[Q] How to avoid the OTA FroYo update? - HTC Aria General

I found a forum a few minutes ago that stated that HTC was rolling out the FroYo update for the Aria. I am happily rooted and running FR008 (thanks attn1!) and have no interest in the update. I like my hotspot app, use it every day.
Will this update happen without my consent? How do I avoid this intrusive measure?
(A co-worker who owns an Evo recently lost his hotspot app when he got an update from Sprint...he is LIVID because Sprint requires $ to enable tethering.)

Go to settings>About Phone>System software updates>uncheck

I don't believe you will be prompted to update your phone since you aren't on the stock firmware (or one of the Liberated Eclair ROMs that were based on it).
Even if you were using stock firmware, it is not forced on you -- you are prompted on whether you want to update. I imagine your friend accepted the update without realizing that it would cause his hotspot app to stop working.

Just curious, what forum did you find this information at?

Yeah I'd like to know that too, because as far as we know HTC only started rolling out the OTA update on Asia

far as i know its only Asia getting the OTA, and drumist is correct, you will not recieve any official updates while running a custom ROM

Wouldn't the OTA update come to the phone via the carrier and not from HTC directly? I thought that if the phone is rooted then the carrier could no longer push an update.

also correct, updates come from the SP. for N America that would be ATT.
if the phone is rooted and running cutom ROM it will not recieve the notice

ROOT - Official Verizon 2.1 OTA Upgrade - Eris

Thought that this would need to be created since the upgrade has begun. I have 2 Eris Droids on my account and 1 has received the update but not the other. It is possible that because the other has the v3 leak already maybe it will not update until there is an update beyond 2.1. I am in the Washington DC Metro area. Which has a HUGE Verizon base.
I am committed to finding the root for this. I will work on it myself and report any progress. If anyone else wants to contribute their findings...feel free...
Save for future use...1
Still have not achieved anything as of yet...

No one on any of the leaks has received the OTA update. Its possible they never will, as it has been stated the leaks have a higher HBOOT than the OTA. OF course if you ask the people on the VZWSupport on twitter they all claim that the leakers will receive it before the end of the OTA period. But since no one, as far as I know, on a leak has received it I will believe it when it happens. Just my 2 cents
I agree with you on that. Its our penalty for circumventing the VERIZON way...LOL
This thread is a bit superfluous, it has been confirmed you can root the OTA update the same way you could root 1.5:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681648
However, the leaked RUU updates changed the HBOOT version, where the OTA update did not. This means leakers are SOL, at least for the time being...
sorry wrong post lol
DEAd thread.
Version 3 of leak is almost identical (minus a few missing files that are not needed) to the OTA.
OTA users can root via 1.5 method.
Search function FTW.

Are you sayign Version 3 leaked can be rooted?
No, he is stating that if you went from 1.5 stock to 2.1 OTA you can root using the same method as the 1.5 -> 2.1 root.
If you have any of the leaked versions you cannot root yet.

No. v3 changed the hboot version.
I am using a rooted version of 1.5 right now, I keep getting the message from Verizon if I want to update to 2.1 OTA.
Anyone know if could allow that update to download and would it work? Lets assume it does not work would it ruin my phone? Or worse case I just re-flash my phone back to rooted 1.5?
Reason I am using rooted 1.5 over any of the current rooted leaked 2.1 roms is the bluetooth is not working with my new car I picked up last weekend I am very curious to find out if the problem with bluetooth is a bug in 2.1 leaked versions or is also present in the official over the air version too.
Btw 1.5 rooted bluetooth works just fine. And my friend Droid and my wife blackberry work just fine so I know my car bluetooth is not the problem.
not only do people with the leak
not have to worry about getting the update, they also have to worry about losing their 3g, which is what happened to me when the official verizon ota update hit. lucky for me, the local store didnt know i root and ordered me a replacement since i was under warrantee. i think my rooted phone and verizon kept trying to push the ota update back to each other freezing up my 3g speed.

