Hero updates on twitter

Okay so I see people on here are getting into twitter. So don't know if someone wants to create a new twitter profile who can update news on the hero. I for one would be a follower. Oh and if your not into twitter try it out it's the new facebook.
so no one wants to do this? (sorry for the bump)
How about you doing it?
True but I don't have the time and I also don’t know enough tech stuff. I was thinking that a few trusted peeps could have the password and then it would be so demanding on one person.
Anyway I have set up two accounts one for general stuff and one for the hero. Have a look. Don’t forget to follow as when the updates start coming you will miss out.
Also don’t worry if you don’t have a twitter account you can still view the micro blog via these links
General info: www.twitter.com/xda_developers
Hero info www.twitter.com/xda_dev_hero
BTW sorry about the logo's
I for one would be up for helping update the xda_dev_hero account. Recieved my white Hero on Thursday, and having been a G1 user before I feel pretty familiar with the OS at this point. Wouldn't want to be solely responsible for it, but if others think it would be useful we could certainly get something going...
Good good anyone else up for it?
Ive been doing small updates on Twitter from the hero. I have also been posting pics on Twitter from my other phone. I may post a YouTube soon. Anyway, its richrasp on Twitter if anyone why's to follow.
I have made the code to keep the Twitter automatically up-to-date reading xda-rss and posting the info to twitter. The idea can be adapted to forum threats if needed. If anyone have a threat and want to follow it (like general, dev&hack.. ), just let me know to work on it.
-Thanks to robboy for the password-

Hero/Android Project Website Reviews

I'm looking for some of you to review my work so far on my Hero/Android Phone website, located in my signature. I've been working hard to try to release at least one new article a day, whatever floats my boat for that day.
I am also looking for people to help add new stuff to the site, whether it be for the Sprint Hero, an Android app that you love, or have developed, or whatever you'd like, really, as long as it pertains to Android.
This is a not-for-profit website aimed at trying to get the viewers to start looking at all the stuff their Android phone can do, rooted or not.
Hey, I always like to see people start things, that's the hardest step, actually starting.
I'll tell you what I think of it from my perspective, not new to android, new-ish..but already dabbled in rooting and flashing roms, etc.
I'll try to be honest but just because I'd appreciate the honesty if I were in your shoes.
I'll talk about design first.
I think that the first thing that strikes me when I first see your site is the logo.
I know you just opened but that should be top priority, it is your defining icon.
Take a look at BGR or engadget, those logos are known.
Make your logo..more "catchy" (?) It seems a bit amateurish, whether you are or not is not the point.
Second, the text "Android Apps and Modifications" jumps out, it does not follow the rest of the layout in font choice and is partially hidden by the "Subscribe to us" banner.
Having mentioned both logo and subscription parts of the site, immediately adjacent to the right of those, there's alot of empty space that screams of "under construction", maybe integrate them into each other?
Just opened ie, noticed it's ad space.
I'd do away with gif animation ads, makes the site look cheap. But I have never had a site with ads or sought to advertise so...I don't know if you get a selection of ads or how it works. Either way, I'd integrate the main title/logo bar and the subscription bar and find a better way to integrate the ads.
I also thought it was "not-for-profit."
As for the rest of the layout, I like it. It is classy, modern.
One thing to mention, I would rather have the posts below the top post to have more than just the excerpt. At least a small thumbnail. Text is boring and a picture can say a thousand words as well as give the chance to tease readers, excite, etc.
Make content the center/masterpiece.
As for the content, I like it. It's useful and interesting. Disassembly, ROM Releases, tutorials, awesome. Have you considered having featured weekly articles? App of the Week, ROM of the week, Tip of the week? These could go along beside your regular posts. These could turn out to be sought out sections of your site.
Another thing, I speak for myself, I'm a bit of a neat freak when it comes to having information in front of me. That is why I love forums haha.
I noticed you have a bajillion tags. Maybe cut them down into less, more encompassing, tags?
Sorry if I was too honest, I do not know how long you've had the site up. I think you have a great idea, you should run with it.
The only sites I take care of run on wordpress and thank God for layouts and php tuts.

Different browsers render things different ways, so include your browser and version number to help him out.
Good point, thanks.
I was on chrome 5 on windows 7.
Also had adblock enabled which explains how I noticed the ad in internet explore.

