best gps software and bt gps receiver...

Hey guys,
I want to buy some gps software for my dopod 838pro and a bluetooth gps receiver. I was wondering what ones work best with your hermes devices and what problems arise when using them.
I was looking at the papago software and it seems pretty good. If there is anyone here using it I would like to know your feedback on how it performs and also what kind of gps reciever you are using.

I suggest IBlue 737 with the latest MTK chipset, it has nice auto on/off feature an 25 hours of battery life. another more expensive option is the Garmin Gps10X (the new Sirf3 model only, the old one is crap)

but regarding the IBlue 737, will it or does it need anything else other then my 8525 to work?
I have google maps on the 8525. will it work with that alone or do I have to add something else?

google map is good with any GPS. (just nmake sure you have unlimited data) else it could be expensive.

ive used iGuidance 4 and iGO my way plus 2006 with BT-Q818
GUI:
iGO rocks.. smooth.. and really nice...
iGuidance .. just plain and dull.. gps tracking not smooth as iGO is.
what i really like about iGuidance though is the TTS feature, and it tells you which side the destination is.. iGO does not..
if the features i liked in iGuidance would just be integrated in iGO, ill get it in a heartbeat.

and yes I have the unlimited data plan, had it for a long time. I used to have a smt 5600 before the 8525.

yes, it will work with yahoo go 2.0. i use one myself(live in UK). make sure u have a data package though.(unlimited would be the best). i use t-mobile wnw £7.50 and a BT gps.its amazing what you can do with this phone.i love it

My favorite GPS sw is TomTom, great features, easy to use and no bugs. I use it with a earthmate bt-20. Takes up 1gb of space but worth it. Tomtom automatically connects to my BT receiver, responds quickly and has nice smooth 3d graphics.
My next favorite is MSN streets. It is easy to use and has the most up to date maps of my area.
I really dont care for Google maps unless I'm in a G network. If you dont have internet reception which is often the case when you travel then Google maps is completely useless.
The Earthmate BT-20 receiver seems to work ok but it is the only one I have tried. Its a ugly yellow, blue, and black 2"x3.5" plastic box. I look forward to the day when GPS is built in.

im in aussie town too, tomtom 6 (soon 7) on the hermes with some bluetooth gps that i got off ebay works wonders.
also has no issues running on prophet (my wifes phone) and my now retired magician.
microsoft streets was good when running in offline mode however it looks like they dont support australia anymore with the only map set available being a few years old.

i have the garmin GPS 10x and i get a weird error - ive only had it a week, long story short sometimes it wont turn on. --- how do you tell which model you have?
when it works, its awesome. tells you which turns to make, has a "recalculate" feature, good maps with a lot of detail
how do you connect it to google maps? i did it one time but haven't been able to do it since! would like to run it simulatneous with garmin XT the software that comes with it, google in satellite mode so you see from the sky where you travel to and hear from the garmin software which way to turn, would be pretty neat
i get confused which settings need to be put to which com port? i tried to add it in blue tooth and set up COM port 0 in there, and then go intot he GPS external setting (WM6) and set up both hardware and program port to 0 as well. cant get it to work alongside garmin XT software

Microsoft was offering a BT Pharos GPS for about $70 for PocketPC devices awhile back, not sure if they still are.
I got one and it works very well. The only difference between this and the typical Pharos offering is that it doesn't come with any software. Using it with Livesearch works perfectly -- the only thing Livesearch is lacking is vocal turn-by-turn directions and automatic trip recalculation. But of course you're not limited to just using livesearch with the GPS anyway.