New Android 2.2 Software Update for Nexus One phones
Starting today, Nexus One users will begin to receive the Android 2.2 (codenamed Froyo) over-the-air software update on their phones. This update provides some great new features including support for making your handset a portable hotspot and support for Adobe Flash within the browser. For a complete list of everything we’ve included in Android 2.2, please see the Android 2.2 Platform Highlights.
In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone's notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones - and most users will receive the notification by the end of the week . We hope you enjoy these new features.

Just got the OTA this morning when I woke up. I was on FRF83, the new update was 507kb and brought my NExus One to FRF85B.
Very cool. Not all that exciting, more of a relief than anything. Clearly something fishy was up as the last few builds didn't seem to have any issues anyway...oh well glad its over. Now wheres gingerbread dammit!?!?!

Great news.
I am curious, don't the at&t phones get a version with a different build number than T-mobile phones? I was reading that at&t guys were getting this same update build as well.
Nope, same build for both, so no more update fragmentation.
I suspect the Euro ones wil get a different build, just for different localisation options.

If i have the stock 2.1 update 1 rom, which is rooted, has kmobs kernel and amon ra recovery, I suppose I wont get an OTA right?
How would I go about updating when someone creates an update.zip? Do i have to wipe anything?
I'm currently running Froyo build FRF50. I can't seem to see the update OTA from systems update. FYI, I'm currently traveling in Vietnam. If I download the .zip recovery of FRF85, will it work?
google wont push the update to every phone at once, it will be a gradual update through all the phones, so you wont see it in system updates until your phone is selected to recieve it.
Got my OTA update a couple of hours ago. On T-Mobile in UK. Update from FRF83 to FRF85B.

You can manually update FRF50 to FRF83, then FRF83 to FRF85B. Or just wait for OTA.
I have build number ERE27. Will I still get the update?
Yes of course you will.
excellent news. waiting for a FRF85B ROM or a FRF83->FRF85B patcher now...
edit: the update.zip was out last night

They usually release only to a few thousand at a time the first few days, then up to 10,000 a day a few days later or something like that, so you might not get it till next week if its truly coming out.
They also have typically announced the update in the Verizonwireless.com forums under the android\incredible section. Until you see it there I would consider it a rumor.
Im just wondering if we will even get the ota if we're rooted or if we will have to unroot first.
According to this, the update is for real:

gonna have to unroot to get updates.
EDIT: I take this back. It depends on your version. If you have an older version of software and you have not turned off notifications you will get the notification to update. If, however you're running a froyo ROM then my understanding is that you won't see the update.
Been on all the android forums today , so far nobody has gotten the update OTA.
If it was out today vzw would confirm it like they did when we got the first update.
All I heard today was a friend of a friend got the update , RIGHT !
Verizon hasn't released the "official" OTA, but there is a leaked version that people are downloading and installing. It appears to be authentic, but since not an OTA may affect future Radio updates if you install it. Plenty of info over at the Droid Forum.

I'm really anxious to get the update, but I'm going to wait for the OTA. I updated my Eris with a leaked OTA, and I ended up regretting it. It made rooting much more difficult, and stopped me from getting the final OTA.

Do you know how it stopped you from getting the final OTA? i would think if you wiped and went back to a stock ROM the network wouldn't know the difference.

Nope. Known issue with the Eris leak.
Well, I'm not sure if if I have the OTA or not, or just part of it.
I rooted with the original instructions, then updated everything with Unrevoked 3.1. Stock ROM installed, have working WIFI tether.
Yesterday, got a message in my notification bar that a Verizon widget was available. I can now add a new Data Usage widget to my desktop, which says "Data Usage 0.0/0 MB Estimate as of N/A". Not sure why it isn't updating, but it's possible that it's related to me having a corporate rather than a personal account.
Never got a prompt to install any OTA. Tethering still works.
Hardware version 0002, Firmware version 2.1-update1
So maybe the Verizon widget was pushed by itself without the full OTA since I don't have the standard recovery?
FYI, the OTA has been halted in favor of packaging it up with the official Android FroYo v2.2 update. So instead up two OTA's we will have one OTA to rule them all!

No, the recommendation would probably be to hold your horses and wait till the OTA get's patched so we can simply upgrade without any hassle.

