extreme battery problems - Epic 4G General

So I have been having some battery life issues like some users not being able to get a full day. But there has been a few times I have had my battery at %50 and then after a reboot it starts up and says plug in charger your battery is dead. Today I had 90% only been using for a few hours. All I did today was remove handcent and put on go sms. I also installed juice defender but I have it just on default settings. Go sms was stuck in a search so I rebooted my phone. I had 90% battery and when i started back up it says my battery needs to be charged. I have done the whole charge / whipe battery thing before didnt seem to help.
Oh and i'm running dk28 mightnight rom.

sounds like a bad battery. Most sprint stores with service centers have a cadex machine that they can test your battery with.

I have been seeing the exact same thing. I will reboot the phone with what appears to be a lot of battery life left and when it comes back I'll get told I'm at something like 10% and I should connect the charger. Luckily I have two batteries and I keep the second one with me in the pocket case/charger.

Same issue here with drastic change in charge level after flashing a ROM or even just flashing a new app or UI change via CWM when using my cheap ass Chinese eBay batteries. I've yet to be able to recreate the problem while using my stock battery - and I've tried. If you are using the stock battery, it's probably going bad. If you're using a cheap eBay battery, well, you get what you pay for I guess.

Both of my batteries are stock and I don't think it's a bad battery. I can go several days with great battery life from both batteries and then out of the blue I'll restart the phone for whatever reason and POW! Come to think of it the only reason why I usually restart the phone is to either swap batteries or because performance has dropped dramatically. Now I am wondering if there is a run away process that is chewing up the battery but the usage isn't being reported until after the reboot.

My battery is stock also. And mine appears to be random also sometimes I will have mild to high battery drain and other times its BAM %50 to 0 on a reboot or something it doesn't really match up with use or anything. I do have a Chinese battery on the way. I'm draining the battery down a bit more now and going to do another full charge with it off and then wipe the stats. Hopefully it helps will also try to stop at the sprint store and have them test the battery.

This was most prevalent for me when running EXT4 using the ext4 compatible bonsai roms (and the other ROMs that use bonsai as a base)
i've gone back to RFS and the 1.0.4 (I think) bonsai ROM and the problem has gone away.
my phone would be fine for quite a while, then i'd notice crappy performance, browsing, texts not being sent/received so i'd reboot the phone and come back after boot and the battery would be almost dead.

I am on ext4 also. I have been thinking of going to another rom and possibly off ext4 but I was trying to wait for final froyo custom roms..ya I know stupid me lol

I'm ruining running "stock" DK28 so I don't think it is an EXT4 issue as much as maybe an issue with DK28.

Looks like it goes away
I am currently on Bonsai v2.0.0 rom with Gingerbread Theme.
My battery performed weird when I just flashed to Bonsai rom. After reboot, the battery suddenly dropped from 50% to 15% and told me to charge. However I believe it happened due to flashing a new rom and battery not calibrated.
However, after a week of normal using, the battery seemed to have been calibrated itself. Now it performs okay. I have been lightly used (facebook, XDA, Engadget, weather checking on Wifi) with screen brightness set to auto. I also played music on phone speaker for about 20 minutes while I am cooking. Oh, I didn't get a call, so no call usage. But I did some email checking.
I had Advanced Task Killer set up to auto kill processes every one hour. I killed facebook when not in use, as I heard that facebook chat causes major battery drainage. And I also set mostly black wallpaper in hope to save some battery. I heard that saves battery a lot for some reason.
Anyways I have attached the screenshot, although I didn't use much, I believe that I can withstand a day with no problem.

Not to change the subject but you brought up Swype. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the more they use Swype the worse it seems to get? I loved it at first but now it seems like it's been hitting the crack pipe.

With due respect I think you're all wrong. I've had the same issues... sometimes at random after a restart
Shut down
Pull the battery
Put it back in
You should see your normal battery life
It's actually reading way lower than the battery actually is

Swype remembers mistakes that we make when hitting each key.. once a week or once every couple weeks I'll go to menu > settings > spplications > manage > select all apps > swype > force stop then clear cache.
that always gets it sober again.

