[Q] [q] htc magic 32a flashing - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hi
I am new to this forum and i am a total rookie in flashing roms.I have an htc magic 32a saphire with old radio and spl 1.33.0010 running android 1.5.While going through this forum I found many custom roms with my same radio whereas the spl is not listed. So my first question is whether any problem would occur if I flash my phone with rom having all requirements satisfying my phone's except the spl(or spl unlisted). And can you please tell me which rom will suite my phone without bricking it and improve its features. And is there any other things that I should check before flashing it.
Thanks

Just start flashing ROM's. If they don't work, you'll just get stuck in a bootloop, but it won't brick. You'll just have to pull the battery, boot back into recovery, and either flash another ROM or restore a backup. Make sure you make a nandroid backup before you start so you can restore the backup if a ROM doesn't work.

Always take a backup before you flash (nandroid backup). This is done in the recovery. What recovery version are you using?
Did you root your phone using a gold card method or another method?
What are your current settings?
On your device, enter the bootloader by trying one of the following
Turn off your device and while it is off hold down back while you press power.
Turn off your device and while it is off hold down volume down while pressing power

I rooted my phone using androot method. And on pressing back + power button the following details are displayed:
Sapphire pvt 32a S-ON
HBOOT 1.33.0010
CPLD-12
Radio 3.22.1017
Jun 2 2009
How do I check my recovery version?
My firmware version is 1.5.

HTC Magic won't boot after reset

Hi all,
yesterday I got my HTC Magic but there was Hero ROM on it already. First thing that I have done is a master reset (hold HOME+BACK and power On, then press trackball), because I like to start fresh with new fone, don't want to have old user settings and customization.
Now phone doesn't boot. It boot to the HERO logo but that's all. After HERO animation, it start loop, HERO animation starts again until the battery is removed.
Please help. How to solve this problem, I'm OK with HERO ROM on the Magic or with the original ROM.
So what to do? Thank you in advance.
You just need to re-flash the ROM. So find a Hero ROM or some other ROM that fits the board (either 32A or 32B), and put the update.zip on your SDcard and go to recovery mode and flash it.

Cheesebaron,
thank you for you replay. Can you give me some more instructions, I have Android phone for less then 24 hours (read: he is n00b) and which is procedure for flashing? How to go to recovery and start flashing part? Part for the zip package is OK, I can do that via micro SD card reader.
edit: And please if someone can post link for Hero or default Magic ROM that will work OK, it doesn't matter for first time, goal is that phone start working at all.
OK, so far I have managed to install various ROMs to my 32B Magic.
So I have some new questions:
On which ROM all features are 100% working?
Which ROM is closest to default ROM?
This is my config:
sapphire pvt 32b ship s-on g

Phone Stuck On HTC Magic Logo

So my phone is stuck on the HTC Magic logo. I don't think it is bricked because I can still access fastboot and Hboot no problem. This all started happening after I went to an older radio and back to the newer one. Now when I turn on my phone it is just stuck on the HTC Magic logo. Why is that? Thanks
By the way here is the info on my phone
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT - 1.76.2007 (SAPP50000)
CPLD - 12
RADIO - 6.35.10.18
What rom did you flash? If you flashed the cyanogen test5 make sure you flash the port file by pershoot or bcrook which will allow the rom to boot past the screen where you are stuck.
yeah I did want to flash the cyanogen t5 but when this happened all I was doing was changing my radio...anyways I've downloaded the bcrook port so what do I do from here?
it was radio rom 1.33.2010
Re-Read // Flash the old version of the radio that was working back on your device via fastboot.
Then if you backed up your phone with recovery -> Nandroid restore it to that point.
Read more into the radio versions and for what boards, and then flash the appropriate radio.
Should be all gravy from there~
_________
EDIT:
This happened to me and after a litte the phone completely stopped working and TMobile sent me a replacement phone.
Be careful when flashing radio's etc.
Does anybody ever read or use the search function?? I mean if they were to read the posts even. On the first page, there is like 3 posts with the same issue.

