is maintenance upgrade necessary? - Fascinate General

I am running DL30, just got the notice of the update for the puzzle lock issue, do I need to install this?
thanks

There is no MR for froyo. I believe that the message you are talking about is an update for those running DL09 or DI01. In which you could not make emergency calls when the phone was locked.

You shouldn't be able to use the vzw OTA client while running the DL30 leak. You would have to revert to an earlier stock ROM in order to download this update from verizon.
I'm unsure whether DL30 has the 911 issue this update is meant to correct but personally I don't think it's worth the trouble. If there is a problem I'm sure someone will post a more convenient fix soon.

Thanks for the answers. I think I will just let it ride. I got the notice of the update, but I did not try it.
Thanks

Try the update, it wont hurt anything.

Holy Hell this update is fast

Well, I had to jump through some hoops to upgrade, but I finally got the 2.2 OTA and it is FAST.
It's even faster than the leaked version I previously had on there.
The hoops:
I was on a rooted 2.2 leak so I had to flash back to 2.1, only the Windows flash utility failed at 97%.
Then I reset, cleared the cache and re-flashed (but this time in Linux) and it worked fine.
I booted into stock 2.1, re-activated my phone and then looked for the OTA.
It was there so I downloaded and installed.
I just finished reinstalling my apps and everything's good to go.

overall speed-wise? i'm thinking to update mine. I'm on 2.1 stock with root. I'd be bummed to lose root since real HDMI is a godsend. do i have to unroot first?
i wouldnt upgrade if youre rooted. i tried and got stuck at the m logo and bootloader is changed so you wont be able to flash back the 2.1 so id either make sure you dont have any rooted apps and youre unrooted or stay with 2.1
Gotta say, with 2.2+LauncherPro I don't even miss root or custom ROM's.

Same here, this is my setup too and it's awesome.
If you're rooted or on a 2.2 leak, I would definitely go through the processes of reverting to stock 2.1u1 (via SBF - http://rootzwiki.com/index.php/Smartphones/Motorola/Droid-X/Droid-X.html) before attempting the OTA update.
I hoped to see the OTA this morning but it wasn't there. So I checked for updates & there it was. It loaded fast & with no issues. I had factory 2.1 without root. I love it so far.

That's partly due to you clearing off your phone. I sbf'd back to 2.1u1 last night and reapplied the leaked 2.2, root, 2.3.15, tranquility, then serenity, and HOLY SMOKES this is faster than it was before I did this. Like, WICKED fast! And yeah, that's without the bloatware-filled OTA. Got the same system as you do too: 2.3.15, just leaked and deodexed
Except your missing the new radio and kernal Also im running the legit 2.2OTA, and have rooted it via the droid2 method..now just have to manually deodex it and ill be all set

Just a heads up, I was running full stock 2.1, however I was rooted, and I did the OTA update with 0 problems. I lost root, but used the Droid 2.2 method and got it back. No issues whatsoever.

Problems with update
has anyone had any issues after update? A friend of mine has the Droid X, he was running original ROM not rooted, and he did the OTA update and is complaining that his phone is running slow and crashes periodically.

All im saying, is why bother with incomplete leaks? Why not take the little effort and do the real OTA?? I SBF'd back to 2.1.. Then did the OTA 2.2 Update, and then did the automatic 1 click Droid2 Root method.. and had a rooted, legitimate 2.2 update in less then 30 minutes after the initial SBF back down
What your doing is like buying a car with no doors on it.. Why run just the leaked system folder, when you can just get the total package that comes with an updated Radio and Kernal along with it? Why have an incomplete update with some components missing, when its not even that big of a deal to get the actual, 2.2 total package and have it rooted in 5 minutes anyway

