Sprint is falling out. - EVO 4G General

It's disappointing seeing all of the upcoming phones for other carriers such as AT&T and Verizon and then seeing Sprints line of upcoming phones.

Just curious, when sprint finally comes out and brings the HTC EVO 4G2 (or whatever it will be called), with some much better specs will people still complain about something??

This is outrageous!! We need to go to their headquarters and lynch everyone!! I can't believe that are doing this to us. I may have to go on suicide watch!

I'm not madly complaining or anything here...I'm just saying that it's disappointing. Are you telling me that when you look at all of the other phones coming out on other carriers and how much they are moving forward compared to Sprint that it isn't even the least bit disappointing to you? I'm not sitting here saying **** Sprint or anything, but the future doesn't look very promising for Sprint. And there is no guarantee on a successor to the Evo as much as I would like for there to be.

There are a couple of major mobile conferences coming up. Why not wait and see what shakes out after that?

Looks like the Evo is gonna hold it down in 2011

I'm waiting...I just don't understand it really. Heres the way I picture it currently:
The Evo is the best Android phone currently available(along with the Droid X) and has been out since summer of 2010. Verizon and AT&T are just now getting phones comparable to the Evo with the HTC Thunderbolt(Verizon) and the HTC Inspire(AT&T). Doesn't it make sense that a new device should have already been announced and wouldn't that be the most beneficial to them before people jump ship to Verizon and AT&T for the better devices? It doesn't seem like they have the timing down right. On another note, I commend Sprint on getting ahead and remaining in first for as long as they did.
On a more positive note, with the Evo developer community the Evo will continue to be a top notch device probably until fall of 2011.

I wasn't pointing you out specifically just posing a question. But to answer your question....nope I could care less about what other carriers are doing. I understand the business models of these companies. It goes in a cycle. Im sure people on those carriers were saying the same things just a few months ago when HTC/Sprint dropped the EVO, and all those guys had was the incredible, droid etc..... Matter of fact I saw those same things posted about how Vrz, Tmob better hurry up and drop something or else they would switch.
Its the same thing, except the roles are reversed. No carrier can just keep bringing out new phones every other month. Sprint is no exception. But it will come on their time, not ours. I am still getting plenty of satisfaction out of my EVO and no phone released to date can do anything my EVO can't do so I can live with it until its successor is released. Plus the EVO still has the best DEV I have seen so it will always be relevent regardless what is released. Moral of the story is someone will always be disappointed because they aren't seeing a new phone every week, but as soon as its announced they mysteriously forget about all the complaining.......
until a month later after they have had the phone and see another carrier release something else. Then the cycle continues.

HTC is having some event is 6 days. Lets just hope they release something to help sprint along. http://www.facebook.com/HTC

New Android Phone(s) for Cellular South

I just wanted to post this in the CDMA General thread...
Cellular South plans on releasing new Android phones soon.
What do you think it could be!?
http://www.cellularsouth.com/DiscoverCenter/phones-apps/android/coming-soon.jsp
** There's also rumors of it being multiple phones released. And some think one will be the Moto Droid **
Another may be the Nexus? Just throwing it out there....
I just want an android phone with a snapdragon processor... I don't which brand...
(Nexus One, Incredible, Evo...)
Im guessing the nexus also. Maybe if you are really lucky, it could be an Evo.
I dont think it would be a droid since thats verizons big promotion thing and its gunna be a phone thats at least a little caught up with hardware/function wise. And the only ones I know of are nexus and evo.
I don't know about the Evo... I know that Sprint is trying to go all out with Evo and the 4g... but like I said... I could care less as long as it has that snap!
If they did come out and sell the moto droid.. I would rather keep my hero :/

I wasnt even thinking about 4g when i said Evo.. Yeahhh im going with Nexus as my final answer. Evo's gunna be for sprint and Droid's gunna be for verizon.
FWIW, a CSouth guy on another forum said there were going to be 2 new Androids, and neither is to be Nexus.
Verizon shortened the period that it has exclusivity arrangements with handset manufacturers to give smaller carriers a shot at getting up to date phones; I think they shortened the period to 6 months, so the Moto Droid would make sense in that case, and maybe they'd be trying to appease the "need a physical keyboard" crowd.
Personally, I'm with you guys, I'd like to see the Nexus or Incredible with the snapdragon...
He didn't happen to suggest when did he?
I'm looking to move to them and was wondering if I should hold out or not.

No, didn't say when, but my guess would be that they will introduce at least one of the new phones the same time we get the upgrade to 2.1 for the Hero, so probably within the next 2 months.
If you're interested in an Android phone, I would hold out a little longer...
Maybe CSouth meant the Milestone 2??

