Allshare doesnt display folder structure - Galaxy Tab General

Well, got myself a tab just today. Playing around discovered that allshare doesnt display folder structure as its served from my PC via Twonky.
My PS3 and SGS can see structure alright, but tab mashes all my videos into single folder, which makes navigating impossible.
What gives ?

Lucky you. I tested several (all perfectly working with the PS3) media servers and NONE even showed any file shared.

Well, straight hack of replacing dlna.apk and dlna.odex with the ones from my SGS didnt work...
Any ideas how to switch out allshare to the SGS one ?
Normall installing doesnt seem to work either...
Ideas ?

Try skifta from market

The only client i found to work is AllShare.
Twonky says "Cant start playback" for whatever reason, Skifta, says something like "player not compatible" or "not connected" or some other stuff.
I use twonky server to serve stuff, and my SGS gladly plays anything i throw at it (except MKV, which was expected), so does my tab but only via broken AllShare that piles all the shared stuff into single folder. And there are hundreds of files to scroll through...

Try iMediaShare. It is free in Android Market

I found that the only working soultion is to use Plex.
It has however three issues: it's not free, dosen't do subtitles, and if you want a folder structure, you need to add the folders one by one. Subtitles aside i'm happy with the result.

A related DLNA client/server thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825179

Well, some months passed by, i thought i'd check this thread.
So, anyone figured out how to run DLNA.apk/odex from SGS on SGT ?
I mean i have lloads of devices that use my TwonkyMedia server (v4.4.4) to stream stuff, but not tab, because of its useless dlna app.
Twonky dlna client became paid and it wasnt any good to begin with, plex wants to use its own server, which is redundant, skifta is spotty performance at best...
Would happily run SGS allshare.... Tried again replacing SGT DLNA/ODEX without success. Cannot install post deletion, it complains that "it's a sys app, do you want to replace" and then fails to install.
Replacing manually (in system/app) wants to install...
Out of ideas...

I used upnplay and imediashare (both free on the market) with success on my tab. You may need a player that supports certain codecs, like rockplayer or mobo player (there are free versions of both on the market).
These work great with my synology NAS streaming.
Since gingerbread, allshare started working well for me. Before this it showed the server but couldn't see any files.

2.2 (froyo) users and DLNA (allshare)

Currently 2.1 "All Share" will not play mkv's via lan.
Can a froyo user test the following methods.
Using a network file manager app like Astro, are you able to play a MKV from lan?
Via Allshare can you play a MKV from lan?
My Synology 107+ contains 3 small test files : one avi(Xvid), one mpg(MPEG2) and og one mkv(x264)
My I9000 JPK with OCLF could not play any of them!!!
I think they all worked on JM8!!!
Regards,
JKay
I tried avi format with my Philipf 46PFL9704, and it works fine!
But Mkv and default video it doesen't open 'cos it hasn't good codecs..
No luck with mkv or xvid (avi) through allshare on jpk.
Also its worth mentioning that the same files I tested play perfectly directly on the phone..

