i have a few technical questions about voodoo
1. i recently was unable to load widgets after restart, and i couldnt install apps, my available memory was 0.00. i got it fixed. my question is, is this related to voodoo? what causes this. how can i prevent it in the future?
2. lets say im on a voodoo kernel and i disable lag fix. if i dont flash a new kernel, i will still be using that voodoo kernel, just with rfs instead of ext4. it does not revert to a stock or default kernel?
3. if im right about question 2, and i think i am, do the sound enhancements require the lag fix to work? i wouldnt think they would, if it works on one filing system why wouldnt another?

You must have installed a non-Voodoo kernel over a Voodoo one. When you install a Voodoo kernel, it converts the file system(s) to EXT4 from RFS. If you then flash a non-Voodoo kernel, it can't read any of the EXT4 file systems because it doesn't support EXT4.
To avoid this problem in the future, you need to disable the lag fix and convert back to RFS *before* flashing a new kernel. You do this by going into the Voodoo options in the red Clockwork recovery, setting the lag fix to disable and rebooting. During the boot, it'll automatically convert back to RFS and then you can flash any kernel you like.

Correct, you'll still have the Voodoo kernel, it just won't be using EXT4.

I just tried disabling the lag fix, and the sound enhancements still seem to function, so it would appear they're not dependent on the lag fix being enabled.

i havent touched nonvoodoo kernels since i made that post on ac. i was thinking the same thing, so i disabled the lag fix, flashed a kernel i KNEW was voodoo, reenabled the lag fix. still had 0.00 available mem and widgets wouldnt load after a restart. for the trouble shooting part of the post on ac i flashed a nonvoodoo kernel over a voodoo kernel on purpose, and my phone wouldnt boot. the fix was simple for that. i got completely differant results this time. i KNOW i did not flash a nonvoodoo kernel over a voodoo kernel. i went through every kernel on my sd card and NONE of them are voodoo. just to be sure, after i got phone fixed i flashed everysingle kernel on my sd card, and they all worked fine.
is this chris3d? i couldnt get numbers for my name either.

OK. So I'm a little new to Android but I've been reading as much as possible. So far I've rooted, installed CWM and tried out a couple of Dirrk's and jt's flashes.
I originally flashed jt's voodoo kernel with ext4 lagfix and then a couple of Dirrk's 1200's. At this point, I'm running Dirrk's SV1200 kernel.
I'm a little confused about this lagfix thing. At the moment, I don't have the disable_lagfix file in my /sdcard/voodoo directory but, I thought I read that the lagfix was no longer necessary?
I also see jt's clean ROM which doesn't have a kernel. Please forgive my ignorance as I'm still learning but:
1. Should I have a disable_lagfix file in my voodoo directory?
2. Should I flash jt's clean ROM and then Dirrk's 1200 kernel overtop of it?
Lastly, I keep running into the damn market download issue. It seems that google talk won't start and from what I've read, this could be my problem; however, it looks like the only real fix is to do a factory restore. I've done this once and it happened again.
What is the recommended setup for the Fascinate at this point??
A big thanks to all the excellent devs on this board. You guys ROCK!
I don't know anything about the market issue, but my husband's phone had the Gtalk issue once and I discovered that in the main settings menu for time and date, the box that says to get it from the network was unchecked. As soon as I checked this box, Gtalk and everything else worked again. Actually thinking back, I think the market downloads didn't work either with this box unchecked........

Hi ktez,
thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately, mine is already set to automatic.
Sorry that didn't help - hope you can find a solution!

At this point I'm gonna flash jt's clean rom and then try Dirrk's LV1250 kernel. I'm hoping his advice to lower the sampling rate will fix the LV issues I was having.
You have to add the disable_lagfix file.

You mean just to do the clean rom and new kernel or leave it there permanently?
You add it and reboot your phone. Flash what you want and then take it off and reboot if you are still running a lagfix kernal..

Ahh...see...there is where I am confused. Is a voodoo kernel the same as a lagfix kernel? For example, I'm going to flash Dirrk's LV1250 Kernel. Will I need the disable_lagfix file for this kernel?
I am confused now. Yes voodoo is a lagfix. If you flashed a voodoo kernal you can flash other voodoo kernals. If going to a non voodoo kernals you will need to disable_lagfix
VooDoo Fascinate
Right so then...voodoo=lagfix. Got it. I'm staying with a voodoo kernel so I shouldn't need the file.
The reason I became confused is because I read a post here that seemed to indicate that lagfix would no longer be necessary b/c of voodoo. Perhaps I read it wrong but, if they're the same thing then the statement doesn't make sense...or...I'm just dumb :-/

The lagfix they're referring to here is Ryan's ext2 lagfix that was available prior to voodoo. With voodoo arriving for the fascinate, the old lagfix became obsolete.
Voodoo is also a lagfix, but it is usually referred to as just voodoo.

