This is my first time using a phone without a physical keyboard. I'm trying to get the hang of using Swype, but I find that I'm faster using the stock Android keyboard (which actually better than I thought it would be). Does anyone have any tips on using Swype effectively? I've read a bunch of FAQs, etc. but I just must be a slow learner.

Just use it for a solid 1-3 days without switching back to the stock keyboard. Changing some of the settings might help as well.

I found that changing the swype settings helped my accuracy.
Settings > Locale and text > Swype Settings > Speed vs Accuracy
I changed the speed vs accuracy slider just a tad to the right so it is about 40% fast response vs error tolerance. It used to be about 20% fast response vs error tolerance.
I tried swype on the G1 and didnt like it that much. I gave it a chance on the vibrant and now i am loving it. I am impress with the prediction. You just have to give it a chance.
When I first heard of Swype I completely hated the idea, never gave it a shot
Got my Vibrant and for once decided to try it out, I'm fairly impressed on how easy and accurate it is once I got past trying to type in each letter, and the text prediction really is pretty good at deciphering my scribbles
IMO swiftkey tops them both. It predicts your current word and suggests your next word.

I couldn't stand swype. I am actually usinf better keyboard. I got it for my g1 and find it really nice for the most part. Then again i am not big on the whole pediction stuff. I actually type quite fast solo on the keuboard.

Classic!
Faster, yes... but are you actually typing real words?!?
I use better keyboard, its closest to the stock key board I have found. I've used it since my G1 and by far the best keyboard I have found. Its $2.99 but totally worth it, plus there are tons of skins for it.
I use swype in portrait and the stock keyboard if i need to type in landscape. But I can't wait until BlindType is released

I've always hated using on screen keyboards. That is until swype came along. Its accuracy and speed are pretty awesome.

Does anyone know of an app that will switch the default keyboard automatically from swype to the android keyboard whenever I am connected on bluetooth? The one thing I like about the android KB is it has the microphone icon and I can use voice to enter searches, text messages, etc. But when I am not in my car, I much prefer the swype KB. Perhaps there is a plugin for Locale that can do this???
Does anyone know how to get the physical keyboard typing sound turned on? Is it even possible? Did it come with the option on our model? Need to know how. Had it on my old TP2 and miss it. Thanks.
i would love this as well, but i don't think it can be done. iv'e gone through everything i can think of in the settings and didn't see anything.
I've only found one setting for typing noise and I'm sure it was for the soft-keyboard. I don't think there is an option for the hard-keyboard.
Yes, I found the otion for the onscreen keyboard. So logic would tell me their has be one for the slideout keyboard also. Not sure why they did this?
i would really like haptic feedback on the hard keyboard
Anyone remember the original typing sound for icq back in the days before AOL bought them? Old typewriter sounds. I loved it but it drove my roommates nuts. Lol
Yea, remember that. It's just I want the option to have sound. Sometimes it would be nice, when I'm somewhere loud.

As long as my phone doesn't make that uh oh sound when I get a message... Lol

Well I look at it this way. If the onscreen keyboard can have sound and haptic feedback. Then there has to be some kind of way to add this to the physical keyboard. Maybe trick the phone into thinking the physical keyboard is the onscreen keyboard? Just don't have the skills to do it myself.

It seems to me the hardware keyboard already has feedback and sound. I feel it when I press the buttons and I hear em too

Flex T9 keyboard free on Amazon. Combines swype and the gingerbread keyboard. I like it, what do you guys think.
Now if we can get someone to make a dark theme for it we will be set.

Thanks for the heads up, giving it a try now, this is the first thing I will have typed with it. Definitely less typos than with Swype thus far. haha, it even has gratifi. Nice.

Ha, been using this keyboard all day. I like! Don't know why I like it cause I hate swype. Been a Smart keyboard Pro user for months.
I like it. It seems to work well. I just wish it did a auto space after punctuation.

