Could they not have chosen a different material for the backing? - Xoom General

I know Motorola wanted to go for grip, and I assume they didn't want to go for plastic.. because apparently plastic=cheap, which isn't always entirely the truth.
In all honestly I cannot properly tell what the back of the Xoom is made out of.. it looks like rubber or something.. however, getting back to point. Judging from screen shots the back on the Xoom looks very irritating:

Before you go on to say "Of course it looks like that! A whole bunch of people were playing with the device!", regardless, it looks very prone to grease, fingerprints, etc etc. I don't understand why they couldn't have gone with a colored aluminum body (which is what it somewhat resembles already) with a teflon coating exactly like the Nexus One, which is almost entirely resistant to fingerprints (or is it because the Xoom is black they are so visible?).. it looks like one of those laptops where you have to clean off the top all the time because it becomes infested with hundreds of fingerprints and other grime that quickly become a nuisance.
Does anyone know what the Xoom's body is composed of?

Its the same rubber Googles CR-48 notebooks are made of. Just buy a skin for it.

Thanks for the blatant answer. Guess I will have to~

i think they use that material for more stable surface. yes it cause more fingerprints but it will stay safer on tables or other surfaces and avoid scratches with different look than other devices.
plus, i dont think it'll get dirty that much and that soon with personal use...

I hate rubber coated plastic... Over the time the rubber will get sticky and peel off...

I know I for one will be getting a screen protector and gel case for this or whatever tablet I end up going with. I imagine MANY others will be doing the same and fingerprints on the back case will be a moot issue.

The mz605 model sold in Brazil have the 3/4 bottom part made of unpainted aluminium, and the top 1/4 of rubber plastic. Terrible grip on the aluminium part, i hate it.

Its not rubber coated plastic. I don't know exactly what it is but mine feels like bare aluminum. Cold to the touch, no rubbery feeling at all. And very resistant to scratching. I have the folio case but take it out any chance I get (feels much better nekid), there is not a single scratch on mine anywhere.

mz604 in Australia is the same. Looks sleek IMO, but yes a tad slippery.

anyone paint their EVOs?

anyone in here paint their EVOs? first I did the paint scrape mod, ending up with black-red-black, then i bought the back plate and battery cover in stock white so I ended up with a bunch of color combinations...now I painted my original (the one I scraped) plate and battery cover baby blue and gave it a few coats of clear.
I think it looks nice.

That looks pretty damn sexy...I really want to do this mod but with my luck ill break my evo and SOL since It voids your warranty.

I've painted mine as well. I originally had the white evo, but after having it fall out of my pocket on the pavement, it had a few dings where the red plastic was showing through. So I decided to sand it down and paint it. Except that I was sorta lazy and just used what I already had, and just a few weeks prior to this, I had been repainting the bumper on my black car.
So I disassembled it, sanded it down to get rid of the dings (the plastic is disturbingly soft), and then just did the 1-2-3 punch of plastic adhesion promoter, base coat, and clearcoat. 2-3 coats of each, naturally.
I think it turned out pretty ok, though I left my battery cover as-is.
I took some photos to document the process here. Unfortunately I had to use flash on these shots, and it ends up looking sorta worse than it does in real life.

looks great. you did a better job in terms of procedure. I think this is my best job so far but it's far from perfect...I'm still learning!

Thanks, I do plan on repainting it something other than black at some point, but for now this is preferable to having visible dings on the body.
I like the color you chose for yours and it looks really nice. I'm impressed with the fact that you were able to keep the HTC lettering metallic while painting the rest of it; regardless of whether you masked them off or just removed them and then re-attached them, it had to have been kind of a pain.
That said, I think I prefer the stock white back on that; it color-coordinates really well with the back of the case.
Also I noticed that you painted the inside of your kickstand white. subtle, but a nice touch.
I did this a while back for my gf...
The problem with this is once you put a case over it its pointless. Better off just painting a case. Does anyone really use an Evo with no case?

I don't use a case.
wow...props, that looks bad azz! but yea...i'm clumsy so i dont think i could pull that off without breaking it some how

I feel the same about phone cases as I do bras for cars. Maybe they protect your phone, but they look stupid. I'd much rather have a scratched up phone than a stupid looking case on it. BTW, I bought my Evo on launch day, never used a case or screen protector, and you have to look very hard to find any imperfections.
*sorry to get off topic - OP, I'm digging that shade of blue... very nice job.

I need a something that doesn't make it slip from the table anymore

there are 100s of sleeves, bumpers and cases. I lost track. All I need is something, slim, nothing fancy that doen't make that bloody phone to slip from every damn surface. Any advice besides a rubber band?

Meifeng Hard Skin. Looks and feels great, fits perfectly, precisely cut, doesn't add bulk and is cheap. Look up for it on eBay, you won't be disappointed. I recommend a black one.
Any screenprotector should help and it does not get any slimer then that^^
Poetic Bumper or a full body skin (I recommend Best Skins Ever)
thanks, I just ordered the Meifeng.
Dbrand carbon fiber skin. works well and looks awesome.

I second the Meifeng. I have one in black. The cutouts are more precise and it adds more grip than the Diztronic hard case.

AW: I need a something that doesn't make it slip from the table anymore
I use a Xtreme guard screen protector on the back. I hate those protectors on the front, but the phone is no more slippy now with the one on the backside.

