Apps open by themselves

Hey all,
I've had my (Sprint) Hero for a couple weeks now and enjoying being able to mess around with different roms and tweaks but I've noticed something annoying. I've been using task killers more heavily in the past week or two now and it appears that apps will sometimes open up by themselves.
I had originally not noticed it because I've been playing with the phone so much I generally had the apps open a lot from messing around and showing people different things. Lately I've got into the habit of killing tasks. I'll go to pick up my phone and notice my RAM usage is rather high and I find apps running that I haven't opened.
Most commonly I see:
Google Shopper
Sprint Navigation (Decided to just delete it)
Market
Clock (the alarm app appears when I switch to it)
Weather
com.google.vrec (can't remember name... also deleted)
So ... I was wondering if anyone could tell me why these would be opening by themselves.
Thanks

Hey Poorboy,
That's just INSANELY helpful! I'm SO glad you're around ... if it weren't for you, he would never have figured that out.
bhhandley,
I've noticed it as well, seems to be frequently used apps or apps with registered services. I just kill them.
I guess that's not the best solution

Poorboy you do make me laff!
regarding the apps, i might be wrong but are the apps opening on your home screen?? I noticed that if i closed all apps with a task manager app then when i scrolled through the home screen the apps i have on there seem to take up mem again, (like a weather app attached to the clock) aswell as other apps that are designed to be running all the time like wallswitcher, things like foot prints seems to be running if i have used the camra...
maybe im wrong.. but this is what i noticed.
get autostarts from market, it will show you on what event which app will be started. also gives the power to disable automatic app starts.

+1 Very cool app. Thank you for recommending it.
Found a bunch of the apps wanting to start after a connectivity change. I believe that wifi and mobile network connections turn themselves off after being inactive for awhile and start up again after the phone is brought out of sleep or at least do it periodically which explains what's going on.
Apps are always opening by themselves, often I don't even look at the task manager I'll just use one of the "kill all apps" widgets and it'll tell me that it killed 3 or 4 apps, none of which were apps I opened myself.

this is the general hero forum. there is a cdma subforum for cdma related stuff, however general talk about apps or problems with general apps matches the "hero general" section very well from my point of view.

[Q] Vanilla Android and Facebook??

Hi Guys
Long time reader of these forums and have used the guides provided here numerous times. This is my first time post and it's a bit of a noob question but after looking around the forums, I haven't been able to provide a concrete answer.
I remember reading about Facebook integration with Android 2.0+ but could someone clarify how vanilla android interacts with Facebook? I am a huge fan of HTC Sense being able to pull down my friends info into my contacts. Also is there a way by which I can back up all my apps and contacts so that when I've flashed a new ROM I can just restore the data?
Again I apologise for the basic questions, but I couldn't seem to find any solid answer through my searches and I'm itching to put 2.2 on my legend.
Much appreciated
Linking Facebook and Google-Contacts works in 2.* as far as the names are the same. Ihaven't found a function like in sense where you can directly point to a specific FB-contact and link it to a google or phone-contact as you want. Regarding your second question, your contacts will be saved @google if you use a googleaccount, for backing up your settings and programs go with TitaniumBackup but your handset has to be rooted for this.
Thanks ^_^ I realised what I'd asked about the contacts only after I'd posted it >.< but all the same thanks for the info
Just btw, which fb app are you using (this goes to everyone) ?
Not a single one I tried so far was good enough.
I have the official fb for android but it doesn't display message whole threads when they are too long and when i click on a notification, it opens up in the browser.
Then i tried fb browser, but that one can't open youtube vids. It tries to open them itself instead of opening them in the yt app, but I'm unable to click on the play button.
the rest is either a copy of these 2, or comletely useless.
Sent from my Legend
I just stick with the default android one...the lesser of the evils out there. But I agree with you in that the apps aren't as good as they could be. Who knows, maybe Facebook will announce some android related news at their mobile event today
I'm using the official one. There is an update, just installed it today. There is now finaly places and when clicking in the notification, no more webbrowser with touch.facebook.com is opened.

[SOLVED] Looking for Android launcher app that can sort apps/games

Hi guys, I know some launchers have the ability to sort apps/games into groups like ADW Launcher EX.
I was just wondering if there is a launcher/app that will pop up upon installation of a new app/game and ask what group you want to place it in?
I really like ADW but its just a ball-ache trying to keep track of things I install and make sure I haven't forgot to sort something, it would be cool if something asked after installation.
Has anybody come across a launcher/app that can do this?
[EDIT] This so probably best to go into questions/general thread. Can a mod move please.
Try "Smart Shortcuts" om Marked.
I think folder organiser pops up in notifications when a new app is installed.