The thing is, it shouldn't be happening. I can say for certain that after removing EXT4 and flashing back to the last stable (for me) Bonsai ROM I have not encountered this anomaly even one time (been 2 wks so far)... call it a coincidence, call it a solution. You decide.
Just sayin'

Clear cache or clear data? In Cache it shows 0.00B but in Data it shows 396KB. EDIT: I took the plunge and cleared data. That was it.

I tried this and no luck. I restarted the phone with about 80% and when it came up I got the critically low attach charger message. I then powered down, removed the battery, let it set for a minute, put the battery back in and booted. Still the same message. I'm keeping better track of usage and such today to see if there is something I can contribute this to.

In my experience, there wasn't a 'guilty' usage pattern or app that caused this for me.. I noticed that when the battery gauge showed around 60-70% my phone would start performing very poorly.. I'd reboot and when it booted, came back w/ critical low battery.
As I posted before, I reverted back to RFS and haven't had this issue yet.

Glad to see I'm not the only one having this annoying problem. I hate having a full battery and after 2 reboots I have a low battery. Its hard to believe that a reboot takes so much power.

3rd party launcher
So I was having a problem over the last few days trying to see what was eating up my memory and battery.
This was my solution to my battery drain:
If you have a 3rd party launcher, like LauncherPro, go turn on TouchWiz (via settings->applications->manage applications->3rd party launcher->clear defaults). Open up both TouchWiz and the Default Android launcher one at a time, and make sure you delete all of the widgets and anything that might be operating under the other launchers.
LauncherPro and ADW do not turn off TouchWiz, they are really just an overlay. So if you have, for instance, the Sprint TV widget on a home screen through TW, then it is still operating while you use LP or ADW. I use this example because it is a widget that Sprint has set up to automatically be placed on the home screen when you buy the phone.
Also, I would recommend looking at these three apps that might show you what is draining your battery: OS Monitor, Android Assistant, and/or Battery Doctor.
Hope this help you in some fashion to uncover whatever it is that draining your battery. If nothing here helps, I would do one of the battery calibration techniques here

I hate Froyo!

Thought the title would get your attention.
After upgrading to Froyo, I have many issues, two of which I'll cover here in hope that someone can resolve them.
First issue is battery life. Absolutely horrible after upgrading. Thought it would be the opposite. Can someone please provide some resolution to this issue? I've disabled a number of things said to resolve this problem but none have worked.
The second issue is the accelerometer after upgrading. Most screens end up in landscape view and switching back to portrait is difficult. I have tried to calibrate it but that didn't work. Don't like the huge delay or failed attempt to switch between both on this version. Calibration does not work.
Any help is appreciated...

Why would I want to uncheck that option? I want it to auto rotate but want it to happen quicker than it has after upgrading.
battery..
In addition, the battery is obviously not the problem here. This started after upgrading to Froyo.
Were you using a custom ROM with 2.1?
Are you using a custom ROM with 2.2?
As far as I know, the stock ROM with 2.1 didn't have great battery life either (thought I'm not sure, I rooted my phone the day I got it ). So if you're using a stock ROM with 2.2, you could have the same issue.
Also, if you are rooted, try using SetCPU. Even with the default kernel you can use it to underclock your phone when the screen's off and save a lot of battery.

are you running a task killer? try removing it. Have you tried any of the MANY battery life tricks? Try flashing the update.zip, could have been a messy install. you also could be suffering from useritis.

Thanks for the reply. No, phone has not been rooted. I simply waited for the 2.2 upgrade and can confirm both issues are a result of upgrading. You are right...the stock ROM did not have good battery life. However, after upgrading, it is much worse in comparison.
The g-sensor issue is also a huge problem. With that said, I'm looking for a fix to these two issues.
Thanks,
task killer..
tonyh703,
Yes, I'm running Advanced Task Killer which did not have a problem before. Is this an app that can cause this problem? I'll remove it if so...
You really need to do a little detective work to find out why your battery is not lasting. My battery is actually lasting noticeably longer on froyo. I was using Fresh 1.0.1 before with Netarchy's kernel and would just barely make it through the day of moderate use. Now that I have updated to Fresh 3.1.0.1, I am easily making it through the day with about the same use. Yesterday, I went 14 hours and still had 26% left when I plugged it in for the night. My usage was about 2 hours streaming last.fm, about a half hour of phone calls, about 1 1/2 hours of internet and twitter, about 45 minutes watching video's, and an hour and a half of reading with my kindle ap. To me that is pretty darn good. I have gps on, twitter syncing every half hour, and google sync on, most of my other stuff like email and such is set to manually sync. The only thing I did notice is that the first day after going to Froyo, my battery went down pretty quick, but after a day or two it settled down to the way it is now on it's own. Today I have had about the same use as yesterday so far, and have been off of the charger for 11 hours and have 76% remaining.
As to your other problem, can't say, mine is working fine.
If youve got an led flashlight type of app installed uninstall it they conflict with the HTC LED flashlight. That seems to be the most common problem with people upgrading to Froyo.
Agree on your second point. I wish there was a way to at least lock the screen to an orientation when need. The delay though is ridiculous.
I have also noticed that the delay to type sometimes is severely long causing me to retype the words a second time before they appear in the screen.