It has nothing to do with codecs. Copy the same file to your device and it will play fine. It is a problem with AllShare, and it seems like it is still broken in the Froyo update. Which doesn't surprise me since AllShare is not part of Android.
Guys, as I understand, Allshare is only used to transfer files to a player. Playing mkv or anything has to do with the player's capability. Firmware won't change the experience!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I rename my .mkv files to .avi.
Media Player 11 then picks them up as shareable, and I can stream them without problems via AllShare to my i9000.
Only problem is, you cannot seek, so you have to watch from the beginning.
I've streamed MKVs from my phone to my Western Digital TV box, with JF3 and JM2...
my allshare cannot find my laptop after I upgraded to 2.2 JPM.. anyone else have this issue?
I have reflashed and it still has this problem..
I also have a problem where the phone will connect to one of my routers at home, but will not connect to the repeater bridge router in my room which has identical settings as my main router..
Along with Allshare not working, these two features were working fine before, and now after I flashed froyo JPM, it stopped working..
When I tried going back to stock firmware, it still didnt work..
Any ideas guys? Thanks!
I'm having same problems.
Upgraded my Samsung Galaxy to Froyo and now can't play .mkv files via allshare anymore. This is so frustrating, I thought Froyo was all singing and going to make the Android device the ultimate weapon. I have tried other andriod .mkv players and all have the same problem <media not recognised>
Hi,
actually, after the update, AllShare is more or less completely broken. First of all, a firmware upgrade will most likely not help, because AllShare is not part of android at all.
Regarding another post: A media server does not only offer the video to a network source, it obeys to a certain standard (DLNA), which is why you will always find your MKVs being transcoded to some sort of MPEG stream before playing. The Media SERVER has all the work providing ready-to-go video, most likely with as little compression as possible. DLNA ist not just a samba share. It is way more than that.
Can anyone confirm the MP3 behavior I am experiencing? MP3s play fine for the first 30 seconds, somewhere around that they start skipping around and finally stop when played through my PS3 media client.
Samsung Galaxy S i9000, lagfixed, JPO.
Cheers.
Andreas
This is a real pain in the bum.. there must be a way to get the mkv files to stream from my server to my phone. It worked perfectly on the Android 2.1 version : (
I wonder who makes Allshare and if they are aware of the problem? Alternatively does anyone know any other program that can stream .mkv files to the Galaxy? I really don't want to start having to load an 8gb file on to the card to play it : /
There's another thread on this in the Vibrant forum. No news there either.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10387971#post10387971
Hmm never tried Allshare but regarding Astro I've never gotten it to play anything from a network share, always had to copy to the SD card first. That does take an annoyingly long time so I'll watch for progress on this as well (for whenever I actually get a working SGS back in my hands ).
Try using ES File Explorer as it seems better than Astro and has its own video player which streams from FTP and file shares OK for me.

Yes, but it lacks tracking (skipping in a file) and also doesn't support MKV.

AllShare is a DLNA program. It is capable of functioning both as a client and as a server. It sounds like you want to play back PC files on your phone. For this you would need something acting as a DLNA server. If your NAS doesn't support this then you could install a server program on something else and point it to your NAS for content. This could be a spare computer, a device specifically made for this, or even some routers.
Try to use another media server like PS3 Media server or tvirsity. DNLA will not support MKV files.
Using PS3 Media server I can stream mkv to my ps3 and my Samsung LCD tv that supports DNLA.

[FIXED] Streaming iPod encoded .mp4 over network

I've got an annoying problem that I don't know how to fix.
I have a script that uses handbrake to encode videos for me and spits them out as a .mp4 file. I used to view these from a local open web directory so I could stream them while I was in the bath or in the kitchen or having a dump or whenever I wasn't in front of my TV.
They work on my iPhone, iPod touch and on the various Android things I put on my HD2. How can it work on a flashed WinMo phone and not on a proper Android device?
What's frustrating is that they work when I transfer them over using Astro or downloading them in the browser. I assume it would work if I put them on a memory stick but all of these solutions take more time.
I was thinking I should root the Tab and put a custom Android on it, but is there anything else I can do without re-encoding a bunch of files?
What exactly is the problem? How are you trying to stream them?
I have an open web directory which is basically just a list of .mp4 files. I open the browser and point it to my site, 192.168.1.3/movies, and then click on whatever I want to watch.
Then usually it gives me an option of what app I want to play it in and I usually just pick the default video player.
This doesn't work on the Tab where it does on my other devices (Android and iOS).
So the problem is that its not giving you an option to pick which app to open the .mp4 with?
Maybe you dont have any other apps that can play the file?-
It does give me an option, it just refuses to play saying that the type is not supported. I've tried the built in video player, rockplayer, meridian. I've also tried it on a file manager like Astro.
The files just refuses to play like they do on my hacked HD2 and iPhone.
Are you trying to emulate this like the AllShare program? Cant seem to get this to work too on the network media
I don't know what AllShare is unfortunately. Did it work on a previous device?
Allshare is sammys DLNA client. Its pretty good for small folders on a LAN server. But it doesn't understand headers very well. Search is your friend.
Someone pointed me in the right direction on another board.
Another Forum said:
OK, figured it out. The problem is that most MPEG4/QuickTime muxers append a critical piece of metadata to the end of the file and it needs to be moved to the beginning to allow streaming/progressive downloading in the Android media player (it's not a Samsung-specific problem).
If you already have a bunch of non-streaming-compatible MP4 files, there's a tool that comes with ffmpeg called qt-faststart that rewrites them (without reencoding) in a compatible fashion.
Also, it looks like Handbrake 0.9.2 and up have an option for producing "Web optimized" MPEG-4 files, which if you enable should fix future videos.

