Two aps I use frequently have mysteriously disappeared from the Android Market. Kitten Cannon and .podkast. No misspelling on .podkast (as in (dot)podkast). Can anyone confirm both of their removal? If not any clue why they are on my device?
They both (the one without the dot) show up on mine. From the Market Help:
Can't Find Applications
If you can't find an application, first try editing your search terms; the publisher may have changed the name in the application. If it still doesn't appear, it may not be available for your type of mobile device, in your location, or on your mobile service provider at this time. Developers have the ability to target applications to specific mobile devices based off screen size, mobile service provider, or location.
Additionally, if you have access to Android Market but can't download any paid applications, please ensure you are located in one of the countries listed on our Paid App Availability list.
From time to time, applications will become unavailable. Publishers might remove their applications from Android Market, or applications may also be removed for policy violations.
If you are looking for applications you have purchased or downloaded, open the Market application and select My Downloads. All of the applications that are currently installed or have been purchased through Android Market will be listed.
Some devices don't come with Android Market. If you don't have access to Android Market, please contact your mobile service provider or device manufacturer for more information.

According to Kaspersky Lab an Android app disguised as a “Movie Player” is in deed a SMS Trojan app designed to send text messages to premium rate numbers without the users knowledge nor consent, resulting in money passing from a user’s account to that of the cyber criminals. Lookout, makers of mobile security software, is already on the job of protecting users who have their Lookout Mobile Security application installed by releasing an over the air update to protect against the Trojan.
Currently there is no evidence the app was in Google’s Android Market however installed outside the Market. The user had to voluntarily accept application installs outside the Android Market by enabling and accepting the feature in the settings menu known as “Unknown sources”, which allows installation of non-Market applications. Furthermore the Trojan seems to only have affected Android smartphone users in Russia and only works on Russian networks.
According to Denis Maslennikov, Senior Malware Researcher at Kaspersky Lab, there’s not an exact number of infected devices available at present, but the outbreak is currently regional. For now, only Russian Android users can actually lose money after installing the Trojan, but anyone can be infected.

What to do if you think you’re affected? Here are some tips from Lookout:
How to tell if you’re affected
Review your phone bill for any premium SMS messages you did not send
If you have recently downloaded a media player, check the permissions to ensure it does not have the ability to send SMS messages. (Go to Settings, Applications, Manage Applications)
Be aware of the Android Apps you install
There has been a lot of news around mobile application security and data protection lately, one of the greatest takeaways in all this is the enlightenment of the consumer to be aware of the permissions requested when installing applications on Android phones. If an app requests a permission you are not comfortable with, either do not install it or contact the developer to inquire more.

I recently bought the Galaxy Tab 10.1, GT-P7510 with Android 3.1. When I opened for the first time the Market app I saw few applications and in the market web site some applications like Galaxy on Fire 2 THD displayed the following message:
"This item cannot be installed in your device's country" or Device not compatible message.
This message was very weird because Puerto Rico is a USA territory and I saw this application running in a demo in a same tablet in a local BestBuy. I was really pissed and contacting Google was useless. Google told me that the app isn't available at this time in Puerto Rico, what is a complete lie because this app can be downloaded in iPhones and iPads locally. They recommended me to contact the developer because they are responsible of maintaining the apps. Anyway, I rooted the tablet and downloaded Market Enabler but it didn't work either. But I managed to fix this issue doing the following steps:
1- Removed my Google Accounts from the tablet.
2- In Settings > Applications > Running Services select All
3- Cleared data and Force stopped all Market related services like Market, Market Feedback agent and Market updater.
4- I opened Google.com in my PC's browser and created a new Google account.
5- I selected the Country to United State and leave my Zip Code in blank.
6- Saved the changes.
7- I also logged to my old Google account that I was previously using with the market. I went to account Settings and in the dashboard section clicked in View data stored with this account and then I clicked in Edit personal information and changed Country to United State and remove my Zip Code in blank.
8- I connected my tablet by WiFi to my iPhone. To do this I had to root my tablet and using ADB I was able to do these steps discussed here to enable AdHoc connections in the tablet. The reason I did this is because using my iPhone 3G connection the IP location appears is inside the US and not in Puerto Rico.
9- Added the new Google Account to the tablet.
10- Opened the Market app and was able to see those missing apps.
11- Added the old Google Account and opened the market again. I was able to choose one of the two accounts.
12- Remove the new account created.
13- Disconnected the tablet from my iPhone to connect it to my wireless router as usual.
14- And... Yes!!! I downloaded Galaxy on Fire 2 THD, paid for some useless apps and no more compatibility issues.
I hope this help other persons living in Puerto Rico.

