[Q] Choosing a rom - EVO Shift 4G General

As stated before I am new to the android system. I am seeing all these different roms and trying to keep up with each as it gets developed. Just can't seem to choose one that would be best for my needs. I email constantly and make many calls and texts thru the day. I also need the camera to be functioning. Of course all this eats thru my battery pretty quick. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How about you just use stock with the oc kernel? If you're new to android, maybe its not the best idea to hop into testing new and upcoming roms that are missing some key features and aren't too stable yet. Wait until the problems get ironed out is my suggestion.

This is a great answer to take to heart. Not just for new users.
Half the threads for Android Development on ANY device are filled with users complaining about the things not working that are stated in the op.
Try nfinite's roms. He does GREAT work with the stock roms. Work yourself up at your pace, and always make backups!

Video ROM Overviews

I was thinking of putting together some quick video previews of the major custom ROMs floating around. Any requests as to which ones you'd like to see or think would be good to demo? It will mostly be a quick look at what each system looks like after a fresh flash, UI, menus, features of each ROM, what have you. Any input greatly appreciated!
I like this idea. Personally, I'd like too see UI overviews, a breakdown of what's been added removed, and a benchmark of some sort. (Yeah, I know, basically everything you mentioned).

Dash from SPJ does a lot of ROM reviews for the EVO as well as the HTC Touch I think.

um... all the ROMs do basically the same and almost all of them are on the stock rosie. You can see what's different in each ROM just by reading the ROMs initial thread.
this would be a waste of time

I disagree. I'm new to the evo, and to android in general. The custom rom threads frequently seem to assume you are already familiar with the rom. I've seen a lot of changelogs, that explain what is new since the last version, but that doesn't help if I've never run the previous version.
I'm currently running fresh, mostly because I had no idea which one to pick. It's been working great, so I'm in no hurry to switch, but I am wondering what I might be missing with another rom.
I think this is a great idea. With the recent news about record android sales, there will be a lot of folks coming to the evo without previous android experience. This series of videos will help them a lot.

Then I'll get started today! First on the block will be stock, Fresh 3, and CM6.
Infamousjax, you don't have to watch them.

That ROM hasn't been updated in forever (There isn't even a 2.2 port or anything).
I think bugless gave up on the evo due to ungreatful users

AOSP Froyo?

I'm fairly new to the Shift scene, coming from an Evo. Often I read on these threads that the Sense ROMs give better battery than CM7, which I have found to be true..I just think we are improperly labeling them as "Sense ROMs" rather than "Froyo ROMs". When I had my Evo, Froyo also got much better battery than Gingerbread..because of this I wonder, has any Dev ever spoken of creating a plain jane AOSP Froyo ROM/Kernel? I imagine a Froyo rom would be much smoother, better battery, and less bugs..just as it was on the Evo.
PS. Can anyone point me in the direction for a "how-to" on ROM creating? If no developers are interested in a Froyo build, I'm willing to take my n00b self to school, lol
Check out the HTC Android Kitchen over in the general section it takes a lot to set it up but has support for evo shift and there is a lot of info about it.

Sense is the UI overlay used on android so they were labled right, aosp is currently on 2.3.4 so no downgrades coming this way we are in the same boat as the evo was at launch it will take the devs time to get aosp gingerbread to its full potential but over all I'm really impressed with cm7 and very thankful for toastcfh!

I hear what you're saying..I really didn't mean that they were really mislabeled as much as I was trying to make the case that when it comes to battery life I believe that Froyo is simply better than Gingerbread..poor choice of words I suppose..I'm not trying to take anything away from the fantastic development that goes on here in regards to CM7. Having just come from an Evo in the last 2 weeks I've tried every rom available in that section and always found myself going back to CM6 due to the super speed and fantastic battery life.
I understand that 2.3.4 (and beyond) will be the future. I'd just like a solid, stable, AOSP to run till gingerbread is fully there. I don't reasonably expect any developer to take this on, that's why I asked for advice on where to go. I'm reading up on kitchens now because I'm guessing I'm in this alone, lol..I may succeed, I'll probably fail..but at least I tried lol
Edit : thinking about it I'm sure there are others here that believe Gingerbread to be stable..I just haven't had much luck with it. Whether it be battery life, gps issues, force closes, etc..
I hear you on the 6.1 for the evo it was my favorite and if I knew how to do it I would I just don't have any clue on development so I'm stuck with cm7 which isn't bad just not perfect
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
Working with the kitchen is pretty easy the coding is built in and it gives you a lot of options. Just work with it for a bit and try different things. Also I use different kernels from time to time to compare and mess with the clocking speeds setting up underclock when the screen is off to save battery. Mine right now overclocked to 1491 max min 364 normal and screen off 364 max to 364. Using evervolv and my battery last all day long med. To heavy use. I haven't had any problems with FC.

