MyTouch 4G and Captivate - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently using a captivate on the ATT network but considering moving to T-Mobile.
As some of you may know the captivate is pretty much unbrickable when it comes to flashing custom roms and recovering back to factory state. Before I get the MyTouch 4G, I wanted to know how hard is it to brick this phone?
Also how comparable is this phone to the captivate when it comes to graphics? Can it play all of the android market apps without any lag right now?
Thanks for any answer.

As long as you dont hose the bootloader, its pretty damn hard to brick these phones.
and yes, it can handle all market apps probably better than the captivate. Samsungs RFS is horrible, and lagfixes are a joke.

What better than samsung vibrant?

Hey.
I am thinking of getting android phone, and samsung vibrant is on my list, but I want to know what is better than vibrant at the moment?
Any other andriod phones better than vibrant at the moment that has good features?
I cannot afford Nexus S at the moment as its very expensive without any contract.
Thanks.
You may find other phones that people claim is faster, such as g2 or mytouch 4g or something...but I have yet to see another android phone with the amazing gpu performance of the vibrant..plus, with a few tweaks, this phone is faster than lightning...
But to be fair, Samsung support for the phone isn't all the best. Don't expect timely updates and such. However, our dev community here is awesome and with it, you probably wont miss support from Samsung...

Vibrant and Nexus S are bascily the same, a bit different.
umm... i really can't think of any other phone. Vibrant has filled my needs, but if you plan NOT to put a custom rom on it, or Root it... then... dont get the vibrant, samsung has quit on us, and the devs are the only reason this section is alive.
I dont know how to root or what roms are, etc, but I was waiting for 2.2 I heard it had good features.
So but now that 2.2 is not coming out are there any roms that can fill that gap?

YES.
If your looking for a 2.2, there are some awesome ROMS.
Nero, Ginger Clone, and Axura are the most popular currently.
They DO have a FEW bugs, but they're pretty small ones.
there has been a LEAKED froyo(2.2) rom, if you want a stock one, there is one.
I think you'd love a Vibrant. Before you get irritated, when you buy it, open it right there, and in front of the guy who sold it to you check if the GPS works, some new ones still don't work, and if it doesn't ask for another, and another if you have to, but be sure to make the GPS work wether you use GPS or not, you'll get annoyed later.
Also, if you don't know how to root or flash custom ROMs, there are PLENTY of EASY STEP-by-STEP tutorials to do it.
Just get the nexus S if you don't want to root. Bad side of it is it doesn't have a external storage.

Yup no ext SD was a definite deal breaker for me. Other then that it's a very nice phone.
The mt4g is a great phone for the casual person. But i wouldnt trade my vibrant for it, Im gonna wait for the fabled galaxy s2.
Fear the beard...
I actually went ahead and pulled the trigger on getting a Nexus S today. I love my Vibrant and I'm keeping it as I've had loads of fun with it because of all the community support. Macnut R14 was and is still my rom of choice with the phone and it's very smooth and not that buggy at all - and my GPS works.
Having said that, the reason I got the NS is due to direct Google support. Considering Gingerbread is out now and Samsung has yet to deliver Froyo to 3 of the 4 GS models stateside, I finally made the decision to drive something I know is going to get timely updates. If you're not going to root get the Nexus the trade offs make it about even. If you are going to root then the Vibrant could a strong choice considering what it has over the NS. I know I'll still be here flashing roms for my Vibrant even though I have a different phone to play on now.
If I didn't mind being on Sprint, I'd say the Sprint HTC EVO is better in some respects than the Vibrant. No other phones come to mind. I also still consider the Vibrant to be the best Android powered phone on T-Mobile ATM. FYI, I don't like phones with built-in physical keyboards so I tend to immediately rule those out. The lack of both the SD card slot and gorilla glass on the screen are deal killers for me on the Nexus S when comparing it to the Vibrant. The Nexus S offers nothing I want which I don't already have (EXT4 file system) or won't get in the future (Gingerbread). Timely updates aren't worth it to me.