I bought it in a local BestBuy, $499.99
Thanks a lot! I'm gonna try this now on my Transformer. Been having a ton of issues with it's Market. I was just using my cel tether whenever I wanted to download and update apps and force closing market and clearing market data beforehand. But with GOF2 it is forgetting the in-app payment for the unlock if I so much as turn on the game connected to anything other than my cel tether. Only fix so far has been to uninstall the game, re-install and re-download. Luckily you can copy/paste the save files.
Hopefully this method will help, the Google Profile tip should do it.
Has the fix stuck? No matter what router you hook up to?
It works for a while. If i restart the tab or the market app and its connected to my home router the market will block the applications again. Basically i have to stop the market app, clear its data and connect it to my iPhone again to make it work. Basically the trick is connecting the tab using an ISP with an IP's location in the US and not in Puerto Rico. That's why using the iPhone's internet i can see all applications in the market. A VPN connection will also do the trick.
Well, I was verifying the Market and I think that Google made some changes. Months ago I was able to see all the applications in the Market's website using my laptop and for those apps that were not supported in my country it displayed the error message. Now I can't even see those applications in the website. All applications to be purchased are now gone. So, the Market's website is now blocking apps using the IP's location. Also if I connect my tab to the iPhone i can see all the apps but if I use my router with an local ISP all those apps disappears, no matter if I delete the Market's data or not.
This is the fix that Google was stating when I contacted them for support about this issue?

How does the Android community ban apps that ask for crazy permissions? For people who root and have some level of sophistication - we're not going to fall for bad behaving apps.
But for all those who don't even know what permissions are, they need to be warned.
Take a look at this one:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.antonio.fashion&feature=search_result
Comes from a banned company called Plankton that rebranded itself as StartApp.
I feel sorry for people that install this and can't get rid of all the nasty stuff they injected into their device.

I have a problem with an app that supposedly just displays pictures but needs access to my phone, my browser AND starts on boot. The network communication and SD modify I understand since it needs to retrieve the pictures from somewhere and save them in the memory other than the internal one but the rest of the permissions are just completely unnecessary.
Wow that's crazy, I fully agree!
Wow! Those permissions are crazy. That company should be banned. People are having a similar issue with the Amazon "Free app of the day" today. It's a game that is asking for a ton of permissions. There were a lot of complaints and the developer remarked on their Twitter account that they accidentally uploaded a version with "remnant permissions." Ya..right. Too many companies are getting away with this "we accidentally uploaded a test/alpha/beta/developer...etc version of our app." *rolls eyes

Hello,
I wanted to ask a question about the difference in permissions for an app that are shown on the Play store and in App Privacy area of the setting.
For example, when I downloaded Accuweather Platinum from Play store, I was told that the app will have access to Identity, Location, and Photos/Media/Files. For Identity, it further stated that it "uses one or more of: accounts on the device, profile data."
I found it rather intrusive that a weather app would want access to my identity information, be it anything. Especially, since their privacy policy dictates that they can track user behavior on ANY site the user visits and not just on AccuWeather site.
But when I go to Settings -> App Privacy -> AccuWeahter, I only see the permissions listed as "coarse location, fine location, vibrate, keep awake" and the check boxes are there to block either one or all of them (location, vibrate, keep awake.)
Can someone please help me understand how this works. Why did Google Play mention that app will have access to my identity information and if the app really has that access, why won't App Privacy allow me to restrict that access.
Thanks
I've been trying to find out how the new google play permissions work too. I don't know what permissions have changed any more because it only lists all permissions and doesn't makr the new ones, so you have to go back to the Application settings and look at what they currently use and then, like you say, work out how they line up. I think google has succeeded in gettting people to not care anymore about permissions. Why take away the visibility and control of it all? Anyway, hope I can find something that can help. In the meantime, I just won't update apps with changed permissions.
I do have an app that now says "uses one or more of: accounts on the device, profile data." and their response was "We made changes that were required by play services and advertising network". I find that a bit hard to believe.
Edit: Having said that I just came across this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/playpermissionsexposed-fix-play-store-t2783076. You'll need to be rooted and have xposed framework installed though.
