Look in my sig to a link for the OTA Cupcake build. You can apply this directly to RC29 to upgrade to CRB43.
As for rooting... I posted a couple of links for you in another thread, IIRC. Just look over those threads...I know exactly what you're thinking. Before the G1, I had an Excalibur and I could flash that thing blindfolded. Not to mention editing the registry and all the other hacks... I was used to it.
It took me about 1 week to understand enough about the G1 to be ready to root it. Obviously, not rushing into anything is a good idea considering you can totally screw your phone up if you do something blatantly wrong. But you'll realize that bricking your phone is actually fairly difficult once you realize what it takes to do so.
Anyway, once you read through the directions and follow them to a T, you'll quickly understand the process and can be more confident. Follow the link below... I found it to be the best guide to Rooting, hands down. However, to make it even easier, download the Cyanogen Recovery, Radio, Haykuro SPL (if you have the PVT board, which you probably do...otherwise just the HardSPL), and new ROM separately and just copy them onto your SD card before you start the process. That way all you'll really do from the guide is run one option from the Root app, which is "Protect your root". Then you can just flash those individual files yourself and be done with it in a matter of 10 minutes.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533731
Once you've read the link and other information, and gathered the three files I mentioned, post any questions here and we'll help you get rooted. I promise you won't regret it.
Hey man I feel you on that. I was nervous to root my G1 because I cam from WM and it was like bing bang boom and your done. I waited about a week or so to finally do it but once its done you wont regret it. And if you are REALLY scared to do it this way you can try the 1 click root, just find the guide for it on here.
I jumped right in with no doubt coming from a wm phone, figured I took the chance and put linux on my computer and never looked back, so I was thrilled to have it on my phone<whole reason of getting the g1> I wanted to see what this bad boy could do right away

Yes... all you have to do to downgrade to RC29 is have dreamimg.nbh on the root of your SD card, enter bootloader and flash it.
Also, yes after installing the file I linked you to, you will receive subsequent updates over the air.
Edit: You need to shrink the font on your sig... it's huge!

use the 1 click method, it is cake, it will take like 30 min, and the reason it takes so long is because you are waiting for it to load, I have done 2 of my friends this way. I rooted mine the old fashion long way, but i am glad i did because now i know more about it.
Hello I just received a un-rooted mytouch but it is stuck on 1.5 even though the previous user has been using it on the network for the past few months. Is there somewhere I can download the latest official 1.6 update to flash onto this device?
just one click root it and flash a donut rom. It will only take like 15 minutes, and with everything else that you will be able to do with it, it would definitely be worth it.
Manually install 1.6 update on mytouch:

I tried these instructions but get an error when attempting to flash. Also the ROM he has linked is only 20mb?
is that link the REAL official t-Mobile Donut 1.6 update?? I dont understand why there are not numerous links and sources to the update, I need the real update cause i am test driving the phone, I wanna root it and try it thaqt way, but eventually in a few days im gonna have to give it back to my buddy, he already was buggin about my rooting it, i mean i guess if decide to buy it thats one thing, but i would like to bring it back to Official 1.6 status if not
Its weird usually when anykind of firmware or operating system is releaseed everyone has tons of dwnload links and various sources to get it, but i mean its weird i can only find that one link thats posted above?? I see there is a stock build here in XDA, but says a few tweaks but generally stock, im curious if I need to have the phone rooted to even install that ROM?? this ROM here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=549755
go to the t-mobile forums there is a guide for this, here is a link DIRECTLY TO THE GUIDE FOR MANUALLY UPDATING TO 1.6

Forums are full of rumors of an imminent OTA to froyo/2.2. Sometime soon. Assuming this to be the case....
What's a good strategy to prepare my N1 so that I will be in a good position to install any update, with minimal fuss?
I have am not rooted, running stock 2.1 and have 80 apps installed. I have gone to Appbrain and made a new list called "My pre 2.2 apps" and copied everything I have currently installed into there. So I can always refer back to it.
I am thinking:
1)back up Contacts, SMS's, Call logs. (Already done.)
2)Jot down a list of my few must have apps for install post update.
3)Remove the rest which are just "nice to have apps" which I rarely use, to tidy things up a bit.
Then let her rip, if and when it materialises.
Interested to hear what others have in mind.
I would assume that OTA'ing to Froyo would leave my installed apps as-is. Is that a silly assumption?

I would think the same, and if not google automatically backs them up on their servers so that when you restart your phone it reinstalls everything back on the phone..

No, your phone should not become appreciably hotter during the OTA install.