Ive tried the kitchen via ubuntu virtual box. And ive been trying to port these new sensation roms that keep surfacing over to our shift. Havent had any luck but then again im very new to it. Tried with froyo base and fail, tryed with cm7 gingerbread base when it was 2.3.3 just like the sensation ports are. Still nothing. Wish i knew how to go further but im stuck in recovery trying to flash with an "Expects 4 args got 3 args. Or expects 3 got 2." Was different between the two bases. Anyone wanna help!?

I think everyone is waiting for MIUI and CM7. Can't seem to get here soon enough lol we seem to have some Devs looking into making the current MIUI version we have more "useable" hopefully they can get us a descent release where the basic features are stable enough to be use as a 'daily driver' if not, GB will be here shortly in a couple weeks n we'll get things rolling

Really? For me battery was great, but bad 3G and no 4G killed it for me. If I would have at least had ok 3G, I would keep it, but otherwise when I leave my house, I have no internet, which is not the case on stock (or close) Roms.
The MIUI we have has great features and all, but let's face it, it's not the most attractive looking rom.
I can't wait until we have the newest MIUI, I've used it on my old Evo and trust me it blows away the one we have now. You guys are going to be so happy once we have it.
I'd use it as my daily and never change it EVER if we had it.
Unless the sense port was finished, in that case I would use that. But otherwise new MIUI is great.

It's not until you use theme manager to download themes. You can customize boot animation, wallpaper, icons, ringtones, with one click. Also, if you don't like those, you can get newer ones online at miuithemes.com, but those may not use all their features on froyo.
I'm really feeling the excitement build in the Epic community and I think its great. Things have been much more positive around here lately as well. I can't wait to try out miui and cm7 after GB source comes out, and hopefully be able to help out finding bugs and testing.
A couple months ago I was ready to ditch this phone for just about anything (even considered downgrading to an EVO) but now I think I'll be happily running the Epic for a good while to come.
For anyone who is fed up waiting for the latest and greatest, try running SFR 1.2 (froyo) with clean kernel. I am very nit picky about my daily driver and this has been flawless. Performance is much better than stock, and everything works so well I just don't feel rushed to upgrade (phone or OS) like I used to.
Right now I'm using marcusants ACS Bamboozle, but will definitely switch when (maybe if) we get GB Miui.
I have also seen an improvement in our community. The useless flaming and bickering has been toned down to a minimum, if not, just completely stopped. Its great to finally be one big happy community like before. I can say SRF 1.2 is def my favaorite ROM and daily driver at the moment, but I'm definetly looking towards CM7 and MIUI. It'll still be a while to get some stable builds done even after source is released so I hope SRF 1.3 is dropped a bit before then so I can totally leave froyo with a bang! and according to qbking77 in the SRF 1.2 development thread, SRF 1.3 is still being worked on, as well as a possible new kernel thanks to their hard work, it'll be a lot easier to wait a bit longer for MIUI/CM7 lol

MIUI just looks like a Chinese iOS knockoff. :\
Since I'm also probably going to be waiting for the next Nexus (if I can resist the SGSII) I'm also looking forward to CM7 and MIUI. I've never used either before or any iteration, but the reports on them are always great.
I'm gonna go to CM7 and set everything up, make a Nandroid Backup, then go to MIUI and set everything up with a Nandroid Backup after, because those are gonna be the only 2 ROMs I'll use.
Do any of you know how to build a kernel? I've made files to test, but don't know how to compile. I combined some files from GS CM Kernel and Epic stock kernel. Just need to know how to make a zimage. I can post the files if you want to compile.