Flashed 32B on 32A HTC Magic

So I have bought a HTC Magic in Singapore about a year ago.
Some of the information about my phone before it got stucked in HTC Magic power-on screen:

I found a site that helped me to get my phone rooted as follow:

Soon after, I started searching for new ROM elsewhere and managed to update my SPL to 1.33.2007 and that's where problem starts to occur..
My phone get stucked on HTC Magic screen display forever.
I was eager to get this problem solved and have not done enough research before I got myself in a worse situation with the phone hbooted like this:
SAPPHIRE UNKNOWN 32A SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0006 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-2.22.19.26I

Now I can only enter hboot and fastboot.
Can somebody help me to at least get back to my original ROM? I don't wanna root my phone ever again..
Help please~
If you can get into fastboot you're fine. Just flash 32A radio/spl again and then the desired ROM. Old radio/spl - 1.33.X/3.22.X New radio/spl 1.76.X/6.35.
yeah when turning on the phone hold home and power, if you get the recovery menu then you got nothing to worry about, just flash the proper rom and all will be fine, there is even a stock htc rom with root around here.
right here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622038
but you dont have to go back to stock, you just need to put on a rom that fits your phone. i personally suggest this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654284
so good luck post back when you get it figured out
Thank you Reziukas and sike89 for the reply..
I will try the ROM recommended in the links. =)
I cannot get into recovery (-Home- & -Power-) now due to the perfected SPL (1.33.0006).
And whenever I use the goldcard method that flooded over the internet, I always get this "Main version is older!" failure message.
I think I have made the goldcard correctly cause it worked while I was trying to flash my 1.76.0007 SPL to 1.76.2007.
Any idea?
when you hold home and power what does it do?
did you root your phone with the recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img?
I did but after I flashed RADIO-2.22.19.26I with SPL 1.33.0006 I can't get into this recovery mode anymore.
When I press Home and Power, it starts booting but stucked on HTC Magic screen forever..
Easily said it, I can only enter hboot (vol down and power) and fastboot (back and power) now..
Procedure
1.Turn your phone off. Turn it on by holding Back and Power, or Vol. down and Power. Either way, boot into the bootloader.
You should see the three Androids on skateboards, and the menu title should say "Fastboot".
2.Connect your device to the computer. The display on your phone should now say "Fastboot USB".
3.Open up the shell/terminal on your computer, and type
fastboot devices [enter]Your device should be listed with it's serial number, and should say "fastboot".
4.Change directory to where you have saved your recovery image. I.e. type "cd /path/to/recovery.img in windows prompt, press enter.
5.You may issue a "dir" command (Windows) or "ls" (Unix/Linux) to make sure you are at the right directory, or just skip this step.
6.Type
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Check your phone's display, as recovery is being sent and flashed to your device.
Check your command prompt/shell to make sure the process is over.
i got all that from Binary100100 who got it from here http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/RE-recovery-img
give that a shot
also maybe this might help

I seem like I cannot use the fastboot command in 1.33.0006 SPL??
Whenever I type a fastboot command and press enter, I always get an error message.
>> ... FAILED (remote: not allow)
Do we have any windows application that can help to bypass all checking on the phone stats and proceeds with fastboot flash directly?
Perfected spl, you need to make yourself a goldcard
Goldcard doesn't seem to work..
Whenever I try to flash a new radio, it prompted me an error message "Main version is older!"..
What to do?
when it says main version is older it means you need the goldcard.
do you have a working goldcard? if not use this
http://revskills.de/downloads/psas.zip it will make the gold card.
No need for phone?
Hello there.
I was reading this thread and I'm having a similar problem.
I have a question, sike89.
Is it possible to create the goldcard just with the software you mentioned?
My magic 32a will only go into fastboot (stuck at splash screen) and so
I won't be able to use my phone to create the card.
Thanks!
As mentioned by YamatoDelgato, I cannot boot up my phone and thus far I am unable to re-create a goldcard.
But this "goldcard" I am using right now was a working goldcard and I am surprised that it doesn't work all the times..
By the way, I found an alternative on internet saying that you can use other HTC Magic phone to create a goldcard for your phone; Although I am not sure if its gonna work out, just give it a shot..
Sike89, am I right to say that this application does not require any HTC phone in order to create a goldcard?
I can just format my SD card using PC and input the necessary information into the application to create goldcard, is it true?
Problem Solved...with a Sacrifice.
Well I managed to get my phone booting again.
I have a rogers phone so I used their "mandatory"
update (2 sappimgs) to get my phone working again.
However, this resulted in getting the dreaded
SPL 1.76.0010 meaning I can't root it easily.
However, I know that with a working
phone that I now have, I could use it to obtain
a gold card.
Boy that was scary!
I'm so scared to try rooting again but I probably will hehe !
Thanks to xda community and google search!
I lost my original nandroid backup but did manage to install an original ROM on my 32B (Vodafone). Took some work but it worked Afterwards I wrote a tutorial about it (google How to restore your custom ROMed HTC Magic (Vodafone 32B) – a walk through, I can't post links yet).