I think you over-estimate the value of the kernel (which is actually the same version - just a different build-string) and the radio (which is a very small incremental bump in version).
The downsides to the upgrade (for hackers/themers) is that there is no sbf for 2.2 right now and it's been reported that once you OTA, you can not flash back to 2.1 via sbf or you'll brick.
If you're a 'stock' kinda guy, then OTA is probably the way to go. Those that like tinkering a little deeper, need the safety net of an SBF.
I agree. I personally think it would not be smart to OTA at this time if you have the desire to run anything other than stock on your phone (whether you can get root or not). I hear the new OTA doesn't run wireless tether for root users (not sure about this).
I'm still running the original 2.2 leak rooted. After all the problems I've been hearing about with tranquility, I would like to wait until I hear less complaints. Although from what I've read, most of the problems come from user error and people not following the instructions so I'm definitely not knocking P3Droid or Team Black Hat.
We have a system sbf file now for 2.2, that's all youll ever need unless you try something crazy, I have the OTA, rooted and also manually deodexed it myself and running my old theme I liked before.. Adfree is also working fine on my OTA unlike some others... What im saying is im not missing anything over the leak, If anything I have more. The 2.3.15 deodexed leak gives me nothing I don't already have because I was able to deodex and root the official myself.

Very strange, I haven't had a single problem with anything, and I've used everything you listed...,im even pulling 1490 in quadrants
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
And I was pulling similar quadrant scores from the leaks which have the SAME STUFF as the OTA. All they did was increase the version number for the radios and kernel. Even the sbf TBH released isn't the full complete sbf I'd like to have for a safety net (though I trust them when they do say that it is good for everything except folks trying to get out of brick b/c they sbf'd to 2.1u1).
Besides, getting to OTA may be quick, but getting back to where my phone is NOW but with the OTA kernel would take HOURS. No thanks. Not till it is optimized and deodexed and cleaned up by TBH.
Running the OTA, and wile everything works, I'm not seeking an overall speed increase. Some individual things are definitely faster: the browser, gmail, lock screen. But, others are the same, and some, occasionally laggy (may be that's due to my apps? ADWlauncher?).
It's not that the system is slow, just that I don't see any overall boost (certainly not the JIT impact written about in the Froyo coverage).
Compared to 2.1, those things are much snappier. Also, clearing the cache helps with this too.

[Q] I rooted and installed a ROM, what to do if 2.2 or 2.3 comes out?

rooted, installed cw recovery, installed jt's superclean 0.4 DI01 ROM, what would I do when 2.2 or 2.3 comes out? will I have to wait a couple days for a updated ROM to come out for that version of android? Or would I have to go back to stock?
Wait for a ROM... Much easier than dealing with having to go back to stock just for an ota

this. and you know very shortly after an OTA comes out, or more likely before, it will be released here in multiple flavors. so i wouldn't worry about it.
ok cool. thanks
Thanks for the info....good post. I hope its true and we see it soon. Ignore PhoenixPath he likes to shoot down anyone.... Your thread 100% belongs here.
Would it be expected to have a Froyo 2.2 rom the same day it comes out OTA if Verizon somehow keeps it from being leaked before?

I would think there would at least be a rooted version out the same day. A lot of it will depend on when it is released. If it gets released late at night or during the week, it may take a little longer than if it gets released earlier in the day or on like a Friday.
Another reason not to return to stock to get an update from Verizon: The update may prevent the phone from being rooted again by patching the security loophole that we exploit to gain root.

[Q] Is there an easy way to backup your entire unrooted phone for these updates?

I have my Fascinate and will be installing the DL09 update soon. I read it completely wipes your data.
I have not rooted and do have Astro File manager installed.
I noticed Astro does have a backup option, but read somewhere that while it does backup your apps, they are not recognized by the market app when reinstalled. So no updates.
Is there a way to update as much of everything (settings, apps, etc) where it will come back as it was and work fully as intended on an unrooted 2.1 phone?
I'm fairly sure that only applies if you flash the leak provided by Adryn. If you're getting the OTA from verizon you should be fine.

