I have tried several of the Team Whiskey roms (Nero 2,3, & 5; currently on Bionix-V) as well as the official 2.2 rom and had the same problem in all of them - the WiFi Calling app was draining my battery at a rate of roughly 7%/hour. Then I noticed when I brought the phone to my mom's house, it was only losing about 2%/hour. The difference between our wireless networks is that her's is 802.11g only, where as mine supports 802.11n. So I changed the settings on my router to G-only, and now the battery is only losing 2%/hour at my house as well! I don't know why, but it seems the WiFi Calling app only severely drains the phone's battery on 802.11n networks!
Of course, in the absence of a true fix for this issue, I would prefer to force the phone to use G-only rather than change my entire network, but I have not been able to figure out how to do that. Fortunately, my router supports an additional guest network. Setting the guest network's encryption to WEP supports G-only, while my remaining clients can still connect to the main WPA network with true N speeds.
I would love to hear from other people to determine if an 802.11n network is truly the source of the WiFi Calling app battery drain issue. If it is, maybe a clever developer out there can determine how to fix it!
I only broadcast G signal as mine isn't capable of N and no one uses B and it still saps my battery like the IRS on my wallet.
Bionix-v has wifi calling? Didn't know that, and its also not shown in titanium backup.

Over on Eugene373 site, in the macnut rom for the vibrant, is a zip to remove WiFi calling, and it helps. It removes the associated lib files from the phone, and negates the proper lines in the build.prop by replacing it with a modded one. I integrate this fix into my own build, and it helps battery a whole lot. Granted, if you use WiFi calling, then this is void as it will remove it.

Yeah that's what I'm saying, I haven't installed wifi calling and still I get the same rate of drain on my bionix-v.

Hmm... I wonder if the battery drain is related to just being connected to an 802.11n network. Do you have your wifi on, and, if so, are you connected to an N network? Does turning the wifi off (or connecting to a G network) significantly reduce the battery drain?

its possible,I didnt have an N network to test on when I had my vibrant, but with my fascinate it definitely dies faster when connected to N vs being connected to G.
For what it's worth, I had this problem on my Nexus One as well.

Does the wifi calling app works with other rom besides Bionix?
I simply hated it and deleted it using Root Manager
was interested in it because the reception dropped near my house. It said invalid sim when I did the 2.2 update and the guy at t-mobile said a master reset would resolve it. Still have that issue after the master reset.

At home my cell coverage is a little spotty. It jumps between 1x and evdo frequently. I'm experimenting with WiFi (just set it up yesterday at home) and I haven't yet had a chance to see first hand, but my question is, if I have a solid WiFi connection, is it more battery efficient than solely using the cell radio? I know that just having wifi on will drain the battery hence my confusion.
Strong WiFi is generally better on battery than even a strong EVDO signal. You should be much better off using WiFi. Make sure to set the WiFi to never sleep in the advanced settings.

Is this a new 2.1 option? I didn't even look for it because I am so used to having keepWiFi installed. Also, I have noticed that my wifi signal appears low even though I am only about 50 feet away from my router with only 1 wall in the way running on 802.11g on a dual band router. Also, my router has the ability to broadcast 2 SSIDs to allow for a guest network so you dont have to give out your WPA password to friends and it firewalls them away from your network. I have noticed that my phone has a problem with this. My netbook sees both SSIDs without any problems and stay connected to my main SSID. On my Hero, the main SSID appears and disappears constantly. I have to log onto my guest network because it is the one that my Hero likes for some reason.
In the WiFi setting, click menu and advanced option is available.

Great info. Thanks!
On my Xoom, Verizon 3G kicks WiFi butt. This shouldn't be.
I thought maybe it's the WiFi network(s) I have been connecting to, but I have sampled a variety of networks including my home network with a very strong signal.
Quite a few 'time outs'. Symptom really seems to be if the connect is idle for any length of time, it disconnects. I quite regularly have to do something ''twice', including in 3 different browsers, to push through to a new connection.
Any similar from other users, possible diagnosis's or solutions?
Thanks in Advance.
I think there might be issues with some access points and different tablets. I've heard of similar things with laptops and ipads as well.
The general consensus here however is that the xoom has the fastest wifi out of any tablet device. I don't have the link but I believe one of the review sites tested this.