FWIW - I found a little trick on a forum somewhere that allegedly came from HTC techs...
It goes like this - first, charge your phone as normal (phone on, 8 hours)
Then, after 8 hours and the phone reporting fully charged status, take the phone off the charger for about 3 minutes (just enough to slightly discharge it) and then turn it off (power down) and put it back on the charger for an hour or so.
Then, take it off the charger and turn it back on.
That's it! It sounds a bit ridiculous, but I think the cited reason was that whenever you install a new ROM, the "system" needs to understand when the battery is truly full and this trick helps to recalibrate and ensure that it is.
I really don't have any way (nor the desire) to verify the science behind this, but I did it myself after the horrible battery life I got with FroYo.
About a week out now and my battery is behaving completely normally, and possibly better than with 2.1, though only marginally if that...
Give it a shot - if it works, there you go, if not... Well it's not like you've lost anything.
Good luck, though YMMV.

have any of yall had a long delay when putting in a name for the reciver in sms? I kid you not it takes almost 3 to 5 sec for it to pull up a name and phone number from my phone book.
Its sad that you need to do "tricks" to get decent battery life, because most people expect it out of the box. Yes you can apply a custom rom with a undervolted cpu, but that shouldnt be necessary. I personally love doing all that stuff, but the majority of people are completely ignorant to these methods and might return their phones because of battery life, but for you people on here...BAKEDSNACK 1.2.5 with the latest of his kernel..amazing battery life.
Get rid of that task killer!! Froyo does not need it... Not to mention none of the task killers support Froyo correctly. Uninstall it, try using Froyo without it.
I recommend getting rid of the task killer and go without system panel lite. It works with froyo without any problems. I also recommend letting your battery completely die out before charging it again.
My Evo worked without any issues after the update to froyo. Also, if you are a widget fanatic, I recommend limiting the amount yo u use . The reason being that everytime you unlock your phone and scroll from one page to through next, you are loading said widgets into memory which help to eating up the battery quicker.
Also if you have a lot of things updating in the background, that can kill your battery quicker. I'm always on my phone and get anywhere from ten to fourteen hours of use. I also use a cpu manager to extend the life of my battery when not in use.

DO NOT DEPLETE YOUR BATTERY COMPLETELY!! These are Li-ion batteries. Depleting the battery too much can damage the cells. Discharging the batteries 100% before charging to avoid memory effect is a phenomena unique to Ni-Cad batteries. If a Li-ion is discharged too severely, it causes an irreversible reaction inside the cell that prevents the battery from holding any charge at all. This common in laptop batteries.
To the OPs issue, do you have the latest Facebook update (1.3.1)? Version 1.3.0 had an issue that was keeping the phone awake eating up battery life.

Warning to those with battery drain on freex10

I was getting really fantastic battery life until today when I installed dolphin hd. I'm not sure why, but the moment I installed that, my battery could literally be watched dropping, even when it wasn't open. Once I got rid of it, my battery life then went right back to being great as it was before. The odd thing is, under battery usage, it wasn't showing up when it wasn't running, yet as it was the only change I made, and the sole factor in the change in battery life, I'm positive that's what it was. I'm curious how many people experiencing bad battery drain are using this browser.

