The phone is pretty much a Vibrant with a front camera and NFC. Hopefully we can get some drivers for the new BT, WIFI and GPS.

Since 2.2 has gone so slow for the Vibrant, I wonder how long we'll have to wait.

I'm pretty sure since CM likes Dev phones, once the NS goes on sale he will work on it and whatever he does with that is likely to get pushed to us.

I notice on the tech specs it doesn't even record 720p video? I guess it'll be easily hackable to do it, but still...

Is the AMOLED screen the same? (As in... pentile RGBG matrix?) That's the only thing that would hold me back...ugh.

,Alright time for samsung to release some freaking code.

The phone is quite a let down, but this is necessary. Google needs to use devices that have specs in the wild. Coding on a phone with a dual 1.2 GHz processor with next gen GPU and tons of RAM would only make for an OS that is expensive to build phones for, and an OS that cannot be easily backported to older/supported devices.
That being said, I'm not touching it. Too bad it's not Moto or HTC. Samsung is out, AFAIC.
Apple is about to refresh the iPad, so Android Tablet will face tough competition there.
With the release of WP7, and the patch coming up, Android phone manufacturers are going to start facing stiff competition from low-cost builders like Acer, etc. for the phones, especially since those phones do not require anything near the in-house developer work that Android phones need. They need to start standardizing the hardware better so that the end-user experience is better (update, etc.) and the the performance and developer experience can compare to that of WP7 and iOS.

I don't see anything wrong with the Vibrant's screen. Responsive, sexy, sleek.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Vibrant screen a lot. The ONLY gripe I have with it is the pentile matrix, which makes text look grainy/fuzzy compared to normal LCDs. It's not an AMOLED thing, it's their decision of RGBG instead of RGB for each pixel (technically RGBG is 2 pixels). The Nexus One has the same type of thing, but the screen is 3.7" so it's not as noticeable. On a 4" screen it's much more pronounced... I suggest you don't compare text to an iPhone or MT4G so you don't get annoyed when you see what I'm talking about =)

S doesn't have an SD. With built in Apps2SD, I guess they felt they didn't need it. 16GB is a lot of space.

I'm not getting the S. I was going to if it was dual core but there is no need to now. My Vibrant will morph into a Nexus S shortly...

Ah, I only notice that once in a while. I have bad eyesight anyway!

Last I heard, Samsung was going to Tegra chips, not Qualcomm. If those specs are true, I'll likely go elsewhere for my next phone.

This makes no sense... Adreno 205 is actually a downgrade from what we have.

Doesn't matter, never again am I getting a Samsung phone (I do however love the developers for putting such effort into being the software updaters of the Fascinate). Next phone is a Bionic, guaranteed.

Yeah, at best, it'd be on par with what we have. The only thing that combo has going for it is multi-core.

Why? If they leave the phone completely open as they have done with this, devs will come on board and fix whatever issues there are. You can always fix the software side, but you can't fix hardware.

Unless Samsung makes their phones out of something a little more solid than plastic, and improves theirs GPS, call quality, and signal, Motorola is doing to have the edge in all these areas. Themes and custom roms are good enough for me, and Tegra 2 is speedy enough to last for a pretty long time.

For me, if it keeps being 800x480, then better wait for qHD devices...

BGR has a review of the Atrix. Here is what they say about the qHD screen:
"The 4-inch display on the ATRIX packs a whopping 960 x 540 pixels into what Motorola is calling a qHD display. While the resolution is quite high, the display to us still looked pretty pixelated. It’s a little odd that the display on the Motorola DROID X actually looks better than the qHD display, in terms of clarity. Colors, however, look great and the panel is very bright and evenly lit. The screen on the ATRIX also fares very well in the touch sensitivity department with a solid and reliable capacitative touch screen."

More pixels doesn't mean better. The Droid X screen isn't very good to begin with, and they say it looks worse than that. The youtube videos of the Atrix from CES don't flatter the screen either. Unless Google optimizes everything for the qHD display, it only has limited uses and with this screen at least, many visual drawbacks. qHD on the Atrix, another numbers game with little gain.