Thanks for the reply. Further reseach shows its apparently a known issue and is being looked at, for example:
http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/motorola-xoom-help/317-connecting-through-wifi-issues.html
And likely root cause:

A temporary partial work around is to change the WiFi disconnect policy to the "When screen turns off" setting. you will get a delay of about 5 seconds when first connecting to the internet after unlock, but apparently the memory leak is cleared when you reconnect this way. Continual long term browsing will eventually choke up.
No can't say as I have had any wireless issues, other than not being able to tether to my phone, but that's the phone's problem, not my Xoom, stupid Samsung.

I have had the browser FC on me after long wifi browsing. So this bug may have leaked out without getting fixed. i have tried the 3g that much but i will tonight and see what happens.

Yes, that is one of the symptoms of the memory leak. We should see a fix eventually.

Love the eventuall lol. Yeah its not that big of a deal. Its worth it to be a first 3.0 user.
I've definitely experienced this as well. Wi-Fi disconnects and won't reconnect unless I reboot or manually turn off/on. Question, if I use the temp fix to change the Wi-Fi disconnect policy, doesn't that mean my 3G will be used and therefore my allotment of 1Gb / month will be eaten when not using the device due to background sync? Is there a way to turn off 3G as well?

Just turn 3g off... which is what I do, I will only have it on for road trips, ect.
Plus it will only use 3g if WiFi is not available.
Same issue
I had the same issue on my Xoom. Everything after long video streaming, the problem started and the video start to lag and eventually freezed.
If i try the turn off the wifi, it wil stuck at "turning off.........." forever untill i reboot it.
So I just updated my Desire HD with the new 2.3.3 update. I downloaded the update OTA using the wifi connection here at home. The download of the update and the installation itself went fine. When my phone rebooted after the update I was glad to see all my settings and apps were still there.
However, there is no connection to the internet anymore through wifi. It does connect to my wifi as I am able to use the Unified Remote app to control my computer. None of the apps however can use the wifi connection to connect to the internet any more.
I already deleted my wifi settings in my Desire HD and re-added them, but that didn't do anything. A simple reboot didn't solve my problem either. My mobile network connection works fine, although much slower than wifi used to be of course.
Does anyone know what I can do to hopefully get my internet connection working again?

This is a known problem...HTC gotta fix this with a new OTA ...
Btw, i can connect to my wifi, and also browse market and web with the standard browser..
Ps:Whit new 2.3.3 Ota..
Chefs have found the WiFi problem. It's not really a big problem. But HTC implemented a minimum WiFi signal strength, which is set high.
So if the signal isn't strong enough, the WiFi will be turned off.
Infact, here on my desk the signal is on the max, and i havent any problem..
I am getting problems too with wifi after update.
For some reason at home wifi is ok here i only reach internal network ...
Very Strange problem...

I doubt that's the problem. When I look in the Testing menu (using *#*#4636*#*#) and go to Wi-Fi Status it says the RSSI is between -51 and -76 which should definitely be strong enough I suppose.

You're correct
HTC has set the minimum WiFi strength to -88, which is imo too high :-/
That's why people will experience dropped wifi
So what is the solution?

Whoops. i don't know why I pressed the "Thank you"-button xD
For casual users: Nothing, wait until HTC releases a new update.
Chef gtg465x has provided a fix in "ROM Development"-section, but you need to root your phone and use CWM etc. If you're not familiar with these things, you better don't try to fix it.

