Good ear phones w/mic - EVO 4G General

looking for good ear buds with a mic, with or without controls that work with the evo.

fyi, the iphone earbuds have very low volume on the evo. that is what i wanted at first but i ended up just getting headphones and using the mic on the phone during phone calls.
hopefully someone has a good suggestion

i purchased the Skull Candy 50/50 set with in line mic and controls. very impressed so far. the mic and button work, volume controls don't appear to work though. pretty good for $50 IMO

I've got a pair of skullcandies with a mic and controls that mostly work. Check it out on their site. The only thing that hasn't worked for me was the volume controls.
D'oh, seconds late.

My review of the Jawbone Bluetooth Headset

Dear all,
I've made a review of the Jawbone Bluetooth Headset here: http://blog.evolvedsoftwarestudios....se-introducing-the-jawbone-bluetooth-headset/
The basis of the review was a bluetooth headset purchase with noise cancellation for use with my HTC Kaiser.
I hope that you find the review useful. Feel free to comment here or on my blog, critisism (please do not be rude) or thoughts are welcome.
Many thanks!
Good review, I like all the points you covered. I agree that the Jawbone is probably the best I've heard (pun intended) for noise cancellation. I've tested it under several conditions (extremely loud music; car at highway speeds with windows down; NYC streets) and it cancels noise well.
My only two problems are
a) I can never seem to get the device loud enough. The automatic volume works well enough, but it doesn't seem to go up high enough to cover very loud scenarios, like the NYC streets scenario.
b) I can't get the thing to fit my ear. I've tried every combination of ear buds and ear hooks, but it never fits my ear well. I always have to readjust it every few minutes so it doesn't fall off. I might try that link in your review for the custom ear bud company.
Nice review, the only additional issues I see are;
1 - The Jawbone on Kaiser has a lower inbound audio level that many other phones (an HTC problem really, but other headsets do work OK with kaiser). I use it but it's barely acceptable to me. It would be better with a custom ear bud to direct the sound better.
2 - The Jawbone's noise cancelling is awesome in a speeding car, in a room with lots of background noise, BUT, it fails miserably when exposed to direct wind of almost any velocity. In wind many callers have said that they can barely hear me until I turn and hide the Jawbone from the wind.
3 - The US price is List $129 USD but $80 Street, not bad at all.
4 - The custom charge dongle is a negative, however after you become completely attached to this headset, you'll eventually loose one, or two, and soon have spares! I now have two
Hello,
dis39tif: My Jawbone is pretty loud. The startup beep is uncomfortably loud and leaves my ears ringing if I turn the Jawbone on whilst wearing it.
Initially I had fitting problems as well (falling off), so I chose one of the hooked/lipped earpieces and hook the Jawbone earhook over my ear like putting on a pair of sunglasses. Then I hold the Jawbone with one hand and twist the front part upwards. This puts the sensor on my cheekbone and not my jawbone, but still it works well and the fit is more snug.
RemE: I've read that the Jawbone on Kaiser has been reported ot be quieter. I can't say I've really noticed when trying with the Hermes. Seems the same to me. A custom earbud should help (based on info from other users). I've also read that wind noise isn't blocked while the user is talking, but it isn't blocked on any earpiece and Jawbone still does better than the other sets on the market at keeping unwanted noise out. Re: US pricing, I live in "rip off Britain". Prices for everything is higher here. I wonder if I can get a VISA to live in Delaware Re: charging cable, I'd like to have seen a micro usb port.
liddlefeesh -
I agree, the startup beep is quite loud. I wish the volume during calls was louder. I've tried pressing the button which turns off the automatic volume and lets you manually change the volume, as well as messing with the volume on the kaiser. Don't get me wrong, it's still quite usable. I just wish it went a bit louder.
Thanks for the fitment idea. I'll try it out.
Better ear bud fitment and sound for Jawbone

Get a pair of Jabra ear gels from RadioShack, attach them to the Jawbone - better fit, better sound. The combo works great for me.

By chance do you still have the Radio Shack part number for these gels?