A display is only as good as the media its displaying. If Moto doesn't beef up their icons, then the extra res wont matter. That being said, the phone is capable of much better resolution than any phone, bested only by the iPhone, however, the SF has us all spoiled in the color depth and clarity dept.

Isn't the sub pixel density much higher on the new samsung screens? If so, count me in. This phone is pretty good as is, has a great dev community and with a better screen and faster internals, what's not to like? Please don't say "lack of froyo on the fascinate," because it did take a long time, but we have it now.

Its not the "lack" of froyo, my friends refuse to mod their phone and they dont have it. Its the lack of support, I really used to like samsung, but in overall product I was really let down by this product.
I am taking it as far as I might not get one of their TVs now, I have a friend who had to get his replaced, and my dads 3D wont work. Just feels like samsung is falling down all around me.

Looks like the only way I'll ever see 2.3 (or anything official beyond 2.1) will be by buying up a GS2

The pixel density is claimed to be higher, but there was a side by side done with those screens, and it wasn't that much of a difference to the naked eye. I wouldn't get my hopes up....just sayin'
And you have to realize, we have it, and its floating around the internet now, but most users neither have the time or the know-how/balls to install something like that. Those are the people I truly feel sorry for, they're getting duped.

Judging from the video reviews of the LG 2X, the browser and overall phone seem much more fluid on the 2X. Try loading up engadget or pocketnow.com and it's annoyingly slow to browse on the Atrix. Even my 1.5 year old Ipod touch browses better than this phone. I tried Firefox, and it's a little bit better, but not my much.
Another issue: The phone freezes up sometimes opening text messages. I'm also getting error messages like "the message must contain valid recipients and content" even though I'm immediately "replying" to a message...lol
Overall feel = too much plastic.

The experience with this phone seems to vary a lot...
I've had almost no issues and everything seems to run exceptionally smooth to me. I'm coming from an iPhone 3GS and browsing is without a doubt better on the Atrix. I can scroll entire pages like engadget without it hesitating to load while my iphone is constantly having to pause for a second to make the page viewable if I scroll beyond a crawl. I've used my friends iphone 4 quite a bit as well and I'd have to say that I think the atrix works better for browsing than that as well. Definitely closer than my 3GS, but the atrix seems to handle it just a little bit better.
Texts have worked fine for me... nothing spectacular but not worse than other smartphones I've used.
Build quality definitely doesn't seem to be the same as my 3GS, but I like the design of the atrix a bit more. It's hard to beat the "solid" feel of the iphone though. I'd say the atrix is at least on par with the average smartphone, but definitely not the best.

Webtop access kit - Blurry HDMI Output
I am having a very hard time deciding to keep this phone. There are things it does so well and others are a clear miss.
The HD dock kit (with the keyboard/mouse) brings up a massive limitation on this phone when connected to a HDMI monitor. Out of 4 HDMI monitors and TVs I own, there is not one that is an exact native resolution mode that is supported by this phone. The 720p modes come close to my 720p monitors but there is no support at all for 1080 modes.
This makes the video out look like crap on these monitors, like using S-video in or something. Most of the video modes seem to be from the old VGA output connector days like 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 etc. Why?
The output quality is no where even close to what you are used to on your PC because of this. If you were lucky enough to have a monitor with a supported native resolution then mabey it would look correct. As it is, the text is painfully blurry to look at in todays crisp digital era.
Now that the desktop mode is unusable because of crappy video out mode support, major functions of this Atrix are gone.
Anyone else notice this? I thought I should post this to give others a heads up on these accessories.

I'm curious how many people having issues have rooted their device. I rooted mine the day I got it, but reversed the root after seeing some issues others are having. Root access doesn't mean much to me anyway.

I find that when I try to move quickly through a task or throughout the phone, it misses registered touches. I have no problem moving about exactly the same way on my Inspire, Captivate, or my previous iPhone. And then again, I saw a thread asking about screen responsiveness and everyone said it was great, with one person saying it was the best. Which was the exact opposite of my experience. I'm back using my inspire, trying to decide if I want to exchange (could've gotten a bad unit) or just return it.
*ps - the screen leaves a lot to be desired. Feels like I'm using a "dumbphone" from years ago. I just don't think it looks any good and there are apps that look distorted because of the new resolution.