Stock but hopefully not bricked

Hi there, I have a prbolem and need your help.
Here is the situation :
I have a HTC Rogers magic and wanted to root it, so I followed this procedure :
greatbigdog01.wordpress[add dot com here]/2010/07/12/new-shorter-rogers-magicmagic-rooting-guide/
Everything went well until the step 5.
I changed the Radio/SPL/Recovery using the utility, everything went well, wrote that it sucessfully updated, but after doing the reset the phone command, my phone was stock on the HTC Magic screen. Nothing.
I switched back to the newer SPL. Everything went well but again, stock on the magic screen. Don't know why. My PC does detec the phone.
I can go in Fastboot ect... (Home + power work, volume down + power work and I think back + work too) So from here I think I am not bricked.
Here is the info from the fastboot(?) :
hboot 1.76.2007 sapp50000
cpld-12
radio-6.35.10.18
If I am right, If I flash a rom that isn't compatible with my SPL/Radio I can brick my phone, so I rather wait what you guys suggest me to do. I don't care about loosing root as I need my phone back up asap.
Hope I gave you the needed informations
Thanks in adavance.
Post ALL fastboot info please.

I think thtat's all the info?
Have you flashed a new rom that was designed for the new radio? Try Smoki or RCmix.
What do you mean by new rom? Since I did exactly what is wrote in th tutorial and everything went well, I think I have the recovery-ra-hero-v1.6.2.img? Also tryed to flash back update-hboot-1.76.2007-signed.zip but it did not help.
Do you think I should put back the old SPL (1.33.2010?) with the radioswitcher and falsh a custum rom?
After you flash spl, radio and recovery you need to boot info recovery by holding down home and pressing power. Then you copy a rom for the new radio on your card and flash it from recovery.
Ok so you want me to try one of the 2 rom you posted?
Yup. Those if you want Android 2.1 with Sense or CursorSense if you want Android 1.5 with Sense
Thanks a lot , I wil give it a try. If I ever want Cyanogen, do you think it is possible that I switch back to old Radio/SPL, then without booting, flash the new rom? Do you think it would work?
As far as I know, there are 2 or 3 ports of CyanogenMod 6 for the Magic with 6.35 radio. If those don't work out for you, just use eyegor's radio switcher to install the old radio/spl/recovery and then flash the ROM from recovery.
2 boots, 1 rom 1 radio make sure for your device!
Good luck
Cheers!!
Thanks everyone! Put back the old spl and flashed cyanogen and it booted! Thanks again!

Magic stuck on "htc magic" boot screen after Engineering SPL... and bad Nandroid, ugh

