Not a good day - HD2 General

My beautiful hd2 is no longer flawless. The vibrate function has ceased to work. I feel like ive lost a relative lol. You can hear the little motor trying to work inside but no vibration feedback. Suppose its time to scan ebay for a new 1 or maybe upgrade to the desire HD (if the missus will allow)
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

Time to open it and readjust that motor. It could be jammed and needs a slight repositioning

Think you might be right im sure theres a thread here on how to open it up. Time to search.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

Wel that aint done anything nw it is intermittent wether it works lol. Time to mazuma this mobile and get a DHD me thinks
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

Dude, Don't put it on the Motor.
Just say I no longer like the HD2 and I want a DHD, No body's gonna kill you

i don't know how much the OP searched before posting this redundant thread...
FYI, common cause of the vibration motor failing (mentioned in many many threads) is that the flash LED cover can get pressed inside. this puts pressure on the motor, preventing it from spinning.
take a close look at the flash LED cover on the back of the device...see if it appears depressed into the body. if so, your problem might be simply resolved by opening up the device just enough so that you can re-seat the flash LED cover back into its designed position.
if the flash LED cover is sitting right, then the motor might truly be busted...in which case, go ahead and think about replacing it with a DHD.
FYI, i've used a friend's DHD briefly and i can honestly say that its stock ROM felt noticeably MORE SLUGGISH than some of the DHD-based custom ROMs for the HD2 that i have used. of course, the DHD's CUSTOM ROMs might be leaps and bounds better than the DHD's stock ROM and any DHD-based custom ROM for the HD2!

I'll trade you for mine with a cracked screen

@ASCllker if you had read my "redundant " thread you would of known ive already tried opening up. So thanks for your redundant post in my redundant thread. I love my hd2 i just cant have a phone with no haptic feedback.

ahan, i label it redundant because the opening post of the thread offers no new information, nor have you worded the subject and opening post as a request for help, more like a "breaking news" (pun intended). this is a forum, not twitter...so try to be verbose/detailed as opposed to terse and "bloggy" (for lack of a better word). of course, all that is my opinion.
still, my post was meant to guide your attention to the flash LED cover, because you didn't make it clear in your later posts exactly what aspects of the device's components you looked into when you DID open it up. nor did you mention that you were already aware of the possibility of a faulty flash LED cover. so i added new information. you might already know about it but future readers might benefit from the information (who am i kidding? as if new-comers EVER search!).
once again, focus on details please. if this thread was just some breaking news from your life and you've made your decision to move on to replace the HD2 and need no further help, why not have the thread closed? if you really intended to get help, then i suggest you change the subject and edit the first post to add more information. you might get better help than what has already been posted in this thread as well as in numerous other threads.

anddroid on HD2. is it Possaoble?

I had my hd2 for 2 months and i love it. But, im getting very disappointed that it's lacking in apps and community support unlike the andriod and iphone os. I see poplur apps that are available for android and iphone but not wm. i am starting to wish i never got the hd2 and really wish i knew about the evo thats coming out soon.
on top of that i see the phone on ebay has really dropped in price to about £270 ($411)
so is it possible to put android on hd2?
Wow
Before you get blasted for making a post and not searching let me give you some advice, Search! There are a LOT of threads about Android on HD2, it's not there yet but it is being worked on. Really, type Android in the search bar and you will see all the threads asking the same thing, good luck

If you used the search functions (like most people) you would find your answer.
If you did this simple thing you would find that at this time, its not yet possible, HTC have the best group of developers on it but are having some trouble with the porting or something.

Off: I succeeded in using my HD2 as a condom yesterday! Took me ages to port every bit of information...
On: Let's assume you haven't read the forum rules, thus you wouldn't know about the built in Search function. There`s Google. Why not Google for something (such as "android on hd2")? After all, it`s much easier to type and to read than typing a long post on a board where you need an account and where you need to wait for others to answer your question...
At least he searched the price of the HD2 on ebay...