ZAGG's back protector works wonders. Because it is so damn grippy!
im using Skinomi with no case, just front n back and it grips the table fine.
I second that ^^ the skinomi adds the grip needed if you like the naked look of the N4. Works great for me.

I wish somebody would make a TPU case where at least the front face AND back face are glossy to make it non-slip! I've got one for my old iphone4 (which i'm using now while waiting for my replacement Nexus4 since the USB port decided to just up and drop dead), and on most surfaces it is rock solid and will not budge unless you put some real force on it. I don't understand the extreme fascination of a matte back case when it is just as slippery as without the case!
I also have the meifeng hard case (with the rock quicksand like texture) and although it does give it a little bit of grip, it is also far from eliminating slippiness...
Superglue. Never fails.
I also recommend the Meifeng (the black one is my daily case). However, if slip issues are the *only* reason you want a case, why cover the whole phone? Why not try something like these?

Moto X Wood backs

Soooooo, do we think these are still coming? i'm kinda holding out for this.
Rosewood for days and days.....
http://dbrand.com/purchase/moto-x/
it's vinyl
Dunno... there are a LOT of technical issues they will have to work out with wood. you have varying temps coming from the phone hardware causing expansion and contraction as it cools or heals up the wood. you also have moisture from the hands and its not a soft water either, sweaty secretions tend to be salty which wood reacts to in fairly unpleasant ways. Even wood boat finishes have to be renewed and maintained fairly regularly which is not something most people are willing to do on their phones. And thats not even bringing in the natural expansion/contraction wood goes through as you progress from moist summers to dry winters (remember that old hutch or drawer that closed perfectly in the winter but always stuck in the summer?).
So yea while I love making furniture and various decorations out of wood I don't really see it being a practical back material. But hey people use glass on phone backs and thats not all too practical so maybe they will try wood.
if they get it together, im sure it would be a treated wood. but i could see the seals having issues if the wood expands.....
Hmmmmm

What they will probably do (or at least I would) is completely seal the wood in some kind of plastic/epoxy finish. It would end up "feeling" like plastic but it would be real wood and effectively sealed off from moisture, although heat would still be an issue. The other issue is the back material is SOOOO thin its going to need some kind of very strong backing to give it a bit of structural integrity or else it will crack on the first bump.
i'm guessing the wood backs are going to be a very thin veneer that covers a standard plastic back. in fact, looking at the pictures again, they look like some sort of insert and they could possibly have a different feel than the standard plastic back, like maybe they've lost the curve.

droid-life reported their impression and said that (although it was prototype) it wasnt covered by a veneer and really felt like wood. who knows if that will be the final product though.

A veneer is still real wood, it's just a very thin piece they can adhere to the cover. Almost everything hardwood you see is veneered. Otherwise it would be ridiculously expensive.
I'm down.

How does your leather cover looks like?

I really like the leather. But every sign of wear or damage..., those things happen... . I don't like.
Especially after dropping on the floor three times.

Had mine since launch in the UK, my black leather back is still in good shape. Some *very* small signs of wear on the corners, but nothing you'd notice unless you were looking really closely.
I haven't dropped mine (yet) though!

Dropping the phone isn't a "sign of wear"...you can't blame it for getting dinged up on your own account. Same thing would happen to plastic backs.

Yes that is.... It's also wear... Daily use. And dropping on the floor is a part of it.
I don't blame anybody or the quality.
Guess you miss the purpose of the post.
Just curious how other people's covers look like...

I understand the post completely, I'm just saying dropping your phone isn't a sign of wear. Taking it in/out of your pocket and handling it constantly would be a sign of wear.
Mine actually looks pretty good, minus small discoloration on the corners. I'm actually pretty surprised by how well its held up. I suspect it depends on the leather used and how well it was constructed.
Mine is showing a decent amount of wear along the border/on the edges. I actually like it. I have the brown leather and the brown had too much of an orange-ish tint for my taste. I like that with the wear it's darkened up a bit.
Sent from my LG-H811 using XDA Free mobile app
I clean it with leather conditioner, so it's softened up a bit. Looks slightly darker than when I bought it, and the corners are darkening/peeling but I didn't get a clear picture, I like the wear though so it doesn't bother me much.
Before I took my black leather off and replaced it with the plastic and slapped a case on.
The leather was holding up perfectly fine. The corners seemed fine as well. The black is a bit different from the rest of them it seems though.

White border under glass. (S7 Edge Black Pearl)

Has anyone (especially those who own Black Pearl colour) exprenced this (first picture).
At first I thought it's just some dust but when I washed my phone and looked closely, it's actually something under the glass which looks like a cheap temepered glass's border (second picture).
The difference is only some parts of them are in white, the rest are beautiful in black (or transparent?).
It doesn't affect waterproof or anything but still triggers me a lot. Is this normal ?

This looks totally normal, it looks like dust build up in the slight gap between the tempered glass and screen itself or the space between the screen and body in some chase.. this is usually noticeable on black phones.
So U are saying that upon close inspection it looks like it's under the glass?
If so, I can confirm that it may be possible, because I'm having that issue. I have a silver titanium model, and on the upper side, it seems that the silver paint doesn't go all the way to the edge on the front glass, so I am able to see the glue that holds the glass.

I'm pretty sure it's not the dust because I even sink the phone in water.

it is just dust and dirt build up, I don't find it alarming, you can still show it to a repairer to be sure..