Galaxy Tab as DLNA Client

Does anyone know how to get media streaming to the tab via DLNA? I know twonky works on most files, however, TVersity and PS3 Media Server do not. Does anyone have a supported file type and codec support paper? Has anyone got a way to make all file types work, even if they have to be transcoded?
Dona doesn't transcode. And there's Sammy's Dona client preinstalled - its called allshare.
For crappy transfixing on the fly try vocal stream and convert.though why you want to do this when you have allshare is a mystery.
I know DLNA itself does not transcode. I am looking to see if someone knows of a DLNA server that will transcode into the proper format for Allshare. Allshare has brutal file support, as It will not play any file I have without transcoding. Might also be a MIME type issue, just seeing how everyone is streaming to the Tab.
I have never had to transcode anything in order to dlna share with allshare. My bids are all in avi though as far as I recall. Music and images all work fine too. They are all mp3 and jpg respectively.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk
I don't think it's the codec support as such but rather how the DLNA server is presenting the video to Allshare, it's obviously VERY picky as I've had no luck at all getting it to play anything that plays fine when copied to the Tab itself.
Twonky is a pretty crappy application IMHO, I've always found it very unreliable. PS3 media server might work? TVersity is a bit bloated but is another option. The latter 2 will (I believe) stream and/or transcode as needed.

I use miniDLNA on o rooted, Linux based NAS box. Had no problems so far. If you are or can run Linux I'd recommend miniDLNA.
Have you tried serviio? I use this on Win7 with my Samsung TV.
you can use astro to fiddle with extension headers (but i find allshare works almost flawlessly with the new official jk5 firmware)

Official JK5, you mean via Kies? Is it out?
If so, is it different from the Samfirmware one? Kies says to me that my device "can not" be updated, not that it "does not" need updating.

[Q] how do u stream movies wirelessly on a vista pc to your acer a500

hi,is it possible to stream movies wirelessly from a vista laptop onto the a500 through the home network? if yes,how do i set it up? cos i've tried everything
Well if you plan to use only on the home network their clear.fi app works. For remote access I have been using subsonic it does require a donation to allow video streaming

Do you know how to get other folders to show up from the clear.fi app? All I can see for video streaming from my PC, is a video/collections folder. I would like to be able to see my media folder that I have on my desktop.
I am using plex and it works very well.

How in the heck did you get plex to work? Did you change the default player to something else? If so how?
I load a movie and it times out on every one. When I contacted the makers of plex they say that it is not working on the acer yet and offer a refund.
I use ps3 media server on the pc and upnplay which is free from the android market for the A500 , The ps3 media server trans-codes on the fly and I use mobo player from upn to play the content. easy as 123 setup and works perfectly and also means I can play any file type. 1080p is a bit jerky but 720p is as smooth as silk. Did I mention its all free

I think that the Acer app only shows/shares the stuff you have in my documents. So you can't watch movies through it if you have them on another HD (like I do sadly).
I am able to see all of my share's on any of my drives. But my home network is wide open on this side of the router.
Might check your sharing settings on you pc, and your firewall if applicable.
i do recomend subsonic wholely just a one time donation unoocks video streaming. you select the folders to share music and movies and the app is free on android and one port needed to be opened to view from anywhere tablet phone or say work computer. also to with the ability to download the content to
I have tried:
Plex: Works but slow as hell and it didn't let me skip a part of the movie so I had to watch every movie from the start.
Subsonic: IMHO a Plex clone so I didn't bother with it and I couldn't test it to see if it streams movies any better.
Upnplay: Ugly and clunky interface but it does stream movies from any UPNP server without installing any additional software and it's free. It uses your default browser and it can skip in a movie so I'm using that. It's not pretty but it does work well.

I won't donate just to test it but the web interface was worse than what Plex offers and I've tried Plex (was not impressed) so I've just skipped it.
As I've said. The best solution is the one that doesn't require any additional software on my PC. So even though Upnplay is ugly it gets the job done.
P.S.: I have my opinions you have yours so unless don't force your on me and I won't force mine on you. I've compiled a list that would be handy for me a few days ago when I was searching for the same thing and I hope that helps someone. Bickering over trivial stuff sure won't.