I have all these and my battery life is fine, I don't think you get what I said at all. I think dolphin could be the cause of so many people having battery troubles, as once I installed it I started experiencing the same things they said, and then once I uninstalled it the problem was gone. I am back to about 1% an hour drop hen in standby, however with the dolphin installed (even when it wasn't running and I wasn't connected to wifi or 3g) I was dropping about 5-10% just in standby per hour.
Hmm.... might remove it and see if I can see a difference.. but my battery life isn't even horrible. A little worse than before maybe. But I'm getting a solid 10 hours at least.

freex10 severe Battery drain with latest X10i official SE update.
Running Beta 4 after factory SE updated yesterday on my X10i. I have severe battery drain. 89% after loading the freex10 beta4 with apps zip install and a TI restore of all my prior progs. Left the phone plugged in and charging overnight and this morning it was 4%. I am not using any special browsers. I am using Advanced Task Killer and killed all the programs before leaving the phone. Any ideas??
I really wish there was a way to dual boot with xrecovery.. that way we could use stock SE during the day because it has better battery life, and when we are near a charger we can use 2.2
I had the battery drain problem where I was losing 5 - 10% per hour after upgrading to beta 4. While I cannot prove it I think the drain is related to the baseband upgrade and how it interacts with 3g on AT&T. I can't turn off data as this is my work e-mail device. After some experimentation I found that switching to 2g "fixed" the problem. I took my phone off the charger 4 hours ago and with moderate e-mail use, 1 30 minute phone call and some XDA and web browsing I am at 91%. I added the 2g/3g to the power control widget and can quickly switch to 3g when I want/need the additional speed.
One other unintended benefit I found from 2G. For some reason my phone will not drop in certain areas where I drop calls every time I am on 3g.
Possibly due to wifi?
Ok guys so I re-did the OE factory SE update and re-did the xrecovery to redo freex10 beta4. all went well but I was to sleepy to setup the wifi. This morning my phone was fully charged and ready to go. I came into work and turned the wifi on to use on our network. Phones been on standby and wifi is set to be off with the display. Its only been 3 hours and my phone is at 10%. Why is wifi drawing so much power even when not in use?
So far I saw many causes in 2.2, check my list here
> Dolphin HD (from this OP? - unconfirmed)
> Stock Email get partial wakelock with exchange server.
> Dialer - partial wakelock (you might not feel it, but it is, compared to 2.1)
> Dialer - drainage when turn 'turn to silence' on (Call setting)
For Dolphin, well as I trusted in android system, I believe there might be something else 'between' dolphin and the battery, I don't think it's the dolphin itself. Since it doesn't report anywhere between spareparts or battery usage, or even CPU usage. I must admit that 2.1 is doing better in term of 'system stability' (not about hanging, crashing - but to handle when something go wrong)
I also must admit that using ATK in 2.2 is likely cause trouble, I used to have battery trouble and there was no way out before I turned to ATK. well, thing got 'weird' (it was not worse) If you feel something wrong, 3G trouble, some stupid force close, try disable ATK.
I never used ATK in the fresh install. Posibly the stock E-mail however I haven't set that up either. Its a shame as the rom is real good and appears stable other than the battery drain issue. I've already tried the Xrecovery wipe of battery stats, cache, etc with no luck. I may just stick with the factory SE rom till freex10 is no longer a beta..

it's been driving me crazy wondering why my batter drains so fast
Worth a shot for sure! I get 24 hours easily with heavy usage... It's a lot better for me than beta 3 was

I'm using beta 3 with constant 3g and dolphin hd. No problems. Batt drain is as usual with 2.1 original. I get about 1-1.5 days of usage, sometimes even 2.

I solved my battery drain problem

I was having a problem with fast battery drain on my SGS2. I would get 15 hours if lucky from a full charge with light - moderate use. My most recent charge looks like it has doubled the time.
What did I change? I did a factory reset and manually installed all my apps, NOT using titanium backup. I had used titanium backup to restore apps only, that were from my previous phone (Nexus1). I have never used titanium backup for system settings, only apps, but it seems even that is unreliable. I've now stopped using titanium backup completely.

Can anyone verify this...
Will it matter if it's i9100 to i9100, or just any other phone to i9100?
Well... Ive done several hard resets , because I though I had a network problem , and I many of those I didnt install titanium or even root the device and the battery life was the same.
Just one opinion..