I highly doubt any carrier would release an OTA update that wipes the phone. Can you imagine how many pissed off people there would be?

I was pissed actually. I was thinking of how crappy either vzw or Android was that it updated without keeping user info intact.
But, it sounds like I was just confused based on what I read in the dev forum about the DL09 mdf file.
So, now I wonder why anyone would do it that way? Why not just be patient and wait for it to roll out to you? Seems like less hassle.
What is this "patience" you speak of..?

Adryn's version doesn't have the vzw bloatware. And if you're already rooted and running a custom ROM you would have to flash back to stock (losing your data) in order to receive the OTA anyways.
If I'm mistaken someone please correct me.

[Q] Froyo for Fascinate? I already have!

Ok so alot of annoying thread about the release of Froyo for Fascinate owners....beyond that wether its true or not, what if i've already flashed my phone with the DL30 rom and my phone is already in Froyo?
Will this move (if it even occurs) mess up my existing Rom?
Will i have to re-root?
Will it Wipe the already B-e-a-u-tiful setup i have??
OMG why not wait for a rom to appear that same day and flash it?
good day.
DL30 is an unofficial release of Froyo for the fascinate, by flashing it you have Froyo, if you wish to flash a new rom you will lose your "b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l" setup as you have to wipe
OMG Sorry chopper that some aren't on your "level" of Modding knowledge, next time help to the question not try to insult....
Good Day
Im refering to the OTA Verizon pushes to our phone Captain, when EA28 hit me i had no knowledge until i got a text from them saying they did....hence why i asked, would this type of OTA push affect all my questions as above?
If you're on something other than stock, you won't get the OTA.

ya know i thought the exact same thing, but i flashed my phone with DL09 and re-rooted it, set all my Titanium Backups....backup, 3 days later somehow, i had EA28 and lost root??????
DL09 was an official release. Rooting your device isn't enough to prevent the upgrade (disabling the service that checks for updates is the simplest way to do it).

Errors on System Updates

Before anyone says it, please know I have been reading through many threads that mention this problem, but I am wondering if people are still having this problem now that they are pushing updates.
When I go to system updates and attempt to check firmware, update profile, or update prl...all I get is the Unknown Error in return.
I was once rooted and returned back to DI18 in hopes of getting the pushed OTA this week. Is anyone still having this problem? I am simply trying to make sure that my flash is not causing this problem. I used Odin and the link from the XDA forums to go back to stock. I am not rooted.
Thank you guys in advance for your reply and all of your help.
I have never had anything but stock everything and I'm getting the Unknown Error most of the time for all of them with the occasional No Update Available message sprinkled in.
I have EB13 which I received OTA before they pulled it fwiw.
I also have had nothing but stock and am seeing the same thing. Still waiting on ota.

Thanks guys. I just was making sure I wasnt the only one here having that issue. It sounded like everyone now is on Ec05 and i wanted to make sure I wasnt handicapped in some way.
Anything related to provisioning or Sprint Profile information related to the Epic and a few other Sprint phones will not connect. PRL 60777 cane out and all other Sprint devices can update to it, but they messed something up on the towers when they tried to put EC05 on it.
The way it looks currently is that the OTA is for DI18.... You can odin back to DI18 and wait for the OTA if you want cause that maybe the only way to get it if you are unwilling to flash a ROM from here. Hopefully sprint won't leave the EB13'ers out in the cold....

Do you mean ever or just this second? I thought it was just hitting DI18 users first and the small proportion of us who got EB13 OTA will be getting it last, either today or tomorrow.
Unless I'm outdated, the release said EB13 was getting it as well... but of course take what you will from a Sprint announcement.
I've never rooted or flashed or done anything like that... I just can't imagine they'd punish me for receiving the EB13 OTA quicker than a lot of other people.
Im on Eb13 and got a text from sprint last night letting me know it was coming. Anyone else from eb13 got the ota yet?
