[Q] VPN on Liberty? - Droid X General

Has anyone been able to connect to a VPN on Liberty?
When I try to connect, a popup says "Attention. Unable to connect to the network. Do you want to try again?" It pops up instantly as if it didn't even try to connect.

Custom ROMS
This is one of the biggest issues not only with Liberty but with ROMs in general. I say big because it affects pretty much every ROM I've tried. One other item that always breaks is HDMI. Then again HDMI wasn't originally part of Android so it's a Blur thing. I've tested so many ROMs out there and sure, they offer nice tweaks here and there, but what it comes down to, at least for me, is having the damn thing work when you want it to. So yeah, you got the bloat removed and have some sprinkled elements here and there and it's cool however if you only have one phone to play around, it gets old very fast.
What I've resorted to was going with the Blurry based ROM. I'm currently using Rubix Blurry 1.8 and everything is working just fine and comes with an overclocker tool to boot. On top of the ROM I've installed a theme and swapped out several icons using Ninjamorph. So far, that's what's worked for me and I can VPN/Remote and use the HDMI just fine. Different strokes for different folks

Thanks. This is for Cisco VPNs. I think we also have a Cisco VPN, so I may be able to use this.
Liberty 1.5 connects to the PPTP VPN but I cannot access any of the servers on the VPN.

Can't connect to XDA W/G1

I don't know if anyone else is having this problem but it sure is getting annoying. I can NOT connect to XDA with my phone at all. I've tried several different ROMs to see if it was the ROM and none of them would let me connect. I can connect to any other site that I frequent without issue, in fact, any other data connection I try works perfectly.
Anyone have a idea what might be the problem?

Huh... how about using an alternate browser? Steel? Opera?
I don't see why xda would have issues. I browse it all the time with my phone and I've used JF, CM and Dude roms. No problems browsing.
Is this with 3G, Edge, Wifi?
Maybe try to tether it with a wifi enabled laptop and see if you can go to xda.
If you still can't but can go to other sites... I dunno. I would almost go as far as to say that your being blocked.
Also... try the xda ip address.

If that works but the http://www.xda-developers.com doesn't... then it's an issue with your dns. If not... then it's your data provider.

Cellular systems often employ a large block/pool of IPs and recycle IPs amongst devices (when you go out of coverage or turn off your phone). It's remotely possible that OP was trying to connect to xda using an IP which had been previously banned/temp-banned from xda. The probability of this being the case is pretty slim though.
Most likely its a dns issue or something. Try connecting via IP as suggested above.

Thanks for the replies guys.
This problem seem to have started after I downloaded JacMan Hero v1.7 using TMO data, WiFi worked most of the time. This was tried at home and OTR.
I've tried all the browsers mentioned including WebDroid beta when i noticed this problem. Flashed back to HardSPL, ..14.11 radio, JF1.42 thinking that this may be a possible solution. Still no worky. Tried a bunch of different ROMs and finally got it to work on 5.0.2Hr5 w/26I radio, which incedently is the only ROM/Radio combo, so far, that will let me connect to XDA. Oh... same results w/tethering.
Never thought of trying to connect with the ip addy so I don't know if that would have worked.
Is there a way to clear the DNS manually?
I would like to call TMO but how do I present this to them, you know I can't say "I've tried a bunch of different ROMs so I know its on your end"?

Vibrant wifi issue?

If I am at home using my personal router, my wifi works great and I have no problems at all. However, when I am at the library, which is everyday for me, if i try to use their wifi I instantly get this error message that the page cannot be displayed even though my phone claims i am connected to their wifi.
anyone else have this issue? it is extremely annoying and i downloaded wifi fixer but it didnt fix anything.
any ideas?
If it works at home then I doubt it's an issue on your side, sometimes on networks such as school campuses and libraries you have to register your device on the network for it to be able to access the internet. Have you asked the library on how you can do that?
Well it is a public library and they have fliers up that tell you how to use their wifi. I thought it was an issue with my phone so I didn't bother asking a librarian. If no one else has a solution I will definitely be asking tomorrow.

