576RAM on HD2 with android, how? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hello all.
im using 2.2 Froyo on my HD2, to say its great!
but, i have noticed that through the Android Task Manager app, it only shows 411.72 RAM enabled, instead od 576, or 448 the default.
what is wrong?
im using also HSPL3
is there any problem i should do something with?
thank you!

Help somebody?

Nothing's wrong - that's perfectly normal. It's one of the side-effects of using a ported OS, rather than one made specifically for our device. It may get fixed, but it really isn't an issue so I wouldn't hold my breath,

i saw on the nexus one and desire (512mb RAM) task managers sees 412mb RAM, so it seems that at MAX we are under of 64mb RAM, but for 412mb we are in line with device like Nexus and Desire
(on Galaxy s, 512mb and they see at MAX 338mb...on new Galaxy they see 448mb starting from 650!)

I think it starts at 576 then loads and locks the essentials to run the OS in the memory and calculates the remaining after that, if that makes sense.

Its normal. This same app on HTC Desire shows you the same result - 411MB. The rest of the ram is used by system/gpu/etc.
Android have full ram of HD2, not only 448MB !

Would the N1 have hidden ram?

With the Desire coming out with 576mb of ram compared to the N1 512mb, would the N1 just have hidden 576mb. Seeing as the HD2 came with 448mb, but with a radio update it was able to uncover 512mb.
Just a thought.

On the MWC i have seen that the Desire has only 80-65 MB free. On my Nexus i have 120 (will on the stocked rom )
The Nexus runs faster than the Desire. And i think google will support (with new updates) the Nexus longer than htc it will do.

And I got around 300MB free when killin some more tasks (on CM 5.0.3)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=635838
Even the stock N1 only provides 211 MBytes of RAM (from kernel dmesg), Do you think you can more than that? I mean how much RAM being allocated by kernel in stock Desire ?
TQ

is it really advatage with hacked RAM size?

hi all,
it seems no change in speed by using 576MB hacked instead of original 488Mb (for my personal experience after using 2 cooked roms).
Can anyone help to give me more info for this such as advantage/disadvantage for these size and will it harm system or not?
Actually, it just happy me with bigger free size of ~300mb
thanks
This issue could also have other reasons.
Imagine you have a car
On the speedometer max speed is 200 km / h
Now you build a speedometer with a top speed 300 km / h
each now looks in the car assumes
that you have a tuned car which goes really fast
WM apps usually consume something between 0.2 (Outlook) to 10MB of memory (TomTom), so having 200MB free is more than enough for some serious multitasking. So, it is definitely not needed, but does not make any harm either.
I donĀ“t agree, I had a Diamond with 192 mb ram and a touch HD with 288 mb ram, and both just powered, the HD was a lot faster, just because of the 100 mb extra ram (both had more than 50% ram free)
extra ram wont make the machine faster per say... it just increases the ability to handle more
If there was no advantage, then HTC would have probably not reales a HD2 with twice the amount of memory as the first release.

I totally agree, especially since they haven't done that.

as johnc says... they havent done that.
What they did do is release the T-Mobile Us version with twice as much ROM.
nothing to do with RAM. get your facts straight.
The T-Mobile US version however does have an extra 128MB RAM. But like i said above... there is no increase in overall performance. Extra RAM simply means it is able to handle more multitasking.

i think this is the best answer. Yes, it just bring us the feeling.
some of you misunderstand my question. Of course, bigger ram size is surely faster but in this case, it is just a tweak from original 488Mb (hardware) up to 567Mb (fake ram )

It requires a tweak to 'unlock' the extra RAM as it has been 'hidden' by the ROM software.

it willnot show the 576 with out flashing new roms and new radios as the old os doesnot support this amound of ram

a tweak or change the rom
From the technical point of view. When an application is started the operating system loads the application from the ROM into the RAM memory, this process is slow because ROM memory is slower to read than RAM memory. So in order to take full advantage of the CPU 1GHZ processor, the operating system needs enough RAM memory to load the full application. RAM memory sits right on top of the CPU and communication between the CPU and RAM is very fast. If there isn't enough RAM memory the operating system will load part of the application into RAM and the rest will remain on the ROM. This will make the operating system to constantly read ROM memory which slows down your application. In some cases when an application is stopped the operating system might not release corresponding RAM memory, this is called a LEAKING POINTER. In this case you will need to reboot your system to release the memory. Having too many LEAKING POINTER will make your phone run slower because operating system constantly has to go to the ROM memory instead of using the full potential of the RAM

lol...
Nearly as funny as RAMAROM!
With over 448MB of RAM, I really doubt that any WM app is going to cause problems with memory leaks to the extent that an app cannot run properly. Bear in mind that WM apps are tiny, compared to Windows (PC) applications, so the same rules don't really apply. Yes, they do, okay, but these things simply don't happen.
You really shouldn't notice any difference between 448MB of RAM and 576MB of RAM. If you do, it's in your head, probably because you want to believe it. Perception is not always fact.