Subsonic is free to try, the app is much more intuitive than the web interface when used on an Android device (the web interface of any program that also provides a native application will be much less intuitive on any platform). I'm not saying there is anything wrong with forming an opinion such as yours, but I will say Subsonic and Plex are two different products, trying one piece of one product and using that as a reason to dismiss another different (and competing) product is just being ignorant. If you want to be ignorant, run with it, but don't ask for peoples advice and opinions and simply dismiss them based on your own ignorance. Or, just don't ask for advice if you aren't willing to listen to it. Oh.. wait, that's right.. this isn't even your thread, troll.
Now, as for the OP, if this is simply to watch inside your own network, things like Subsonic, Plex, etc. are more than what you need. All you really need is what mrvanes outlined, or even just a file manager that supports network shares (like File Manager HD, File Expert, EStrongs, etc). Browse to your media and open it (a good file manager will not require to copy to local first) with the program of your choosing.

How to view videos on my pc over wifi network on my xoom

Can anyone tell me the best way to view files, video(movies),pics, music over y wifi network. I've tried various apps like upnp along with mobo player and codec add on but it only plays certain files most of my media is not accesable.
I used to use a laptop and watch everything perfectly from my pc downstairs using the windows library share if only was as easy with my xoom. when i try to acces the library the xoom see's the library but only short video content of all my video camera clips nothing is organized as is on my pc. Please help as there doesnt seem to be any info anywhere, Thanks.
Assuming your server is a Windows PC then your best bet is to share the folders your content is kept in then use ES File Explorer to access the network shares. Just opening the files will stream them over wifi for you. I use Dice Player but I'm sure other players work just as well.
(There are also other file explorers out there, I'm just advocating ES because I know it works with streaming).
I can't thank you enough as es explorer is just what i was looking for as it shows my files from my windows pc as a laptop would.
The only problem i have now is that it wont open my movie files when i go to these files i get a message 'login failure this may be caused by : -the account has no permissions, any advice would be great thanks andy.
Fofgot to mention i can play all my music , pics, and smaller vieo clips which is a lot more than before it's just the files with my movies in that i cant access without the above error message.
Yes !!
for me i use this:
- PS3 Media server on my Computer (share all media from your computer to all devices by network wifi/lan)
and i can play simultany on my play3 & Xoom
-Skifta on my Xoom (DLNA client/server) it does both
-DICE Player (play mkv 720p) only who work fine (but it's paying)
but i've used before MOBOPLAYER who work fine too but no sound in mkv
MX Video PLayer it's ok too
I still get the error message when i try to play my movies some are avi and some mkv but i dont even get as far as seeing the video file , i dont get passed opening the movie file itself, surely someone out there knows please help. Also i looked on google and apparently if you turn off the anonymous function and use a user name and password from my pc it will work but where do you find the username and password as i didnt realise i had one on my pc.
As I told someone else, plex media server plus the android app works like a dream if you have all your movies/tv shows in one spot.

This will probably be because of Windows file or share permissions. In ES File Explorer, you can edit the server properties and put in your Windows username and password. It may also require the domain field to be filled in, which if it's just a normal home PC and not connected to a domain, would be your PC's hostname.
P.S... use the thanks button
I use ES Explorer for streaming from my server while on my home network and Plex for streaming when I'm on a different network (i.e. 4G, someone elses WiFi).
Zumocast.
There is a version floating around on the xda forums that is compatible with the xoom.
Nobody here mentioned it and I don't know why.
It allows you to stream and download files from your computer over any network.
It's speed is dependant on your connection.
Best of all. It's free
Stop reading and download it.

im still trying to figure this. I run Nero media home on my server and my ps3 and n900 pick it up fine, anything on my xoom doesn't see it.
PS3 Media Server
I use PS3 Media Server and the free UPnPPlay app on my Xoom (as well as other Android devices), and RockPlayer Lite to watch the video, which works great.
PS3 MS is very configurable so I can use it to serve up videos to the TV, PS3, Xoom or other Androids at home, at varying levels of video quality, all from the one Windows box.
I use Skifta. Its free - just install on both PC and xoom. Simple config and uses your favorite player

zumacast works fine
I would second that suggestion about zumacast. It works fine on the xoom.

create a shortcut to your smb share
