So I did the RUU flash for 2nd time so I could update with the MR, and this time I skipped the google sync options at startup.
And let me tell ya, that alone has made my phone 10x faster!!! WTF!?!?! most noticeable when dialing, but the keyborad rotates faster, the browser loads pages faster, etc...
I am thinking its mainly because of the large number of contacts, since I use the gmail app not the phone's. So my new goal is to limit the amount of stuff that gets stuffed into the phone by google. I haven't decided how I am going to do it but I dont need all 500 contacts in my phone thats for sure.
Try it out for yourself.
Go in to your gmail contacts and create a group only for the people you want to actually have on your phone. I have over 1000 in gmail but only about 50 in my phone. I created a group called "people i talked to" and assigned those people to that group.
Then on your phone go in to People and scroll over to groups and only pick the "people i talk to" group and uncheck anything else. Done.
Nice. I will be doing that.

um...There isn't a checkbox in the people group page for me, just a name of the group and a "group" icon next to it. Also, I still have 328 contacts listed, even after making the group. I'm going to just go to the "view" options in menu and turn off google contacts altogether. Any other suggestions, or am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks!

I did it off the top of my head. My phone is in the middle of flashing right now. Heh. Let me double check for you once it flashes and boots up. I'll edit this post.

He meant go into your contacts on the Gmail web site. There should already be a group called My Contacts. Move the contacts you actually talk to into that group.
Then, on your phone, go to People, then go to the Groups tab. Hit Menu and then Sync Groups. Uncheck all of them except My Contacts.
Done.

Yup. Thanks jonnythan. I guess that's where the confusion was. You first create the group and assign the contacts on gmail's website. And then on your phone you enable that group and disable the other groups in People < Groups (tab) < Menu (button) < Sync Groups
I don't even have a single google contact and only use my exchange contacts. Phone is still slow w/o a custom rom...
Sounds to me like you've loaded the new firmware. A lot of people are claiming these are benefits of the firmware. Faster page loads, faster keyboard flip etc....
I don't use google contacts either, but i've never had a problem with slownes..

I finally got this figured out, but there's one step to add to your process in order to get it to work. I originally had 328 contacts (i never use gmail contacts anyway :/)
Even after choosing sync groups and choosing the "people I talk to" group which had 65 contacts, going back to the main people app and going to Menu --> View I still saw Google(328) and it was checked. To finish it, I unchecked google, chose ok, and then all contacts were removed. I went back in by Menu --> View and checked it again. Now it says Google (65.)
Thanks everyone! Good tip anyway, I was getting pissed at all of those extra email contacts I don't use.

Come on guys, we live in the "NOW" age. Patience is a lost virtue.
j/k, I'm actually really patient, I think it's just because it's friday. That, or I'm just in a good mood to make excuses
thanks
thanks guys this really helped out alot
Hey guys, Is it possible to allow the phone to automatically link people in contacts to their facebook accounts ? Its a hassle to link dozens of accounts manually :S
Thanks.

There's ongoing discussions about this with people all reporting different results.
Personally, I have email address for most of my contacts and it links them effortlessly to the matching facebook accounts. It works every time I flash a new ROM, so I'm 100% sure that email addresses is the way to go. Besides, facebook uses email addresses for login so everyone on there has an email address on their account.
Hope this is of some use
Yeah true, but does that mean I have to link each contact with their email address ?? Thats the same thing dont you think ?

No - it does it automatically as long as they have matching email addresses.
Go to the people tab, all people, and then go along to the updates and events tab. There should be an option at the top "Link Profiles" and it should say "x match facebook friends" or something like that. Just click it and it does all 'x' of them.
Does that help?

Hmm I did that, and all I get is "ME", I just linked my account, but I see no option to link all my friends, could it be a privacy issue from facebook settings ?
All I did is go to ALL PEOPLE > EVENTS AND UPDATES > Click on Link facebook (but its mine only )

I can't explain it then. If I unlink a couple of my contacts and then go to that tab it offers to automatically link them again for me.
It could be down to the new privacy options that facebook recently added. I think if people accepted the new privacy options then this won't work, but if that was the case then I wouldn't expect you could do it manually either.
Doesn't make sense to me. Sorry mate .
Thanks for trying anyway, appreciated
You know whats weird ? when I open the facebook application and go to phone numbers, I see most of my friends' numbers and contact info :S
So confuzzling ..
Hmmm I found something even more weird ..
When I click on a contact, and go to link their account, "Suggested" accounts appear ... WHy doesnt it do that automatically to all of them ??
also, if your contacts have full names ie, "Joe Bloggs" instead of Joe, then it iwll come up with those suggestions at the top..