I agree with what overthinkingme said about putting the subscription login next to the logo. However I think the logo is a great starting point. I like the color scheming but don't like the blog style layout (It's probably just me as I don't like blogs in general). If it's design is supposed to be a blog, then I don't have any suggestions on changes except cutting down the ads (If possible, maybe Google's text ads?). If you're looking to be more organized (sorry if this sounds harsh, I don't mean for it to) I'd go with a different layout. That's just my .02 so take it with a grain of salt. BTW I'm on a Mac with Safari 5.0. The site looks good and I've added it to my favorites (Actually I added it yesterday. Saw it in your signature and had to check it out.)

Google App Inventor

Have you ever dreamed of creating your own Android application, but you have no coding skills whatsoever? Google’s App Inventor for Android is a new software development tool that is designed to bring app design to the masses.
LINK:
http://androidandme.com/2010/07/news/app-inventor-brings-wysiwyg-editor-to-android/
So what do you guys think?
After the release, a lot more junk apps will flood the market. But, people with good ideas and full determination and no coding knowledge will use this, and some good apps will come out of it. Maybe the market will need a section for apps made by this program.
But I guess this is a progressive move by the android team, because development for android will increase furshur.
I personally think that's its a great idea, but there has to be some way to filter the apps
for example we could make as many apps as we want for ourself and to share with friends....but it would have to be approved by google it's put on the market
Is this only for apps, or will it also do other things like Live Wallpapers?
Already signed up for beta release!! Cant wait to do some non coding, super inventing, app creations. This will create a lot of junk in the market tho, I agree that there should be a "Invented App" section or something similar. Everyone is gonna try and make a couple extra bucks too...we'll see what happens.

Filtering, searching and reviewing is the way to go, not categorizing. Even without App Inventor anyone could create some ****ty apps. And Market requires you to pay 25$ fee if you want to distribute your apps, so I think people won't flood Market too much.
waiting for test but it seems great also hopping to see something similar for coding
I don't think any more junk in the market would be possible.
If you told me last year that I would be sick of seeing half naked Japanese chicks I would have slapped you.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. I am a bit pissed because I have recently been going through the process of learning to create an android app and am nearly ready to publish my first app. I spent quite a while reading the Dev Guide and googling any issues that came up. Now, no one has to do that, just use this WYSIWYG. And, there are for sure going to be a flood of crappy apps to complement what's already out there; there's no doubt in my mind. The $25 Developer fee is not going to deter that many people.
On the flip side, I am sure that there are some people out there who do not have any coding experience who are extremely creative and will come out with something cool.
I think its a great idea.
I can't wait for a "$25 Dev" to make something that professional devs couldn't do properly.
I think this is a progressive idea!
But hope the market stays as clean as possible with QA Apps!
Maybe someone will come up with a cool app with this...
THERE ARE GOING TO BE SO MANY SOUNDBOARDS ON THE MARKET NOW.
From what I've read, the apps made with this won't be available in the market... at least for now.
Has anyone gotten an invite yet? I really want to try this out.
New app
First app I wanna post on the market will be an app to filter out apps from one/several certain developer(s). Sites like sowallpaper.com or PrettyDrawer and that soundboard crap and skins for Home replacements are flooding Android Market and it is so annoying to go through 5-8 of these (cr)apps for every new "real" piece of software. See if you can beat me to it ;=)
Oh, that's just dandy. Now we're gonna have apple-style crap-apps
I think it's a GREAT idea! The only programming language I'm really skilled in is Pascal / Delphi. I've got so many ideas for a simple app here and there, but no skills to develop it. The installation of the IDE + SDK + additional files is already a pain in the ass.. something more simpler is just welcome
Maybe, I'll even release one of the games I developed some years ago on Turbo Pascal
Hm, signed up for this today.
Anyone gotten access yet?
This looks really cool and easy to use.
How would this work when there are force closes? The developer will have no idea how to fix the problem...
dont force closes only appear when something isnt programmed correctly?
i would assume this would not create any force closes because your not working with code.
and it probebly has a system built in to see if what you are doing works before you can make it public?
i really want to use this because i cant develop.
i just hope its not limited to simple things like soundboards and silly games.
i had a few ideas i would like to try that might be usefull..
hope they release it soon and we can try it before having to pay the developers fee.

!!!green colored!!!