Compatible Headphones

Does anyone know if you can use headphones made for the iPhone with a Focus? The headphones that come with it are actually decent, but I'd like to upgrade and every set of headphones with an inline mic are made for iPhones. All I really need working is the microphone and volume control; the extra pause button isn't a big deal.
I just tried a Apple volume-enabled set of headphones and the play/pause/call button worked but not the volume control.
The mic and headphones work great though.
The headphones that come with the Focus have volume control on them, so maybe other non-Apple branded headphones would work with volume control.
Thanks for checking that. I guess it's not so bad to have the volume not working since the buttons on the device work with the screen off.
I picked up some cheap iFrogz Luxe and the work fine.
No volume control but the mic and pause worked OK.
http://ifrogz.com/product/EP-LB-MIC
I also picked up a set of Etymotic MC3's and they didn't work worth a damn.

Replacement headphones

Anyone knows what headphones + mic + control will work with the Focus?
I love the original ones!! but I haven't found any option with the same buttons
Thanks
I have broken my original ones and found out the Beats and skull candy which have a microphone are not compatible... sound goes through but microphone does not pick up sound.
I did find a few sites claiming compatibility with V-moda's vibe duo headsets and have ordered them online and will arrive today. I will post an update if the mic works with Focus.
EDIT; if you like my comments please give me a thanks

Thanks, please let me know if they work. Those v-moda's has the 3 buttons? in the remote control?
The original ones are perfect! I really like them even versus one expensive phillips ones with noise cancelling electronics
The v-moda's arrived and work perfectly. they don't have the three buttons but you can answer calls and what not... the sound quality is honestly phenomenal, they sound better than the beats headphones that I returned because of MIC incompatibility.
they are just as pricey as the Beats running you about 100 bucks but it is way worth it

But those earphones don't have volume control keys right?
Headphones
I've tried the klipsch s4i which has three buttons for the iphone. the pause/unpause button works and also can skip ahead or backwards by pressing twice/three times. the mic or the two volume buttons didn't work for me though.

right but they sound great and you can skip the track with double click
another headphone
so i tried another set of headphones. this time the headphones with an in-line remote that came with the third gen ipod. Same things work such as the klipsch, pause, play, skip, and backwards work. you can also use this and klipsch to answer calls but the mic doesn't work so its kind of pointless. the volume buttons don't work either.
i really would love to find better headphones than the stock ones, i like good quality headphones
Have you guys tried the OEM headphones from the Captivate?

[Q] Earphones Mic too low volume

From Day one i have been trying to get good earphones with Mic for nexus 4
tested out more than 6-7 quality earphones with mic like J6M, Klipsh, etc
but the microphone volume on the other end of call is too less compared to apple ear phones( recently switched from iphone)
I have to keep the mic piece really close to my mouth for a good conversation...
can someone help me here.. the mic on nexus 4 works perfect but when i connect earphones the problem begins... i used mic sensitivity apps to test and they pick very less volume from the connected mic
How do i boost the mic sensitivity on earphones or should i return the phone
Will try with my skullcandy's and revert

I'm having the exact same problem - did you find a fix?
I tried quite a few.. expensive as well as cheap ones. finally i got hold of a cheap ear phone set and the volume to the other end is good to be heard (as I have been reported).. While trying them all, I was calling my friend and asking him.. so thats how I know i picked the best one. However, since it extremely loud.. i kinda have to keep it away from my ear a bit and volume on phone is turned down to minimum.. Plus, due to its sheer loudness, I can hear the buzzing sound.. For the first time i noticed it, i.e.: through these extreme loud ear phones. The other party hears it too. Never heard it while on call directly using the ear piece. Strange.

Do you mind me asking which brand headphones you are referring too here? I have the same issue.
I bought from a local shop. It was a knock off of beats audio. The sounds it throws is EXTREMELY loud.
Is it just me, or does the OP make very little sense? I'm completely lost at what he's trying to ask.. Something about the mic? or the sound output of the "earbuds"?
No trouble here with any of the wired earbud sets I've tried. Clear as a bell and no buzzing.
If its so Loud for you, what are you not adjusting the volume? Would kinda of make sense to do so...
Or you could upgrade in your tech and get a bluetooth earbud.. I have absolutely no problem with volume levels from my Jawbone; I'm hear clearly and I can hear them just find (even when driving with all windows down, it sounds like they are right next to me yelling)

Nope, it's you. OP was referring to the mic volume on the headset being low, but in filthykids response, he mentioned that the headphones that solved the quiet mic is also very loud on the earpieces.
Also having the same problem, BTW.

