[Solved] App/Backup Issue after switching ROM's - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've been switching ROM's a lot now that we have lots of ROM's to choose from.
My phone seems to be backing up all my apps and all from each ROM I use then installs them while I'm setting up the new ROM. Kind of nice, but sometimes it installs two of the same apps. ie Terminal Emulator.
I have this lingering weather thing going on each time I come out of the lock screen. It's just annoying that it happens with every ROM I flash and it's still there every time. Sun in the right corner then some clouds. It's seriously zero degrees outside I hardly feel like I'm on an island drinking pina coladas.
Any fix to make it stop? I'm enjoying the gloom!
edit: I figured it out it wasn't Beautiful Widgets it was Weather Widget Addon App. changed settings and all is right in the world.

uninstall tewrminal emulator, its included as a system app in most roms. Installit if its missing after a flash.
Do you use beautiful widgets? Theres a setting to turn off the weather animation when you unlock the phone.

Yes I have beautiful Widgets. I checked the settings. Not using any of them right now.

Message widget causes lag on homescreen

Hi.
I don't know if it's only my DHD.
I have htc message widget (black one, not the white one that looks like post-it note) on one of the home screens.
Ever so often when I swipe through home screens that widget is refreshing names and phone numbers that are in the widget (if you have john smith it will delete the name show his number instead and place name back) and when you swipe further to the next screen it lags for few seconds.
Problem is the more messages i have the more it lags
Debugging is not helping and turning fast boot of doesn't change anything either
Unless someone knows a replacement widget to be placed on home screen

Replacement widget ? Well, i use this one, even if it is paid, it's in my opinion the best on the market now :

Good to know you're getting this problem too Matt, as far as I'm aware it's just that the htc widgets are pants. Which is a shame, because I think they look good and are easy to use.
I use the large message, mail and calender widgets and each of them take between 1-3 seconds to refresh. I've even tried to turn off refresh on open where possible just incase, and even disabled mobile data and wifi and it's the same.
The Facebook and Twitter Android widgets work fine, they're already updated before flicking to their screen, which is what is expected from the htc widgets.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a fix? Is there a setting I'm missing?
I think the answer may be live with it or get another widget, which would be a shame.
All suggestions are helpful

Second that statement, it's usually not something wrong with your phone/your widget version. I've noticed most HTC widgets do end up lagging there are plenty of third party widgets though that do it better.
When I get my phone back on I'll give you the name of a couple I use.
All HTC widget are lags. Maybe they need to free up some memory everytime its not under user's sight so that other apps can run faster with more memory....then it will need to refresh again...
yup, it suxx everytime i swipe to that corner of my homescreen.. omfg its coming! lol actualy the first time i flash/mod my dhd i was expecting it to be smoothen, but ugh..fat chance it really feels like im still at stock rom

I can give you one to play with if you want. Its a work in progress as far as a full home-replacement app. I am working on making an app drawer, then making everything around that. Like I said, I can make an .apk for you that is a simple grid view that shows all the apps on the device and launches them. There is a random layout animation that plays when the gridView is first called. Just pm me if you would like to try it out

Themes, widgets, ROMS, oh my!

Had my Blade for about a month now, tried half a dozen roms, settled on Jap Jellyfish with some tweaks, overclocked kernel, black status bar, yadda yadda yadda.
I have looked at people's home screens, and think... why? I tried having a big clock or circle battery widget, I still instinctively look to the status bar up top. I've tried various other widgets, but everything just seems to get in the way.
I have only one home screen populated with stuff I use regularly, Droid48, Email widget, contacts, power control and google search. I have seen some things that I think look cool, but don't see the point in doing, does it really add enough to my user experience to be worth the juggling and hoops?
So far the only real modifications I would consider heavier than just applying a couple zip files (Forst paragraph), I have made involve Widgetlocker, and a couple sliders, plus... Droid48. Sometimes I just really, really need to have a calculator. Maybe I'm just not cut out for this pretty phone thing.
No offense, but whats the point of this post?
A few questions buried in there, will the heavy mods actually make my experience any better? Are there any changes that are. aactually worth the effort?

you've hit the nail on the head with "look cool". that's a pretty good reason. plenty of apple owning friends are pretty jealous of the widgets possible on my blade. and i remind them often that it's £100 vs £500.
i agree that overkill is possible but it all depends on what you want from your phone.
ive got a calendar and task widget on my home screen so i always know my next engagement.
ive got a widget showing what torrent my server is currently grabbing.
on one page i've got a page full of my best mates + family photos grabbed straight from facebook which i far prefer over going to the contacts app then favourites.
and everyone needs the instant buttons app so you're only ever 2 presses away from playing the tumbleweed sound effect after someone cracks an awful joke....
Ok some good ideas there, and I have gotten some other ideas elsewhere. The scrolling wallpaper that is making the rounds has given me the inspiration to try out some things, and I am starting to understand the allure of themeing.
Noticing somedistinct improvements with 2. 2 as well.

