i purchased galaxy tab here in karachi, pakistan.
when i connect it to pc via kies, kies says to upgrade from jj3 to jj7. i proceed, but after the upgrade is downloaded it says the same thing over and over again "failed to convert to upgrade mode....please try later" (i tried it around 30 times!)
and my tab remains frozen with andriod green logo holding shovel and says "downloading upgrade....do not turn off the source!"
i than had to long press the power button to turn it off and then turn it on again and it run fine with still the same jj3 version.
please suggest me how to bypass this upgrade problem?
thanks in advance.
i sorted out the problem...the source upgrade file was corrupted, i changed the source destination and it went fine then.

what the hell is Samsung doing? I did not update last time with broken firmware and I tried this time with kies.
Now the problem came again.. It only appears Downloading... Do not turn off target and in Kies , it says fail to convert into safe mode...
Now Tablet stayed at the screen with "Downloading ... Do not turn off target!!!" No any response!

BTW, I never rooted.
Update. Thank you for everyone in this post for response.
After google from internet, I found a solution.
1) first, after you had "Downloading ... Do not turn off target!!!" screen, Please do not panic ( I did when it happened and really said f*^@ word to Samsung..forgive me...).
2) Press power button + volume down, and hold until it turns off.
3) say "god bless me" or "Mom, please save me." and press whatever combination of buttons you can.
4) It suddenly reboot after that and please use OTA to update. not kies.
5) as far as I can tell, works fine now. However, connect to Kies with wifi does not work.
Were you on a custom rom prior or rooted? If so, did you reset your tab to factory before doing the OTA?
Get back in recovery and flash your back up. If it fails you will have to ODIN your rom in
No problems here using kies, I was only rooted though and I still have root
Do I have to be connected to a PC to get this update? Isn't wifi enough?
You can use wi-fi for OTA update. OP's issue is that even though the tablet went into Download mode, Kies still didn't think it is in download mode. The firmware update hasn't even started to push down to tablet yet.
Based on the earlier problems, you're better off using Kies. If it fails, like it did for OP, it's smart enough to know that and when you disconnect and reconnect the Tab it should automatically go in to emergency recovery mode. What happened to OP happens occasionally with Kies updates. A lot has to do with the PC it's running on and what else is running on that PC. Kies is far from perfect and I'm guessing OP's issue isn't with the new ROM it's with Kies.
I didn't get the update OTA, but just updated with Kies. Had to re-flash CWM and root, but everything works just fine.
Changing to another USB port solved the problem for me. The drivers for the download stage to the tablet could not been loaded for the port I was connected first.

exactly the same problem. no solution for me yet...
I repeat this: if you think Samsung's firmware and firmware updates are buggy, Kies is even worse.