Waiting for the Sprint Nexus One? Might want to look at the Evo...

http://gizmodo.com/5535436/sprint-wont-sell-the-nexus-one
"When Sprint's Michelle Leff Mermelstein told us that the company wouldn't be selling the Nexus One because of the "upcoming availability of the award-winning Evo 4G," it didn't change much for your average user. The Evo, like the Incredible, looks at least as enticing as the Nexus One, and even shares a lot of the same hardware. Where it diverges, Sprint says it's a "more robust, full-featured device," which, well, it is."
Sprint, like Verizon did earlier this year, has decided to not sell the Nexus One. I could never see a reason to choose this over the awesomeness that will be the Evo (even with the wonky Android upgrade schedule), but I know some people were still waiting for it. Sort of makes sense though, they were only going to run the risk of cannibalizing each other. If I was Sprint, I'd want the Evo to get all the attention too.
(Just a note: I know this is the CDMA Hero community, not the Nexus One forum or anything, but this is the group I connect with and with our investment in Sprint, I thought it was worthy of our forum. I don't go anywhere else on XDA.)
Sorry Fixxer2008
Just because the Evo is on the same network doesn't mean that I, and I suspect many others, wouldn't still consider and possibly choose the N1. While the Evo does seem like it will be the phone on Sprint to have, it also may not fit everyone's tastes. Not to mention that if Google has the ability to upgrade the N1 immediately to the next available Android OS instead of us having to wait for HTC and Sprint to figure it out, well that right there would probably push many folks to buy it before the Evo. I think Sprint is dropping the ball here because more options are always better than less.
i think i just heard fixxers head explode
It does really sadden me that Sprint has chose to do this. I really wanted a Nexus One over an EVO 4G.
A few reason as to why:
Established Community
Vanilla Android is SO much quicker & has a better battery life opposed to Sense.
I like choices.
I don't 4G coverage & probably won't 4G coverage in my area for a long time.
This is Verizon and Sprint's big mistakes. They don't want to give up control over the devices, and Google doesn't want to give them control over this device.
Google is attempting to shake up the hardware sales revenue stream that the carriers have and they are trying to stomp it out.
Unfortunately, it is us, the customers who get hurt by it.
Pretty sad, because I thought Sprint really was turning things around, but it appears they are still the same ol' Sprint.
Confirmed the information here:

i have a good offer on the moment right now but there is hardly any development for it so im not sure. i do have a feeling once the EVO comes out that will be sprints flagship android device of the year and the hero will be left behind. ill have to look up the galaxy, thanks.
I can see why people are mad and want a google phone that gets updated directly from google.
Alot of people think the evo is too big. The nexus has nice size and looks pretty sleek.
But the Evo does have much better specs, and does still get 3G.
Plus you can turn sense off, and if you root (when these guys figure out how)
You can remove the HTC lockscreen, and make and revert all the HTC apps back to stock, and the device will run faster.
But the nesux one on sprint for $99 would be a hell of a deal and would pull alot of customers who want a cool smartphone but don't need everything the EVO does.
Plus sprint better not go out of stock the first day, I want an evo
Well this is disappointing news

Samsung Holding Back Froyo!

AndroidSpin and BGR are reporting that a reliable T-Mobile Source told them that there is a fully functioning 2.2 OTA for the T-Mobile Vibrant, but that Samsung is holding the OTA back. The report then says that Samsung fears that if the OTA is released then this would devalue the upcoming T-Mobile Vibrant 4G. (I would post a link, but I do not have 8 post. If someone could for me that would be great.) Now, I know that the hardware is different, but does anyone think that Samsung may be doing the same thing to us fascinate users considering that a new Samsung LTE phone is coming out soon? This would make sense condersidering the Telus fascinate got 2.2 before we did. Now again I know the hardware is different, but it doesn't make sense they would get it before us considering the fascinate has been out longer for us and that they are more of us. It would also explain the DL09 release. Samsung may just be trying to hold us over until they decide to release 2.2 once the LTE phone sales are up. This is just something to think about. I personally am just going to flash Kaos's 2.2 once the data works

That is complete and total crap..... they shouldn't be holding back Froyo just to "improve" sales of the Vibrant 4g... the 4g should make enough incentive if someone really wants the 4g version of the phone. Also, isn't it a little early to be releasing a 4g phone when it is just now becoming available? I could be wrong!?!?!?