It also really surprised me to see the price of HD2 drop down so quickly. Maybe mostly because not so many people can get on well with HD2, which is the best phone I've ever bought.
Easy on the flaming guys. Im sure he understands now. For all u know, u might just drive someone away from xda with negative thoughts......where as this is one of the most helpful community.
Like yourself I'm a new HD2 owner. I can understand why you might think there's a lack of apps for our device, when devices like the iPhone have 160,000+ apps. However I've found four different GPS nav apps out there (Igo, CoPilot, TomTom and Garmin), an app to make a flashlight out of your camera LEDs, a registry editor, a voice-dialler, a metal detector, a decent file explorer, a media player etc etc etc. The question needs to be asked, how many media players / file explorers / gps apps do you need on your device? For me, one of each is more than enough. Many of the iPhone apps are just double-ups of the same functionality.
After getting my phone I spent the next week on XDA searching for apps, themes, tweaks and games, trying them out and working out what works and what doesnt.
My HD2 is now running and looking mint, and I've got more games than I know what to do with. As the others in this thread have already pointed out, you do need to take the time and use the search function.
As for support, you couldn't be more wrong - it was the emmense wealth of knowledge of XDA-developers that gave me the confidence to buy the HD2. It will take you time to find the info you're looking for in these forums, but the answers are there, and you'll end up with a superior phone to the iPhone if you're prepared to give it a chance.
Drop me an email on [email protected] if you'd like to know where to find the bits you're after.

[Move To General] What XDA Needs

Ok I love the xda forum but there are some things that tick me off and I feeli should say what I need to say to better this forum
1. XDA needs some sort of live chat service for those who need help and answers quick
2. We need more people with knowledge in rooting and flashing roms on and to anwser questions
3. Better tutorials because these tutorials aren't that straight foward and is a bit difficult make a for dummies.
Post what you think xda needs to do to better this site

3 things I can think of right away:
1. A limit on how big your signature is. I'm so sick of seeing 1 line post and half-page long sig with bunch of worthless info in there (including your last 10 phones, gaming consoles, your cars) and load of meaninless pictures.
2. A waiting period between time when one registers and time when they can post. So many people register, don't read anything and just ask stupid questions over and over again. I'm oficially done holding people's hand to do anything that was walked-through before.
3. A required field with phone info (including bootloader, radio, rom, etc). No more guessing.
Yes, I'm demanding but I really see these forums degrading over the time.

He's not so wrong. I also noticed in the last time, that several times the same question was asked, even if the answer to the question was already given one or two days ago.
In addition it would help much to know, what is already installed on the phone, especially SPL and RADIO. So you can suggest directly some steps, without asking first about the configuration. Probably we can provide a template for the information which should be included within the signature.

[Q] Can we use softkey backlight for notifications?

I see it has been done for the international version I9000, but our buttons are different. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772672
I think it would be great if the home key backlight pulsed on notification.
Anyone know how to implement something like this?
A small led pulsing would go a long way toward saving my precious battery life, instead of periodically turning the screen on to check for new messages.
Yes. There is backlight notification mod for our phone. However, I tried several versions(10-32seconds) and could not get the backlight to turn off until I cleared the notification. I believe it only works with certain kernels and ROMs.
It can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826278
I have that installed, it just keeps the lights on longer for the softkey buttons.
What I would like to see is one of the softkeys like home pulse with the screen off when a new notification arrives, like the nexus one trackball notifications.
Anyone?
birdman's "barebones" kernel in this very forum supports backlight notifications
I have a handful of kernels on rom manager that support bln also
please stop posting questions in the dev forums!!!
Where would you suggest the question be posted. It's not a general question and it's not a theme/app...maybe BLN is now an accessory?

