Xda posting noob here,
Some people seems to have problems with some of the launchers using the custom roms. I've run into the problem (home screen looping) myself like on my nook color and a few of the custom fascinate roms.
I'm current using RubikS rom from my fascinate, but the camera does not work for it and my phone CDMA reception seems a lot weaker than with the stock eclair (less bars (only one bar) in my room which at best gets 2-3 bars). I don't have the minimum post to post in the dev section or I would be commenting in that thread. I know he is aware of the camera problem. so it is kind of a moot comment on my part.
Back on topic go launcher ex has been working great for me when I run into the home screen loop problem and I also like the functionality. So why is it everybody seems to prefer AWD or that other launcher( whatever its called)? What I am missing?

I kinda liked Go Launcher, but, never tried the ex version. I noticed it had lots of problems with freezing and stuttering so I got rid of it. I currently use ADW EX now and love it. I've tried Launcher Pro and Launcher Pro Plus but wasn't a fan at all. Both have their positives and negatives and customization features, but, my preference is ADW EX. Download and try the free versions and see what you like. Again, Go launcher was just a bit buggy for me though I did kinda like it.
EDIT: to improve your cell reception, dial *228 and select option 2. It will update your phones roaming capabilities and then reboot your phone automatically. This could and should help.

go launcher ex (the free version) is what I'm using. I'll check ADW EX on the next RubikS update.
I've used launcher pro in the past, and ever since Go launcher EX came out, I have never looked back.
IMHO this is one of the bettter launchers out there.

Wait, what? Do you use ADW, or Launcher Pro? They are two completely different launcher apps.
I stick with Launcher Pro Plus. ADW EX looks tempting, as it has a lot more customization options at the moment, but I really like the LPP widgets, and any replacement I've found for them that will work with another launcher are very poor imitations. Since there is a major rewrite of LPP in the works, I'm content to wait for that, as it will likely have many of the features I've been waiting for.
For the record, I did try Go Launcher Ex for a bit, and like ADW, it does have some things that LP doesn't, but it is also lacking in areas as well, and while nit buggy, just felt stuttery and rough aground the edges, whereas LP feels very polished. In the end, everyone has their own opinion about which launcher is best, and they have their own reasons why. LP is the ticket for me, but don't take my word for it, try it yourself and see what you like.

LP huh? How much memory does it use? I'm surprized none has bought up Zeam.
I've never installed Zeam, but from what I've seen in screenshots, it's basically a barebones version of LauncherPro, focusing on performance rather than functionality. I could be wrong though.
How much memory does LP use? No idea, and I don't really care either, since Android has such good memory management. I'm willing to bet it's less than TouchWiz though.

There is a way that they and the fascinate can disable tw launcher in their settings. According 2 the article I read, the Captivate and Vibrant lack that ability. Their is a link somewhere around here for the Nexus' launcher2. It works ok-im still using it. Ill try 2 post if I can find it.

LauncherPro is actually FASTER than stock launcher on Nexus One. I had to load Launcher Pro on my friend's Nexus cuz the stock launcher was so darn slow...
I've had lots of problems with LauncherPro. I've installed and removed it about 4 times. It works fine for a few days and then I start to have FC and huge lags. Remove it and everything is working good again.
I've found that Zeam is a great launcher, very minimal to start with but you can add what you want.

Nice find. I could never get myself to enjoy launcherpro either, and actually liked touchwiz. Zeam, however is awesome.
I'm a huge fan of ADW. It runs soo fast, and I'm a huge fan of being able to edit the number of rows/columns, I rather enjoy the High res look, and all my widgets scale correctly.. I love the shortcut bar too.. Best launcher ever.
I tried launcer pro, but I wasn't a fan, i switched back to regular touchwiz until I decided to give adw a go.
http://www.androidcentral.com/yes-you-can-turn-touchwiz-sprint-epic-4g-you-wont-want
Yeah, you can turn off Touchwiz on the Sprint Epic 4G and get rid of the static home screen icons and horizontal launcher. But what you're left with isn't really an improvement. You're stuck with three home screens, an outdated launcher, and a feeling of guilt for not listening to us in the first place.