RANT ON:
While happily chugging along on some of the stuff that I hope to release to you all, I've made a very disturbing discovery, which makes me feel almost like the Big Man turning green. Angry. Pissed. Greatly disappointed!
First some background.
Everyone worth their 'droid knows about the Cease & Desist letter sent to Cyanogen.
Many of us know the same happened to Conflipper from Shipped ROMs.
Rumor has it the same happened to samsung-firmwares.com
Yet it appears there are still people around who like poking at the beehive (yes, killer bees!) that is the phone industry and their armies of lawyers. Things that are GUARANTEED to piss them off BigTime.
I'm not going to drop list of names here, I hope their conscience will speak to them on a quiet night or something.
The morale?
STOP CHARGING MONEY FOR THINGS THAT AREN'T YOURS TO SELL!
HELP PEOPLE GET WHAT THEY CAN ALREADY GET FOR FREE!
Besides being against the rules of most mod/tweak/hack forums out there, charging for someone else's stuff is probably the biggest reason for lawyers to go after websites hosting 'official', 'unofficial', 'leaked' etc. ROMs: lawyers merely have to google for "premium membership", "costs", "donations" etcetera.
Please people, stop doing this, or there will be a time when Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia and whoever else will simply pull the plug on online firmware updates and start telling people to take their phones to the shop for updating, eFuse and all. Needless to say, the vibe of the modding community will suffer with it.
I was the first (as far as I can tell) to post about Kies test mode, I'm willing to put time and effort in making a tool to allow people to update to and backup ANY firmware using just Kies (no need even for a registry hack), maybe even use Kies update module on non-Windows OSes (well, those that support Wine), help with developing Heimdall, fixing the FM radio, etcetera. Please allow others and me to go on doing this.
So:
- Don't steal others' work only to lock it up and start charging money for using it.
- Be honest and open about your discoveries.
- Be respectful of the services you use, don't hammer them needlessly.
...and the list goes on.
RANT OFF
What's this all about? No need to pay for firmware update requests, use Kies and one or two simple, free tools (coming soon) to get them. Less noise in the forums about the inner workings, which could attract angry lawyers from far away.
That's all.
Well said mista, lets hope some take note.
i mean really?
I thought samsung-firmwares.com got a cease and desist because of having Samsung in the name and make people assume they own and are responsible for the site...thats why Samsung-firmwares made a new site with a different name..
Hmm, why mention Cyanogen's cease and desist letter in a post that has nothing to do with him whatsoever? It's not like Cyanogen was asking money for anything and the reason behind his C&D was entirely different.
As for Samsung-firmwares.com, they had it coming and got what they deserved (and obviously didn't get it at all, looking at their current activities...)

True, he wasn't asking money. I added him to show that lawyers can be set off barking at anyone involved in hosting OR selling someone elses intellectual property. I should have been more clear about that.
As much as I think that IP is just imaginary property, I cherish the modding community and their great work too much. I'd hate to see the same happening to us.
Hah! Just seen the new Samsung firmwares temporary page. This is just priceless. For those who don't understand Czech, they say there that everyone from Czech republic is blocked from the site and can't even register for their "premium services", because, apparently, "Czech people were spreading our firmwares illegally".
Edit: Sorry. As it was just explained to me by the owner of Samsung firmwares, the site on that URL has nothing to do with them anymore and apparently is someone's idea of a great joke...

List sites that you frequent that revert to mobile versions

Title says it all. If we have a list of sites, some people here can contact them and hopefully get it resolved sooner rather than later. Take a proactive approach I always say... well not all the time, but you know what I mean.
Post the sites in a list format, and I will update this post with the URLs, then I will also post who contacted them. If a site is fixed, post here also so we can show resolution to this issue.
Also, if someone contacts some sites, and posts that they did so, show them some thanks. This needs to be a group effort
If enough people contact these sites, then they will add the user agent string to their site.
if you're not currently tracking the issue that I'm talking about: In Honeycomb, the browser's default user agent string is "Android"; in previous versions of the OS, it's "Android Mobile." This is meant to serve as a way for Web sites to differentiate between large-screen and small-screen Android devices and then respond appropriately. Thus far, however, most Web developers haven't implemented support for the two strings, which is why both are currently being treated the same.
Gizmodo.
But frankly considering their recent makeover is so goddam terrible, I'm 'ok' with only getting the mobile

HAHA agreed! the makeover SUCKS!!! And i love how the first post with the redone site said "Here is why our new site IS better" or something to that affect... anyhow all it does is let them advertise more effectively. the setup is terrible, so i too am happy to get the mobile version! no site should be that difficult to navigate or even just read!
Also i read that if you type "about:debug" in the browser it will give many more settings one of which is for desktop browsing. did it on my captivate running serendipity and got lots of new setting but no desktop browsing, but then the xoom is a tablet running honeycomb...
sorry for double post...

well this is known, but what I'm trying to do is have everyone get ahold of these sites so we can get the proper version up... Sans gizmodo for obvious reasons.
Please list some sites so everyone can help, that's what this thread is for.
How's going to tell Google to update their sites (like Google Reader)?? A shame they are not recognizing honeycombs correctly.
