Hi guys, I hope you can help me.
I have just rooted + flashed my motorola defy plus for the first time (on any device for that matter)
I installed 2nd init, version 0.6.... or something.
Put a rom, kernel and google apps on my sd-card
Then I turned usb-debugging off and rebooted my phone.
Now I can get into bootmenu, and this is what I do:
1) go to recovery
2) select custom recovery
3) then it says: Clockworkmod Recovery v2.5.1.8
E: Can't open /tmp/recovery.log
4) I then select wipe data/factory reset
5) then it says this: Formatting DATA
Formatting CACHE
FORMATTING SDEXT
No app2sd partition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext
Formatting SDCARD:/.android_secure
Data wipe complete
E: Can't open /tmp/recovery.log
6) After that i select install zip from sdcard
7) then I select choose zip from sdcard
8) then I select the zip file containing the rom
9) And it says: Finding update package
Opening update package
Installing update
E: Can't make /tmp/update_binary
Installation aborted
Now I can't go any further and can't use my phone at all
I hope u guys can help me, and that I haven't F*ed up my phone
I have a quite similar problem.
On a defy+,rooted 2ndinit installed, backup-ed first, download the new quarx05/03 ICS, put the zip on sd, wipe data, reboot and start to install ics, but the message was
''Finding update package
Installing update
E: Can't make /tmp/update_binary
Installation aborted"
Thanks to the previously backup I can use may phone as usual.
What I have done wrong with de ICS installation?
Thanks
PS. Sorry for probable a dummie question:What we have to do with md5 zip near the CM9 Jordan.zip?
A little help please about the subject?
Thank you

Does you disabled the usb debugging before flashing?
Yes I do, but nothing change,
Thanks
if I'm not mistaken the last release of 2nd init is not compatible with defy. Try to check this on the development forum. I hope I have been of help.
I'd tried with both 1.0.7 latest and 0.6.1.
With latest, the phone is blocked.
Thanks
I had used this. Try with it
P.S. sorry for my bad english.
Tried, the same errors,
Thanks
I don't know. Sorry. By the time i had used that.
I think you need to go to stable recovery after you wipe your data from custom recovery

I think you need to go to stable recovery after you wipe your data from custom recovery
What do you mean by "stable recovery"? You talk about version 0.6. of 2nd init or something else?
Can you show a step-by step procedure?
Thank you in advance.
However, which is the procedure to un-root a defy+ and to have it with the original, fresh system?
I had flash a new SBF, root with Unlockroot v2.3, anything else doesn't work, 2ndinit v2.0 stable, wipe data/cache/dalvik (same errors), try to install cm9-ics, the same error "Can't make /tmp/update_binary"
What the f.....?

Hi, I have exactly the same problem.. Trying to find a solution but is quite difficult. First I thought it has something to do with the partitioning, as stated in THIS topic. But, in THIS topic, people say that partitioning the SD card is not necessary at all..
@Cretu22: Yes stable recovery is CWM 0.6
Don't install stable recovery! I too faced this issue when I flashed using stable recovery. In snd init install Latest recovery and then try flashing your ROM. That should work..
I did choose the stable version indeed 0.6.7.
Now i did uninstall it and installed the latest 1.0.7, but when I reboot my phone it won't get into the boot menu but just boots into android. Tried it several times, but only with 0.6.7 I seem to be able to get in the menu

Yes, its working Pressing the volume down button was not necessary with 0.6.7, that was what went wrong. Now the zips installed like a charm
i know the answer and is very simple
the problem is that you cannot create that specific folder.... because it already exist, cmp (connected music player) creates it, just delete it from SD and done!

thanks, its just strange that the 2-3 roms i have tried have all returned that error message, I will download the rom you linked and get back to you.....
is that rom to go on with odin, as currently i have stock recovery......?
no joy with the linked rom......
same thing happened, i can successfully get it rooted and flash recoveries no problem......
is it possible its a sd card problem.....
also, when i go to restore the back up i make before flashing the rom, it reverts back to a brand new handset, so i need to set it all up again, put in my Google account details etc.......all my apps return obviously, but this isn't meant to happen is it......
it really is confusing me, all the other devices I have had in the past and currently have flashed ok........
when i wipe before the flash, its just the default factory reset, cache, dalvik I do , is this correct?
That should be fine, it is possible the sd card is corrupt or not communicating properly with the recovery. You could always put the rom on the internal sd card.... Just don't factory wipe or you could loose the rom you are trying to flash...
That didn't work either......so frustrated with this.......
Can someone go through the exact procedure....I know there are guides but personal experience s are best.....

thanks....
I have been using twrp mostly....i don't believe the default wipe setting includes the system partition format...........could the absence of this formatting cause problems every time?
finally managed to flash a custom rom.......
the trick was to install the zip without any sort of wipe, then do the wipes after successful installation......
weird eh....
I updated my phone to latest liquidsmooth rom two days ago and the phone freezes and restarts/reboots randomly like sometimes when im on phone/ playing a game/ using browser/ connected to charger. Yesterday I changed rom to latest carbon rom. Did install (3 wipes) as told in the thread but im still having the reboots.
Im using TWRP recovery and had used Utility 1.10 to go back to stock from Energy rom with safestrap recovery.
Can tell me whats the prob? Is it the kernel problem?
Have you tried upgrading or reflashing TWRP and then doing a clean install of Carbon? Its probably worth doing a fresh download of each first just to make sure you cover all your bases. These reboots were happening to me a few months ago and it drove me mad. following these steps fixed it for me.