Just read this thread.
Now I'm dizzy.
The apk in THIS thread may be helpful as well. You can open the app and push the button to disable the voodoo lagfix. Then to a complete reboot, and then flash whatever you wish. Do your backups with the lag fix disabled.
Open the app, re-enable the voodoo, and reboot again. easy enough.
You may know already, but be extremely patient during reboots when you have turned voodoo on or off, as they can take awhile. Do not pull your battery in panic. lol.

Thanks Daswolven. I'm getting better at this now. Once I got past my market issues, all is golden.
Ok, so I have done some reading and I think I want to make the switch to voodoo. Before I do I want to get some questions figured out, really more or less I just want to confirm with myself that I have the process down.
1. Installing a voodoo kernel (for the first time) is no different than installing a nonvoodoo kernel correct? Backup, boot into CWM and flash using the install .zip from SD card?
2. Once I'm on voodoo, I can flash any voodoo kernel over the other but if I want to flash a nonvoodoo kernel I need to create a FILE in the SD/voodoo folder called disable_lagfix?
3. Once I'm on voodoo if I want to create a nandroid using Rom Manager do I need to disable voodoo?
4. When would it be necessary to TOTALLY remove voodoo?
Thanks!
1. In a word, yes. Doing so will take longer than flashing a non-Voodoo kernel, as it will take some time to do the filesystem conversion for the lagfix. There will be a robotic female voice that will periodically announce progress updates, along with ETAs to completion. Please be patient and DO NOT pull your battery while this is occurring, otherwise you will be getting very familiar with ODIN very soon.
2. Yes, to install a non-voodoo kernel, you have to disable the Voodoo lagfix first. Creating that file is one way to do it, but preferably you would boot into the red CWM (via three finger salute) and select the menu option to disable the lagfix. The red CWM is installed on your phone along with any Voodoo kernel, and should always be used over green CWM from Rom Manager while Voodoo is enabled. If you ever boot into green, which loads from the update.zip file on your sdcard, go to Advanced and Reboot to Recovery to reboot into the proper red CWM.
3. See answer to number 2. Use red CWM for this, as green CWM can't read the ext4 filesystem and will not work properly. As long as you use red CWM, no disabling is necessary for nandroid backups.
4. Only time I know of that you would want to is if you decide you want to revert back to the stock ROM, or a non-voodoo kernel. Other than that, it would be best to leave it enabled, due to the benefits it offers.
As far as what kernel to use, right now I would recommend Adrynalyne's Voodoo kernels, dated 1/18 or later, as they have the DL09 CD-ROM mounting bug fixed. I myself am running the 1/18 undervolted Voodoo kernel. Also, just FYI, I would personally recommend switching to a custom ROM as well. I enabled Voodoo on a stock DL09 ROM, and then wiped and installed the DL09 Super Clean 0.4 ROM from Adrynalyne (I backed up personal apps with Titanium Backup first, and restored on the new ROM). The performance boost is absolutely phenomenal over the stock experience with this configuration. There's almost no lag on anything anymore. I still see a slight amount of lag when installing apps, but it's hardly anything compared to stock (installing apps on the stock ROM made the phone grind to a screeching halt).
Thank you very much for the help! I've been running black hole 3.0 for a long time now, just wanted to finally make the move to voodoo since it seems to be the way yo go.

Okay, duh. If I'd taken half a second to read the ROM ad in your sig, I would have noticed that. Oh well. Yeah, you should get another fairly decent speed boost out of Voodoo, and you should enjoy the color fix as well.

An important note here is that you have to reboot *after* disabling the lag fix, since the actual conversion is done on the next boot following the change of the setting.
So the process is:
1- Set to disable the lag fix, either by manually creating the "disable lagfix" file on your SD card or by choosing the setting in red Clockwork.
2- Reboot your phone to allow it to do the conversion back to an RFS file system.
3- Then install your desired non-Voodoo kernel, through ROM manager or directly through Clockwork.
also note that the kernels just got updated for us with voodoo sound enhancements which are amazing.

Well I don't plan on flashing anything other than a voodoo kernel so I'm good as far as flashing over it. To disable just use the option from red cwm and I'm good there. What is the system disable tho? I forget the exact wording.