Nokia Smart2GO.. It's tomtom but for free worldwide. (with some very minor limits/payable extras)

my favourite is Navigon (you can tinker soo nicely with all the settings 'under the hood' ).
Dunno whether Navigon has a AU map at all, but they sell under a different name in the USA.
I would recommend any sirfIII GPS antenna with a good review in one of the navigation fora. I am using a cheap Mainnav that is OK.(great reception even behind metal coated car windows)

I use TomTom 6 with a Nokia Bluetooth GPS reciever.. i got it for 29.99 from Fry's!!!
I live in central texas and when Katrina was on its way to New Orleans fries had CRAZY discounts on GPS units, Maglites, Waterproof cases for pdas.. basicly almost anything that can be used for "survival" so i grabbed a bunch of other stuff... now that Hurricane Dean is on its way i'm pretty sure they'll have discounts again... Time to hit up Fry's!!

GPS on Hermes without receiver. Possible?

Hi guys n girls,
I'm kinda new here and I have a question I've been dying to ask since I got hold of my HTC hermes. I'm currently using Vodafone's version of HTC Hermes, which is the V1605.
Is it possible for HTC Hermes to use GPS navigation without an external GPS receiver such as a bluetooth device? I learnt that HTC Hermes has no GPS chipset so it will definitely need a receiver, but I'm just curious and I wanna confirm. Thanks

I'm not sure if you search for GPS or looked at the Wiki on the Hermes but its been covered a few times. The only thing you can really do is get a bluetooth GPS receiver or something along those lines.

I use a Holox bt-321 GPS receiver, works fine!
I was going to link to an ebay auction for one but its possibly the ONLY day when there isnt an auction for one!

I bought here from a user a Holux M-1000. Works fine and without any problems.

its a virtual GPS for phones without GPS, Goes on Phone Cell info and Wifi AP Signals, you have to use wifi but it does pinpoint where you are better with wifi on
also out puts the data via a com port so you can use Satnav an other GPS enabled apps with it

Garmin GPS 10
I'm using an older Garmin GPS 10 that I purchased a few years ago, but it stills works great. It is rechargeable and the battery seems to last forever. I also using the Beta version of Garmin's Mobile XT, which gives my 8525 the same look and feel as "modern" GPS-only devices.
Some of the cool "toys" the software uses is:
2-D or 3-D map view
PeerPoints (sending GPS coords via SMS or MMS)
Local gas prices near you
Real time traffice
Weather
POIs ( you can have up to 4,000 waypoints/favorites/locations)
Voice prompts
Hotels.com info
etc.
Of course, some of the features depends on whether or not you have a data plan or WiFi access. I also like it because it is very small, works via bluetooth and is very accurate. I also use BeelineGPS because I also like to Geocache.

[Q] Navigation on folio 100

Is there any good navigation software for folio 100?
For gps we can use blutooth gps.

so far the only SW I know are Navigon, Sygic, Copilot and the one from Google.

You can try Copilot, iGO or Sygic Aura

I tried to install Sigic Aura but it told me it need "3D hardware acceleration not available in this phone". Is it possible to solve this problem???.

to use navigation on the folio, u will need it to be constantly powered in the vehicle. there are many bluetooth gps receivers, and some of them are reported to work nicely with android 2.2 with the help of some 3rd party apps. but didi anyone find a way to power the folio in the car?

Officially there is no connector that you can use, but you can use a 3th party adaptor to get a 220/110 volt out of the cigarette lighter outlet.
You can also get a external backup battery.

I have a 12->15-21v laptop power supply to use in the car which was much better than trying to use a 240v charger in the car (it kept killing the little invertors I tried before).

Ok, i found a solution to using gps on the folio via bluetooth. There is an app called gpsredirect for winmo5 n up. Install bluetooth gps on android. U will need a pda running win mo 5 or above with integrated gps chipset. I han an old eten g500+ i was not using. I will make as my bluetooth gps receiver for the folio. Gps redirect works only on some devices, check the tested n supported list!
Just need to find a working navigation app for the folio now. Got a car charger for the eten g500+, just need to solve the charging for folio n the navigation app n we r good to go.

ok. i got co-pilot live on the folio and it works nicely. runninf on full screen. the graphics are not astonishing since its extrapolated and not made for 1024x600 screens but it looks fine to me.
I havent gotten time to try it with the apps i mentioned and the eten g500+, but will do so as soon as possible. now just needs to figure out a way to charge the folio in the car
at the end, it just for the sake of doing this and seeing a nav app running properly on the folio, but practically it is useless. the screen is too big to be legally placed on the dashboard of the car or the windshield for that matter.
secondly due to the screen size and brightness, it is not advised to drive at night with that kind of brightness flashing in the eyes.

i have a bleuthoot gps and working with navigon and ndrive on my folio.