Step 1: Twiddle your thumbs.
Step 2: Click "Update".
That's it. The OTA won't wipe your apps. The OTA doesn't need you to make space for it. There is no need to "clean up" your phone by uninstalling apps.
HOT - I am just having warm flushes thinking about it woops..
Sweet - no apps wiped. All good. I can rely on everything to be there - 100% afterwards. No need to backup or do anything then. Will back up to be sure to be sure. And will do a bit of spring cleaning in any case.
Thanks..
I think it's safe to say some of us are in the nesting phase: preparing for our Nexus Ones to give birth to 2.2
If app2sd is really implemented in Froyo, I hope there is an easy way of transferring apps from phone memory to sd card. I don't want to be uninstalling apps and reinstalling them to the sd card. =_=
True, if apps2sd is implemented i don't want my current apps to be installed. I want everything on the sd card.
If apps2sd card is implemented i bet they will go with the complete wipe solution just to make sure there are no bugs.
I can't remember if 1.5 to 1.6 required a wipe, however, I would rather have a wipe and an "upgrade". Remember all the issues with "Upgrading" OS's with major changes?
I am Stock as well, so I have backed up my Contacts to SD, Backed up all my App APK's to SD (thanks to Astro) and all my Call Logs, SMS and other data that is not backed up via Google is backed up using MiQ. So I am ready to go as soon as they pull the trigger.
I was going to say you people are preparing too early, but since I can't exactly identify the exact release date after so much speculation of it coming out at the Google I/O - or, June as I believe Flash was said to be released officially. Google is supposedly trying to incorporate Flash into Froyo, so without Flash, I assume there would be no Froyo.
Though, they could release Froyo with Flash beta..
So if we have are device rooted and we want to try to get the OTA Android 2.2 update, we won't?
Any idea on what we could do to "unroot" and get the update? or should we just wait for Cyanogen's version to be released...
[Hot to] prepare for OTA?
1. Buy a six pack, and a pack of smokes.
2. Find a comfy chair.
3. Click "Update".
4. Drink beer, and smoke smokes.
5. Play with Froyo 2.2.
6. Wait for Cyanogen's modded Froyo.

Flash back to stock rom and recovery image.
Prepare for all your apps to break until your app developers update thme. =D
p.s. Flash will NOT be integrated into android os. So froyo isn't dependent on the state of flash.
I will prepare by eating a large meal the night before so large that I will be sitting on the toilet when the update notification comes in. I will time it so that my dump climax happens right when I push update.
Although i want Froyo to be released as soon as possible. I dont think it will be this Wednesday. So far its all just speculation.

All of the apps I've downloaded so far have worked normally. I don't think it's THAT big of a leap. It's nowhere near Donut->Éclair.
I went through so many methods of trying to get my HTC Hero to root but cannot period.. i tried the goldcard method, instant root, fastboot, and cant even downgrade. Is there something im missing because i swear i tried everything.. I have the newest htc hero 2.1 on sprint...
Isnt that because you updated to the official spring 2.1? People have been saying not to update to the official since it might make your phone unrootable. Shuda waited for a custom 2.1

you can try the guide in my sig, let me know if it works
So froyo is leaked and installed and all is fun (seems to run a bit slower than 2.1 to me, especially during start up) but I have the problem of A TON of bloatware.
Anybody played around yet? I've frozen a few of them but unsure of what all is good and bad.
How about root? The newest version Z4Root does not work, it stalls and you have to force close it.
got a link to the 2.2 download?

this is the beta version that was leaked out. Go thru all the steps to get the free download, the waiting and blah blah blah.

Hi!
Well, I made some post with the info that good people make available and that I collect to try to make it easy,in this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211799
I already made the update since 2 days ago and very happy, in my case I found very usefull that at leats by now some usefull 2.2 tricks are very welcome like move some apps to sdcard and few other, but as new detail in my case the 2.2 update is detecting one of my 2 batteries as non original moto, and refuse to charge it, but in 2.1 it works perfect and could be charged...
So, for me is stable and hope that could be better the final release (if it may really happen, since Moto put down the page about the release.... :-/ so could be lucky that at least we have this beta, for possible future roms)
Best regards!
Froyo runs faster and it has a great file explorer built in. The only thing that sucks is that there is even more bloatware from AT&T
I have the phone unlocked and in Canada so my unlock stayed and unknown sources is still available after the upgrade
hope there are some edits soon they get rid of all the bloatware, there are legitimately 12 bloatware apps from AT&T on the phone now.
The interface is a little bit sleeker and the boot up of the phone is now silent, which i love since the old boot up was a bit to loud.
xaser, your guide is what I followed to do mine and I really apprecite your time to put it up. Worked great.
Somebody said the full update is up on moto, anybody got a link? I couldn't find anything.
No I have not tried an older version.
Anybody had any luck with a root on the beta? Or the full version either one?
Are we sure this "beta" isn't the full version? The Android Version in About Phone just says 2.2.2 instead of 2.2.2b like i'd expect with a beta.

Use caution... I flashed back to 2.1 once by simply following the guide in the development forum again. But tried to do it again this morning and my phone bricked. So I had 50% success which is too little for me to suggest it.

Why Motorola make the phone so un-opensource!!!
I know the only issue I had with reverting my Flipside was the RSD software, 4.9 wouldn't detect my phone but 4.5 worked perfectly fine

I didn't need to reflash, I used RSD to downgrade. Since I had my phone rooted. then I just ran the official upgrade and it's been running like butter for me, real smooth.
I've searched all over for info on rooting froyo on the Flipside and it looks like it's going to take awhile because they locked the phone down tight and the few guys that have rooted the phone have started experiencing problems with the phone because of the root.
