What Class was the MicroSD card that came with your Epic? - Epic 4G General

My original Epic came with a class 2 16gb card. I lost my phone and Asurion sent me a brand new epic w/ a class 4 16gb card.
Just curious what everyone else has

Mine came with a class 2 , but I upgraded to a class 6

Class 2. I just bought a class 10 though. =D

Class 2 / suxorz. Haven't seen a real need to upgrade yet and the 32gb class 10 is a little out of my price range for an SD card.

So did I get lucky through asurion?

What.is the fastest class the epic can use? I think a class 10 is to fast for.the epic. It was made for 1080 recording.

I don't know about the Epic but if you're transferring large files/lots of files to your Epic's microSD from a computer you can take full advantage of class 10 speeds.
The only microSD writes worth mentioning on a mobile device like this would be photos and videos; the Epic only does video at 720p which slower cards most likely can handle.

Mine came with a class 2. When Assurion sent me a refurb epic, there was no sd card with it so I kept using the original.

I got a class 2 samsung card with mine.

I think the epic can support up 2 a class 6

Uh... no. Any device that supports microSDHC will support any speed (unless you're talking about windows phone 7 where they need some kind of retarded certification).

Based on my experience, any class microSD will work in the Epic, but I don't think the Epic will take advantage of the speed of any cards higher than class 4. I have the stock 16gb class2 card, and a class 6 card. File transfers are about the same speed on the class 2 card weather it's in the Epic, or in my PC's card reader. However, even though the class 6 card is faster than the class 2 card in both situations, it is significantly faster in the card reader than it is in the Epic. It appears file transfers a capped at a certain speed when it's mounted in the Epic regardless of class.

Class specs can be really misleading and sometimes outright lies. In tests, Sandisk class 2 cars have outperformed some other manufacturers class 4 or class 6 cards.

Hence the reason they cost more.

I copied all my music to my the sandisk class 4 card asurion sent me and it transferred significantly quicker than it did on my samsung class 2 card

Anyone using a class 10 card?

Hey. Just curious how many of you have replaced the stock 16gb class 2 sdcard with class 4,6 or 10. Can you chime in with your inputs on performance between these classes. I know the theoretical transfer speeds, but I am curious how they actually perform in day to day use. Would jumping from a class 2 to class 6 be noticeable, or a class 6 to class 10?
Thanks
I am interested to.
Have just upgraded to an Ebay 16gig Class 6. Speed is faster than a Class 2 but not sure if it is a Class 4 or class 6.
Tempted to buy a 8gig Class 10 but struggling to find a reputable source of these.
In case you don't know Class x denotes the write speed. Class 2 has a 2meg/sec. Class 6 has a 6meg/sec write speed. Also gt a increase in read speed. All must be good for the HD unless the Interface is slower than the card??

From my reading and investigation, not many devices out there support such high speed, I'm thinking phone isn't one of the device that do. I would like to see someone do some testing and see if there is a difference on a HD2 between a class 6 vs class 10.
I didn't know they had a class 10, but I'm running a class 6 and I can tell the difference from the 16gb stock card. Loading Android is a lot faster too.

I have a class 10... Its a great diference.
I've got a couple of 16Gig class 2s and a 4Gig class 10. I can certainly tell a difference. I haven't done any empirical testing but gut says it's almost twice as quick. The difference comes when you multitask, getting a couple apps open, app loading, etc.
The problem with the 4Gig is the obvious lack of size. I'm thinking of buying a 32Gig class 4.

Looking at numbers alone, a class 6 is three times faster than a class 2 and a class 10 is five times faster than a class 2 so upgrading from a class 2 would appear to be a sure fire bet in both cases
In comparison a class 10 is only 1.6 times faster than a class 6.
So I think I will stick with my class 6 for now until class 12+ comes out.
So in conclusion do you guys think a faster SD card is necessory? because once xda team finish develop a perfect android rom i believe they are gonna make it a rom, in that case we would'nt need a faster SD card, But i really wonder if a faster SD card improves the performance? Can someone kindly provide a video for this ? Thanks ,,
class 10
I have a 16gb kingston class 10, compared to my Transcend 8gb class 6, not that much difference, compared to my Class 2 16gb that came with the phone? huge difference.
I'm now going out, to buy a 16GB classe 4 , i think is sufficient, given that in September Cttula will provide NAND, and the class will no longer important, and I'd rather have more space for my photos and videos, in vacation than a business card 8GBclasse10 faster.
Is the ETA for NAND September?
Nand speed vs. Class 10 card?
Anyone know what the read/write speed of the nand memory is as compared to the say the read/write speed of a class 10 card? I know it should be faster, but is it really that much faster?

SD Card Class

Dear xda-community,
a simple question: Which classes do you consider reasonable and which are overkill? Class 2 , 4 , 6 or 10?

There are only very small differences in real-world performance in MicroSD cards no matter what class they are (unlike "normal" SD cards). Even a class 2 will give no problems with HD video recording. I've got a 16 GB Sandisk Class II. Cheap. No problems. What more could we want?
Agreed...
Phone's do not have great demands on memory cards, not even when writing at the highest video frame rate.
I have quite a few Micro SD's to choose and use.
Although I'm using a Sandisk 16GB Mobile Ultra which has a Class rating of 4, in real tests it performs much much faster but is quite really overkill for the Phone.
My recommendation, don't get a cheap Class 2 but go for a solid & reliable card.
It's worth paying that little extra on say a Sandisk Class 2 than a low rated unbranded Class 4/6.