I will try editing one name and see if it works.
--
EDIT
That worked !! But now the name is displayed in [ Lastname, Firstname] Can I change that ?
Plus that means I have to edit all my contacts to have both first and last names ? Cant I just link them according to their first name only ? ahhh
I couldnt find another way to fix the issue.
All my friends MUST have a first and last name registered or else i have to link them manually.
Is there a tweak or a way I can force the recognition of facebook accounts by the first name only ?

You know, when I got my HD2 last week I got a lot of link suggestions together, with this new ROM I don't get any, with or without emails. Just single suggestions if you go into a contact. Strange!
Ok, Ive played and looked for a way to do this and i cant seem to get it? Does anyone else have more then one email in the email app, and if so how do you switch between email boxes? The only time i can look at a different box is when i get an email and the phone alerts me i have an email there?!
Press the menu button when you're in the e-mail application.. it should give you some options.
Nope, just select all, Folders, Compose, Refresh, Email Settings.....I checked all not in there

Yea...I did the same thing and couldnt figure it out for a little bit. Really pissed me off, but now I just have "Messaging" as an icon and i can select which email from there.
God damn this app is pissing me off! Every few minutes i get a notification that i have new email. I open the app and its the same damn emails i already marked as read. Few mintues later same thing all over again, sometimes it marks a few new ones as new that were read previously. Wtf!!
Can someone recommend a better email solution for these phones please?

Just a regular cox, comcast, at&t kind of email. My home email.
gmail works fine.
Interesting. I have my Client Location, and my Company email both tied in through the on-board S5 email app and have no issues. Both of which I use with Outlook or Office365 online. I'm sorry, I thought I would be able to have a suggestion for you. Other than perhaps slowing your push times, or sorting through the emails at time of receipt. Good luck to you.
I think it is because it is based upon email count, not time, such as 30 days, which is annoying. I miss the checkbox always there to mark as read, now you have to hit setting to get select, so annoying.

You should select S5 email (Other mails), not corporate one, and select "automatic push" so it will only notify you when new mail arrive.

Check out Nine. I use it for corporate email, but think it's a great client overall.

This. I thought that I was just gonna be using Nine to bypass the exchange security stuff but I really like it. Enough to where I'll probably use it on all future devices even if I can use stock without exchange security enabled.

You can get the checkboxes back. In the app go to settings>display> uncheck "Hide checkboxes." Works fine here. Once you have that activated, you select whichever message(s) you want to mark as read using the checkboxes then push the button on the bottom right that looks like a little open envelope to mark as read.
I'm using the gmail app right now, but I'm trying to switch over to the stock app to take advantage of the aod email notifications (for the time being anyway....). I'm not sure if i'm missing something or I'm the biggest noob around or what, but I can't seem to archive new gmail messages from the inbox or the stock email app. My options are swipe right: Move,Set Reminder,Unread,Reply ... swipe left: Delete. I noticed if I move messages, I have to select a folder to put them in. This marks then as read, however, I would like to simply archive my messages and have them appear in 'All Messages' without having a label attached to them. Is this possible and I'm totally missing something? Or is this just gonna happen? I realize this is more of a standard email client, but given the amount of gmail accounts out there, this is something I would expect would be available for a google email account. I will stick to the Gmail app for now, but would be nice to know, even just to get the oad notifications, thanks.
ps - I searched the forums first, but if I missed the answer already, sorry.
tldr: Archive in Samsung mail client ... where is it?
Don't think you are going to get it with the stock app. However, when Nougat rolls out for the S7 I am hoping the AOD will also update to show all notifications.

Albeit a little late to reply to you, but I ran into the same issue.
The answer basically is that in Gmail terms, archiving a message means removing all tags from it.
You can do this on the Samsung mail app by "moving" it to "all messages" folder...it sucks, I know
Well, I'm not 100% to your liking, but I did not use either both gmail or samsung mail. I switched to bluemail. If you want, you should try

It's the same as on iPhones I think, where a gmail account on their default email client app will go straight to delete.
Moreover, as Yahoo app does the same (I think), the outlier might actually be Gmail which doesn't let you delete, but only archive emails.