If you notice a higher battery drainage than normal then you have to see what application you've installed lately. If you can't find it then the only option is to do a Hard Reset. That has worked for me, IF your battery is drained by some app which you've installed lately.
Regards.
I am sure battery drain has to do with the apps we installed and the settings we use.
We are in a fortunate situation that my wife and I have both S II, hers is 2 days older from the same shop, so I assume both devices are from the same batch. Hence no hardware difference.
I installed a lot app and played with lots of settings and if my wife like it, she "demand" to install it on hers too, so hers is a more controlled env.
For some reason my battery drains a lot quicker than hers. I still have to find out which application / settings cause this.
For an experiment, we did not use both phones for a full day (very difficult), so all the drain is due to background processes.
There are several dips in the graph, but those are explicitly usage of the phone for a while. The big last drop on her battery was because she was playing a game for more than 3 hrs.
PS.
A collegue of mine (also an SII) had his battery run out quickly, until he found out his culprit: Settings->Location and security->Use wireless network was ON.
You can see the effect of this as the "almost horizontal bar" in my wife's battery when we turned it off.
thx for info man.
What would happen if i turn that off? I want to try this to preserve my batt life. Thanks!

I have used TV to restore many times and battery life is fine. I'm would suggest that the issue is some app you are restoring rather than TB

I wonder if having 3rd party launchers like launcher pro drains the battery quicker. I installed launcher pro without ever having really tested the battery life of the phone with the standard launcher. Has anyone here tested the difference, if any, of the battery life of standard v market app launchers?

The screen shot on the left is your phone correct? It looks like something is waking your phone up and leaving it in an awake state for far too long. Your graph represents over a day's time and I see those huge chunks of time where your screen is off but your phone is awake; I'd say some program is what do they call it *wakelock* every now and then.

By the looks of it, the screen was on the entire time (which seems impossible?).

If you notice a higher battery drainage than normal then you have to see what application you've installed lately. If you can't find it then the only option is to do a Hard Reset. That has worked for me, IF your battery is drained by some app which you've installed lately.

it's not just the apps that was just installed. It should include apps that are updated. I had this issue on SGS I when beautiful widget was having issues with updates causing the phone to use more battery power than usual
Morel likely to be a bad app, or a bad app setting causing the app not to close properly then drain power than the mere fact you restored it via titanium.
anyone one trying while sleeping, off your packet data ?
for me i tested,
2350 @100% to 0700 @ 99% (during packet data off)
If on, it will left 70% ++ in the next morning..
why is that so?
This is my battery drain using Litening ROM 1.5
I usually make and receive 30min phone call a day, push email on 2 accounts, wi-fi at work, data always on.

Turning off data packet doesn't allow any application going on line (unless you have your wifi on) and cannot download e-mails, synchronize anything, etc..
This saves your battery a lot.

Yes, that is also what I suspect. It is just to find out what which application / settings this cause.
I found out that I have 4 apps has an "sync" account, I delete all of them (except gmail), now I got a lot better performance (1 day: still 75%).
I'll post later my picture

Of course the updates are included. There should be an app/good optimized app which will allow us to close the apps and thus Auto Sync and Background Data to off when we are not using them, especially at bed time. The in built task manager's RAM Clearance function is crap and frankly I haven't found an app which will optimize the RAM without force losing the apps/widgets. Tried 'Gemini App' but I doubt! This 'Sync' stuff is the main responsible part of high battery drain.

Exhausted every effort trying to fix this problem.. ATRIX 4G: new battery time?

I'll post everything I've tried and everything that's gone wrong here.
So initially I purchased this phone off of a friend nearly brand new, the screen had broken and had been replaced. Otherwise the phone is in perfect factory condition.
I unlocked the phone, and am using it on Rogers. APN settings working perfectly.
I installed GOLauncherEX on the phone as Motoblur wasn't doing it for me.
Battery life was crap (lasting hardly 3 hours and dying while I sleep). I found that Motoblur HOME had been running alongside GOLauncherEX. At first I simply uninstalled the third-party launcher, but then opted to grab LauncherPro+ and HomeSwitcher. This dramatically improved battery life.
Lately, I've been having issues once in awhile again. Mostly if I leave the phone unplugged while I'm sleeping (fully charged when unplugged) and we'll use the timeline 3am - 11am. It would either die completely or drop to around 15%.
As long as I could have enough charge to last me through work, I was fine with this as it was way better than what had been happening before.
This morning something extreme and unexplainable happened.. and it's the first time I took a look at the battery usage meter to see what had happened. Picture is below.
If someone could offer some tips or help that would benefit me even the slightest, it would be very much appreciated.
My bad for sneaking a link in, but it was the only way to show the issue.