Quite true. Kies is terrible. My Galaxy 10.1 wifi won't connect to it at all -- it just sits there attempting to connect. No indication of what's wrong, no log files, nothing. I wasted over an hour last night trying to figure out what was wrong -- removed all "ghost" USB devices, installed Intel INF driver updates, de-installed all active USB hubs & devices, etc.
I even updated Kies to 2.1 ... nothing. Very frustrating.
still no luck with upgrading with kies. it connects to tab, downloads the update to the pc,
the tab goes into download mode in order to install the update, and then connection between kies and tab is lost....
i have the latest kies, i have the drivers, i tried another usb port, i have done a factory reset, but still nothing.
Hi, all.
I just received my T-Mobile S3 today. Installed the most current version of Kies, as I don't trust the cloud for syncing, and synced with Outlook. Worked great. Nice to see this feature is enabled after dealing with my unsupported Vibrant for so long.
It's interesting. On the opening page of Kies, there is a heading for "Firmware Information", then beneath that, in big orange letters, "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies." It goes on to list "Current firmware version: PDA:LEM / PHONE:LEM / CSC:LEM (TMB).
In any case, in Kies, under "Tools", there are three interesting buttons, "Emergency Firmware Recovery", "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization", and "Firmware Upgrade Settings".
The "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization" button says my model isn't supported for that feature. The "Firmware Upgrade Settings" just lets you specify whether Kies should automatically download any firmware updates.
However, when I clicked "Emergency Firmware Recovery", it seemed to be working and attempted to connect to my phone. Seeming as how my phone is working just fine and I just finished inputting all my settings, etc., I cancelled it, so I'm not really sure what it might do.
I know at least one person had posted that they were having trouble booting after attempting a flash (I think), so maybe someone in that situation, or maybe someone more curious than me, could download Kies and see what this option does.
Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try agai
Hi. I got the problem where I cant use my tab, because it just shows this message: Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
It happened because I tried rooting my tab in Odin. At first it failed, I tried it a second time and it kind of lagged.. so being my stupid self I disconnected the tab and since then I have this problem.
I tried looking for some resolutions, but half of them either uses Odin:
1. which I really dont know how to use
2. which considers the tab being in download mode. My tab cant even do that.. when I hold the Power+home+volume down buttons, the screen goes black and then the same message comes back.
The second half of resolutions is with Kies. I didnt know about Kies earlier, so it doesnt have my tab details stored there.
I dont know if Kies has to have your tab stored to use the 'Firmware Upgrade and Initialisation' option, but I tried in anyway. When I write in my model, which is SM-T230NU, it shows that the model information I entered cannot be verified.
When I charged my tab a bit and connected to my computer, Kies isnt able to find it. It finds that something is connected, because it shows that it's connecting, but then it stops, then connects, and the same over and over.
Anyways, I have a Samsung galaxy Tab 4 7.0, model SM-T230NU, and I really want to try and repair it on my own before I give it to service.
Please dont hate on my stupidity, because I'm not really into technology..
Hey guys! Greetings from Spain
I've a Tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T580 and it displays the following error each time I power on: "An error has ocurred while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software.".
I can not go to any menu or somewhere else and I've seen it's a common troubleshoot when root or flash custom ROMs, but I've never done anything like that.
I've already tried the following things:
Connect it with Smart Switch, but the software says my model is not supported. As I've seen in some guides with this troubleshooting, I've tried to test with an older SmartSwitch release or try some options with "More" button, like reinstall device drivers or use Emergency recovery software tool, but device was not displayed on the list and any of these options have worked.
Connect it with Samsung Kies, but device is on "Connecting" status everytime and nothing else happens.
Try to reinstall an official ROM with Odin, however, is not possible to put it in Download Mode as when I press Home + Power + Vol Down it reboots displaying again the same error.
Contact with Samsung support, but they just asked me to follow stupid steps for newbies and conclude telling me I should go to an official technical service and pay as is not under warantee anymore.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can suggest is to unplug it while showing the error screen, and let the battery run down completely. Then plug in a charger while holding the three buttons.

Pilot error.
You're not holding the 3 buttons for long enough. Keep held down until download mode appears.
Hi,
I have this problem with this same tablet. I've spent several days trying every option on xda.
The one solution that seem to work for some people is referenced in this post:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79232815&postcount=40
I've tried to do this as well but odin fails while trying to flash system.img. Hopefully it works for you.
(somewhere in that same thread it said to get the "cellular south" firmware from sammobile and try to flash that as it is supposed to not have the FRP-lock feature which (among other things) blocks flashing from odin.)
After much grief with this tablet I think the best use case for it is to recycle it for parts, to use it as a paper weight or to throw it really hard into the head of the CEO of Samsung.
Hi
my friend have Tab S5e I don't know what he do but right now the tab does not turn on and if I charge it a message showed up
"an error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the emergency recovery function in smart switch PC software"
I know with this message mean use ODIN to flash firmware but the device restart every 2 sec
I charge it for 1 hour but the same thing
what should I do now?
Thanks
I have this same exact problem after trying to install the original files with odin, any help would be extremely helpful
same thing is happening with my s5e tablet
the reboots make it impossible to flash anything with Odin (since it restarts so fast, it doesn't leave Odin enough time to send/write those firmware files)