I think I want to make the plunge too. Right now I am running Blackhole 2.4 w/various non-voodoo kernels and my performance is fine but battery life is terrible. I have a couple of questions.
I'd like to try witching to the DL09 Super Clean 0.4 ROM / Radio and a voodoo kernel. Should I install the ROM or kernel first ?
What is this three finger salute to get into Red CWM? Can someone elaborate?
Is voodoo any better or worse for battery life? I havent had much luck with battery since going to DJ05 with any nonvoodoo kernel. Tried jt, ady, imnuts, etc.
Shouldn't matter whether you install the ROM or kernel first, though I did the kernel first, fwiw. Just make sure that you install them separately. I would probably recommend installing a Voodoo kernel first, let it do its thing, and reboot into your current ROM, then wipe and install the new ROM.
The three-finger salute is to hold power+volup+voldown from a powered off state, until the Samsung logo appears and then flashes off and back on once. That will boot into red CWM, which is now installed on your phone along with the Voodoo kernel. When you have Voodoo enabled, do everything in red CWM. Stay out of green CWM until after you disable the Voodoo lagfix, if you ever want to.
I haven't done a lot of testing, I'm very please with battery life on my phone with DL09 Super Clean and Adrynalyne's undervolted Voodoo kernel (use the latest 1/21 version, which has the cdrom bug from DL09 fixed). Using that combination, I updated my PRL and did a battery stats wipe after the phone was fully charged in a powered off state, and I have no problem making a full day with what I consider to be fairly heavy use, though some may deem it moderate use. With light use, I could make two days, which I've done a couple times.

To get to Red Clockwork, you need to power on the phone by holding both volume buttons and the power button. That's what they mean by the three finger salute.
You can also type 'reboot recovery' via adb or the terminal app to get to Red Clockwork.
You can NOT get there via ROM Manager.

Though not recommended for the sake of avoiding confusion, technically you can. Rom Manager will reboot you into green CWM, which it loads from the update.zip file on your SD card, and from there, you can go to the Advanced menu and choose Reboot to Recovery, and it will then reboot again, this time into red CWM.
I think my phone may be bricked when I turn it on all I get is the samsung title and it does nothing else. I had just recently updated it with the voodoo with lag fix from rom manager and then this morning flashed it with one of the super fast kernals and that is when it rebooted and never advanced past the samsung logo.
I tried to get the stock .tar form drop box but keep getting a 404 error and I am unable to get that or follow the link to remove the voodoo, that link just goes to just a jumble of symbols with nothing to download. Again sorry if this is covered somewhere else in here but I have looked and tried to fix this but not even the cw recovery works. Oh in case you can't tell I am a newb .
You can't flash non voodoo over voodoo. I'm sure someone will chime in shortly. I don't know how to fix it. Sorry

I believe you will have to completely reset your phone to stock with stock kernel/rom etc and you will lose all your data. It will essentially be a new phone again. It will work though.
You can flash non voodoo over voodoo as voodoo uses a different filesystem that is not 'seeable' by non voodoo kernels.

Ok I click on the first link and the page just brings up gibberish, like I said I am a newb so don't flame me too bad please, what am I supposed to do with that first link?
Don't click the link. Right-click, save as.
I am unfortunately unclear on the finer points of recovering from a voodoo misadventure, but that first link is intended for voodoo4 and perhaps catastrophic circumstance. I believe you would have voodoo5 if you installed recently via RM, but someone should correct me if I am wrong.
I haven't ever needed voodoo, so I have yet to go down any of these roads. However, if I were in your situation, I would try to clear the lagfix with red cwm first and leave my MBR alone until I was convinced I had to overwrite it. Once you are back to an RFS file system, put on a nonvoodoo file system that matches your base band and/or odin to stock as needed.
In any case, you are embarking on quite a crash course.
You should just be able to flash another voodoo kernel, then all will be fine. If you decide to flash a non voodoo kernel after that, disable the voodoo within red CWM, reboot to let the file system revert, then flash your new kernel
Thanks Kevin that worked just fine, I had to use a different sd card because somehow I write protected the one that came with the phone. It now boots up fine but I need to download everything again . But now I cannot access the market, press the icon and if flashes and then nothing.
So I am running the latest voodoo infused Superclean 2.1 and I found out something that saves a ton of time.
Say you downloaded a .zip file you need to flash in cwr. Before you had to create the disable folder/file, reboot, wait for it to convert back, reboot, flash zip file, remove disable file, reboot..wait for it to enable...
Now I find I can reboot, choose disable voodoo in the new cwr menu, go to zip file and flash it, then immediately toggle voovoo back to enabled, then reboot. No reboots in-between .....
I thought maybe it was a placebo and that voodoo wasn't actually reenabled, but after it booted I ran Linpack and Quadrant and my scores were obviously voodoo enabled scores....
So is it too good to be true?
you are referring to the original voodoo....... I believe the new voodoo source is voodoo 5.