For the price of the Vibrants right now this is the best bang for your buck stock or not. Fast processor, very customizable, 14gig storage STOCK with an external slot to increase that to only the limits of microSD cards.
My opinion is the casual user will not notice a difference in 2.1 2.2 or 2.3 aside from some cosmetics which can be imitated by many free market apps. Casual user.....
For the non casual user I will reiterate what my fellow enthusiast have already pointed out. We are blessed with some REALLY talented ROM developers that have been nothing but generous with their time and efforts.
I have never gone to a manufacturer for support on any phone I have owned. Majority of the time the communities solve the problem 1000x faster.
I would also like to point out I am not biased to this phone because I own it lol, it just happens to be the one I own currently. I for one LOVE my Vibrant. I have had a g1, my touch, every iphone and some in between.
I have only used two other android phones: the Mytouch 4G and the G2. Both are hands down a much better user/android experience than the Vibrant i now own.
The only thing that makes me think about keeping the vibrant over these other phones is that the vibrant kicks their asses when it comes to audio playback, the quality is noticeably better.
Appart from that, battery life on the vibrant is lame, the screen is big but the colors are off, withes are actually blueish. The stock software is horrible, touchwiz is a joke, seriously, so is the fact that this thing still runs 2.1.
For the more that people talk about the speed of this phone, i found it to be incredibly laggy and slow, from apps to file transfers.
Ironically the best thing about the vibrant is that it made me use my phone a lot less than the Mt4G or the G2. The G2 made me a very anti-social person.

vibrant or nexus S
Currently have the iphone 4 from a trade I did with my nexus one. Going back to android! Stuck on which to choose the nexus S or the vibrant. Seems as if both phones are pretty much the same. Save a few hundred with the vibrant or go with the S
Thanks for all the answers, I got the Vibrant!!!!
Now, when it arrives, then need to do some reading on roms, flash, root, etc as I dont know anything about them....
To get full flash in browser, and to get GPS to work fully (if it does not work, hopefully it will) what ROM is the best to flash? And by flashing that rom, will I lose any of the stock rom features?
Because my vibrant will have stock 2.1

I said the same thing to the T-Mobile Reps. a couple months ago The phone has actually changed the way I use smartphones. Before I was always tethered to my smartphone, now I have to make sure I don't forget to pick it up when I go or leave some place. I don't really use it that much. It's just not fun. I tend to carry my notebook with me, now, and of course my ZuneHD
I think my next phone will almost certainly have a full QWERTY slide-out. Swipes way of automatically adding typos to the dictionary is annoying. I spent like an hour last night just removing typos that kept registering as words when trying to send texts and stuff.
My thought is that the Vibrant is the best media device on the market right now. Great codec support, best screen, excellent storage.
I've considered buying the Nexus S to use as a phone and to keep the Vibrant like it's an iPod Touch, just a movie/music/game device.

[Q] Should I get the Epic 4G?

I'm still in the market for a new phone, and had my heart set on the Epic from the start. However, when I started delving deeper into the different phones, I started feeling apprehensive toward the Epic.
Why I want it:
Video/picture quality seems better than the other phones I was looking at
5row QWERTY
Non-smudgy back plate
Good stock SD card
Super AMOLED
Why I'm apprehensive toward it:
It's running 2.1 and people think Samsung is abandoning the phone
Ideally, I wanted a 4 or 4.3in display
To get 2.2 and faster speeds, I'd have to use a ROM -- I have no idea how to do it, and I also don't like the themes most of the community ROMs have.
The other phones I was interested in were the EVO 4g, the Nexus S, the Droid X, and maybe another Galaxy S phone.
So, my question to the Epic 4g community: How do you like the phone? Have you tried any of the other phones I've listed? Am I going to get shafted by Samsung and never get a 2.2 update, or is it just as easy to flash the leaked 2.2?
I lovemy epic. Greatest phone I've had. It does everything I want. I got the epic to future proof myself.
Itsvery easy to flash the leaked froyo. You don't even gotta be rooted! Also, theleaked froyo is bascally a release candidate, being almost complete but still lacking little things like bluetooth audio out.
If those are the phones on our short list, get the epic. When samsung finally releases official final froyo, those phones will have nothing on the epic.
If you can't wait for froyo, then a5least get a new dualcore phone so you can be sure you won't be left behind

Agreed. The epic is absolutely fantastic. Even on 2.1 it's vastly better than the evo, which my girlfriend has. The nexus s however looks great and if that was on sprint it'd be a toss up for me. Don't listen to all the nay saying going on right now. Samsung easily had the best camera, screens and processor combo available for the current gen. Once you go oled it'd be hard to go back. I just recently flashed the new trulyepic 1.2 rom and imo, that's the way to go right now if want froyo. Runs fantastic.