I went from using the captivate and i can hardly tell a difference between the two screens. The screen is the least of this phones problems anyhow.

"First on the block syndrome"
Some are happy or don't want to admit their early rush may have been too early.
Others read the specs and expectations are not met.
Still others are happy with their choice and understand being the first release may not be perfect and have the patience to wait for the inevitable upgrades and ROMS.
As for my I am usually last on the block and am rarely disappointed (except with iphone)
A hotrodded Captivate will likely be slicker than a first release Atrix despite the specs

The Atrix browses the web so much smoother than my overclocked Captivate.
When I loaded up a page on the Captivate, it wouldn't let me scroll at all until it was almost completely loaded. And when I did, it would show me some grid of blank space where there should have been website, and I would have to wait for it to load before I could see what part of the page I was on.
On the Atrix, it loads the whole webpage much better and there's hardly any lag at all with browsing and scrolling. I think your expectations are too high. Tone it down a notch and take a step away from the hardware sheet, then make your judgements.

Coming from a captivate my only complaints are the lack of the s amoled screen. At first i thought this phone had lag but now that ive been using it for awhile i notice that its the refresh rate of the display. Anytime the screen moves it gets slightly distorted. Opening apps and transitioning from screen to screen are snappy. Out of the box this phone blows the pants off my captivate. Everything just works so far.

I had problems with screen responsiveness when I switched to launcher pro, but after switching back to motoblur the problems went away.
I swapped my HTC Inspire for this phone, and my initial reaction was to return the Atrix. Yes the screen does feel like a dumbphone compared to my Captivate and the Inspire, but if you dig deeper you'll find it's mainly the color yellow that throws it off. It feels like a television that needs to be calibrated badly.
Voodoo sound and color helped the Captivate, maybe someone will do the same for the Atrix, before I slam it into a wall hopefully.

If you guys arent happy now then you never will be. I suggest you return your Atrix immediately and go back to whatever phone was so great before you went with the Atrix. Complaining on talk forums never accomplishes anything except to make the poster look like a whiny little *****.

I own two Captivates that are both faster than the new Atrix 4g that I just got. The Atrix is still an Awesome phone and the Dev's here are working hard to make it better for all of us. I have seen all kinds of complaints and critisism here most of which are not at all constructive.
Personally I think there are numerus places and sites for this type critisism. The name of this site is xda-developers! It is where we all come if we have a problem or need assistance or simply want to learn about a device. I enjoy coming here and interacting with everyone and having an opportunity to learn. Education is a comodity that is cherished throughout the world! The hate and critisism distract and sway people from the task at hand with developing this new product. The Mods closed down the last thread that went in this direction (and rightfully so) and suspect the same will come of this.
Sorry to offend anyone and will probably get flamed royaly but it is just my two cents worth......

Yes, I get this once in a while. When pressing "settings" or any of the buttons in menu screen, the touch would not register until the 2nd or 3rd try. Very annoying.

Yes, we all put a gun to your head and made you read this. We also strapped your fingers to the mouse button for you to open these threads. These are feedbacks and I'm sure Moto is taking notes. Maybe other members here have solutions to some of the problem they're willing to share. You coming in here complaining about the complainers make you look like a little ***** also. lol. I bet the guy trolling about the nexus S is your best friend.

A hotrodded Captivate isn't nearly as slick as the Atrix. I have both and there is no comparison.