[Q] Help needed debranding Wildfire

Hi,
I'm getting ready to debrand my Wildfire, but have a few questions first.
So the steps are:
1. Make a GoldCard using GoldCard Tool v0.0.5 over at MoDaCo.
2. Download the latest ROM. Is this it?
RUU_Buzz_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2_22_405_1_Radio_13_55_55_24H_3_35_20_10_release_160191_signed.exe
Then what do I do?
Also, will this just debrand the phone so it will be exactly the same as if I bought the phone direct from HTC and put my SIM card in? Will I get updates to the Android firmware as soon as HTC release them?
I'm not worried about rooting. I just want to remove the branding to improve the speed of the handset.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Ok, so I managed to debrand the phone using RUU_Buzz_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2_22_405_1_Radio_13_55_55_2 4H_3_35_20_10_release_160191_signed.exe and everything seems fine.
One small problem though. If I go into the Software Info screen it says Android Version 2.2.1 and according to Wikipedia the latest stable version is 2.3.1 so I would have thought that my phone would update to the latest Android software automatically, but if I go to System Software Updates it says my phone is up to date.
Am I missing the point or should a debranded Wildfire update to the latest version available?
2.2.1 was released several months ago, but, it is only being available now. Its unlikely 2.3.1 will ever be released for the Wildfire by HTC.
A debranded phone also depends on the updates provided by the parent company (In this case, HTC), and, its totally upto them whether to provide 2.3.1 or not, and, as I said before, that scenario seems extremely bleak. (Cyanogenmod 7 being developed will bring 2.3.1 to Wildfire, but, it is not 'official', not that it matters)
Welcome to the world of Android Fragmentation.
Ok, thanks, 3xeno, for clearing that up. One more question; will my phone now automatically receive any updates HTC release?
Also, I've noticed that wifi tethering no longer works since I debranded. Is there any way around this?
is it just the wifi tether or the whole wifi?
did you accept and over-the-air update?
an over-the-air update killed the wifi on my desire and i had to reinstall the latest ruu using the goldcard

No, the only update I did was using the RUU with a goldcard.
I contacted HTC about the wifi tethering and their workaround below worked for me.

We are aware that in specific circumstances this issue may appear. We are working on a fix to push out to customers very soon, however in the meantime we have a temporary work around for you. How do I update to 2.3.5?

When I bought it used, it was running 2.3.4. I realized that 2.3.5 came out recently, and would like to update.
Supposedly, I should be able to get OTA updates, but the problem is that I don't have a data plan, so I would not be able to get the updates that way.
When I go to system updates, it tells me "your system is currently up to date," which is a lie. Is there another way to update? Would it require me to lose all of my apps/contacts?
As of right now, I'd like to run stock android, and not CM8.
2.3.5 is not currently available for the Nexus One. If you want 2.3.5: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Nexus_One:_Full_Update_Guide

As the poster above me stated, 2.3.5 was for the Nexus S 4G (Sprint). 2.3.4 is the latest official ROM for N1 so your phone is not a "liar."
You don't have to have a data plan to receive OTA updates. As long as you are connected via WIFI you can still receive new OTA's once they have been pushed.
Lastly, when you update via OTA, you do not lose any of your contacts or apps.
Hope this helps clear up the confusion.

There is a 2.3.5 branch for the N1 in the AOSP. Would be nice to see some completely stock builds, I think the closest is Mark Denver's ROM but he has added some of his own tweaks to it.
That's unfortunate.
I guess I'll keep 2.3.4 until ICS comes out. 2.3.4 still does everything I need.
why to update to 2.3.5. I think 2.3.4 is enough.

the only way to get 2.3.5 can be achieved by rooting and flashing custom recovery.
you can get everything u need in custom rom which will have tweaks( degree depending upon rom you want to use) lest u need to keep ota rom ..
Just wait, 2.3.5 is just incremental
why would you want a new update? 2.3.4 is good enough for a phone.
The major item in the 2.3.5 release was for Near Field Communications (NFC), which is not supported on the N1, so 2.3.5 is not really necessary.