well, Android has had that issue ever since, and it is still not fixed.
I think Samsung Galaxy S gets around it in the Wi-Fi proxy config (under settings, Wireless and Network, hit the menu button at the bottom of the screen, and go to Advanced), but you need to know the proxy hostname and port (I think the default will be 80 for HTTP requests).
I haven't tested it though.
Here's the issue log from code.google.com
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1273&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
Mine cannot get on WiFi at the rink I go to. Other people could not get their notebooks or netbooks onto that WiFi as well. My HD2 connects to that WiFi just fine, though.
I don't think it's a Vibrant-specific issue.
I've had a similar problem with the wifi network on my campus. It redirects to a logon page that the vibrant won't even display. Apparently the android browser has an issue with security certificates that aren't configured properly. Froyo is supposed to fix it, but in the mean time try connecting with the firefox browser. I'm able to connect with it, then switch back to the regular browser or any other program. Once you're logged in you're good to go.

[Q] How to allow incoming TCP connections (WebDroid, SSHDroid, etc.)?

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone knows how to make Android open the ports necessary for incoming connections for server apps to work without having to ping the client first under su?
Or failing that, is there a way to run a script that will ping the client IP instead of having to run the command by hand in terminal?
Thanks!

Second that! Something's off in 99/100 ROMS, TCP doesn't seem to do anything. Only one Sense ROM by cotulla seems to work.
I disabled the adblocking hosts file to test if it had anything to do with it (e.g. SSHDroid doesn't work with it) but that didn't help anything either
Agreed, does not seem to work on any rom I've tried, only Cotulla's 'Stock Desire' Sense build seems to work (this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893620).
Too bad Sense's so completely dire, otherwise I'd use that. I want CyanogenMOD.
Having the same question. I am sure here must be someone who knows how to enable inbound connections....
Little update:
I noticed it is possible for me to ping and use all services when using the gateway to access everything, in my case the access point/wifi router.
So it looks like this is some kind of routing/firewall issue but I can't find anything about default blocking or firewalling on android...
Good news. I found out what is causing this on almost every build.
It has something to do with the stock wifi tethering. If you try and enable it in almost every rom it will fail, but now turn on your wifi again and everything works as it would normally do!
The build it does work on also has working stock wifi tethering, so that explains that...
For now it's good to have this workaround and I hop to have a proper fix in the future
im using RAFDROID 3.0 and i dont think i have this problem at all. I tried SwiFTP and it connected without any issues.
Try to update the busybox version mine is 1.15.2

I tried this on Frankinstine's awesome ROM, but no cigar. There has to be a firewall rule or setting we can tweak to allow this kind of traffic...

It works for me, but it's not 100% foolproof. It seems to work for a while, but not permanently. However, it's still better than the ping method. The ping method would never work for me, since I use Wifi at least 4 different places a week. Even when done automatically, how would I know what to ping on what Wifi network?! Random DHCP on workstations notwithstanding...
This does it for me:
turn on normal Wifi
wait around 10 seconds (for Wifi to 'start')
turn on Wifi hotspot (normal wifi should turn it self off automatically)
wait around 20 seconds (the hotspot takes a while to 'start', it actually fails (error) for me, but still does the trick)
turn normal Wifi on again
At that point it "works" for me, at least for a while.
At the very least this seems to indicate that the broken Wifi hotspot and this problem are related -- on Cotulla's build (where stock Wifi hotspot WORKS), this problem is non-existent.
Unfortunatly your steps do not work for me :-(

That's unlucky. Those steps seem to "work" for me on CleanDroid 1.30. Maybe we can just hope it works again when the stock wifi hotspot is fixed.
Alternate "solution":
Get Cotulla's "Stock Desire" ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893620
It definitely works on that. Too bad sense is dog****, and your battery will last for a day max.

Just tried this and it worked. As soon as I started the wifi the second time my computer started pinging HD2.
My usual procedure for fixing this was to start wifi, see assigned IP address and then ping my computer from 'Net Ping' app. This can be faster sometimes.
Is there a way to port hotspot from Cotulla's build to a nonSense build? No way for me to come back to sense again

Wifi Hotspot - Why Gmail?