Magic stuck on "htc magic" boot screen after Engineering SPL... and bad Nandroid, ugh
Please help, I'm stuck on a boot screen, compounded by an apparently bad Nandroid backup
I just got a Rogers Magic so I can get 3G on AT&T. (couldn't with my T-mo G1) Rooted it, installed the RA-Sapphire recovery and took two Nandroid backups (one with, one without Ext)
Here was my starting point:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT- 1.76.0010 (SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
RADIO- 6.35.10.18
Plan was to install Cyanogen 6.1.0 (like my G1). This requires that I downgrade the radio, and I was planning on using RadioSwitcher tool to make life simpler.
The tool requires an engineering SPL be installed, and points to this Magic SPL Hboot collection thread
I've downloaded and/or tried (in this order):
Stock: 1.76.0010 (as noted above)
Engineering SPL 1.33.2010 (from the SPL collection thread the tool instructions pointed to)
1.76.2007 SPL (from the Cyanogen Wiki on Magic 32A with 6.35 radio)
Engineering SPL 1.33.2009 (from the SPL collection thread the tool instructions are pointed to)
So when I tried using the tool to switch the radio to a Radio_HTC_PVT_32A_3.22.20.17 [supplied], I got these results:
Stock 1.76.0010 - tool won't update radio without an engineering SPL. Device boots up no problem.
Engineering 1.33.2010 - tool uses Fastboot, I see progress bar, then screen goes black and tool reports "Radio update: FAILURE". Device now won't boot, hangs on "htc magic" boot screen.
Tried to restore - Nandroid restore issue noted below.
Engineering 1.76.2007 - same progress bar/black screen, update "FAILURE", and device won't boot.
Engineering 1.33.2009 - same progress bar/black screen, update "FAILURE", and device won't boot.
(I tried posting on that Radioswitcher thread but it's locked or closed or I'm just not able to post on it.)
I don't feel comfortable randomly trying SPL's, especially as I'm guessing there's simply a lack of understanding on my part as to which SPL is compatible with my current phone/radio. I'm hoping someone here can help with that.
Currently, this is how the phone sits:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT- 1.33.2009 (SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
RADIO- 6.35.10.18
...not able to boot, not able to restore:
I can get into recovery, but it's also testing me:
When I try to flash anything from SD, I get "E: can't mount SDCARD:" If I select "USB-MS Toggle" then disable it and come back, then it appears to work - but doesn't give me warm and fuzzies.
Nandroid restore - either backup gives "Error: run 'nandroid-mobile.sh restore' via adb!"
That really makes me uncomfortable and puts me a bit out of my comfort zone - I was counting on the Nandroid backup as my safety net... never had any issues with my G1 and Clockworkmod recovery.
Thankfully, I have the trusty G1 I can plug my SIM card into to use as a phone...
But I really need to get this working or it's a lot of money, and hopes, down the drain.
Help - please!
I used this guide to root my phone to begin with - I see there's an engineering SPL option in there also.
Although I said I wasn't going to try pot-shot SPL attempts, this was part of the rooting process I followed originally, and someone suggested that I try that one.
I can't boot my phone so I couldn't follow that process exactly, but I extracted the SPL file from that zip file and put it on the SD card using my PC, then booted into recovery to flash that Eng SPL...
...and still the Magic won't boot up. I can't tell if this is even any different than the previous SPL - or rather if the problem preventing boot is a problem, if it's tied to the SPL (numerous SPL-swaps would seem to indicate no?) and if it's different.
Now I'm here:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT- 1.76.2007 (SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
RADIO- 6.35.10.18
Stop...you have an eng spl... Thats all what you need!
You are working the BLIND...
For every spl there are matching radios...
For the 1.76.2007 spl, you can use any 6.35 radio for magic.
For the 1.33.20xx(xx can be 04,05,10) you can use 3.22 radios.
All the above are eng spl, which basically gives extends read/write permissions.
With the eng you can flash what ever partition you want, e.g. system, radio or recovery.
The reason you can't boot is that you have **** up your system.... That we can fix easy :0)
Radio/spl **** ups -> not to so easy to fix.
You have a good combo now, let's get you a good system.
First, you need to flash a different recovery to make sure it works with the 6.35 radio.
Download my fastboot commander tool (magic version, check my signature) and it will do it for you the easy way.
When you have the tool, go to magic 32A tab.
There you can find two buttons, one for 6.35 radio combo a.k.a new radio.
You also find one for 3.22 radio a.k.a. old radio.
The tool will flash an entire combo of radio, spl and recovery that matches :0)
so... this what you have to do, choose 1 and only 1:
1) use the tool to flash "new" combo, reboot into recovery and flash any rom that is for the new radio (6.35). Check out the development sections for roms.
2) use the tool to flash "old" combo, reboot into recovery and flash any rom that is for the old radio (3.22). E.g. cyanogenmod from this page:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_version#MagicCM6
Remember to flash the EBI 1 kernel or else the system will not boot.
The gapps (at the buttom of the page) are optional but recommend :0)
Good luck, and stop working the BLIND!
Sounds good...
Should I expect that after flashing the "old" images, that I'd be able to boot my phone into the stock OS again (1.5 with Sense)?
Or should I just skip that [if that's not a good test] and just proceed with loading the Cyanogen ROM?
Very much appreciated, and thanks again.
Also, one thing I'm concerned with - I've seen some notes along the way that the Magic requires a custom Kernel to install Cyanogen... I'm not sure what the Kernel really even is. Do you have any insight into that?
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=How_to_build_a_kernel_port_for_CM6
I've got the 32A - but those instructions are hardly 'download this file and flash':
"If you want to build a EBI1 kernel port package to get it to run on a 32A Magic (with 288 MB total RAM), or a phone with the 3.xxx radio such as the Rogers 32A Magic and Rogers Dream, then you can follow the instructions below:"
...and those instructions are long, and most intimidatingly - vague (much is implied, not all explicitly stated).
Yikes...
..........
I flashed the "old", and the phone now gets stuck in a boot loop on the "Rogers" (before the "HTC Magic" where it was getting stuck before).
The recovery is still the RA-sapphire-v1.7.OH... is that the Amon Ra?
I'll take a backup in this state, test-restore it (I know from experience with my G1 that the "HTC Magic" splash screen will be replaced with a Cyanogenmod one, with the Cyano 6.1.0) then put the Cyanogen on there and cross my fingers that I don't need to mess with that Kernel procedure...
EDIT:
I have a backup that restores - unfortunately it puts me back to the original "can't boot" state, lol.
Anyway, so after I took that backup, I proceeded to flash Cyano and the tiny Gapps.
I'm still getting hung on the Rogers screen - the Cyanogenmod boot screen doesn't come up.
WTF, you know?
EDIT 2:
I forgot to list my current state:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2010 (SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-3.22.20.17
Let me know if you can help, thanks
i think now you can boot into recovery and wipe everything and then try to flash the rom from sd card/
READ what is written...
You are still messing **** up...
You cannot boot ANYTHING until you get a working system on the device...
You keep "booting" to nothing because there is NOTHING to boot...
STOP for a second and READ.
I have giving you 2 options... do one of them...
The Cyanogenmod need EBI 1 kernel which you can find on the same page i gave you..
if you read the instructions, you also find i have written that...
Once again to be sure, flash EBI 1 kernel after the CM rom, then you flash gapps and you should be good to go...
Or flash "new" combo and download this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778083
I can't help any more if you don't READ before you act!
I did... wanted to take it one conservative step at a time... operating with a bad backup here... ;-) And that Kernel page on the Cyanogen wiki is just evil... it should have a source to download one and apply, for us mere mortals lol.
I downloaded an already built, already compiled EBI1 kernel, and that did work nicely. Phew.
Thanks for the tool and the help - I couldn't have done it without your help.