Calibrating is something you may need to do after flashing a ROM, you can search and find a guide or you can use this app.
I have not flashed any new roms and I don't intend on doing so, but I'll check out the app you posted.
Thanks for your help,
any new ideas are still welcome.
The benefits of battery calibration are not limited to only if you flash a new ROM. Battery calibration should be the first thing you try if you are experiencing battery troubles imo, and there is allot more in depth information in the guides you could search for.
There is one more thing I can think of you can try, download Watchdog and see if there are any malicious or poorly written apps burning up your cpu/battery.

Maybe unlock the bootloader and flash a custom rom?
Go into account and sync and shut off background data. I was getting. 10-12 hours battery life and now over 30 by just doing that. Worked for a buddy at work too.

Radio is key. After I flashed radio 1.77.30p, my phone can easily using 3 days without freeze anything.
Do not use 1.97 radio and don't use task killers. 2.3.4 gingerbread does a much better job of killing tasks than Froyo did and it's unnecessary. Also, turning off background data is not necessary.

I would say it is. Apps including google will try and update and locate your phone via 3g and gps when its sitting there idle. Its not necessary if you only install apps that dont use background data, or disable them individually but some dont allow it.
I still was able to get 15 hours with data enabled and over 30 with it disabled. There is a huge difference there. I just have to open my yahoo now to update it which I dont mind.
While I appreciate everyone's replies and help, has anyone actually looked at the picture I posted?
As much as I am most definitely interested in prolonging my battery life, that picture is showing a sudden drop from 70% to completely dead, idling, screen off, while I'm asleep.

I would purchase a new battery from Motorola, It looks like your battery has one or more bad cells in it. Only thing that really explains it. Even with everything turned ON as far as data - the battery should not drop that far that fast.
i'm not entirely sure whats going on with the charge level dropping so sharply. Either something is draining your battery big time or the readout when it says 100% is incorrect.
I had issues with the battery up time as well. In my case, the battery wouldnt last more than 8-9 hours. I had to charge it two times a day. Once overnight so its 100% when i go to work and again as soon as i get home. If i charged to 100%, unplugged and went to bed, it would be at 15-20% when i woke up.
The last time i went abroad, i left the radio turned off completely. I noticed that the battery held its charge for about a day and a half.
Now i did root, unlock the BL and install CM7 on my phone. It seemed better but not that much. After i setup the phone to NOT use my 3G data connection while my wifi was on, i noticed that i was getting great battery life when i was at home but still rubbish at work.
I'm doing a test right now to see if this makes a difference or not. I have turned off data on my phone all together this morning. I charged it to 100%. Normally after 6 hours at work, my phone is at about 30-35%
Right now its sitting at 75%
the 3g is whats killing the battery, on my phone anyway. I will see how long the battery lasts without turning on my data at all. Then i will compare that with how its like with background data turned off.
I would suggest you try re-calibrating your phone's battery, i use battery calibration from the market. Then either turn data off altogether like i have or just turn background data off as the others have suggested and see what kind of a difference it makes.
While i realize you dont want to, it may help further to have a ROM like CM7 installed as it wont have all the bloatware that can further reduce the performance of your phone. You should definitely give turning the data off a go to see its the culprit before you go spend money on a new battery which may or may not fix the problem.
Best to isolate the root cause before you spend money on fixing it. If turning off the data doesnt do it, then you very well may have a battery problem.

I'll definitely try everything you've mentioned, I did calibrate my battery since I first started this topic. I'm not sure if there's a difference, if there is, it isn't noticeable. My phone died last night, and I charged it overnight again so I haven't had a chance to see if what happened the other night will happen again. Soon enough, I'll post details if I notice anything peculiar.
Since you said you bought the phone off a friend I would like to make sure you have the right battery.
The battery "must" be of the following to show the right charge level, otherwise it might appear the battery discharging very quickly.
The part/model no.: SNN5893A
Manufacturing Date: ??/April/2011 or onwards
In regards to the poster above who mentioned shutting off background data, my phone lasts 17-19 hours running CM7 with nothing frozen, background data on, and I record quite a bit of video + pictures every day. I don't use task killers either. So I'm thinking that maybe the background data thing is either actually covering up a radio problem, a carrier issue, previous ROM information leaking through, or a faulty battery as stated above that could possibly need replaced.