You might want to PM thomasskull666 or Rodderik for that. They're the "kernel gurus". Just make sure u know what your doing and dnt hard brick ur phone. I wish I could help more but so far I'm looking for an extra computer to load a linux only OS since I hate to dual boot. Also, I haven't read too much into compiling yet so no help there either :\ sorry

Need a Recommendation for a stable ICS rom for everyday use? Thanks

Also if you can spare a minute please state any noticeable differences of ICS roms ..is it worth it? ..im currently using americanandroid, cant fault it but i have been patiently waiting for ICS to develop before trialing please help me out..ps ii was unable to find any threads similar to this using search .
My favorite part of ICS is the soft keys, I love them. Also the task switcher is very handy.
I like the Ice Cream Tosti ROM. Lots of neat little tweaks that the CM9 build doesn't have yet.
If being able to make videos is important to you, don't switch to ICS yet.

At the moment ICS is quite stable, definitely useable for for every day. As moschino02 said, if video is important then there is no point as hardware acceleration is not fully available just yet, only a hack (not really sure how it all works tbh). A lot of the CM9 mods are also not working yet but give it time, the devs here are working very hard.
As I said though, it is working very well for the early stage of development its in.
What you could do is make a CWM backup of your ROM and try out one of the ICS builds. But if you use and kind of a2sd script in american then I would recommend using a separate sdcard here so you don't mess up your sd-ext.
Cheers,
Evil.
Use tytung's ICS cm9 1.3.
Hey stuck around gb for a while, ics is under development for hd2. Though it works, it won't do it all, so 3-5 months more..

[Q] Latest, hottest ROM

I was on Legendary and then SimpleROM but I'm ready for a change as long as it is stable (like the ones I just mentioned). I tried reading the threads but they keep changing and some are very long.
Just wondering if someone knows since I have been on only this 2 ROMs for nearly a year.

Try out CM9.
It's pretty popping fresh.
Also, MIUI.
And in the future, we discourage best ROM threads.
Depends on how you use your phone. CM9 beta 0 is stable for a daily ROM. But If your a power user like on your phone nonstop then you will find yourself wanting a charger.
Also gotta ask the question to you want to move to the MTD side.... best bet is to read up on everything, then test out different roms till you find one that you like.
Sent from a CM9 powered Epic.
If you want a good stable Rom the marcusant rom version3 and the shake and bake theme are a nice combo. Also cm9 is also kinda nice but its still in beta
Threads are long because everyone is trying to butt hurt everyone else, and there are a lot of useless postings (such as this one). Just be sure whatever rom you use has the appropriate thanks, documentation and GPL reference or you will get blasted even as just a user.
Just try them all, go nuts, have fun! Just be sure to do whatever you can to brick your device so you can provide yourself with the logical reasoning to upgrade as quickly as possible.
Sent from my, is it safe to claim, personally semi-tweaked (but not shared) and still therefore kanged??? sammiEpic running some CM9b0 shiznizzle.....
Thanks to all that offered good advise and options.
And to clarify a few points:
1 - I did not ask what was the best ROM (I know better than that).
2 - I respect the advise of the users here and do not wish to try them all. It simply takes too much time when all the ROMs say to wipe everything clean including data. It's a very long process putting everything back the way it was. The last 2 updates I did did not update my programs so I had to install them all manually plus their data. And as some of you may know, restoring from backup is not always a good thing to do.
So... I really appreciate those that provided a few options for me to try. Will do soon. And btw I alway provide feedback to the thread on the ROMs that I try. Comes from being a technology administrator for many years.
Thanks again,
tsp

In order for someone to answer this you have to let people know how you use your phone. Are you hooled on the Touchwiz interface? Then it would require some work and getting similiar apps for CM7, CM9 or any other AOSP ROM. If you just want to update to the newer firmware and like how your phone is running now, then Sleeper or CleanGB. If you need more app space then you want to go to an MTD ROM like CleanGB MTD. At least read the OP's of any ROM you are considering to know all the features.

CM9 ICS
I've been using CM9 ICS since alpha 2 and I had to Odin my phone back to stock for some weird reason. It was so strange seeing the stock interface after using ICS. "I can't swipe notifications away? What is this vertical scrolling? Bloatware???" So yeah, beta 0 seems good enough for me for now, plus the battery life is way better than stock.
CM9 for sure. The only real issue was the phantom voicemail but there is a fix for it now (as of today).
Loving the CM9. It's like a new phone!

Tried CM9 and it was allot more stable than I expected. However it still needs work and is not as solid as stock. The lag overall started to annoy me along with other things like garbled text messaging, 4G issues, occasional reboots, and no visual voicemail, but the devs are doing a great job.
I am on Clean GB right now and will jump back to Thunderhawk when Random updates to El30.
Dont flame my opinion, please.
