I was wondering if this device has fastboot mode and whether it is accessible and how.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I suggest to install the Android ask and use the following fastboot commands.
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
*change recovery.img to whatever filename the recovery is and put it in the same directory as your fastboot.
This way you'll learn what a "rootkit" does and be on your way to learning more .

Fastboot mode within bootloader i believe.
Question in the subject. I'm just confused as to what download mode really is, and how one would use it. I know you can flash things via fastboot in fastboot mode, but what exactly is download mode and what can you do with it?

Download mode is for you to collect RAM dump with memory debug apps.
I believe download mode would use whatever tool LG uses to flash firmware. As long as you have a working bootloader there shouldn't be any need for it on a Nexus device.
Oh alright. On my old phone, download mode was used to upgrade or restore stock firmware (i.e. ODIN or Heimdall) since we didn't have any fastboot mode.

Yeah, I was confused as well. Used to have it on S II. Bootloader/Fastboot is the term here.
Fastboot is the main method of flashing, you send the files to the phone with fastboot, then the bootloader will write them to the relevantly specified partition.
Download mode allows you to connect via lgtool (the equivalent of Odin) as in you dump the files into an app. Then the app writes them to offsets in the nand.
Fastboot is much easier and safer to use.
The only reason you should ever need to know anything about download mode is if you have broken the bootloader (which I'm not going to say how to do because there will be some idiot who will try it)

I wiped everything with no rom or backup on my device (d800 using cwm touch) I get a unauthorized mssg when I try adb devices while it bootloops& no device found when in adb sideload, I can't authorize it cause I can't get past the bootloop... Any ideas? Been reading all day/night...
I don't think anyone has gotten adb sideload working for our phone as far as I can tell, anyone know how to authorize adb from only recov or bootloop? Or if you could restore a recovery made using a diff recov?

How do you get into fastboot on this device anyway? I can only get to cwm recovery and a download mode that tries to download a firmware update every time I do..

Download the factory image and extract it. Inside is a .zip file, extract that too. In there you'll find a system.img file. User that on fastboot
fastboot flash system system.img
Reboot

re install the adb drivers boot the phone into recovery , toolkit will detect your phone
Power off the phone, hold the vol+ and vol- button, press and hold the power button. This will take you into fastboot. Connect the USB cable and install the naked USB drivers.
