Went back to 2.1, auto rotate doesnt work anymore... - Epic 4G General

So this same issue happened to me a few weeks ago. I thought something was wrong with my phone hardware wise. I then flashed to the latest midnight and boom auto rotate works beautifully, albeit i had to do the lag fix but it worked. Now Im returning to 2.1 to be ready for 2.2 official and bam its not working again. Anyone know whats going on? Im trying a different file of the di18 official to see if that does the trick but i doubt it...
Does anyone know what the build before di18 was? gonna try flashing to that and upgrading via ota...

for screen rotation fix do this: get android terminal from market. type"su" (without "") then type /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yahama and hit enter. follow the onscreen instructions.

I knew that. If you reread my post I said I ran the lag fix on midnight. I cant do it on 2.1 because I dont want to root. root= no ota... right?

oh sorry i didnjt see that. if you dont root then no there is no other fix.

Without root there is no known way to fix it. At least no posted way. A dev may be able to figure it out. Installing CyanogenMod fixes the problem without having to put in that code, so maybe noobnl or somebody else working on it knows how to fix it.

Has anyone even experienced this??? I find it really weird that auto rotate wont work for me on a stock rom but it did on a baked one. Is there a way to unroot and undo everything that one click root 2.5.5.0 does? If so i'll root and fix it then unroot.

Why don't you just root with z4root and then when finished you can unroot? If you need the apk for it I can post it. That would be easy to do and fix your problem. If you do decide to use z4 root then make sure you check permanent root and not temporary toot cause the superuser icon wont go away if you select temp. Root.

I also had the same issue. I had to flash back to 2.1 (DI18) because I wanted my phone fixed after i dropped it. You can take it to the sprint store. The service repair tech said he has never seen that happen to an epic before and order me a replacement phone! I started laughing after I hung the phone up. down side its a refurb phone

Yyeah that's true. If you ever wanted to.get a replacement phone just do this trick and take it in.

With my refurb phone. I rooted it then used odin to go back to stock and the rotation worked fine. When u was first rooted did u use ext 4 roms. That is the only difference between my last phone and this one.

Root your phone, perform the fix, then unroot your phone, and wait (patiently) for the OTA.

This is totally random, and I don't claim it to be a "fix" per se, but I have had this problem twice after flashing back to 2.1 from 2.2 and both times I was able to fix the issue by playing the included Asphalt 5 demo for a couple minutes (basically long enough to steer the car with the sensors for about a minute or less).

Is my Nexus defective?

OK, I got my Nexus S yesterday and it's been freezing on me multiple times each time requiring a battery pull. All I've done to it is unlock fastboot and root it using the superboot .bat file method. No custom kernels or anything else. I haven't even flashed clockwork recovery. The only other thing I did was use root explorer to put the hex edited flash apk on it so I can use it to watch hulu, but it's done this about 4-5 times today and twice in the last two hours. My bootloader is still unlocked right now, but I doubt that's the issue either. Anyone know of a solution or should I just brave the Christmas line tomorrow and exchange it for a different one?
Side note:
And I know the score means nothing but, every time I tried to run Quadrant it fails. Anyone know why that is?
Thanks
edit: post actually says what the problem is now.

None of this post makes sense. What's the problem? :|
There must be a sentence missing because I don't see a problem anywhere either
Oops I fight to post the problem. It's been freezing several times. At least 5 times today. I even got the ! screen on one of the freezes and I've had to do battery pulls each time.

Do a factory reset either through the privacy settings or through recovery. I don't know if you'll have to root again, but that should fix any software issue that preexisted root.
Sent from my Nexus One
was your phone doing this before you add the root or whatever extra stuff you added?
I think it froze maybe 1 time. I did the factory reset and I'm charging my battery right now. I didn't lose root which is good, but I don't know if it'll solve the problem. I guess I'll be able to tell if factory reseting it worked or not in a few hours.

Still freezing after the factory reset. Looks like I'll be making a trip to Best Buy this morning to get a new one.

sounds like a user error
What user error would that be?
Best Buy gave me the HARDEST time exchanging it. They kept asking me about whether or not I got the update and that it should fix my problem despite me telling them that even Samsung tech support said it wouldn't fix the issue and to get a new phone. Then they decided to test it out and it froze on the Google boot screen. Then all of s sudden they were OK with exchanging it.
Just hoping my second phone doesn't have the same issue.

Cant update after unrooting my phone

Wtf got bored and unrooted my phone and it says there is a htc software update ready to be installed and everytime i click it, it reboots my phone into the updater and then error. And i have to take out the battery to restart my phone.
Is this a problem with the phone itself or is there a way to fix this?
Did you unroot by running the RUU? Are you s-off? Do you have stock recovery?
I did all the above and i still get it to start updating then error

Sounds like you are still rooted but with no recovery... may want to flash the ruu again to make sure it all took... hopes this is helpful.
Also if you are referring to a firmware update I have a extra evo that says that but is currently on 3.30 still so I don't even know if 3.70 ever came out to unrooted phones..(I need to check into that)

I guess it didnot unroot completely but i started to redo the procedure and it kill all my drivers. Had to reinstall each one manually and the ruu is not finding my phone anymore after the first step of turning it off and using the usb cord. Help?
I think I found the problem, I needed to change the title for my phone on HTC sync to my HTC, and it found it ok. I also had to reset the splash screen to stock before any of this could happen.
Thank you for giving me the ruu and the pointers I needed to make this happen. Now to bring the phone back for other reasons on why its not receiving signal from Sprint but for some reason it gets Verizon... I can't stand Verizon so its time for a new EVO

[Q] z4root for htc evo shift

I just bought my htc evo shift...I was wondering if the z4root will work on this phone I have it downloaded n tried to install once but got scared and pulled the battery...can anyone tell me if this would be safe..I'm not trying to make my phone a paper wieght any info would be appreciated..
It works and is safe for temporary root only. Permanent root has not been established yet.