Well the first question I'd have for you is what carrier are you looking at? Because you just listed a bunch of phones in the OP that are on different carriers. As far as the Epic is concerned, I love it ... it has a LOT of issues, including Samsung's Froyo delay that you mentioned, but it's still one of the fastest phones out there (with a kick ass GPU mind you). Again, it depends on what you need. If you don't need QWERTY, then you might want to look at the Evo as that is one of the best supported phones on the market (in terms of the dev community).

The carrier isn't important to me. It relies solely on the phone -- although, I think Sprint has one of the cheapest plans.
If trade my epic for a nexus s any day... The screen on both if my epics became loose after weeks and I harshly use the keyboard anyway
Sent from my Nexus S with a keyboard
I guess it really depends on what you are coming from. I was a die hard blackberry user.... *throws up a bit* came directly to and specifically waited for the epic after seeing several inferior android phones but knew it was where I wanted to settle once I was able to dig deeper helping a few friends mod.
Point being if it will be the first phone of this caliber, I think you will love the epic and there is no reason not to in most cases as the phone is blazing, couple it with some of the mods from the devs here.... it will be sweet. That being said, the same would likely apply to most of the other phones in your list.

Only if you want a keyboard. I think that's all the Epic has over the Evo at this point. Yes it's faster, yes the screen is better, but.. Samsung support is terrible, while 2.1 runs fine and there are 2.2 leaks its still a sorry state to be in for a "flagship" phone.
IF you're interested in Roms.. go with an HTC. While the Evo is running a 98% functional CM7 and MIUI, and (Insert popular rom name here), the Epic's (while the developers are all awesome! This is NOT a knock) are more or less just customizations and ported applications with a breakthrough here and there such as EXT4.
Samsung is absolutely ridiculous "#neveragain". The keyboard skips letters, the GPS is moody and only works when it wants to, updates are pretty much MIA. Yes the epic is a little bit faster, with a more colorful screen, but at what cost.
Thanks to the Skippy keyboard I've become a professional on the onscreen keyboards and am highly considering a Evo off of Ebay while I can still sell the Epic for more. Maybe that gives you an idea of what it's like to own a Samsung.
</endrant> All rants aside... it's not a bad phone by any stretch of the imagination. Samsung is just better at products that don't need much support after release... like TV's...
The epic (galaxy s phone) has the best diplay and fastest GPU on the market as of posting this.

Questions: Coming from a Vibrant (SGS)

Hi MT4G owners, greetings from the Vibrant forums!
I got my Vibrant back in October and have been fairly happy with it, minus the GPS performance. It impacts more than you might think, and it's pretty embarassing when your gf's 4 year old Blackberry can get a lock and my brand new smart phone can't.....
So, I was in T-Mobile yesterday and got a great offer to straight trade my phone for another top-tier phone. She advised I go with the MT4G because it's really the only comparable phone to the SGS.
So here I am reaching out to you guys for opinions of the phone. My biggest gripe of the mytouch is the screen. I've grown used to the samoled on the Vibrant and I really enjoy how bright it gets in direct sunlight.
I love that the mytouch actually has a flash on the camera, FFC, and HSPA+. What are some of the other subtleties that I am missing that makes it a great phone?
Oh, and lastly - i've greatly enjoyed the community support that the sgs line enjoys, the Vibrant in particular. We get ROM after ROM of great products, and 2.2 was finally just released so its going to get better.
Has anybody else made the switch, or go in reverse from mytouch to Vibrant? I am just looking for opinions, so nobody is wrong, just help me make a decision! She also offered a big discount on the Vibrant 4G when it comes out.....but it would require signing a contract which makes my monthly bill go up for the same exact plan...
tl;dr: I have an offer from TMobile to switch to a MyTouch from my Vibrant due to GPS performance, need your opinions on your MyTouch and what makes it great, and what you don't like. Thanks!
Thanks in advance