Well it's hard to believe that it's almost another year but here we are. Seems like yesterday I was working the wee hours of the night to put the fit and finishing touches on the wimax radio/making sure qik would play nice with wimax. Then the gold copying of 4G enabled hotspot during the eleventh hour before sending off to Sprint (Good Times). I felt it was time to chime in again and answer some of the pressing questions about EVO 3d. I would like to first congratulate everyone that has been so critical to EVO’s success in providing information/tips/tricks etc on the Android Forums EVO 4G threads. I know my company has been reading that thread like a religious book since EVO was referred to a Supersonic. Everything that was EVO and is EVO today is being put into what you the fans want in your EVO of tomorrow. Your knowledge and your talent inspired us to create the best EVO (We hope) ever.
Since I am a fan of the site, I want to share with you information that hasn't been released yet and information that I've been given the green light to release to the thread.
Start off by saying it is a "HTC EVO 3D and 4G" and not "LG" Yes gingerbread and something has not been mentioned Sense UI 2.0 Finally when your EVO is propped up on It's kickstand it will automatically go into landscape on all window screens.
The one thing that you guys talked about was full hdmi out. I admit we got robbed on that one. The price you pay for being first. I didn’t have anything to do with that one, but I would admit to be a bit impressed a phone was able to play a movie on a HDTV a year ago. “Orrebmas” your efforts did ping our radar. I am sure you will find nothing but fortunes on the android market with that fine software. Full HDMI will no longer be an issue. We ran it, tested it, on HDTV’s and 3DHDTV’s. Games, google, pictures, 3DPOV, and yes 3d movies all look awesome right out of the box.
Answer one of the more recent questions yes the new EVO will have a kickstand. I guess that was answered up above, but the new kickstand will be beefier and contoured to the back side of the case. The curved kickstand will allow the EVO to stand better at attention if you will. HTC logo will be on the back like the original EVO, but EVO 3D will be lithographed on the kickstand metal as well. Smart move cause with your protective cover on and the phone face down. Nobody could tell what phone it was. Now they will.
I know there was some flak on the recent GLBenchmarks and we caught hell for it around here as well. I just wanted to let you know that fit and finish on that has been polished out. Memory allocation was only single set data stream and we have now been able to utilize duel data stream with a bump in memory clock speeds. I guess you could use the analogy of SDRAM compared to DDRAM.
Scorpion chip set is very OC friendly; I can’t say what we were able to overclock the cpu’s to. Please no question on that one. I can say that we were able to almost double our GLbench scores with just the memory fix though.
The larger battery is the real. I can’t say what the final battery size is though. I can say from 8am to 6pm under stress test no need to plug in.
HTC EVO 3D does have two processors, which everyone here has seen on GLBenchmark site (Who Knew!) Important thing to mention is they take up less real estate then a single snapdragon processor die..Clue on power consumption.
I guess the last one that guys might like to know is that the front facing camera, is not 1.3mp. The one we have in house is 3mp. The back ones can’t be discussed right now, but they do have some cool tricks other than stereoscopic.
I always felt that it would be a cold day in you know what before I turn my EVO over specially after all the customization, ROMS, Tweaking, Benchmarking, and showing my 4.3in screen size to Apples boy like screen size. Update! All those tweaks, they will work on the new EVO with very little effort. Devs can rejoice.
Lastly, the battery form factor is interchangeable, but you are not going to need to though.
I’ll stop in from time to time. I have no clue on release date. I have to admit that one does make me laugh. I remember the original EVO release date was publicly announced and we still had gold work left. It was unlimited OT for almost a month straight. I have to say we did understand what the fans wanted and the time line they wanted it in, but it was/is a product we believed in. I think most can agree we crammed in a good amount fun factor considering it was a year ago. EVO still is one of the finest phones in the market, heck in the world for that matter. I know the same effort is going to be expected by all companies involved this time around too. Please keep putting up your wish list of items, doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, but doesn’t mean we can’t squeeze it in (Somehow) Enjoy the show.

[Q] Are you happy with your Atrix purchase?

Hi all,
Well it's been a good few months that you guys over in the States have had your hands on the Atrix.
The release is apparently 'imminent' here in the UK, so hopefully this thread and your feedback will help us decide whether it's worth pulling the trigger or not .
Whilst we are fortunate enough to be expecting either one or both of the HTC Sensation and the GSM EVO 3D by July, they are both 4.3" devices, and the Atrix - at the moment - still remains the only dual core device that we'll be getting here in the UK .
So, honest opinions, if you had your chance again now, would you go for the Atrix? Or hold out for something else?
Voting appreciated.
Pros/Cons would be ideal.

really loving mine. I have had two blackberries, 8330 and 9650 bold with os 6.0, all iPhone versions and numerous other stuff.
I love the Atrix for the 4" screen... the new 4.3" ers are too large for my hand.so 4" is the perfect screen size compromise in my opinion
the software is exteremely fast...
so yes, Im really loving mine to be honest.