Ridiculous ICS Battery Life

On Friday 1 June 2012, which is Friday last week at the time of writing, I gladly updated my phone through Kies after receiving word of the UK update being available from these very forums. Over the past week, I have noticed that my battery life is considerably worse since my upgrade to the new Android version and, when hearing of people hear who manage up to 36 hours of battery life through this phone, I really want to find out what they are doing exactly. At present, I have set the brightness at 1% (the minimum) and only up it to 40% when out in bright light conditions. At home, I also use the Screen Filter app which dims the screen further (I have this set to 50% of my already 1% brightness setting) and claims to improve battery on AMOLED devices. I also have Juice Defend Ultimate running on "Aggressive" mode along with the built-in power saving mode running as well. Yet, looking on CPU Spy, my phone still does not enter deep sleep which is needed to see a real improvement in battery life as far as I am aware. I have tried restarting the phone and also plugging it back into charge before unplugging it with the screen turned on as many have recommended. Any ideas what else I can do?
Uninstall juicedefender. Its not uncommon that it drains a lot more juice than it saves.
There is must be any Application that is hogging your battery.
Install better battery state... Find that application and uninstall that.
I am getting better battery life in ICS as compared to GB...

I have that app installed, but frankly have no idea how to use it very well. From what I can tell, it is Kik Messenger which is creating a partial wake lock (but I need that to send pictures to my friends), Juice Defender which is supposedly saving battery life and biggest partial wake lock is RILJ or something. But, that is caused from a weak signal and I get that regardless of network at my house. Besides moving, I cannot alter that. As for Juice Defender, I've heard nothing but positive reviews from it. My main aim is to get deep sleep working, but how?

first ,samsung ICS is poorly made ,second you have a high chance of bricking if you wipe your phone with their official kernels so don't do it.
third ,like others said ,juice defender (and any app of this sort) doesn't work anymore (android 2.2 and up) so just uninstall it.
fourth ,not entering deep sleep is mostly due to a rouge app ,and since wiping is not an option for you you need to hunt it down manually ,use better battery status (learn how to use it!!!) and uninstall any apps you don't need.
fifth ,get some knowledge then get rid of crappy touchwiz ROM and install CM9 ,you'll see a huge improvement in terms of performance and battery life.

Okay, well this is my first proper Android device (minus an old second-hand HTC Desire which had awful storage and I used for around one month). Secondly, I do know that other ROMs offer better performance and battery life but flashing them onto my phone is something I'm not very comfortable with and surely it would also void my warranty. I've only had the phone for four weeks and don't want it wrecked already.

I'm fairly new to android as well ,had an S2 (which was so good that I only rooted it ,no custom ROMs) for 5 months before the note and that's it.
but I rooted my note the first day I got it ,and installed a custom ROM less than a week later (was a total noob at the time but I read and learnt quickly) .
then CM9 arrived and I flashed that immediately and haven't regretted it so far.
but I had no warranty to begin with so.....
note that if there is something that can wreck your shinny new note ,then it's amsung official ICS update (read the announcement sticky on ICS and bricking) .
but how experts can explain the fact i face:
With every official and custom ROM i install, even CM9, my note keeps eating battery when in use plugged to the charger... it's unbelievable... I can't understand how it happens.
by the way: i always full wipe before installing any custom/official rom.