All personal choice, I've gone from the iphone 3gs to the nexus one (kept for about a year) to an iphone 4, to the vibrant and finally the mytouch 4g.
Vibrant: SCREEN is very nice! no doubt about that, solid community support and overall a good phone. Cons yes the gps sucks! I ended up doing the hardware fix where you bend the metal to get better contact. Yes that did help but anytime I wanted to use the gps it still wouldnt lock, and had to to the tools test. Overall was happy with the vibrant but just wanted a new toy...
Mytouch 4g.....had to unlocked it for local carrier, rooted/unlocked within the first 20 minutes of having it. Played with the stock rom for awhile, pretty solid! It'll take awhile for the mytouch 4g to grow on you, make sure you check your screen for the good one. Trackpad is nice, screen is nice, very very nice feel to the phone, solid build. Roms are pretty good my main three are cm7, ice glacier and stock. Deleted the bloat ware since I can't use tmobile stuff.
Overall I like the mytouch 4g, can get 4g speeds with tmobile, but doesn't apply to me. Trackpad very nice, easy to work in clockwork recovery, NO VOODOO!!! easy to jump from rom to rom. You will miss the vibrant, but allow the mytouch 4g to grow on you. If its a free upgrade go for it! Community support is pretty good, few of us in here answering questions to help others out
mytouch4g is a good phone in my opinion. i mean the vibrant has had some pretty bad problems and i'm amazed at the forum support for the phone which is great. and i think its the same with the mytouch4g which also has great forum support. i know on the SGS 2.2 is in alpha for CM6, while the MT4G is already on 2.3 alpha /w 2.2 in RC(super stable) so it really just depends. though i can say that you wont be disappointed moving to the MT4G
I sold my Vibrant a couple of weeks ago and got a MT4G with good screen and I'm much happier. I've only tried the Gorillasens final so far with roms and it's really nice. Welcome to the club and a phone that works the way it's supposed to.

I had the vibrant also....put team whiskey froyo on it...over clocked..lag fixed...the works. GPS never worked ...even after hardware fix...did ffc mod too and the phone kept crashing...i had to get rid of it.
Got my MT4G and very very happy with it. Its a keeper for a while for sure.
Smoother..faster..everything works like it should. I've had great experience with HTC phones and its my preferred brand.

This is a common question, not surprisingly. Do a search and you will see the consensus from former Vibrant owners is in favor of the MT4G.
Ditched my FIFTH Vibrant for a MT4G (T-Mo made me the same offer)and have been as happy as can be with the change.
Vibrant w/o custom ROM=very flawed phone. MT4g=just works.
Vibrant fanatics will tell you that "if you flash xxx rom it fixes most of the problems, then it's a great phone". Well, you shouldn't have to fix what shouldn't be broken, and you certainly shouldn't have to take it apart to fix (GPS) or add (FFC) things.
The poster above did all those things and the phone was still broken. But, like myself and many other Vibrant exes, you can only take so much.
So, go for it. You won't regret it.
Yeah bro, Just getting 2.2. We gingerbreading around here. Lol. Serious though, if u look around in this section, you'll see many happy ex vibrant users. This phone will not disappoint.

Couldn't say it better! Played with the vibrant for about a month or two and it was flawed, the hardware with gps sucked, and 2.1 BLAH! Custom rom & voodoo plus the hardware gps fix (temporary fix) made it a solid phone. Oh and the screen, thats about it

After almost two years w/ Evo I switched to the Epic Touch 4G... :-(

My wife was complaining about her Blackerry Style and I had been toying with the idea of finding a used newer Wimax phone so I wouldn't use an upgrade becuase I want to wait for their LTE to come before I think about maybe leaving Sprint.
So I found someone on CL who was selling a "almost brand new" white ET4G for a pretty good price and I pulled the trigger. (of course I had ESN checked before I paid) I plan on giving this phone to my wife once LTE rolls out and that is when I may try to get the Evo LTE or the Samsung GSIII.
I am so used to flashing the Evo that the the Samsung flashing seems much more complicated. I do have a Galaxy Tab but I do not flash it often and only used Odin once to root it and flash CWM. I miss the ease of use/comfort of flashing my Evo and I kinda miss the phone as well, but I do like the Epic Touch. Phone is fast, screen is bright and huge and the phone is pretty good in the hands.
My wife is now transitioning from Blackberry to Andoid using the OG Evo on MikG3.1 (fnin sick ROM and has been my daily driver for months now). Hopefully she gets used to it but she hates typing on the screen instead of a real keyboard. I gave her a trial of Swiftkey X to see if she likes that keyboard better than the stock one. I had problems installing Swype beta for her, kept getting a parsing error even though Swype was working on the Evo when I was using it.
Anyway, I am going to miss the Evo forums but at least for now my wife is using it and I may still need to come back here.
At least you'll still be able to mess around with the good 'ol EVO. I'm in a similar situation...
My girlfriend has the Epic 4g touch, and as a hardcore evo fan, I admit that epic is pretty sweet Hardware is decent, and picture quality/screen are its main highlights, also pretty fast! I don't know its true potential because, for some reason, she hates the thought of rooting phones and i can't convince her otherwise...
Her upgrade comes sooner than mine and I want her phone to mess with til' i can get my hands on the LTE. I wish you luck and let us know how it goes
Well you still have access to the evo. I rooted an original Galaxy S, so I know what you mean using Odin. I just pre-ordered my S Galaxy S III...so after all the 'rumors' that I left...I finally will be, lol.