Hey everyone,
I've tried all of the tethering apps (usb/wifi) and none seem to give my laptop my legend's 3g data connection. I'm running CM7 (new stable version ) and i've been trying to use the built in hotspot to no avail. I can connect fine, even with WPA2 security, and the laptop connects fine (win7), and even shows full bars on the wifi icon in the bottom right of my taskbar, which says "Internet Access" when my mouse hovers over it.
The problem is, whenever I fire up chrome on my laptop, I get a page that says stuff like "Access denied", "authorization required", "You may need to sign in", and just gives no internet.
At first, I thought that it could be my carrier's fault (SFR France), that they don't want me tethering my phone's connection (I have a contract with unlimited data). The weird thing is, I can actually use gmail on my laptop! Yes, fully load new messages as they come, look through my archived messages, trash, spam, everything. Not even offline messages, it's really connected. So why can I access gmail on my laptop but nothing else? Could it be something to do with https connection to gmail or something like that? My phone's 3g works great, and my laptop has no troubles connecting to my home wifi. I've scoured XDA and google, and never figured it all out.
Anyways, thanks for reading!
Michael
Troubleshooting 101:
- first, please try another laptop.
if the other laptop works, then your current laptop has issues.

Have you tried pdanet app? That's what I use and it works wonderfully.

yeah man that was one of the first ones i tried. no go for me, same issue (not connection, but internet access).
When I try to open a page, my phone shows that it starts to download data (with the arrows lighting up and the "H" for HSDPA in the status bar). But then stops and my browser says nope.

How do I change the DNS on my laptop? Don't I need to use cmd for that?
And an interesting new development. Hopefully someone smarter than me understands this:

So its GOT to have something to do with the https...
Any ideas?

Well, I have Windows XP and I don't have experience with Windows 7, but I remember that since Vista the network connections can be set as Home connection or Public (or something like that).
It's a wild guess but maybe the problem with browsing to HTTP websites has something to do with these network settings in Windows 7...
Try to compare the settings in the Home Wifi connection in your laptop vs the Mobile Wifie connection in your laptop, maybe some settings are different between the two.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately that doesn't change anything. I definitely know what you're talking about, and everytine I connect to a new wifi network I always select home as the network type, so that my browsing isn't restricted. Hence I did the same here, and even tried the public option, but no effect.

Yep I tried usb tethering, same deal. Windows troubleshooting "couldn't identify the problem". It's gotta be something either on my carrier's side, my phone's side, or my laptops side that is restricting hotspot access to http sites.

USB tethering?

Looking for a way to USB tether my Iconia tablet through my android phone..
before anyone gives me the "just use wifi" speech.. I cant due to where I work.. absolutely ZERO wifi allowed.. they have wifi sniffers. 3G is fine.. sooo need a way to tether via USB.
Both my devices are rooted.
I would love this as well. Could always use bluetooth dun though right?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
nope.. BT freq's are monitored too.. can really only use USB.
I just can't understand why this is such an obstacle.. figure something like this would be easy to do.
Very interested in finding a way to do this as well.
I haven't test it, but in the Thor ROM 14.2 there is under "Tethering & Mobil Hotspot" > USB-Tethering. Maybe you try that ROM.
Tried this with my DROIDX and the built in 3G hotspot app which has a USB tethering option. No go.
Pdanet is my usb tetherer of choice. Right now I don't think it's supported but they may get that together and it seems something more feasible as android becomes a legit OS.

I'm assuming you read this thread:

which leads to your quoted link. In that thread he specifically mentions the kernel which worked (Only thing needed (tested with 2.3 version of this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...hp?t=1170319):)
Sorry if you've already seen that and still no luck...

Glad that worked... I may be trying the same thing very soon.
I wish PDAnet would soften up and just do stuff for root. Their iphone app is only available to jailbreakers so you'd they wouldn't be so up tight.
Well after a few days of using tether this way.. Ive figured out that most apps wont recognize USB tethering.. I cant get Google Talk to sign in. Google Market seams to work fine though. Seems like some things will tell you that there is no internet connection but still work.. some just wont.