T-Mobile has had their "4G" out for some time now. Not quite as long as Sprint, but it's been around for a few months at least.
Just some more information. The Samsung LTE phone is suppose to hit Verizon in February. There are a few Samsung Galaxy S phones rumored to be getting froyo in March. This would leave a month for 3g galaxy s phones to still be on 2.1 while the new phones are on 2.2 or 2.3.
So the samsung LTE is probably to complete with the Iphone release 2/10/2011?
Seems totally non-bogus to me. If they already have working builds of froyo on the Galaxy Tab and 4G phones, which all contain pretty similar hardware, it's no doubt that Samsung has working froyo builds for the Fascinate.
It makes perfect sense in regards to their effed up strategy plan of continuing the release of updated phones but delaying software updates on already released ones. It's clear that these guys are holding back the 2.2 update on our device so that they can make more sales on the upcoming devices.
To be honest, it's not that my fascinate doesn't already do what I need it to do or gives me certain issues on its current software, but I just can't stay loyal to a company that continues to disregard their customers' concerns.

My sentiments exactly. The question is, will this rumor affect their timetables? This whole thing is so political...
I don't buy it. The draw of the new phones is 4G, or LTE, not the version of Android it's running. The fact that it's running 2.2 wouldn't sway someone to buy one phone over the other for the general consumer. And that is the market that matters most to the manufacturers. To the more advanced users it might make a difference, but they make up a very small percentage.
Doesn't hold weight in my opinion.

Its a bullet point. Since Samsung did not opt to be part of the droid line on verizon, any additional bullet points adds to the selling factor of the phone. Sales people will use this to push people to the newer phones, saying things like "Its got the latest Android 2.2" or "It has the version of Android that supports flash". Its just in poor taste for Samsung to do this, and to me, its the same with Apple releasing the same iPhone for verizon that's been on at&t for 7 months or so now. I wouldn't get an iphone until after there announcement later this year, because since 2008, they have released a new iphone every year. Ok, sorry, I got off topic, but as you can see other companies do similar things just to sell more phones. Looking at all the companies with android smartphones, HTC and MOTO have done good jobs keep their android phones up to date. Samsung needs to step it up.
If said source is referring to JL5, there is a reason they are holding it back...its a piece of garbage.

Count me as skeptical, the source seems contradicts himself, unless I'm misreading:
…Being that, Vibrant 4G and Vibrant have exactly same stats, added FFC and a new movie and the 4G. But i will tell you this, the original vibrant CAN utilize 4G FULLY. Yes FULLY. not what they are telling you.

Still, who knows. It wouldn't surprise me if they scheduled the update to be closer to the release date (VZW released 5.0 for the Storm 1 a day or two before the Storm 2 went on sale). If it does exist, and isn't a POS, it will probably get leaked.
I can see this, but it is stupid as the LTE feature alone should be enough to push people to upgrade. Additionally, those with Galaxy S phones have all had them for less than two years (typical upgrade timeframe). So how many people do they really think they can pursued to switch? Seems far more harmful to continue to piss off your existing user base who might consider later LTE phones at end of year or next when upgrade option is available.
I don't think they want to try and get people to switch. Its more for new sales. If the vibrant is sitting there for half the price (galaxy S phones are reaching the discounted portion of their lifespan) running nearly the same specs, minus the 4G, it will look pretty attractive to a decent chunck of consumers. If salesmen can say "this new one is faster and has a newer operating system" most people will think "new MUST be better" and blindly go for that.
Like someone else already said, it would just be a bullet point for salesmen.
from a business point of view, samsung did the right thing. Why fix what isn't broke, while making something in the future look much more desirable. They will make most of their money this way.
Honestly, the dev community is a very very VERY small portion of their clients. A couple thousand out of however many million phones they've sold... Most people are perfectly happy living in ignorance about all these damn desert names. ESPECIALLY now that they have a working GPS on the phone.
So why please a couple thousand, when they could be making millions on future phones?
Unfortunately for us, this blows! But they are a business. Businesses lie. ultimate goal is to make the dough...

For everyone who has been complaining about sprint and the lack of an EVO successor

It seems a bunch of people here have decided there's no reason to wait to hear any other announcements and sprint is just idling right now. To me, that's fairly baseless speculation, so I figure I'd counter with some more speculation that could just as likely be the reference model for the eventual EVO 2 (As mentioned in the article, if you can't be bothered to read it): http://androidandme.com/2011/02/pho...pyramid-superphone-coming-to-t-mobile-by-may/
There. 2 sides to every coin.
So, the Evo 2 is going to T-Mobile? Not sure you've properly countered anything.