I agree with you but if you are a browsering the internet and listening to music and have couple of other clients/apps running you might see a jump in the memory usage.

Yes, of course, but still not to the extent that we're talking about. I've never seen the memory usage on my HD2 over about 60%, and I use it very heavily.
Like I said, the (PC) Windows rules don't really apply to WM.

I guess so, my professional exprience is working with windows server and unix mainframe systems. Which could be different from a phone architecture.
If anyone manages to max out the standard 448MB of RAM then i would like to know how the hell they managed it with winmo!

MMTaskManager 1.2.1...only showing 447mb RAM total...?

I have the energy rom installed and when I open MMTaskManager 1.2.100320 It says the available memory and the total memory (the total says 447m ...only) What is wrong here ?
I noticed the same thing.. thought we had like 512mb of ram..? with 1gb of rom

Actually, the US version has 576MB of RAM.
So, is the rest of the ram being reserved/blocked ? or is it just not being reported ? in other words is it all available? What tool can we use to check besides this app ?
I believe the rest are dedicated RAM for GPU.
source/proof ?
agree
I can confirm with the system mem manager. Wondering if they did like they did with the HD2 Euro, which only had about that amount to start off.

go look at hardware info instead of system.
settings tab -about phone - hardware info. should show 576 there.

That may show what is built in, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the phone isn't using all of that.
htc said that 128 of ram reserved for gpu acceleration , so no more argument on this please every htc phone has a part of its ram for gpu ,look at the history of htc devices and use search function, don't brlieve me ask them by your self

correct, you are wrong.
when I got mine (non us) it showed 448 in hardware and 320 system. so 128 reserved for graphics.
I applied the memory unlock tweak and now it shows 576 hardware and 448 system' so 128 still reserved for graphics.
yours will also show 576 hardware and 448 system, because 128 reserved for....... you guessed it........ graphics.

Only 256M RAM?

I read on another forum that the advertised RAM is 512M RAM but the Kernel on the SGS can only see 256M RAM.
Can current owners confirm this is indeed the case?
This might be slowing the phone if this is indeed the case.
Crap. Since it is running Android 2.1, there shouldnt be any problems whatsoever. Why dont you download Advanced task Killer and check out the amount of free ram yourself?

I don't own the device but am considering it.
I was wondering if one of current owners could check this and let us know.
Until 2.2 (froyo) isn't the most ram Android can read 256mb?
Nope.
The EVO reads 512M and is on 2.1
i believe the Desire too.
The N1 got a modied Kernel on 2.1 that was able to see 512M.
Ahh my bad sorry
I believe i read in another forum that it's using an outdated kernal. Someone can make a custom rom and fix it eventually.
First of all it does have 512 MB of ram. The problem is that the current kernel can only use 0x50000 KB of it. After reading a bit of the dpram module it seems that samsung report to the kernel that 0x50000 KB is the memory size of the device. I think they did it due to the aforementioned bug.

Do we know if 2.2 will fix this ?
2.2 should but i hope some talented dev can unlock the additional memory before that
I'm using Android System app to check and its showing me...
Ram: Max: 325Mo Free: 132Mo 40% (i have seen higher FREE Mo).
and when i run like almost all the apps i can think of, right now i have like 20 apps running I checked on (Advanced Task Killer) to see what is running, than I went back to Android System and now its showing me
Ram: Max: 325Mo Free: 35Mo.
I can notice lag but it still runs faster than my last N95 8gb. (With nothing running).
Hope this helps.

[Q] 576Mb Ram on Android ROM?

I've tried to start android rom, with 576Mb ram Windows Mobile rom like (last Leo rom), but Android view only 448Mb.
Is it possible ram hack android rom? for use all 576Mb ram??
Sorry for my poor english
Ps: thanks to all, I bought an htc hd2 phone, only for install Android!!!
Android splits the RAM of the device between the kernel/system (?) and the dalvik VM... or something, either way all of should be used. I thought the Leo only had 448mb anyway? It does according to hTC.
448 is for the system 128 for the video card.
448+128=576
Hi AdrianK,
but htc Leo has really 576Mb ram, non virtually (like htc g1 ram hack, that move ram from graphic to system).
Htc Leo has physically 576Mb dedicate.

No in windows mobile you get the same. You will also see about 448.
I think there is a way since older kernels where 256 mb and 32mb video memory.
But it is not useful since the preformence in android will slow down very much slower animations etc. But believe me we got more then enough ram.

The leo has 576 mb of ram dedicated and a X amount of video ram. There are roms around that make it posible to use the full amount of ram (like the US T-mobile versions)
I am not sure how android uses the ram u wil need to speak to a Android dev about that.
if you look in the general section there are a couple of threads on this issue