I suppose that only helps when you have the problem of your phone dropping wifi signal when it is below -88? Then I don't think this will solve my problem, as my signal strength is ~-60 and the wifi connection itself works fine but just doesn't connect to the internet after the update.
EDIT:
My problem has been solved
It appears that my phone does not get the right information about the Default Gateway when using DHCP as it was set to 0.0.0.0. After setting the phone to use a static IP I could change the Default Gateway and solve the problem.
Now the question is, why doesn't my phone get the right Default Gateway from my server after updating the phone to 2.3.3?
iep thats my prob ...
Where can i find the signal strength of wifi in DHD ??
When i'm near my router, activating wifi on phone, it only tells "excellent" but there are no values.
Thanks for your advice

Wow, thats the reason, why i love this forum. Thank you very much. Your answer came blazing fast.
The value tells -57 to -60 (pressing on 'Refresh Stats') sitting directly near the antenna of my router
I can't evaluate, if these values are good or bad.
Would be nice to know, which range is good and which range might result in connection problems.
Thank you

Those are pretty good numbers I believe. I am usually getting between -52 and -70 when sitting in my room, which is about 6m away from my router (and through 2 walls). Apparently, anything lower than -88 is bad with the new 2.3.3 update as the phone loses wifi connection at that value.

Ahh i understand. So lower values are better than higher ones.
I heard, that it depends on the radio. I flashed 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2 used with 2.3.3 (MDJs VivoSense 2.1) and it works very good. (no wifi drops at all).
GPS is fast as well. After some seconds i get about 8-10 satellites.

This is pretty annoying problem, why did HTC changed it when it worked good and making it worse?
try wifi fixer from market.its pretty good.write here pls if u have ay probl.
I've noticed that the Note uses way too much power when I'm using the phone with Wifi-on vs when using it with 3G on, like 2 times more power.
I wonder if it's the wifi chip used in the Note or my wifi router at home (Tp-link 1043ND 300mbs N class router, 11b/g/n auto channel, auto 20/40mhz)
Same with stock rom, cassie's and rocket rom.
B/c of this I've started using the 3G access even at home, but I'd prefer to use wifi.
Anyone can fill in on this matter?
have same router, but I doubt it's cause of it.
With my dell streak I would lose around 3% battery overnight with wifi on, with the gnote I lose around 10%.
Really sucks.
I got this program, wifi TX power, but still din make test to see if can it works on the gnote to reduce wifi antenna battery usage.
some router seem to have problem in battery drain for wifi. 2wire have this problem too . best way is disable wifi when you are not using?
I've noticed something, don't know if it helps though. After connecting to a wifi router, go into settings --> wireless and networking --> wifi settings (the tab where you view the available wifi networks).
On stock 2.3.6 KK5 even if i am connected to a router it keeps scanning continuously for other wifi hotspots (look for the little circle on the right). I found no option to disable auto scanning. I have notify for open networks disabled. I don't see the same effect on my X10.
Any ideas if that causes the drain?
Edit: I've emailed samsung about the above mentioned in this post. Hopefully they will clear this up.
i did the basic checking and didnt find any problems
i got galasxy s5 tmobile 4.4.2 android stock rom rooted
and it supposedly supports 5g wifi but when i use it the wifi just dies out after some time and becomes like dial up speeds.
facebook doesnt even load pictures or update
same thing happends with reglar wifi but after a longer period of time
im suspecting my router but dont know for sure i got a brand new modem router n600 c3700-100nas with 50mbps comcast connection
i already set it to free channel on both 2.4 and 5g wifi also checked all the settings on the router its all normal
ran the speed test on the phone but it keeps using wireless network to run it and gets 84.38mbps tops depending on the day
and when i switch to cellphone network its fast i got 3gb cap so i try to conserve
wifi at home sucks ass and at work i have an older router and its good there.
wifi analyzer shows signal strength between 50-65dbm most of the times
but wifi 5g signal strength is alwayss weaker for some reason
You are right, 5ghz band will always be weaker, the higher the band the shorter the range, so 2.4ghz(standard) will go mjch farther that 5ghz. If this is an issues with both the channels i would for sure check the router for issues, if its only happening on the 5ghz band i'd just stick to 2.4ghz unless you REALLY want to be on 5ghz.

is there any tools to test wifi that can tell me where the problem is?
ive been testing from my desktop and from cellphone best i can but my network skills are just slightly above noob.
i have some free tools on desktop for network troubleshooting but i havent used them yet(just downloaded)
on the phone i couldnt find many
im looking for some monitoring tools maybe ones that show graphs or something to show me whats goin on during the slow down times and what might be causing it.
if i remember correctly its not the wifi signal because that stays good all the time