Yes this had been around for some time now to make it easyer so yeah
First, you don't need to disable voodoo to flash 99% of stuff.
Second, disabling voodoo in the menu just creates the disable_voodoo file for you. you'd still have to reboot for it to disable (and wait through the conversion process) for it to be actually disabled. it's even on the screen. "voodoo actually: enabled"
so when you toggle it off, flash, and back on without rebooting, you aren't disabling it at all.
Really? You didn't know that? Voodoo 5 has been out for MONTHS now. This thread should be moved.
There hasnt been the need to disable voodoo to flash most things for months....since we have had voodoo recovery around Thanksgiving....not exactly a new revelation
You guys might be missing a couple points. This is the voodoo that comes packaged in Superclean2.1 EB01 that Adrenalyne just recently released. So no its not the old voodoo.
Another point someone made was 99% of things don't need voodoo disabled. A couple nights ago after installing SC2.1 I tried to install two different zip files. Both times I got an error. Error at Line 2 or Erie at line 4. IRC member said disable voodoo. So I did and all of a sudden they install fine. Ok. But then I see the voodoo toggle in CWR and I try it without revolting in-between and it works.
Maybe I'm not explaining this well.

voodoo5 is voodoo5...theres nothing new in terms of what we can do in recovery with the voodoo options that we couldnt do 2 months ago
ive flashed a ton of stuff in the last few days with voodoo enabled and had no issue or reason to disable/renable in cwr
Well voodoo 5 is new to me. I went from DH12 stock to EB01 Voodoo. Guess its just me learnin'
When jt first released voodoo for eb01 he didn't have cwm fixed yet. About 30 minutes later he released another eb01-voodoo.zip that was 5mb bigger (13mb) because it included a working cwm. Since then I have flashed and restored many times without error or disabling. SC2.1 voodoo includes voodoo5 and working cwm in the zip. If you're still getting an error in red cwm then maybe something is borked and you should start over. Hope this helps.
And all questions should be posted in general. You'll likely get plenty of responses there as well.

Just to clarify, the ONLY time you ever need to disable the lag fix after enabling it is if you intend to flash a non-Voodoo kernel of any kind. That's because a non-Voodoo kernel is incapable of reading the ext4 filesystem and will freak out when trying to boot. As long as you use the red CWM (which is compatible with ext4; green CWM, like non-Voodoo kernels is not), then you can do nandroid backups/restores and flash roms, themes, and other Voodoo kernels as much as you want without having to worry about disabling the lag fix.
Oh, and disabling and then enabling the lag fix from the CWM menus without rebooting does absolutely nothing, because it has to reboot in between to run the scripts that actually enable or disable the lag fix (this is when you hear the female robotic voice).

I've just switched to superclean 2.2 with voodoo, and it's my first time using it. I'm enjoying it so far, but I've already made the noob mistake of using rom manager to boot into recovery. Luckily it was only a boot animation, so the flash failed and no damage was done. Just have to get used to manually booting into red cwr.
But it's really good to know I can flash roms without disabling as long as I use red cwr. Didn't see a clear answer to that before. And I can flash other voodoo kernels as well without disabling? Say, for example, kaosinate rom and kernel? Been wanting to try that and jt's vanilla

I suggest you stop using voodoo since you clearly know nothing about how it works. As started by someone else, the only time you need to disable voodoo is when flashing a non voodoo kernel. The errors that you got are clearly install script errors. NOT because you're voodoo'd. So you and the person you got advice from know nothing about how voodoo works so I suggest you save yourself the trouble and stop using it.

I am not sure what is ment by"other" voodoo kernels. I thought voodoo 5 itself was the kernel. Now from reading these posts I have lost some understanding of voodoo. If there are other voodoo kernels, are those others voodoo 5 based? What normal kernel is the stock voodoo 5 based on?
Rocking dj05 and jt's voodoo 5
well, im going to try a voodoo rom but my question is. how do i activate voodoo? ive seen voodoo option on clockwork? do i go there activate it,reboot then install sc voodoo rom? or do i need to take more steps then these? and yes ive lookd around.thx
Hello,
Voodoo kernels have to deal with the way the file systems is formatted. Samsung devices are formatted with the RFS filesystem and what the voodoo lag fix does is replace it with the Linux standard of Ext4 filesystem.
With that in mind, it helps fix the I/O speeds (reads, writes) of the file system. The current working clockwork recovery has the voodoo menus with it. It is meant to be used with both voodoo and non voodoo kernels.
You only want to activate voodoo if you have already installed a voodoo kernel. I am not sure where you are at in flashing a rom for your phone but just let me know and I can help walk you through it.
If you use one of JT's rom you will need to flash a voodoo kernel if you before you install a voodoo rom. If you use one of adyns roms he packages the kernel with the rom so all you need to do is wipe data/cache etc and install the zip.
But if you ever stop using kernel you will need to completely remove voodoo before switching. Besides you get to hear a chick talk while the voodoo kernel is installing lol. Usually when I get swap away to a non voodoo kernel I flash through Odin to get back to stock.
