firmwares and kernels and all that stuff for the last 2 weeks and still ended up with froyo being the best.
I take my NC with me everywhere nearly, but it just has not enough functionality, and I'm thinking of leaving it simply at home to read books.
Personally, I am totally in love with my SGT. I have rooted and have overcome ROM 1.2.1 with the new overcome 2.0.1 kernel, and it is just awesome Although I liked it beforehand, and it was certainly well usable, the ROM/kernel made it a lot better.
I take mine absolutely everywhere, and it does everything for me.
Yeah, I have seen some of those Honeycomb ports, not the nook one but other SDK ports on other devices.... to be honest, personally, I would rather wait for the source to be released and a proper port to be done. These SDK "Ports" are just horrible. (Not trying to hijack at all, but really guys? You all really want a nearly totally non-functional port? First thing everyone will do is ***** that things don't work, but I digress)
In the meantime, my tab works Great I would definitely recommend one, especially if you like the portability a 7" device offers. From what I understand the screen is similar to, if not better than, the NC for book reading, and that is one thing my tab is used for a lot.
It is also my phone, portable media player (plays pretty much every format I've thrown at it, and plays 720p and 1080p stuff quite smooth, obviously scaled down for the screen res but still), portable Internet, and all round mate impresser
I don't think that there will be any affordable 7 inch tablet coming out this year (for me^^).
Also if they have better hardware and stuff like that - it would be simply like putting a porsche motor in a opel corsa (or some other car).
The companies try to make the customers believe that when one has a device with a better/great hardware, that one can automatically do more with it, or that it runs better.
With all the great tablet-apps that support dualcore processors that will definetely be the case this year. (sarcasm).
I can't think of a better 7'inch tablet for this prize (~350€)
At this time I can see only one future contender in the same 7inch category: HTC Flyer.
It promises scripting capability using bluetooth stylus that might be very useful.
I had a quite a few Palms and used scripting a lot. Also I had two HTC Android phones and built quality was very good.
the only thing that makes it better is that "magical" pen, but it's going to be 699$ and it's not out yet.

Nice,
Just went back to stock,
pdfviewing works great and fluent, I think stock is the best choice for standard consumer.
But still I'm quite sure that I'm going to buy the tab, it's going to last longer, or I think I will use it longer.
I looked at it at a local Shop,
put in my sdcard with apk's and pdfs, I was just messing around, trying out everything, the tab could even open my 350mb 250 pages fallout 3 game guide, nook takes for ever to load it.
It simply looked like the perfect all in one device that I was actually looking for, somehow got the Nook to try the tablet thing out, now it's time to upgrade my tablet.

I much prefer it for almost everything. I usually use it lounging around and the 10.1" was a bit unwieldy. In fact, i got used to the 7" form factor on a BB Playbook, but got sick of bad apps and things just not working right. (I still use the BB for web browsing, it's the best for that.) I also have an Ipad3 if I need something larger.

Easy to jump the gun with all these other options
What do you do with your tab? If you game the reviews I have read state that the original 10.1 is better for that. Next question is, what does your current tab not have or do that you want it to do.
I personally came over from the original Transformer because I wanted something smaller. Really couldn't be any happier. The Tab was rather cheap and does what I want it to do. As others have said it's just so much more convenient with the 7" (I can actually carry it and use) compared to a bulkier 10" and although you are losing some real estate it's not a huge deal as most apps didn't use the entire 10" anyways.

Hi everyone.
I had an acer a200 that broke and it is going to be scrapped and i get a replacement, although i get to choose my new device.
My question is if the 7" screen is good for watching movies even if they are subtitled. I also want to know how reading a book on it is.

I had an acer a200 that broke and it is going to be scrapped and i get a replacement, although i get to choose my new device.
My question is if the 7" screen is good for watching movies even if they are subtitled. I also want to know how reading a book on it is.

I love doing both on my nexus 7. Subtitles haven't bothered me at all. I as well have come from a 10 inch and like I like this smaller form much more. The screen is no super amoled but it is very clear.

That sounds great... hope i will get to choose my next device, if so it will most def. be a nexus 7.
Btw, performance on stock is good right? There is not that many chances to play with one in store so all i have to go on is youtube reviews.... but my last device had a tegra2 so this should be faster/better.
i believe you'll be completely satisfied with the smoothness of Nexus7 even on stock, especially u come from tegra2