I did find that it will automatically put a . if you double space. But that doesn't help with questions.
Definitly like better than swype. I just could not get used to sliding and need to lift my thumbs. This is a great keyboard.

lol i could spend all day explaining the joke of a keyboard this is.
spend some time with it for awhile and u will see what i mean.
i rotate between swiftkey and a swype-like awesome keyboard with a prediction list that shows up while u slide ur finger around, its no longer on the market but its called shape writer. its available for download around the internet.
I like it a lot better than swype, which I use for portrait. It seems to be more accurate, and the word choice options are easier to use and less obtrusive.
For landscape, I normally use swiftkey, and I think swiftkey is much better for me. Swiftkey does a better job with correction, capitalization, and punctuation, has the option for space key to accept the main word choice, adds spaces correctly, and shows more of your typing at the top to allow for easier editing.
So, I think I'll program keyboard manager to use this for portrait and swiftkey for landscape.
Why are you guys comparing these virtual keyboards when we have a physical keyboard that's now working 100% with no key skips thanks to mkasick? Am I missing something? For quick texts, I sometimes use Swype myself but I use the physical keyboard for just about everything else and since the fix, it's been terrific.
Dose any one know of a way where I could set up my phone to where I could set it to have swype when in portrait and a different keyboard when in landscape?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA Premium App
The easiest thing you could do is use a downloaded keyboard such as FlexT9 or SlideIt that allows you to type in Swype style or standard tapping keyboard all on the same keyboard without any menus. Just tap when you wanna tap and swype when you wanna swype. I do that on one of my phones
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I know I can do that, but I really like using "hackers keyboard" in land scape and swype in portrait. Third would be especially nice if I could do that too on my xoom
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA Premium App
Ok. What you need is the application called Tasker. Basically, it allows you to run things and change settings based on various conditions of your phone. Its an automation app.
One of the conditions you can choose to use is the orientation of your phone. So in Tasker you would set it to change tthe proper setting (keyboard) on orientation change and it will begin to do this on its own.
That's all I can think of.

Thanks man, il check it out

After about three hours of playing with tasker, which I got to admit is absolutely awesome app, it doesn't not however allow for two different keyboards to be used one in portrait and a different one in landscape

I'm sorry it won't let you do it the way you want it to. I just tried it. The only thing I could get it to do was when I turned it landscape, to open up the 'Input Method' options. But that's a pain in the ass. I really am sorry it won't do what you need. That was honestly the only thing I could think of that would do what you want without using a keyboard that does both.
Heu dont get me wrung its a great app that I'm already hooked in.and will be on my phone fire some time to come. I wounder what it would take to write and app that will do it. I have some apps I've made, but most are informational, and one interactive to control my dvr. Gauss il just have to start playing with it

Im not sure if this topic has been discussed here but wanted to mention it anyway.
I was amazed at how fast I was typing on the stock Samsung keyboard. The only thing I didnt really like was the settings key being on the layout. There were times that I was accidentaly pressing it which would disrupt what I was typing.
I consider myself as an Android newbie and didn't know there were alternative keyboards out there.
So I went ahead and tried Perfect Keyboard and wow, let me just tell you that I am typing with so much more accuracy and speed. I went ahead and purchased the full version.
I dont work for them or anything but I really recommend the app.

Gave it a two week trial. Couldn't forgive the lag when initially typing. Drove me up the wall waiting on it to catch up. Other than the lag it was decent but still loses to thumb keyboard IMO.

I own Swift Key X and if you type slow the predictions are neat but it sucks when trying to type fast. Very inaccurate even with the fast typing setting.

What I miss from Swype keyboard is the ability that Samsung one has to detect you are using the pen and switch to handwriting. Swype + hand writing when using the pen, that's what I want
I really like the swiftkey x predictions but the spacebar is too narrow and I keep hitting the period. I love the split 5 inch mode of thumb keyboard - much more comfortable for me.
side note - when handing your phone to others, its best to use a non predicting keyboard as it can really throw them off.

Ics keyboard for me with aggressive mode.
Its really easy to type and corrects any miss presses.
Its available from the market for free.

I gave Swift Key a try as well. It seemed like it detected my Note as a tablet as an error prompt of some sort appeared when I initially ran it.
"Wrong version, this is a tablet. Please download the correct version" or something likr that. Worked fine but still ended up with Perfect Keyboard. Ü