However, talk of everything being locked down is disappointing. Having run a HTC Legend, I'm lucky that we've had some dev backing, which has enabled me to run CM7 and a few other ROMs. Without this kind of dev work/support, I'd still be on FroYo at best...
The Atrix really, really, seems to be lacking on the dev front - it seems to put so many people off, and more significantly, the developers

i agree ... more people need to be developing because as of right now im pretty pissed of with motoblur and how gay it is

I'm very pleased with mine. the best phone I have ever owned and I have been through them all. The bootloader is a bit of a bummer, but I know they will crack it it soon.

LOL. Sounds like more people "need to be" LEARNING to DEV, or waiting until there's more dev support before purchasing!

this phone is really nice with a quick response. much faster than that of the galaxy s. even the original rom is already good enough.
the high resolution is really nice to let you see more on the screen
but the poor thing is the screen lost touching after touching too long!

Fingers crossed eh? Just hope its not too late for the developers... else they may have moved on to newer devices [there's a lot of dual cores due to the market soon enough...]

Can you please elaborate a little on the bit in bold please?

I really like the Atrix and have owned one from its release date. Very fast and has many useful applications right out of the box. The virtual keyboard is much better than other Android phones I've owned, though I must admit that I do still prefer a physical keyboard. I have owned the G1 and Nexus One and like this phone much more than those.
There is only these "regrets". I wish the boot loader and software was easier to circumvent for custom rom installation. And I wish CyanogenMod had a ROM available for it. He does such great work.
I'm going to try to be patient and wait for the Motorola released version of Gingerbread, but I might try Gingerblur if it takes too much time to get an official release.
Very fast, great handset functionality, nice keyboard, great size, and the screen is beautiful. No regrets buying one with the exception noted above.

I do like the Atrix, but its Motorola thats the disappointment...
I mean, really Moto, how long does it take to get 2.3 out to the public, and its a darn dual core phone that cant use Live Wallpapers without massive lag....
As a result, I've got the Galaxy S II on pre-order waiting for delivery 5th May.

I love my Atrix. It's the first Android phone I've had. The iPhone 3GS was a perfect fit in my hand, and the Atrix feels exactly the same, albeit the buttons are in different places. I prefer my Atrix over the iPhone, and have found that even with it being locked down, the opportunities for customization are still way above the iPhone.
Is the Atrix fast?............Yes...............How does it compare to other Droid phones?..............I can't answer that one.

The screen is bad. PenTile matrix is more visible on Atrix than on Amoled PenTiles despite higher resolution. Small text is blurry with visible pixels. Blue/green colored icons etc has very visible pixels. Blacks are grey and the screen suffers from banding / not showing true color. Scrolling in menus with small text results in flickering and inability to read the text. Moving the phone, like giving it a short twist makes pixel-patterns temporarily occur in bright areas.
The power-button is among the worst buttons ever put on a mobile phone. It has no feel, almost no travel and is placed in a 45 degree angle which makes it even harder to press.
Pinch zoom in the browser and photo gallery is extremely(!) choppy, much worse than many single core phones.
The camera is not good with tons of noise. The front facing camera is almost a joke as it produces cartoon-like pictures.
Other annoying thing is that it isn't possible to turn of the vibration of the google-buttons.

I have no idea what the he'll you're talking about. Because the fact that the 3.5 mm jack is on the right hand side, they couldn't have put it there. The lock button is also a biometric sensor, which saves me alot of time. It's not awkwardly placed once you think about it. Because it's a 4'' phone, the form factor is rather large. Not having to stretch my finger joints out to the very top seems like a bit of an advantage, no?

And most if the lagging issues are w/ Motoblur. Get rid of it, and problem solved. The camera is a bit weak, but i'm not here to complain. I prefer a standalone camera anyway.
Overall, an exceptional phone that's a bit rough around the edges, but that'll sort itself out soon enough. Either from Moto, or third-party.

Hell, i'll take a second one. Never hurts to have a backup. If you want an awkward lock button, try the Galaxy S. That stupid thing is on the side. Whenever I use my friend's, I always end up locking the thing by accident or nearly ripping a hole in his USB port cover...
