Okay... I suppose I made a mess. I had tried to access the SD card of my brand new Desire HD via HTC Sync and it never worked. Then I had the brillant idea of put the card in the SD card reader of my PC.
The SD card reader spent a few time trying to read the thing, then Windows popped up a message saying "The card is unreadable, do you want to format it" and said happily yes, without realizing that there were a number of Android applications there...
I can still my Desire HD, it works perfectly fine however I have seen that there are a few HTC applications which are missing in the application list.
I tried to recover the files via Recuva, without success.
Any idea? Is there an image of the SD card floating somewhere over internet that I could use to restore it?
Thanks in advance for any hint (and btw if you want to toss in that I am an idiot please go ahead, I deserve it after... )

Unless you have some other valuable data on the SD card (like pictures, music, docs, etc.), you could try to reflash your phone with stock ROM, and it will most probably install all the apps again. And then you just grab non - HTC apps off the Market and you're ready to go.
Thanks - but the phone is working perfectly, I do not need to reflash it. It is 100% fine except for the missing HTC apps.
What I have lost are the HTC applications which were located on the SD card (now formatted) - I believe all I need is to find an archive of the contents of the SD card and copy it in the (now empty) SD card.

You will hardly find that anywhere. I would still recommend reflashing the phone, no matter if it works well. Just backup everything you need and reflash it, that's the safest way to restore HTC apps as far as I know.

Hi, am not 100% sure, but the only HTC related stuffs in my memory card was some PDF files (manuals), and the HTC Sync installation file. I have formatted my card as well ( as had partitioned my card), and downloaded the SYNC soft from HTC website. I doubt you will ever need those manuals ...
I think what petarpetrovic is saying above is that you may have installed some apps, but they were installed on ur sd card. so a reflash is recommended as there may be a chance that some important apps may have been installed in the sd card.

I have a 512 SD memory card, which when initially placed into my MDA compact was working fine. I have transferred files via activesync and the MDA was reading it at 512mb.
However, a couple of weeks ago. I had a message on the MDA asking if I would like to format the card for reading by this device. Initially I said no, however, it kept on coming up persistently until I clicked yes.
The format was done and I am now showing a size on my SD card of 139mb.
I have seen some of the previous posts and have bought a SD reader/writer, whilst this works perfectly, my card is still only 139mb. I have a feeling that the movie I transferred is taking up the rest of the memory, but not showing anywhere for me to remove it.
Does anyone have any suggestions, other than gentle pursasion with a hammer, to return the card to its proper size. Free would be best of course.
Thanks
In windows (your desktop computer) enable the option "view-hidden files"... perhaps you will find a lot of hidden files on your sd.
Otherwise, format the sd.
Sven,
Thanks for your response, tried hidden files, no luck. Also formatted the sd card and it still only reads 139mb. Shall I hit it with a hammer?
Cheers
Mark
adz1478,
Unzip the attachment onto your computer...
With your SD card in a card reader, format the card.
You should hopefully retreive full capacity- needless to say everything saved on the card will be gone.
worked perfectly, you just saved me £20 on a new card. Cheers

Yep- no probs.
When you try to format the card from Windows- it does not always comply with the SD 1.1 specs. This is what the formatter program does.
Same problem - but!
When I tried the formatter program it thinks the card is write protected even though on the outside it is not! So i can't format it to the correct side.
Any ideas please?
Can you change the SD Card in WP7 from a 4GB card to an 8GB or 16GB card without reformating the Phone.
Thanks

You can change it, but you'll lose everything you've installed and have an out the box phone so to speak.
Well at least that's what happened when I changed from my test SD card to my 8GB

I use SanDisk
no!!!will not read the new sd,you have to format the new one with the rom you are installing.
N.B: sandisk 8G is highly stable with wp7...
you can switch sd cards without starting over, but then you'd have to copy the partition from your old sd card to your new sd card.
it gets slightly complicated, but only because of the numbers of steps, not technical complications.
use Easeus partition software and try to replicate the exact partitions across the old card and the new card
good luck

Did this work for you? I made a thread about this possibility but nobody knew if it's really working.
Hey there,
my question is the other way. Is it possible to flash an other rom without having my SD in to safe settings and installed apps?
I tested this way:
1. turn off phone
2. pull out the SD
3. boot
My HD2 booted into WP7 and ran a blank WP7 such as it was fresh installed.
Then I turned it off and put the SD back in and booted. It booted into my ol status.
So no I want to if I can flash an other rom, put my already formatted SD with my WP7 settings back in? Is that maybe the best way to safe settings?

i think this link will explain you how to copy the partitions....and more
http://www.techienote.com/tag/technology
Thanks jianototi,
copying the wp7 partition between different sd cards works very well. The system accepts the copy and wp7 launches with all adjustments, downloads and installed apps.
My question now is: Can I reinstall a fresh wp7 nand and insert my sd from old installation? Will the sd be accepted? Or start wp7 with a virgin system?
regards
caiowa
so if we can move a wp7 from one sd card to another. Should it then not be possible to download from the internet, and just copy to sd-card?
Reason i ask is because i cannot get my wp7 to connnect to pc, so i cant get live services. However there seems to be a version now, where i just need to activate the phone.
If someone uploaded their data, can i download it, and update my wp7 that way?
yes put the new sdcard and restar to factory values

i was under the impression that it uses some sort of RAID over the card.
the best way to tell is to copy the card factory rest with one SD card, then swap the cards afterwards. Myguess is that it wont work the way you want it too, i doubt it will "give" you everything back on again.
How can this be done?
I have a class 2 sandisc which I consider slow... I have a class 6 on the way but already setup wp7 the way I like it... Is it a matter of simply swapping cards and resyncing zune? Or will there be apps on the card?
From what I understand the SD card is formatted and prepared in such a way that the SD Card becomes part of the main storage so if you change SD cards it will be as though you have a brand new WP7 install...
Stupid question. But if I swap out cards to a faster, better quality card and start from scratch, would I need to buy all my apps again or will it recognise I have purchased it before like the old marketplace?
As long as you use the same account details all will be well. The apps are linked with your account, not a specific installation.
I used Minitool Partition manager to copy my partitions from my old SD card to the new one. Worked like a charm. Everything (settings and apps) was intact.
Cheers for that, downloaded and installed... I'll give it a whirl when my card comes in the mail...