Honestly, if you're using SafeStrap, that might be your problem. Remove SS and flash the ROM in TWRP. If your bootloader is unlocked, you don't really want to use SS. Also, make a stock backup in TWRP, prior to flashing. This way, it will be easier for you to recover in the future, and you won't need to go through the painful process of fastboot.

Thanks man. I will upgrade TWRP or reinstall it first. Thanks for that tip. Will post again if it doesnt work.
Still having those restarts. Really irritating. Froze and rebooted 4 5 times today morning while I was on call and trying to message. I reflashed reinstalled everything. I used both Utility 1.10 and 1.20. Im getting reboots even the stock ROM after using the Utility. I am confused which Utility I should be using. I had no issue of rebooting before flashing using Utility. Can someone give me exact procedure to reflash so that i know i am not missing out anything.

you might need to do a clean install.
- what version of TWRP are you using (anything other than 2.4 should be fine)?
- to perform the clean install, mount system, then try wiping everything (system, factory reset, & internal storage) - DO NOT WIPE external SD (I presume this is where you store the ROM files
- after wiping, reboot recovery, then install whichever 4.2.2 ROM you want follow by the GApps (use the 3/2013 version)

Since TWRP wasnt working for me, I tried flashing with CWM recovery by hashcode. Still had reboots. I was using TWRP 2.3.2.3
When you say wipe everything, does it include 'modem' and 'pds'? Saw these two options also inside Mount/Format menu of CWM recovery.
Also there was an option 'Mount sdcard' (internal I suppose) but when i click it nothing happens it remains as Mount sdcard. Rest of it changes from Mount to Unmount. Is there some problem with that?
Do I have to just Mount system only? Also after rebooting recovery do I have to mount system again?
I try again as you said meanwhile.

nope, just system/factory reset/internal storage.
yes, make sure everything is mounted (checked) so that they read "unmount"

Did exactly like said. Got into CWM recovery. Mounted system. Formatted system, data, cache, sdcard. Did factory reset and wiped the caches. Then rebooted recovery. Then installed the ROM, 3/13 gapps, gsm fix. Reboot system. Still no use. I got 2 reboots in 5 mins in the ROM. I checked the md5 of the files and its ok. Dont know what else to try?

are you flashing a kernel at the same time?
I would recommend trying a basic 4.2.2 ROM right now - like unoffical AOKP.
another problem could be the GApps or GSM fix. try installing just the ROM without the GApps perhaps?
carbon was very solid too. unfortunately, I can't help you with the GSM fix, as I am CDMA.

PS. Should I flash another kernel with the ROM just in case ? I have been only installing ROM and gapps only till now.

Hi, everybody!
I am stuck with the problem, I cannot solve, and cannot google.
I saw a lot of similar, but none of the directions helped me to fix my phone.
I've got my Nexus 4 which was a great phone until I updated it to 4.3, some of the screen portions became senseless on some applications (starting from SMS, to some game apps).
I was suggested to downgrade or change ROM, which I am trying to figure out right now.
I've rooted my phone with SuperSU-v1.85 and installed Clockwork-6.0.4.3.
Once I've done it, I was trying to load an images of cm-11 and gapps-4.4 with
adb push
it finished all operations in cmd, however, I got
E: Can't mount /sdcard
Thus, I've tried to install all zips from sideload and my cmd.
I didn't touch kernel.
Once I've done this, I tried to reboot, but Cyanogen stuck, running circles.
I've tried to do factory reset, clear cache and dalvik, however none of those worked.
I also have been doing this with a more stable release (cm-10.2.0), but I got same thing.

Just tried it.
Didn't work out with MIUI.
Just put the files directly onto the phone either by downloading them on it or transferring normally over USB.
Reboot into recovery
From here you got options but to make it simple do a full wipe. A full wipe is deleting everything but your internal storage. That includes / system /data and everything else your recovery shows but the internal storage. Then just flash the ROM zip and gapps zips from your internal storage after the wipe and reboot
If you delete your internal storage you will wipe out the zips you just put there. Along with your media. Pictures music and whatever else is on there
Wiping your data will wipe your apps. So if you want, back them up with something like titanium backup prior. They will still be there after you flash the custom rom as long as you don't wipe your internal storage.
Does anyone have any ideas why this rom would fail to install on my Manta. MD5 checks. During the install, it displays the first two system msgs (formatting /system, installing system) and then fails with an error message. I have tried this clean, dirty, etc. But, I can re-install AOKP MR1 4.3.1 with no errors and put everything back like it was. I really want to try this ROM!
Oh, and I'm using the latest version of TWRP to try to install it. Thanks for any help.