hop on rom manager and look under jt1334 in the downloads section..
Maybe if the search function here worked I would have found the answer to my question. I obviously dont post much so I seem to know how to be resourceful.
In this case I thought we could all benefit in getting some sort of proper notification system working on the Fascinate. The kernel mod seems to light up all the keys then go out 30 seconds later. I was wondering if it was possible to just get the "home" button to pulse like it did on my nexus one (obviously not in color).
Sorry I am not a dev, I have a life outside of android, windows mobile, and IOS, but I am definately not a noob.
Anyway its been nice chatting with all of you open minded developers working on this open platform. Mods please close this thread as it seems the developers just want to be rockstars in their own little threads, and scream "search!!!" and "noob" in all the others.
Thanks for all your help...
Don't bite the hand that feeds...
XDA is a Developers forum - not a tech support forum. There are dozens of other android forums on the Internet for that. The developers here share their work for free here and grow tired of answering the same questions over and over. The Development Forum is getting so overrun with non-development threads that it's hard to find ROM, Kernel, and App releases.
EDIT: In fact it's grown so bad that some developers aren't even releasing there work here anymore. That is why you received a "lecture".
I dont think I bit any hand, I said I appreciated the work jt did on the clean rom, and in fact I am using it right now. I think a lot of these guys on the forum are brilliant and I dont generally ask for help or any type of hand holding. Im a big boy with a job and I take chances, if I kill a phone so be it, thats why I have insurance and a warranty.
I just wanted to start a discussion and see if an idea of mine was feasable. I must have asked the wrong question, at the wrong time, in the wrong forum. -Sorry guys!
Man, and I thought the ios guys were douchebags, I guess douchebagginess is carrier dependent here since I never had a problem in the Nexus One forums. Go Verizon!

I didnt call you anything, but this is getting childish. Someone delete this thread please.
blah........
There seems to be some confusion here so allow me to answer the question and end the cat fight in one shot. There are in fact TWO different backlight mods for the Fascinate. The one you currently have is the Extended Softkey Backlights, which simply extends the amount of time your softkeys stay lit during normal operation. There is also a mod called Backlight Notifications, which does exactly what you are asking for. It is implemented in jt1134's kernels, amongst others.
As for posting location, the others are correct that this question should have been posted in general, not dev. There was just a major post from the mods specifically about this issue.

Thank you for taking the time to clear things up gardndj, will definately check out the backlight notification mod.
Now that this is in the right place, I should note that you don't want the standalone BLN mod, which is i9000-only. You need one of jt1134's kernels with BLN built in, which are only available on ROM manager.

[Q] Benefits or Rooting?

Hello, I was wondering what the benefits of rooting the My Touch 4g would be? Would this allow me to remove the bloatware that came pre-installed on the phone? Also I've heard talk of a possible better rom to put on the phone. Would someone be able to explain why this would be better and what rom might be better?
Thanks

Disclaimer/Advice/Humble Opinion:
My advice (without trying to hurt anyone's feelings too much) is DON'T ROOT. I would suggest you familiarize yourself with everything (Linux, ADB, XDA, Google) before diving in head first.
Despite popular belief, having root does NOT in fact make you cooler.
Way too many new users are trying to root because they think it's cool or heard it's cool. You need to learn your device first.
If you don't know how to perform a Nandroid backup, or restore a previous ROM backup, flash updates, install custom ROM's etc, then you should NOT root. You should browse the forums here, read everything until you know it well. Google search related topics. Exhaust all available avenues, then ask questions. After you've executed all of these options you might consider rooting and starting to tinker with your device.
I second what CBC has said. They lock these phones down for business and support reasons, mainly that having root lets you pretty easily screw things up. You shouldn't root unless you have a good idea of what's actually going on, how to back out of it, etc. Just page through some of the root/unroot threads and look at all the stupid questions people post. If they don't look stupid to you, please read read read before thinking any more about rooting.
Don't take any personal offense to this, it just that there's a real chance you can brick your device. The software root itself is fairly safe but at least the original method to disabling the write protection--flashing the engineering hboot--modifies your last line of defense in fixing a broken device.