Happened to me the first time I tried it to. Try again and I bet it works like a charm!
shift refusing to factory reset
So I'm in need of some assistance I installed z4root n decided to unroot n just stick to my factory settings...so I uninstalled all root apps and z4root n then I tried to do a factory reset n it just refuses to do it...I tried the holding the volume button down then power on it justs gets stuck at the screen which says htc. What do I need to do?
z4root destroyed my phone :'( it lags to hell now. I tried to reapply it as was suggested, but it doesn't show up on my applications list. I can't even reinstall it... it takes a long time to try and install it and then it says "Application not installed."
If you have the Superuser APK showing up go into Settings, Applications, and uninstall it. Then pull the battery or power down and restart.
That's what helped me.
It took a while but Z4 showed back up on mine and I was able to uninstall it. I'm using +Visionary now myself and it has been great, just have to uninstall Superuser everytime I power off.
I tried to use Z4 version 1.1 (the link downloaded that one) and it didnt work. It begun to do the root process and then it froze. I reset my phone and uninstalled it. Then I found out about the newer version 1.3 and tried that one and has worked flawlessly the 2 times I had to use it.
visionary+
Worked great, correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that z4root has been blocked with the evo shift. So after I messed up my 1st phone n replaced it n rooted with visionary+ n I like it..I. havnt tried the permaroot because I don't think its been worked out yet but if anyone has permarooted the evoshift let me know....I want to overclock my phone...so ill be waiting
For those of you breaking your phones with Z4root, you should definitely Run the RUU from Sprint in order to "unroot" and not just try to delete the items you installed in order to root in the first place. Download the proper HTC drivers or HTC Sync, download the RUU that can be found on the Android Development page on the Evo Shift Forums here at XDA, and Run the Ruu straight from your computer while having your phone plugged in and USB Debugging on OR you can do it from Recovery mode OR you can do it from Fastboot. Either way, as soon as you run the RUU, everything will be done for you and you won't have to do a thing but sit back and watch! Hope this helps.
z4root
Z4root is great and I don't blame it for my stupidy I messed woth some stuff I knew nothing about...
I think I will wait for something permanent do I don't potentially mess up my phone after all the hours I put in to set it up.
Sent from my HTC Evo Shift using XDA app.
My "uptime" so far is 169:17:40 and counting since I rooted my phone with Z4Root. I can't wait for perma root...
What's your uptime so far...?
z4root works fine for me as long as I run it immediately after reboot. Otherwise, it can hang, or reboot the phone into a weird state, etc.
I'm using visionary+ now...I heard that the permaroot they use for the htc desire will work on the shift since they are basiclly the same phone...z4root takes up 24mb n visionary takes up like 2.8mb of space so I decided to stick with visionary+

Unroot EXT4 on Epic

I know when you install EXT4 it warns you that your phone will stay rooted forever, but I highly doubt that there's zero way to unroot it, you guys can do it. The situation is that my front facing camera is busted through a hardware problem and sprint is willing to give me a brand new one for free but it's rooted. And it's apparently rooted forever. lol Halp?

There's no such thing as rooted forever, unless you want it to be rooted forever. Not sure where you heard or read that. Just use Odin to flash back to stock di18, and you will be good to go.
You can odin back to stock there is a wiki page on out but I don't know the url off the top of my head.

Why don't you just Odin to DI18. You'll be back to stock. Not sure where you are getting your info. Odin is the stock image, wipes everything out. If I were taking it into the Sprint store I would probably format my sdcard too. Just save all your files I your computer.

Thanks for the fast replies. When you root and convert the file system to EXT4, it says you would also permanently install Clockwork mod 3.0.0.5 and root it forever. I'm gonna try to just flash the di18 pda. Thanks everyone!

I have a really stupid question

Ok guys I have a Samsung Epic running Gingerbread EL30, kernel version 2.6.35.7 Hardware version D700.0.5.
I have read and read and read both here and on SDX, and I'm still lost, also I'm as phone literate as a rock.
What I want to do is obtain root access to my phone without replacing or changing anything because I like the performance of eth phone, I just want to get rid of ads, and some of that good old Sprint and 3rd party bloatware thats killing me. is there a program out ere anywhere that simply gives me root access, without changing roms, kernels and stuff like that?
Download and install teamviewer and pm me the id and password and I can do this in a half an hour or so..depends

You don't need to install another kernel to keep root. You just have to remove the restore-recovery.sh file (I think that was the name). You would have to install Clockwork twice to do it.
1. Install CWM via Odin and reboot, pull battery once it shuts off and before it reboots, put battery back in and do 3 button boot into CWM recovery
2. Install su.zip and reboot. Once rebooted it will restore stock recovery but you will have root
3. Use some kind of file manager like ES Explorer and delete or move the restore-recovery.sh (I think that was the name)
4. Install CWM via Odin again and reboot. This time CWM Recovery will stick because that file has been removed which restores stock recovery.
I have done this on my phone and my friend's phone and CWM recovery does stick.
I was told the recovery.sh is not in EL30.

It did on my phone and my friend's phone when we did the OTA from EI22 to EL30. After doing the update, I lost root so I tried to go into CWM recovery to reflash su.zip and saw that it had reverted back to stock recovery. After I installed CWM twice and install su.zip, looked in the filesystem and saw the restore-recovery.sh file was back in it again so I assumed that the EL30 update put that file back in. It was a simple fix either way so I didn't really sweat that it had removed root and CWM recovery.

Since I already have EL30, I'm hoping I don't get any updates pushed to my phone, now that I have complete root access, I can install whatever I want