I'm pretty much from the same school of thinking with android. I only had my blade for a few weeks now & I've come from an iPhone & I really think less is more. I have launcher pro plus installed with only two homescreens.
One which simply has typo clock widget, a basic helvetica clock & a shortcut to my camera. The typoclock takes me to my alarm clock if i press it & obviously i got the launcher pro dock with browser, sms, gmail etc & swipe gestures for all 5.
The 2nd has a facebook widget, a setCPU widget, couple of folders for games/utilities & a few more short cuts to apps I use regularly (Astro, market, cal, maps etc....).
Have you tried the 0x90 addon for Jjelly? It let's you put the power control widget at the top of your notification bar, esier to get to & frees up home screen space! It also let's you tweak your home screen a bit, add a music player control (which works with spotify ) It's a brilliant mod, you should give it a try.

[Q] Liberty Rom Launcher

Does anyone know if the launcher or "dock" is customizable in the Liberty Rom? I'm getting kinda tired of Launcherpro as I've been using it for 6 months now... The widgets don't seem to function like they use to for some reason, not updating like they should be, etc. I'm trying to find out if I can change the shortcuts and icons on the dock or add screens, since there are only 5... Any help would be great. Thanks.
Do you mean lack of updates with launcherpro? That is because fede(dev) is doing a complete rewrite of launcherpro so that's why there hasn't been alot of updates.. if you're tired of launcherpro why don't you change some icons around and such? i haven't really tried any other launcher.. but I've read that launcherpro is one of the few that allows customizing every aspect of it...hope i don't sound like a dbag if you already know all this

Yeah, I knew all that, no big deal. lol. funny thing is, maybe i'm trying to be a little more simple. I think I've used every icon, color, option possible for LP+ and I'm just a little tired of it. GO Launcher is basically the same thing just more screens. Don't like ADW. that leaves the basic launcher. Like I said, the widgets just don't seem to be acting right on LP lately. Not updating properly even when I try to do it manually. So trying to customize the stock Liberty launcher/dock is my last option right now. Maybe if fede's rewrite is updated alot, I'll go back to it.
I've tried the other major players like Adw and GoLauncher, but I always end up coming back to LP mainly for the widgets. IMO, they are the best available on the market for my needs, especially the facebook and calendar widgets. Aside from that, LP seems to be the fastest because Fede kept everything simple and clean looking instead of loading it up with hidden dock bars and window transitions (I know, he added some with the last update). If you're really looking to spice it up some, check out Dreamlyfe for some nice docks and icon sets.

where do i find this dreamlyfe??? doesn't show up in market and cant find an apk online anywhere..??
nevermind. found it at androidforums... thanks. getting ready to download now. looks sweet. kinda what I was looking for to "spice" it up as you say!

A few android question

Hi,
I've been with WinMo since 2001 until about a week ago when I switched to andriod. I have many questions and was unsure where to turn to. I will try here. If there is a better place, please let me know.
I have a Desire Z that I got with ATT 3G bands. I have successfully rooted the device, overclocked it, and installed Cyanogen 6.
1) When I hit the power button, I still have to swipe my finger across the screen to unlock. How do I make it so I don't have to do this?
2) I had some difficulty upgrading to Cyanogen 6 and was unable to get 7 to work. IfI want to mess around further with roms, is there some way I can backup EVERYTHING so if I screw up, I can make my phone exactly the way I have it now without a whole lot of work re-installing stuff, etc.?
3) The link to the phone, app, and browser are all stuck on the bottom of the phone. Can I get rid of this?
4) When laying apps out on the home screen, there seems to be some kind of grid that they are locked into that makes it hard to move them exactly where I want them. It will let me lay them so they overlap each other, but not very close to each other. Is there some way to overcome this?
5) I can't seem to arrange apps close to the top of the screen because the garbage can overlay slides down and when I move the app near the top it thinks I am trying to throw it away.
6) Is there an app that will show both the current weather and an icon for the weather conditions in the status bar?
Wow, a lot of questions...
1, Go to Settings->CyanogenMod Settings->Input Settings and select Trackball wake/Trackball Unlock or Menu Unlock and after that you will be able to select Disable Unlock Slider
2, Try Titanium Backup (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup)
3, As far as I know CM6 uses ADW.Launcher as default launcher. You can change it to LauncherPro (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fede.launcher) which is fully customisable
4, There is a grid which can't be changed
5, LauncherPro has the trash icon at the bottom
6, Sorry, I didn't find any

Hello Everyone.
I went and found some of these answers on my own. I also was able to upgrade to CM7.
1) I found an app for it but will try PsHeger's solution.
2) I found that the bootloader/Rom manager do a good job of this, too.
3) I was able to remove it in the app launcher rather than using pro.
4) This absolutely pisses me off. I have a Winmo 6.5 phone that lets me have a nice, organized home screen. I can't believe there isn't a better solution to this. Good lord.
6) Go Weather App does this.
if you set your grid settings to 10x10 rows and columns in launcher pro, you can put the icons and widgets pretty much anywhere.

You can try this, but you will need to buy a pro key for laincherpro to strech the widgets or they will look really stuid

I found that the auto stretch check box pretty much solved the problem with layout.