Tried like four and it came down to ADW and launcher. AT the end I liked the lower scrolling bar for Launcher so I kept that one.
The only thing I liked better on ADW was the themes.

I thought that the Epic was using TW 2.5 because it needed landscape support. Maybe they used that as a base for the other CDMA (fascinate) ROM.
The Captivate and Vibrant both have TW 3.0.

I think both Epic and Fascinate have this feature because Samsung had to make all the TouchWiz apps and data fit in the 2GB of internal RAM, since the user may take out the SD card at any point. Since Vibrant and Captivate have 16GB of non removable memory, Samsung decided to not bother optimizing our TouchWiz as much or for allowing the removal of some of that bloat.
I vote for Odin3 and Launcher Pro - Forget the Epic Launcher
I can't bring myself to try ADW again because I don't think I can live without the Launcher Pro Plus widgets.
I have been searching but unable to really find any good information on this. I will add I have never used a alternative launcher b4, so that is new to me.
First off, why does CM7 use ADW vs Launcher pro or stock gingerbread launcher?
Second, which launcher is "best" with CM7? Stock gingerbread, adw ex, or LPP (I know people will say adw since it comes with cm7, but humor me) I know it will vary by person, but just looking for some feedback and ideas from those who have used these b4. (I know people will also say to just try em, but I like to get feedback first. Call me crazy/weird; I know, its true)
EDIT: I cant even find LPP in market?
Thanks.

I have the paid version of AWD EX and the paid version of Launcher Pro.
Personally i like AWD EX alot better. I feel it is smoother, quicker, easier to use and customize.
THE only two things i like about Launcher Pro is the sliding Dock bar and the calendar widget. That's it. Everything else in my book is sub standard. I've also been using the Zeam Launcher alot and i like it. It's very simple easy to use and pretty darn snappy.
the gingerbread launcher... i tried the one from the market and didn't like it at all. no external options at all.
I have used all 3 for quite some time on varying platforms and each have their own pro's and con's.
Stock: Have never really cared for any of the stock launchers. Nothing in particular wrong with them, but it's kinda like eating a plain bagel...you know it could be better if...
ADW EX: I've used both ADW and ADW EX and found them both to be very nice launchers. Broader spectrum of Visually pleasing accents and widgets and in place of stock bring a flavor that is very appealing and customizable...
LPP: Current launcher because of all previous statements and then some. Very, very customizable and user friendly. Takes everything the stock launcher and ADW variations can do and then some.
I must say that I have been very partial to sense ui and LPP gets me as close to that interface as possible with lots of more optimaizations and such.
Once rooted, the sky is the limit!

Hey im starting to not care for miui so much i remember one of my friends tried it on his D1 awhile back and it was very buggy he had freezes and random reboots. dont get me wrong, i would love to see miui come to the hero it would be one more rom we could shove in iphone fanboys faces. However i recently installed go launcher ex and i love it, it has become my favorite alt home laucnher and it runs very smooth and without lag. So my point is would u rather have miui or cm7+go launcher witch would be pretty much the same thing minus the lockscreen and contacts however u do get a dockbar and app drawer.
sorry for the rambling but what do yall think.
I've been using Go Launcher for a few months now, and haven't deviated since. I just like it. It's a good blend of simplicity and fancy.

