How to change onscreen keyboard? - Desire HD General

New to the forum and to smart phones as well. I got this phone here on Okinawa, Japan, so it a Japanese model. I downloaded the English manual off of the HTC site, and in reading it had instructions on how to change the keyboard from the "phone keypad" to the "qwerty" layout. Unfortunately the instructions from the manual of HOME > MENU, and tap Settings > Language & keyboard > Touch Input--is not accurate for my phone. "Select language", and "iWnn IME" are the only options when I get to the language and keyboard step.
Is there another method I can use to get to the settings? Perhaps I should download an app that would change my keyboard...which one?
Thanks again from this newbie!

Have you tried flashing it with an English ROM??

That would have been my guess
additionally have you tried installing the HTC.IME keyboard??

try swipe or 8 pen

Found an answer. I went to my company systems office and found a guy who has an older 'droid. He looked at mine and found that it didn't have an English keyboard loaded, besides the telephone version. He loaded the "Gingerbread keyboard" off of the Android market. Seems to have fixed it for me. Boy do I have some learning to do! Thanks for your help!

disabling XT9 input

Hi all.
Is there a way to disable XT9 text input on the mini? I've tried all sorts of stuff but the bar with the suggestion words keep coming up. I would like to use the plain ABC input instead of always having to correct my text entries, especially given that I use loads of technical words and the dictionary keeps wanting to correct them...
Thanks for you help!
look at settings - region and text (10) - text input (2)- text input options (3) and here turn everything off.
i have not an english version and do not know the exact namings, therfore the numbers. hope it helps.
thanks
thanks. phone's not with me right now. will try when I get home...
Wonderful! Just thought that there were some settings on the keyboard itself that would allow for the T9 disabling but was wrong! Can now do everything that I want, thanks!
Hi,
I have the Dutch version but when I go to country settings -> region, I only can select a country.
I don't see the text options.
Same problem, I'd like to switch it off.
Any help is appreciated!
Regards:
Daan
no no no. Actually as birgit123 said it, it's not the "region" in the Start-Settings. You'll be able to access the "region and text" on the last tab at the bottom, going all the way to the right where you see Personalize as the first option. Scroll through there and you'll find what birgit123 said.
Hi, it sounds so simple and I'm a user of the Touch Diamond 2 for over a year now, completely knowing how to use and configure it but my wife got the HD Mini now and it's different.
Here some screens comparing my Diamond 2 with the HD Mini. As you can see I can switch off XT9 at the Diamond 2 but proceeding exaclty the same way on the Mini, I don't see the region and text option????
Can anybody help me out here, maybe a screenshot of a HD Mini for dummies (because that's how I feel now )
Once again, thanks for all the help!

Missing Swedish letters in keyboard

This one mostly goes out to my fellow Swedish forum dwellers but if anyone else has a solution please chime in.
My brother just got himself a Galaxy S, partly on my recommendation. He bought it from a Swedish (we presume) web shop but he seems to be lacking swedish characters from they key map. He is not using Swype but the Samsung keyboard, he changed the phones language layout to Swedish but that wasn't enough.
If you check the keyboard language, its set to "automatic" but he cannot - apart from me, set it to Swedish.
This seems very strange, is it an import phone? And if so - can he add the Swedish language somehow?
This seems strange to me as well. Although I am not an expert, I can say that on my SGS bought from a Norwegian internet store, the samsung keyboard was included with the Norwegian layout. So, I guess, it should be the same for the Swedish phones.
I just downloaded the "Scandinavian Keyboard" on the Market by Trygve Aaberge. It's free and you can also get a dictionary if you want.
1. Open the Android Market App & search for "Scandinavian Keyboard"
2. Download the one by Trygve Aaberge
3. Once installed head over to the keyboard settings
(Settings -> Locale and text //English OS)
4. Enable Scandinavian keyboard and go in its settings right below
5. Select desired language for the "Keyboard layout".
6. A bit further down you can also find "Download dictionary".
7. Choose the dictionary language you want as it sends you to the Android Market with correct filter/search
8. Once installed head all the way back to the Scandinavian keyboard settings.
9. Enable dictionaries and select the language you want.
Now in any field to input text just hold-press/touch until you get the option of choosing "Input Method" and select the keyboard you want. Android will keep using the latest chosen keyboard.

[Q] Input language

I rooted my kindle fire and the only thing that is missing is a keyboard in my language. I did the trick to change the input language on the stock keyboard but it doesn't have the Greek language. I installed a different keyboard but I cannot find.how to.change the keyboard. Is there a way to change the keyboard or install my language to the.stock keyboard? Thank you.
you can change the input language on the stock keyboard allthrough the options are not displayed in settings:
there is a app called "any cut" on the market
in any cut you can select new shortcut - activity - and select input languages or so - can't tell exactly cause mine is german
then you have a shortcut on kf and you can select your language
btw. with playing around with the activities you'll find some other settings too (accounts and settings, ...)
maybe you want to take a look here too:

When I wrote I did the trick, I meant I did what you just said but my language is not included. Is there a way I can add my language to that list?