@spazfishy
I first started tweaking my phones with a couple WM HTC devices. I did it mostly to increase performance and become a member of a community of geeks (for lack of a better term). BTW, when I say tweak I don't mean building ROMs or writing code. I'm an idiot in that regard.
I'm a year and a month into having Android phones and I still don't know anything about SDK, very, very little about ADB push/pull, etc. Still, I've managed to have fun with my phones and have rooted and toyed with them without any issue worse than a boot loop here and there. It's fun to be the first guy to get an update for a ROM because you're eagerly hitting refresh on the supporting thread. There's also a satisfaction in reading a ****load of info on these forums and figuring out something by yourself or with a little input from the guys here.
I can agree that you should read as much as you can about how these phones work. However, you don't need to know as much as you might think. What helped me was watching some youtube videos...walkthroughs of rooting and tutorials for installing ROMs.
It's **** like this, XDA.
Instead of telling this guy "sorry, rooting is too difficult for your little brain to comprehend, you're just going to end up bricking you're phone" why don't you try to help him with his problem?
I've been following XDA for a while now, and it bothers me that many of you would rather treat this as some type of subculture when we're only talking about ****ing cell phones. Instead, why not try to grow this little community, and show carriers that consumers not only desire open source, they demand it in products they spend their hard earned money buy.
Things will only get there if we can rely on developers and enthusiasts to help spread their knowledge. Modaco and Cyanogen already do a really good job of it, and so does AOSP.
I say to spazfishy, yes. Root you're phone, but not right now. Wait a bit. As more stable ROMs became available, this is actually a good way of getting your phone to behave the way you want it to. And if you've been on this website before, you know the risks involved so do you're homework, and happy hunting.
Hopefully you'll find someone with talent willing to help you.

I SECOND this sentiment. yes, I agree with the overall concept that people should do a search on the forums first and that we don't "need " several separate threads with the same info... however how much better is it really to have a bunch of threads floating around (taking up just as much space as the redundant threads that everyone treats as a plague) chastising and mocking people who just want a little help with their friggin phone??
I've recently been spending a lot of time on these forums after picking up my mt4g and as useful as these forums are - every third thread is someone belittling a poster for asking a simple question. it's pathetic and not beneficial to our community.

yes, heaven forbid he not do EXACTLY what you did!
in a Q&A forum no less..give me a break. and no, I'm not gonna keep going on and on about this in this thread. i'm done.
it just proves the original point i was trying to make - which is now we just have another thread on this boards of people being a**holes and talking down to other people just because they don't possess the exact same information you do or because they aren't going about your perfect prescribed process for obtaining said information..whatever.
if someone asks a question you don't like - why don't you just go re-root your phone? or put your wife's cat in the microwave?
if you have the answer - why not take the 90 seconds it was going to take you to be a giant tool and just answer the question?
OR if redundant posts is really THAT big of a problem on here - then have moderators just delete these posts? or figure out how to become a moderator and then you can play forum cop in all of your spare time and delete these posts and actually be part of a solution not just a part of another problem.
see all you happy campers in another post

Coming from HD2 section.

Hi,
Just want to say that im likely coming from HD2 section soon as im getting a GS2.
I'm just a bit gutted as this section doest seem as organized as HD2 section, ie there doesn't seem to be a dating convention (or at least non enforced) so topics seem random.
What I like about HD2 section is that for the most part most devs/cooks etc release to same standard naming rules, ie [date].[ROM/KERNEL].[Rom Title/Version.[Etc].
These standards make things much more orgnized overall and looking at this section sort of brings me back to when I was using the HTC Universal forum
I'm sure I will eventually find my way and learn to get used to going back to less standards, mostly because im sooo looking forward to getting the GS2 so everything else is second
Waaa? Trying checking again, it got everything you stated. =.=
Unless I'm illiterate...

That's a shame.
Cant see why it was voted against tbh.
2 good things about the HD2 forum is 1) Its huge amount of dedicated developer following and 2) Its organization. Even though I visit the forum daily so know which topics are new/updated its nice to see a standard topic title naming convention with date/type/title, That way you can see clearly from browse page which are updated topics with regards to builds instead of dates/titles been in random sequence.
Either way I'll have to learn to adapt back to this random naming as GS2 will be my daily device soon. However I wont miss my HD2 simply because it wont be going anywhere, I will still be using it to try new roms and also as a great backup.
I also came from the HD2 section and finding the GS2 section a bit of a maze, but all is well ) I'm hoping this GS2 will give me as much play as my HD2's did.. still have them, one cracked screen and one that the digitizer is going out on, the screen will stop responding until I press the End button twice.