Well, is there nothing that I can do to trigger deep sleep or improve battery life on the stock ROM first of all? Secondly, how difficult is rooting and would that void any warranty?

it can't happen ,I'd say you either have a faulty battery\charger or there is someting wrong with the phone itself
the note charges while in use and connected to a charger.

yes you can ,uninstall the violating apps ,learn to use better battery status ,you'll find that there is an app or two responsible for the wake locks ,thus preventing the phone from entering deep sleep.
or simply install every app and game that seems suspisious or poorly made ,and just keep the essential ones.
as for rooting ,it couldn't be simpler if done carefully and to the letter :
1.flash back to GB using PC ODIN
2.root it
3.backup your EFS folder (important , very important) search for it on the forums.
4. install custom ROMs (stay away from unsafe kernels please ,read the sticky thread about ICS kernels)
3. enjoy
use this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
yes there is an easy way to root while on stock ICS as per to this guide ,but I prefer you stay away from official ICS for the sole reason that it's dangerous.
remeber the key is to read and read and read ,in a month you could become a pro
on the other hand if you go the lazy way ,you could just end up with a bricked phone
also once you root ,your warranty is void ,though if you're careful you can return it to stock condition and they won't tell the difference
be careful

@Brad387
I have had mine for about 2 weeks. When I turned it on and did the initial setup it had a new software update which was ICS. Since then I have been having issues with deep sleep as well. I turned stuff on and off and it has been totally random what was preventing it from going to deep sleep.
I have done this trick that has been on this forum.
Put you phone to airplane mode.
Power it off completely
Remove battery for 20 seconds or more
put battery back in and power this thing back on
then turn off airplane mode.
This seems to have helped me get into deep sleep. BUT there have been instances of rogue crap going on. Like I was using Google maps with GPS on. When I got home and was done with my traffic mapping I turned off the GPS switch and turned off my phone. I checked an hour later and the battery had died 10% since I got home which was more than when I was driving. I checked Better Battery Stats and it showed that GPS was running that whole time. So I turned on GPS again in the toggle waited a couple seconds then turned it off again and bang it went into deep sleep. It sucks that I have to check crap on it all the time and have become a bit paranoid because the GPS glitch had my phone running pretty hot. Since then everything has been running well and deep sleeping.
There are other things I did do too and the below stuff is up to you if you wish to proceed. I rooted my phone which was very easy...at least for me. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20963730&postcount=3 this is what I used with no problem.
From there you can freeze a bunch of stuff you may not use like Social Hub, Accuweather etc etc.You will need Titanium for that though and root access.
I logged out of Latitude too which was on by default for some reason.
If I remember anything else I did I will hit you back here.
Bottom line was finally yesterday I was able to get thru the entire day without needing to plug in so there is light at the end of the tunnel...I hope.
Not sure if this has been mentioned but CPU Spy lets you see if you are getting into deep sleep mode and how much time you are in it along with the other CPU mhz that its running.
Hopefully this can help out a bit because I have been in the same boat and it has been driving me mad. Sorry for all the random thoughts too...I just typed them as I remembered things.

My phone does not seem to enter Deep Sleep, but runs constantly at 200 MHz instead. At present, after turning on the built-in power saving mode (not noticing any performance differs so can't even tell what it does), running Juice Defender Ultimate on aggressive and screen filter I burn around 2% per hour if I just leave my phone locked. Is that healthy?

Actually, there is something you can do about that!
Both Vodafone and Three can supply you with a Femtocell which can greatly improved your signal at home, and uses your home broadband as backhaul.
I know, because I have them!

Battery life of my Note was horrible after upgrade to ICS, and actually already quite bad the last month on GB2.3.6 (all unrooted).
It could get quite warm and often when opening my case the screen was already on.
So I did wipe my phone, reinstalled all apps and battery life has improved immensely.
I see several warnings here about chance to brick your phone when wiping on stock ROM, but not solving the battery drain is of course no option and we don't have a guarantee from Samsung for nothing...

Actually, there is something you can do about that!
Both Vodafone and Three can supply you with a Femtocell which can greatly improved your signal at home, and uses your home broadband as backhaul.
I know, because I have them!

Well, thanks for offering that advice but how expensive are these things? Also, I'm the only person on 3 in my house so kind of a waste really...

Is that healthy?

your phone should not be running at 200MHz when you hit the sleep/power button. So if its in your pocket and the screen is off then 200MHz is not healthy. Something is running in the background. Have you tried the airplane mode battery trick yet? What I did when that was happening to me was...turn on the airplane mode, power off the phone, pull out batt for 20 secs, put batt in and power on phone, turn off airplane mode, then go to CPU Stats and clear it, then put phone back to sleep and let it sit for a half hour or less if you cant handle that wait like I couldnt. Go back to CPU Stats and and click refresh and see if it helped and if your phone went into deep sleep.