Install a kbd with your language (Swift and anysoft both have Greek). Then long press in any text entry box. A popup will show. Select 'Input method' and then choose your new kbd. It will then default to the new kbd.

[Q] General questions

Hello, i have a few general questions, probably about android itselft:
1. is there a way to change blue color of battery and everything else that goes blue to pink/magenta?
2. How can i make "home screen" to rotate to landscape mode?
3. How can i have czech qwerty keyboard or US keyboard with suggestions in czech language?
4. Is it possible to have multiple speech inputs? Czech and english and switch between them? So i can search play store for real racing ie.
5. Is there a way to stop wifi networks from jumping in list? When i go to pub and want to connect to its wifi in keeps switching positions with other networks and it is quite annoying a uncomfortable for me.
1-2 - > i dont think you can do this on stock rom... You'll have to root and find a custom rom that support this

1 - Cannot be done on stock rom.
2 - The only way to do this on stock is to either use : UltimateRotation
Or
Use a Launcher like ApexLaunher or NovaLauncher
3 - I would get an App called : SwiftKey - You can have multiple languages at once, and it supports the most languages I have ever seen in a keyboard. (The link is to the free one, there is a paid version)
4 - Again the multiple speach can be done in SwiftKey, including dictator multiple speach along with the multi-language keyboards.
5 - Not a clue
Hope this helps.
1 is about the theme, I would be surprised you can't do this on the stock ROM once rooted but you have to find where this setting is (or in a config file, or in an apk, something like that). And gooood luck for this, probably that a themer would know.
For the language things, maybe you could create your combination in the advanced settings -> personalized style? Not sure your language is there though... If not, I was using ICS keyboard from the market that supports many languages and there is now a JB version, maybe worth a try.
About the WiFi, you can enter the network's infos manually by clicking on the + in the WiFi config. Not exactly the answer you wanted but a workaround...
My two cents that will hopefully be helpful.
Sent from my Nexus 7 still stock but not for long!
Pretty much everything been answered. I would really vouch for SwiftKey as well, I'm using it for dual languages as well and it picks them up nicely without having to even press a button to switch them like with swype for instance. But I guess if you want a different keyboard for Czech you'd have to switch that tho.
Regarding the wifi, I do believe that once you've remembered a network it will stay at the top...
Is there some way to send suggestion about keyboard to google? I would like to use OOB keyboard. And many people in CZ are used to qwerty.
EDIT: found it in language and input > advanced settings > custom input styles - so probably what johnride meant
Also you cen heve two voice inputs by default - just clik on language when using voice input. Tough i found out my english is really crap for voice recognition.
Still i would like to send suggestions to google about the wifi list, as hitting the right network is not so easy when it is changing under you fingers constantly
Yeah that's what I meant... I am on a french system and I translated wrong sorry!

Words underlines in red since update to lollipop

Since I updated to lollipop, every word I type that isn't typed in English is underlined in red. This is really annoying since I usually type in Dutch. My phone language is English though. Is there an easy solution for this problem? Can I switch this feature off in some way?
Same problem

Hey, I registered just to give you an answer. I have the same exact problem, only I don't type usually in Dutch but in Serbian. My phone language is also English. I'm on Lollipop, I9505.
I found out a way to stop this spell check, and it's only possible, as it seems to me, to change your phone language. I've changed it from English to Serbian, even though I don't like it that way, and underlining has stopped. I thought that it would start to underline English typed words, but it didn't. So, if you consider that an easy and acceptable solution, there you go. I'm still looking for a way to use my phone in English and type in Serbian without that red underlining, just like I used to do before on KitKat. It doesn't make sense to have to change phone language when this is a problem that is related to keyboard settings. If someone knows how to fix this without changing phone language I'd love to know a way to do that.
Hi!
I have the very same problem as I speak with my friends in 4 different languages. After a lot of search I found the solution to completely disable the red underlining: selecting "Alphabet" (QUERTY) as your keyboard language, as I describe below:
1 Download the "Google Keyboard" app from the google Play
2 Go to keyboard settings - in lollypop it is under Settings > My device > Language and Input
3 Enter into "Google Keyboard" to show the google keyboard settings, and then go into "Languages"
4 Disable "Use system language" and ONLY enable "Alphabet (QUERTY)" from the list of languages (you will probably find it between Afrikaans and Arabic)
5 Go back again to Settings > My device > Language and Input, enter "Default" and select "Alphabet (QWERTY)" as default

Hey, thanks! That is a fine solution, but only if I wish to use Google keyboard without predictive text and auto replace options since they are gone when selecting "Alphabet (QWERTY)".
I'm quite used to Samsung keyboard and I like having text prediction and auto replace, so I'm still looking for a solution in terms of switching off that annoying spell check but with using Samsung keyboard. :fingers-crossed:
If anyone's still looking for a fix, there's a way - just do the factory reset and the red underlining will be gone. I just did.