I believe the OP is a prophet! He mentioned you in his OP!
Overall, I’m pretty pumped to see how this device plays out. Just because T-Mobile is picking up the Pyramid, that doesn’t mean they will have an exclusive. It is very likely that Pyramid is just HTC’s reference design for their first dual-core phoneand it could make it multiple carriers. For all we know, the Pyramid could eventually become the EVO 2.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
With the MSM8660 processor, perhaps the EVO2 could even be a follow up to the Touch Pro 2 and be the first Android-based "World Phone"... How's that for speculation?
While I don't believe the pyramid will be the EVO2. I do agree that people are complaining too much, a lot of people switched to sprint just for the EVO, so why not switch to another carrier for a better phone? Also, has everyone just up an forgot about MWC?
On a side note, if the EVO line is continued I'll bet three of my four jees that it's EVO^2

Problem with Sprint is.. even if they DO get the Evo 2.. itll likely be the only superphone on Sprint worth getting this whole year just like the Evo was last year. There's no variety at all.

Good. The more handsets they have at each price-point/performance level, the more they hafta spend on advertising and the less they have to spend on important things like network upgrades. If they have one superphone running android and one running Win7, that is plenty. You don't grow your base from the top down. Go to any real HiFi shop and see how many world-beater speakers or amps they carry. Most good shops only carry one or two items at any given price...for a reason. Most people aren't going to buy top of the line. If you have 6 superphones, you are taking on a lot of overhead, in terms of product and warehouse space, to compete for a small portion of the market. Most people still go for whatever phone they can get cheap or free.

I've bought 4 smartphones per year for the past 3 years. I am one of the people who switched to Sprint because I had to have the latest and greatest. I am jumping ship when the phone I want is available. I need variety and choices. This EVO is already so outdated.

Based on your logic, I'm not sure there is a carrier out there that works for you. And you don't "need" variety and choices...you want them. Big difference.

EVO 2 rumor for those pissed about the Echo

Walked into a Radio Shack today just as a Sprint Rep was dropping off a data sheet for the Echo.
After chatting a while with her the subject of the EVO came up because she has one too. She let slip that there are plans for a, quote "EVO predecessor" this summer. I looked at her kind of dumbfounded and said "predecessor", do you mean the EVO 2? She said yeah I meant to say the successor. She said someone from upper management told her about it at the Phoenix Open (well Waste Management Open as it is called nowadays). I prodded for more info but she said she had already told me too much.
Take it with a grain of salt though - after all this is coming from a rep.
Tapatalk'd from my EVO
That's kind of a no brainer, there is no way that sprint is not going to release another flagship device this summer. We just gotta sit tight to find out what it is.
Yeah with the evo being such a big hit.. there will no doubt be a successor .. the device alone probably saved sprint altogether ... problem is when its gonna come...I would imagine later in the year seeing as sprint will no doubt push the echo for a few ...
pretty disappointed in sprints "ace up its sleeve" but I'm sure the device will sell and at least turn some heads
the evo did save sprint. better make a new one or i will cry

I hate this about android. I spend about $500 on the "top of the line" phone and 5 months later, it'll be obsolete. all of the devs will jump to the new evo and leave evo1 under the table. just like what happened to the Sprint hero.
That's just ridiculous. Just saw the other day that they have cm7 running on Eris! When I put my hero out of service for the evo in November I was running cm6 which was pretty much the best rom out at the time. Apple upgrades their hardware annually and there is no reason sprint or HTC shouldn't do the same. When evo 2 comes out I will be the 1st in line and after a quick sale on Craigslist for this one shouldn't be out of pocket all that much. I just don't see how you can get upset about new tech. I freakin live for it!

I think she's messing with you... Sprint's gonna be plugging the Echo hardcore until they realize no one wants it, then MAYBE they'll do an Evo 2.
+1 on Evo saving Sprint though, although at the rate they're going now the Echo could be the death of it... I'll probably stay because they're the last major phone company with a true unlimited data plan. (minus the roaming cap)

No way. The Echo is a niche device, not a flagship device. Sprint knows they need a new flagship and they will have one. The Echo is just one phone, they will be releasing others.
Probably more Galaxy S-based phones... All still running Froyo 2.1 as well =/

You do realize that the G1, MyTouch 3g, hero, aria, etc still have an active dev community? Im sure development for the EVO will go on for years. As for the hero,I just looked at the dev page and an ASOP ROM was updated two days ago.

deal with it...that's technology for you...
Why are people complaining about the advance of technology? WTH? You don't want new cool stuff? Then shut up about it and get an iPhone. Sit at the platform and watch the train go by. Will that really make you feel better?
Everything gets outdated over time, just with android being new in the sense of mobile platform it is moving faster than any other currently. That happens with new technology.

I believe there's a form we can fill out if we want sprint to halt development of new phones...

Fret not at the advancement of the technology...
The evo is a phone that I'm sure will have support for a while from sprint
The hero had its run and fair share...it made it to 2.1 ota..
Galaxy s owners are the ppl who should be complaining