REALLY!? that will work? Now what if like in my case, I just installed a NAND Android ROM, but used a different SD Card. When I re-install WP7 when Nodo comes out, can I just install WP7 w/o the SD Card in place then put it in on reboot and all my stuff will be there?
I know probably a long shot, but would like to try or know if anyone has tried.

There is a difference between your case and the OP's case. In the OP's case, the ROM knows the old SD card's config (partitions, files etc), so it would work fine as long as the new SD card also has the same partition layout and files. In your case, after re-install, it is a new ROM, so he would repartition the SD card.
I had tried to use a copied card after a ROM reset, but it re-created the partitions. So a ROM reinstall should behave similar. Anyway, it is worth giving a try.
I've a strange problem with my hd2.
all files on SD card or EXT can't be deleted. after deleting it then boot it returns again. i tried formatting SC card and formatting also phone memory with task29 but again all files returned.

Android creates a lot of stuff on the SD card, as long as the SD card is in the phone and the phone is being used you will have some files on your SD. If you format the card outside of the phone (e.g. with a card reader on a PC) you'll be able to delete everything, but as soon as you use it in the phone stuff will appear on the card again. In the EXT partition this will often be apps if you have an EU HD2 as there's not much internal storage. To be honest, it shouldn't be much of an issue at all seeing as normally these things don't take up much storage at all.

HI guys,
Trying to find a successful way to transfer my app data (Installed apps which were moved to sd card) from my old micro sd card to my new larger one. Simple copy and paste within windows did not work.
After some searching I found this thread tomsguide.com/forum/id-1607981/moving-data-microsd-card-android-smartphone
It seemed to be the only possible solution with only 2 people acknowledging it worked.
I also have a videos folder which I would want to be ignored when doing the transfer (to save time- there are many vids in the folder).
Any help and input is greatly appreciated.
Samsung Galaxy S4 M919 T-mobile. Android 4.3 - Rooted with stock ROM.
Thanks.

Copy paste worked fine for me in the past.
Why don't you move your apps to the internal storage until you got the new sd card, then move them back?

Internal storage is just about full and the apps are many.
Is Windows capable of successfully reading the android files and copying them? The card is formatted exFAT..Should it be formatted NTFS instead?
I haven't formatted anything. Besides, formatting will wipe the sd card.
I simply copied all the contents from the sd card to the pc and then to the new sd card. Had no problems so far.
Widows is just a temporary storage, it doesn't need any rights over them.
Aren't there any sd card clone programs? Like the ones used for cloning HDD partitions and transfering their contents to another HDD?

Thanks for following up on this frustrating issue.
The only android items which show in my old external card are the android folder which contains the obb folder. The other android based folder is a "data" folder which is empty.
Both of these were copied to the new external card with no luck.
Is there something I should be copying from the phones storage onto the new external card? I don't know why this is such an issue :/
What items show on your external card that you were able to successfully copy to your new one? I even tried navigating using ES Explorer and the only item that shows, which Windows cannot see, is a hidden android folder with nothing in it. ..If the original external sd has the same items as the new exteral card, this would lead me to believe that the android OS is simply linking something to the external card to link the external card apps to the OS.
I have never heard of any such programs for cloning from an android based system...
I selected everything (CTRL + A) and then copied it to the new card. Even if there were hidden folders, they were copied.
Game data is generally stored in the obb folder on the internal storage.
How exactly did you move your apps to the sd card?

I just copied and pasted to the new card. Nothing was missing.
All the shortcuts are still in the OS but they are all blank and show as 0kb in size. If I try to go into google store it doesn't show any of the updates for the external card, only the ones for the internal storage are listed.
As for the OBB files, those I never keep on my cards, as there is never enough storage. this is not an issue with my internal storage either, as all them apps still show as being installed regardless of whether or not any obb files are there.
This makes no sense. There has to be something that links the external programs to the OS which is not getting copied to the new card...
Do you know Titanium Backup? Just make a backup from everything (all apps and datas) and store it f.e. in the dropbox, change SD Card and restore the backup from the dropbox via Titanium to your phone.

try to get your hands on an OTG cable and connect a USB flash drive to your phone, and use a file explorer like ES to transfer the entire SD card to the USB Flash drive, then fire up the new SD card and copy the items you put on the USB flash drive back to the SD card using ES. This should definitely work and you wouldnt require a pc also.

If the backup from your SD card is stored onto your internal card everything is fine. Just plug your new SD Card in your phone and restore your backup and everything will be back on your new sd card.

Yes. Only 1 hidden android folder which is empty.
Looks like I was able to see the contents of the .android_secured folder using an OTG cable. It contains what look like to be the files required for the apps to be recognized by the OS. Also what i believe to be the files for Google Play to also recognize the apps for updates.
I tried copying the folder but it wont work. However, I was able to copy all the contained files onto the new sd card.
Looks like I'll have to mount it again and just use the titanium backup method.
Backed up all the external data using TB onto the new card...I'm now having trouble restoring the backup to the new card...cant seem to find the option to do so.
I have the backup stored on the new external card.