Some headphones not working.

Hi,
I have a pair of xiami piston headphones and they work fine with my older phone (galaxy s3) but with my 6P they are not detected by the phone. I can't use them to listen to music or make calls.
I tried a pair of generic headphones and they do work. Is there some headphones that are simply incompatible with the device?
Yes I had the same experience. My samsung headphones from my galaxy s5 can't be used to make phone calls and if you try to use the volume adjustment buttons it pauses playback. Another pair of off-brand headphones I bought at duane reade work just fine for making calls. It is strange because w/ my galaxy I could use apple headphones or really any brand and they all worked fine. They should all work exactly the same.
I just hope this is a software compatibility issue with the in-line mic/controls and not a hardware issue. I have three pairs of pistons 2's that I used on a regular basis with my oneplus.

I have found the same issue...hopefully software.
+1
My V-Moda Crossfade LP2s are unable to control anything on the 6P, where they worked just fine on the LG G4
I was able to get my Piston 2 working by holding the VOLUME DOWN button while pluging them. but the controls on the cable do not work. but I have sound at least.

That's odd that audio would completely fail.
I just tried another headphone pair I have. They are Klipsch Image S4i and the middle button works, even though these are iPhone specific headphones (hence the i in the name). The volume buttons on it don't do anything.

Isn't there an app that can remap the "input" it sees from the headphones?
I'm encountering issues across ALL headphones with inline buttons, including Sony, Beats, and the Project Fi headphones. I'm on my second device now (RMA'd the first to see if it was device-specific), and all exhibit the same issue: double-click to skip track fails when the device is locked after a certain number of presses, and recogntion of the inline button is generally sporadic when the device is locked.
HOWEVER! Everything is perfect when the device is unlocked! So this has to be a software issue, right?
i'm having issues where the headphones seem to be working, but the mute button is not muting the headphones (but they do mute the call). so i hear EVERYTHING in my ears. its like a weird loopback.

There was a thread about this, maybe it was you who posted it.
My S4i headphones can control music (pause/unpause) with the screen off. I have Smart Lock enabled with my Moto 360 though, so not sure if that makes a difference. I also finally updated to MDB08L this morning. I was stuck on MDA89D until I manually sideloaded the MDB08K OTA (then the MDB08L OTA was downloaded by the phone).
I just tried my V-Moda Crossfades and those still are not able to control anything with the screen lock or unlocked (last time I had used them was before the software update)

That sounds like a feature I might like to enable sometimes at work, but it would be annoying when trying to isolate everything around me!

it wasn't such a nice feature as i was walking from my car and the mic was rubbing on the zipper of my jacket and i could hear it and the wind in my ears. if i covered the mic with my hand, the sound went away, so it seems like there is definitely a software issue.

I get that when using the Klipschs, but it's the vibration traveling through the wire and into my ears (since they are in-ear headphones), and it is annoying.
i use Apple EarPods. $29. love them.
My Xiaomi Pistons were the only set of headphones that didn't work at all (music played through front-facing speakers and not the headphones). All other headphones I own seem to have the same compatibility issues as all other Android headsets vs iPhone made headsets in regards to the in-line buttons working or not.
I hate in-ear/noise-cancelling/over-ear options since I use headphones while walking around the city and still prefer to still hear what's going on around me. Apple EarPods work but the in-line volume buttons don't work. Play/Pause/Answer/End button works fine though. My only other option that I've discovered is the Amazon Fire Headset. They are similar pods that don't isolate sound and all buttons on the headset work fine.

mine didn't work as well. however, my amazon ones worked and i could also use vol up and pause, but vol down wasn't working.
So now my headphones are working apparently, the inline mic controls, pause/play volume up and down now work.
Using the Sennheiser Mm30g.
The Bose QC25s work like a charm along with the inline controls.
But...you need to buy the "made for Android" version.
I also have the pistons and they no longer work
My jaybird bluebirds x work perfectly. Need to test in my Lexus, however, pairing went fine so expect it will be ok.