You and me both lol.
adw ex just updated and it has a 3D cube effect, also it has iphoney icons...
You can get the whole go line of software and it has an miui type of feel, go weather, go sms, go launcher and go contacts.
I have a question, bought the MIUI iPhone Launcher (which is ADW heavily modified since my Milestone 2 has a locked bootloader so I can't install custom ROMs) but I'm severely disappointed because my folders look like empty black boxes, even if I throw apps inside them.
Is is happening to anyone else? I use GoLauncher, bought the MIUI theme, liked it but I liked the MIUI iPhone launcher better (big icons and stuff). But I don't want my main screens to look like a lot of empty black boxes since they're full of folders.
I'm running the latest version, 1.2.15 IIRC. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
youll probably have better luck asking in the milestone2 q/a section and yes you can install roms if you use bootstrap recovery.
I actually really like Go Launcher Ex... or at least I used to until I got Sense 2.1
I've been sticking with LauncherPro for months, just because I always run back to it.
Tried Zeam, ADW, Go. Go is pretty impressive. Fast but I do not like the placing of the app on the screens function and the app drawer.
I actually use MIUI with GO LAUNCHER and I love it.
Way to bring back a dead thread lol... My suggestion is to avoid the Go Apps altogether really... They seem to have a bad habit of needing more permissions than needed and some people are worried the apps are storing private information.
Go Launcher and Go SMS are two of my favorite apps but you have to be careful these days

Am I the only person in the world who absolutely hates ADW launcher and thinks that it is absolutely ugly? I'm an avid CM user/updater and I've grown accustomed to their stock-gingerbread with a few tweaks system. I absolutely love the rom.
One thing I cannot stand though is ADW. First of all the launcher is hideous, dragging and dropping icons on the home screen pop up this ugly non-stock looking scroll bar, everything looks samsung-ish oversized for the screen, everything is just gross from an aesthetic standpoint.
Am I the only one who feels like this? lol. Every clean-CM install I go through usually has me re-downloading TI Backup Pro and Root Explorer and completely wiping all of the bloat (ADW, skin chooser, file explorer, etc) and restoring the standard ANDROID bootup.
Anyways, just a "just wondering" comment, love CM to death, thanks to all the devs and their hardwork!
Should've added in - i replace ADW with LauncherPro, the smoothest android launcher on the market, and customize it to look exactly like stock GB (3D drawer, dock & icons, etc).

Agreed!
The first time I used CM7 I absolutely hated it because of ADW, so I ended up using another ROM. I later revisited CM7 and used LauncherPro and it turned from rubbish to fantastic.
With all the different settings on transition speeds, effects and the pure buttery smooth screen transitions you can't go wrong with it. I'm using it now on a Sense ROM.
Agreed. Launcher Pro is far superior.

I've run ADW, LPP, and Go. I prefer Go because of how well it supports folders in the app tray. The folder preview pane is very slick too. LPP's nice widgets considered, and even though I've purchased plus, I still prefer Go.
I love ADW, but you really do have to tweak the settings to get it to run smoothly. Changing the times on screen transitions can make it run quicker then LP.

I know ADW has some sort of open-source licensing where they want Rom dev's to include it as the launcher, but why doesn't Carnales, the dev of LauncherPro license his out or something? I bet 1 in 10 people who try out Cyanogen back away from it just because ADW, not knowing that LauncherPro and GoLauncher are still out there.

If you're going with Go Launcher just because of the App Tray, you might want to download the app "all apps organizer".
I use it with Launcher Pro so that I can better find the apps that I'm looking for instead of the jumbled assortment of apps.
ADW is still much smoother than Sense and pretty much any other stock launcher, but the bounce that I get from it is just icky, and a few other things about it just bugged the hell outta me.
--
Some people like it, obvious it's just a preference- so no need to criticize those who like it
I was using LPP for a while and switched to GO. Its fast and smooth running chads 2.6.38.6 beta
ADW was the reason I got turned off cyanogen mod when I very first used it, not only was it ugly as sin it also lagged like a mofo. Since I put launcher pro on I haven't ran anything since cyanogen mod and don't plan to for awhile. Hell even the stock launcher blows ADW out if the water.

I, too use LP with CM7. For me, all the other launchers I have tried (ADW, Zeam, GoLauncher) run at 30fps while LP runs at 60fps. Make quite a difference in perceived input lag.
I like ADW. I have it set the way I like it and I think it runs very smooth. but I only have 3 pages and I hide the status bar and dock bar. When I last tried LP I could not find those options, so I have stuck with ADW. I like clean and minimal and LP, I dont think, had the features that I wanted.
But every person has a different experience and a different personal preference. In one respect I agree and think that ROMs should be delivered clean with no bias to apps, but on the other hand I love that it is already there and set up for me . To be honest I am using CM7 because I didnt like some of the apps included in the stock. so if you dont like what is included then try a different ROM.
Thanks CM team for all your hard work and I appreciate the GREAT ROM that you have provided us.