I can't post this in development because I an still a nobody ...
Would it be possible to add in rfcomm for Bluetooth SPP serial port? The Nook would make a great tablet for telescope mount control over BT. You can't do it with the iPad due to the security around the BT stacks. It would also allow NEMA GPS modules to be read for different applications.
I'm running CM7 7.0.2 and this isn't yet available.

I use a stand alone GPS receiver and sometimes my Droid cell phone to send my location to the Nook to use CoPilot and Google Maps on the Nook. That's at least half of what you're talking about right?

Hmm, you got me pondering...
I got out my trusty Garmin GPS 10 and I can pair but it's not connected. That could be for a couple of reasons (the Nook only connects on demand maybe.) But if what you are saying is correct, maybe it does support SPP since it uses a comm port for the GPS.
But, when I connected from my notebook and checked the services, SPP wasn't one of them (just OPEX and AD2P.) I will keep playing but I half expect that part of the SPP stack requirements are missing.
On the plus side, if the GPS will work too, that is a second plus since it's nice to be able to ask the GPS for the specific time and location during the telescope setup (it matters.)
I'll look for an app in the Market that might read an external GPS devices and show the location. I notice most apps are for reading the phone GPS (which we don't have.)

Android does not support SPP, but there are multiple apps in the market which do, Bluetooth GPS Provider is the one which I prefer as it works very well and just works no matter what.

I fired up the Garmin GPS 10 and it works using Bluetooth GPS. That means an application can add in the SPP. That is perfect and gives us hope!

Yes, apps can directly talk with a Blutooth GPS. There are a handful which do this, or again, Bluetooth GPS Provider will provide the BT GPS to every app that asks for GPS.

This isn't only about GPS. GPS is just one aspect. I want to communicate with any serial device over BT. My understanding from reading it that rfcomm and the applications can supply that function.
What I did notice last night is that even without an application that supplies rfcomm, the Nook would still discover the devices unlike the iPad. I could pair to pretty much anything I wanted but it wouldn't connect. That's normal from my perspective.
At least I know it can be made to work.

Well, the XOOM does at least. Not sure whether it was Motorola's or Google's doing though. I use a Bluetooth to Serial adapter from Roving Networks quite successfully with it. I'm unaware of any other devices that do it.

I agree that native Android doesn't support SPP but the rfcomm library does and if it's linked into the application, SPP works.
Now if I can only find a way to use VNC to control my PPC from the Nook without going through a remote server (maybe via adhoc or BT ...)

Any device at API level 5 (2.0) or above may support BluetoothSocket, RFCOMM and therefore SPP unless the OEM did something to screw it up.

does bluetooth GPS work at newer roms?

ever since i got froyo i haven't got sygic and my external bluetooth gps to work. seems like sygic doesn't detect it even though i got the bluetooth mouse app like before.
before it's open the BT mouse app then connect my ext bt gps then load up sygic and starts finding the satellite.

i've used all the 2.2, 2.2.1, 2.3.3, and 2.3.4 roms and i use the app "bluetooth gps provider" found in the android market and it works great. and i use a sirfIII bt gps receiver called globalsat bt-359, it gives me 3 ft accuracy and has excellent battery life.
p.s. navigon is way better than sygic if you ask me

i didn't get it because i forgot about it (i had sygic and copilot in mind when I search). not sure if it's just iphone only that time.