As I have already mentioned it's not so much the class rating that matters but more the quality of the card.
The matrix of the Galaxy S's buffer run does not need anything great.
As such a reliable Class 2 would suffice.
As an example the Sandisk 32GB Class 2 easily provides acceptable video frame rates.
I recently ran this card and my present Sandisk 16GB Mobile Ultra card and visibly there was no difference in both saving camera video's or showing either a camera video or movie.

Why? Please let me see some benchmarks that can convince me there is any idea in buying a class 4 instead of a class 2.
Check these benchmarks: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1468705
So, just buy a cheap 16 GB Sandisk class 2 - anything else will be a complete waste of money.

Again agreed.
The answer here is in the name Sandisk.
MoWa22 also fully understands and appreciates it's the brand what delivers and not so much the Class rate.
Sandisk cards often perform much faster than their same class counterparts.
Good link btw.

32gb micro sd fast enough?

will the 32gb mirco sd class 2 be fast enough to run apps off the sd card without problems?? or should i sacrifice size with speed and get a 16gb class 4 or 6?
yes its plenty for this handset. many many many people already have theses cards in the droid and the evo and all have had much success with it.
Works fine for me.

I use a class 10, to reduce the current draw. If I were to run it a maximum speed it would be limited by the heat it would generate. So in affect it would be limited by the current it consumes. Not talking about leaks, but overall. Slower sd's are also limited the same way but consume their limit at slower speeds. Since the faster cards are limited (maxed) at higher speeds they consume less at slower speeds, because they are rated at uamps/read/write.
Engadget posted about a class 4 just the other day, due to my post count I can't link. But kingston does have one, even though it's much more expensive. If you're running out of room I would suggest only keeping vital media files with you, and using subsonic to stream anything else.
i wanted the extra space so i can use the phone as an ipod since my zune crashed
Class two is damn slow, I did in fact notice a good speed jump with my class 6

[Q] Desire Z SD card class?

Hi,
Does anybody here knows which class is the 8gb micro sd card included in the Desire Z??
Not 100% positive on this but I remember reading somewhere that it was only a class 2 card... =/
I got a class 4 card, but seems to be a bit of lottery.
I've read that some got class 2.
Mine was 8 GB, Samsung, Class 2. And it got replaced right away with a 16 GB Class 10.

Is there any point in a class 10?
Can the Z handle it? I know the Pulse has a limit of class 6...
Also - nice card.
Damm I hope I get a class 4 but how can you know which class is the sd card? Does it say on it?
Yes typically the card will have the class printed on it.
Remember though the class is a measurement of the MINIMUM speed the card is capable of handling.
Ex: Class 4 can write at a MINIMUM of 4 mb/s. I have a kingston class 4, 8GB card that I have tested thourougly and it regularly writes at 8+ mb/s.
Not sure where you draw the line on what is overkill for an Android Device. I know on other devices, I.E. SLR Cameras, a slow/bad card can have a big impact on the way things run...
Came with a Samsung Class 2 8GB for me, replaced it with an San Disk 16GB Class 4.

Yes, it can handle the Class 10. The only real benefit is when doing 720p video recording. Most of the time, anything over a Class 4 will feel the same in day-to-day usage (other than video recording).
The other advantage is that if you transfer files to the phone, it'll be somewhat faster.
Also, the card you get with the DZ, it show the class right on the card itself. In my case it was a Samsung 8GB MicroSDHC Class 2. Replaced with a Kingston 16GB MicroSDHC Class 10. <3
Here's a somewhat subjective read on the topic: http://pocketnow.com/android/does-using-a-faster-sdcard-make-your-phone-faster
I don't know if you can see the difference between Class 2 and Class 10 on the Desire Z. Maybe running some apps that install on SD Card is a little faster, also saving photos, browsing through MP3s, playing videos, etc.
When moving large quantities of data (bigger files), there is an increase in speed, e.g. 18 MB/s (Class 10) vs. 10-12 MB/s (Class 2). I expect the differencte to be the same with small files, but I haven't tested yet. Maybe it's not worth the double price tag, but I needed 16 GB and chose to go with the fastest option available...
Mine and everyone else I know with a Z or G2 came with a samsung 8gb class 2 card.
I have now put my 8Gb class 4 in, but I might look to get a bigger class 4 or 6 card soon.

I recently picked up a 32gig MSD for my Evo as I kept running out of room on the 16gig card. I went from a 16GB Class 6 to the latest Class1 or 2 that SanDisk has. My phone takes around 3 minutes to boot now at best. Looking at gallery or anything like that is SLOwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. the lower the class number on the card, the slower the transfer rate. So your 16gb class 6 may have less room, but its way faster than a 32gb class 2. Dont know if this helps or not.

+1. I switched from the Class 2 8GB card that came with it to a Class 10 16GB card and the differences are staggering. I never benchmarked my class 2, but I get around 17.8 Mbps read/write on this one. On my 8GB card it would take about nine minutes to transfer a movie from my phone, now it takes under a minute.
that isnt always true that cards are just slower. The class system is a min spec system meaning they have to atleast hit this to make it they can be well over it depending on the chip used
Most people benchmarking the San disk 32gb cards are finding them to perform closer to class 4 then the indicated class 2. Check out the thread in the accessory section. Perhapse your card is defective.
Sandisk. The Yugo/Walmart of the mem card world. None of the pro photographers that shoot digital that I've met will even touch them.