Quite honestly I don't think there is any way to properly benchmark how smooth each launcher runs. However, many of them (ADW included) have a noticeable fps cap if your eye is trained to notice these differences. LP doesn't seem to have this limitation but I don't believe it is running at 60 fps. I'd wager more like 45-50 which is still very high and smooth.
I reserve the right to be wrong about this

Install your apps to internal, or give the boot an extra couple of minutes to ensure sd card is mounted.
So, I have the paid versions of Launcher Pro, ADW Ex, & SPB Shell 3D, and the Go Launcher is free.Dont always have all 4 installed, but it is super easy to swap between them, using the setting's backups.
I have seen many different comments about options, but for the most part, I know what I like about each, so I was looking for a bit of different advice/tips on the launchers
Is there any one that is better for battery life, or is that a non-issue due to how launchers work?
In the past, I saw a lot of stuff about LWPs killing your battery, but in testing on my Epic, at least for me, that was MOSTLY due to my sitting and watching the LWP to begin with. So I was wondering if different launchers cause different amounts of battery drain, when used in basically the same manner.
So, from the POV of those that write kernels and ROMs, is one more of a battery sipper than the others?
Or is the differences more all about performance, and any battery drain effect is just a non-issue?
Touchwiz is the best for speed and battery and second is the AOSP launcher. I heard Go Launcher jacks your data...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
go launcher is really good for making folders. and it has a **** ton of themes. i always found it pretty good on battery, though not as good as a stock launcher or launcherpro. spb OWNS your battery. try out the MIUI Launcher..it should be pretty good and not too hard on the battery, and it looks awesome - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220695
I have always personally felt that Launcher Pro is the smoothest and easiest on the battery. Its different for every phone because...well... every phone is different in its own way. Some roms run better on certain epics, and im sure the same goes for launchers.

It was aimed at devs, but I welcome all non-troll answers
The reason I aimed it at devs, is I was interested in the sw aspects of battery interaction, much more than features of any launcher in specific. As such, I figured those that write new kernels would have a better knowledge of how the launcher interacts with the sw when it comes to battery use than the typical person who just tinkers (like myself)
I have noticed that SPB Shell chugs battery, but I think that may in large part be due to all the extra animations it runs as default
I normally config whatever launcher I use to where I don't have any icons or widgets on my desktop at all, and this seems to redue battery drain, but it may be imaginary, and not actual reduction in drain

You have a better head on than most people around here about stuff, so I have a little trouble dismissing this as the usual herpderp whenever an app asks for permissions, hah. -_-
Well, if you don't care about non devs answering, then LP is the best for battery. However, if Launcher7 is set up correctly, it can save battery too.

No matter how I have tried to track it, the only launcher I have seen actually do worse on the battery with the same setup otherwise, is SPB Shell 3D, though I do tend to almost never run the stock launcher, which I have seen reported as the best sipper of the battery
I am beginning to think that any battery drain difference between ADW Ex, LP, and GO L is negligible, but was looking for a wider review of the matter
Smoothness has never been an issue for me no matter the launcher, as I run empty desktops, no widgets, and only icons on the scrolling dock.
My preference would be ADW; highly customization, low fingerprint, low cpu and ram consumption. Plus its based off the stock AOSP Launcher which in theory should be a great a start.
I was introduce to ADW when the first custom rom came out for HTC G1 which most of us know is a grandfather android device. At that time it was the best and only alternative launcher and til this day I really have not found anything better.

I have always tended to bounce back and forth between ADW EX & LP
I have stuck with ADW EX recently because I currently like one of ADW Black theme icon packs
As the same pack is done in pink, I can make my Epic and my GF's Epic Touch look the same, except for mine is black and hers is pink