Well im gunna be honest here, I actually have a iPhone 4S aswell atm but I just cant get used to such a mall screen and although the OS is quite good (as far as stability, ease of use) I just cant get used to having my fecking hand held every step of way and also the feeling of having them tied behind my back at most points. I bought it because I was given it at such a great price that I would have no problem getting rid once I was bored (approx 3 weeks) and then getting my only viable HD2 replacement (hardware wise compared to price). Before the GS2 I just didnt really see any reason to get new device since HD2 had basically (or in allot of cases better) hardware then new native Android devices.
Just made my mind up now and getting rid of the iPhone, keeping my HD2 and having GS2 as main device.
PS. Just want to add, I'm also a Galaxy Tab 7 user and that forum also (for the most part) keeps to a standard way of titling topics so its going to be hard to getting used to the dev sections here.

Hi,
Just want to say that im likely coming from HD2 section soon as im getting a GS2.
I'm just a bit gutted as this section doest seem as organized as HD2 section, ie there doesn't seem to be a dating convention (or at least non enforced) so topics seem random.
Unfortunately many posters will not follow the rules and post questions in the wrong section .
We also have a greater share of idiotic repeat posts fails to use search posters .
Roms are labelled but they are often updated frequently within that thread and even have kernel changes .
Not saying i disagree with your viewpoint but suggest you contact the mods re your suggestion .
Noobs do find it hard to navigate .

Almost all of our threads have a [ROM] or [KERNEL] or [KITCHEN] or [GUIDE] tag.
The initial perusal might be somewhat daunting. Once you understand Samsung's ROM releasing conventions, you'll understand why we don't insist on having each thread tagged with a date. I'd recommend reading the first 3 posts of Intratech's thread to give you a start. The series of numbers/letters found in the title of most [ROM] threads is essentially our dating convention (ie XWKK5).
Then maybe sort the forum by the "Stats" column to see what's popular and go from there.

That was a joke, we have a sense of humor here in the gs2 section
crachel summed it up pretty nicely.

Hey GRiM-UK, if you're coming from the HD2 and have used Hyperdroid, we've got pongster and doctorcete working their magic here yet again. It evolved into something different considering ROMs here are mostly based on stock (Some AOSP, MIUI and CM also) because of proprietary drivers which source isn't always available for sadly...
It does take some getting used to, as I do agree the HD2 forums were easier to understand (And less noobish to me), but you know... Sometimes you have to move on. haha. I mostly read the general page and the original android page, but the decent information a tad all over the place... So good luck!

I think you misunderstand, Im very familiar with what a Rom and Kernel is and their tags etc and am not a n00b who gets confused.
I'm simply saying that it really benefits the forum when each release has a date tag at beginning of topic title instead of in random position or not at all. It means that all dates are in same line and each release is easily distinguishable by build date an you can check for updates at a glance and not rely on remembering all the version numbers.
Its a really small thing that makes a huge difference, Ill probably end up getting used to not having them but atm its really hard adjusting. The HD2 section is just far superior in organization imho.
For example checkout the HD2 NAND section compare to the Dev sectiosn here...

Please don't think I'm complaining or don't appreciate the work in this section, I'm just a bit disappointed that XDA or section mods hasn't tried to bring the convention to other forums, Guess I just assumed others were same by now.
I guess this will all change when XDA finally starts its release database.
welcome to the SGS2 section my friend!
Its quite different over here as one of the rules of being in the SGS2 section is we must deal with grumpy and abusive coders, who are to busy yelling and abusing than to actually get on working with the code!
You'll soon meet codeworkx soon enough....you lucky devil you....