Invest the $5 in mobile Odin pro by chainfire one of the best $5 u can spend on this phone, you won't be tethered to the PC to use Odin unless you're stuck in a bootloop or your phone won't fully boot into android. It works great for flashing the el26+cwm kernel for flashing ICS or AOSP roms. I upgraded to the ET4G from the Evo and upgraded my 2nd line to the Evo from the intercept. The ET4G is hands down the best non LTE device on sprint. Its easy to root, has tons of development and has the best hardware specs over any of the other wimax devices. The new generation of phones with LTE are pretty much playing catch up with the sgs2 even tho they have better specs hardware wise, real world performance the devices are so close its not even worth the upgrade til the next gen of LTE phones roll out. I'm personally waiting til the next nexus is announced or the LG Eclipse 4g LTE comes out this 3rd/4th quarter. I'm personally boycotting HTC for their half ass dev support, I will never buy anything made by Crapple, so my next device will be Samsung, nexus or LG since I also dislike Motorola because of their locked up bootloaders similar to HTC. If you have any questions about the ET4G feel free to PM me and ill be glad to help you out or point you to someone/somewhere to find your answers.
We are legion, for we are many.
I have one of these that I use at home for an XBMC remote (total overkill, I know). I actually really like the screen, and think it looks better than the Evo's. Also, Cyanogenmod 7 really rocks on this particular phone, super solid and extremely fast to maneuver around and open/close apps, etc...highly recommend you try this ROM first.

Debating...

Hi all. Just wanted to grab some thoughts of the community here. I am debating between picking up this phone or going with the Dinc 4G. I am on the verizon network with an OG Dinc right now, rooted but just running a plain stock rom, with maybe a different radio or something...its been a long time since I've loaded a different rom lol.
I'm fairly simple. I want a fast phone, I want to be able to change roms, and I want to be able to tether. Right now I run wireless tether. Hell I am not even sure if its needed anymore with the new share everything data plans, don't they have hotspot included? At any rate I have unlimited data which I am sure I will lose during the switch to 4g, but I really don't use much more than a couple GB of data a month anyways.
I don't mind stock roms, in fact I could probably just leave this stock if I can use hotspot with no additional charge, aside from I do like to strip down the bloatware verzon loves to put on their phones. So does anyone think I should go with this phone over the Dinc 4g that has the unlocked bootloader and all that? The main reason I am even considering it is because I am slightly disappointed that the screen on the new dinc is only 4 in. I was hoping for something bigger like a 4.3. I have yet to play with this phone so maybe 4.8 is just too damn big, I dunno but it kinda intrigues me more than the inc and has a faster proc, etc.
As for sense vs touchwiz?...is that what the galaxy has? anyways as far as that goes, I like sense more than just vanilla android. My wife is using a continuium (ugg) and I rooted that for her for the WT option, so if that interface is similar to this one, it kinda feels a little like sense and a lot less like vanilla.
Any thoughts are appereciated. I don't post much around here because I am pretty much a newb to all this kinda stuff. But thanks!
Get this phone. There are already a lot of Roms out and quite a few coming like aokp and aosp, you know roms with No touchwiz. Battery life is amazing with blazer rom and just all in all It's the best phone I've ever had. Screen is amazing, real light weight. I've already had so Amy people be like OMG What phone is that It's beautiful! Plus the built in features like eye stay and direct call are awesome! Go get it, you'll love it.

I had a Dinc too.I didn't get the Dinc 4g. (bleh Verizon wanted branding over the HTC One series), but the big pro isan unlocked bootloader with Dinc 4G. The Verizon S3 does not have an unlocked bootloader. So all ROMS will be based off stock. no radios, no kernels, UNLESS someone can unlocked the bootloader (unlikely) Soooo, If you just want to run rooted apps, (tether, titanium etc) don't mind stock ROMs then go with the S3. I got used to the screen size quick.
Hope this helps