Thanks guys but found exactly what I was looking for.. "Auto App Organizer"
Its awesome, been looking for a app like this since first getting Android. It will automatically scan all your installed apps and categorize them and will also watch for new installed. You can then create shortcuts to the categories on home and they will act like folders.
The app is free but I paid for the full version (no banner). tbh the banner wasnt really annoying or anything, I simply wanted to show appreciation.
I would REALLY recommend this app to anybody.
Thanks man. I have played with folder organising apps and the such before, but I just never bothered putting new apps into relevant places and so it just became a bit pointless.
This sounds much more suited to me! I shall have play.
Cheers
Edit: Lol - looks like the dev and me have a source in common

[Q] `com.android.htcprofile` and `recovery` in Titanium Backup

At the bottom of my Titanium Backup application list I see two entries: `com.android.htcprofile` and `recovery`. Both are crossed out, as if they stand for uninstalled applications. They are not backed up, so there's no reason for them to appear in the list. Refreshing the list does not make these entries to go away.
What are these entries? What is the importance of having them in the list? Why does Titanium Backup display these entries in the list, even though Titanium Backup itself seems to understand that they are "uninstalled" and not backed up?
BUMP
I was wondering the same thing, I don't see Recovery anywhere in my list but I do see com.android.htcprofile
I'm having problems with my widgets disappearing on the stock Rom. Only on the stock homescreen not ADW. Was thinking this could be the cause possibly?

If it was i am thinking it is.
HTC profile is a stock application much like blackberry has different applications. Same basic idea. When you are are home, and you have the "home profile" active it will not pull your work emails. If you are at work it pulls everything but lowers the volume not to disturb people around you.
and i do not have "recovery" on mine so i do not know what it does.
google doesn't even know the answer to your question, therefore, it must not have an answer.

Well, what I'd like to know is not what "HTC profile" does. The main question here is really about Titanium Backup: what exactly does that mean when Titanium Backup shows in its list an application that is crossed-out?
Normally, Titanium Backup shows a crossed-out application when you uninstall something. An uninstalled app is shown crossed-out until you refresh the list. After refresh it disappears. Sometimes, an uninstalled application might remain in the list if you previously backed it up. So, a persistent crossed-out entry normally means "it is uninstalled, but you still have a backup for it".
In my case I see `com.android.htcprofile` and `recovery` crossed-out in the list, but I have no backup for these applications. So, the question is why Titanium Backup keeps showing them in the list? What is Titanium Backup trying to tell me by keeping these crossed-out entries in its list?
Same here. DAMN, and I just did a system wipe, thinking I unistalled something by mistaki
I ended up at this thread when I Googled after encountering the same thing. I came across it because I was trying to free up some space. It is associated with a 4 MB+ text file which Titanium can't delete. I think the text file is the reason it's showing up.

[Q] trojan?

My A500 seems to be infected with something. Every google search done from the default search on the tablet goes to some creepy website supposedly about jokes. I'm hoping someone here can help me fix it. I have anti virus running but it didn't catch this.
I'm not tech savvy, and my tablet is not rooted. Thx for any help!
Do you have a windows based tablet?

It's not a virus. You probably installed an app that changed the settings for your search.
Open your search, then select the "settings" in the upper right corner. You can adjust your defaults search settings from there. Also might just see the app that changed it as well
Sorry. I thought the "A" in A500 indicated an Android tablet. It is Android, not Windows.
Funny...the concept of buying a Windows tablet is so unthinkable to me that it never occurred to me to consider that someone would think it was other than Android. LOL
THANK YOU Moscow Desire! That's exactly what it was. Now to find the offending app....grrrrrr. I didn't see anything in the settings to clue me in to what app did this nefarious act. I will find out though...and post a "review" on the Market.
Thanks again!

Great!
Another thing you might try if you see some strange apps suddenly appear, or you get strange notifications, is go to the Market and install an "air push detector" app. Not neccessary to run it all the time, but on occassion.
Thanks for the tip! I will do that now. Still haven't found the offending app. Nasty little buggers.

Avast did not catch it. I use Avast on my desktop and my tablet. In any case, the problem is gone now that I fixed the search settings. Thanks!
Use AirPush Detector from market. It's free, light and looks for apps that for example put ads on your lower bar (the one with clock, wifi icon etc).

Yep...have done that. Thanks!
My Comment is late in this thread.. And im sure you have it resolved..
But here is what i do to catch crap..
go to the market get advanced task manager app. Its tiny app and can be turned off to not Run in the background.. Once you do that it will not take up cpu or memory .
once in a while start it up and look at the apps that are running in the background. In the apps settings you can tell it to auto kill certain apps. This feature can be good to trouble shoot and find apps that have evil programming attached to it.
I will add be careful what you kill with it. If you open a app like the above and keep killing or set apps that you DO USE to be killed you will be fighting the built in management in android. IF Apps are in there that you know your running. If those apps you are sure is not the issue . DO NOT KILL Them they are just setting static for the most part. Killing them will cause cpu spikes as they will just come right back . Use the above mentioned app ONLY AS A TOOL To find rogue apps. not as memory manager app. Android does a great job with doing that if the apps will play by the rules..
Just wanted to add this to the other GREAT Replies you received in this thread. I believe most of the others who have applied use this or a similar app to week at ROGUE APPS.
Good Luck..
Thanks erica_renee...I'll take a look at it. If it's too complicated though, I probably won't be able to figure out how to use it. LOL Many of these apps have no instructions. The devs assume we all know how to figure them out. Not so true. I see "reviews" all the time from people asking how to use these things.