Does your phone boot into the ROM?
I should probably explain a bit:
So my phone is caught at the "HTC Magic" screen at the startup. It won't go on any farther than that. When I hold down the VOLUME DOWN key and press the END key, I can bring up the screen that states the following:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT- 1.76.0010 (SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
RADIO- 6.35.10.18
The screen does give me some menu options:
HBOOT
<BACK> FastBoot Mode
<SEND> Simlock
When I press BACK, I get another set of menu options:
FASTBOOT
<VOL DOWN> HBoot Mode
<SEND> Reset Device
<ACTION> Restart to HBoot
<MENU> Power Down
..did that answer your question? ..i'm not sure.. LOL!
Yeah, so it's not booting into the ROM. Did you have root before? Did you have a custom recovery installed? Can you get into it by pressing home+power?
I bought the phone off of ebay so I don't know what was programmed on the phone before I got it.. :/

Your going to have to root using the goldcard method. A Google search of "root 32A magic goldcard" should get you were you need to be.
Okay, so I'm sorry to be such a noob, but I got everything ready for a Goldcard (cable and a new kingston SD), but then what I need is to set up the ADB which requires me to connect the phone to a computer.. I cannot access anything on the phone via the computer except for the memory.. the drivers won't install.
I'm using this website's instructions:
/theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/[/url]
So, the second step is to create an ADB, and then the third requires me to access the phone itself and unmount the SD.. I'm kind of at a loss at this point..
what should I do?
You'll have to see if a friend has a phone that you can borrow to make the goldcard. The steps will be the same and it'll work on any phone running Android.
